“I dream. Sometimes I think that’s the only right thing to do.” ~ Haruki Murakami, Sputnik Sweetheart

Today is the birthday of one my favorite writers, Haruki Murakami. Why his work registers with me is something I can’t articulate easily. He’s Japanese, from Tokyo, a city I have never seen, and he is male and a runner—all quite unlike me. Yet his work makes sense to me, and I eagerly await publication of anything he writes. His book, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, induced me to start blogging.

When this beautiful dress from Mami Jewell dropped in my lap, therefore, it made sense to style a look based on an idea of his work—simple but dreamlike, graceful and elegant, ”easily accessible, yet profoundly complex,” as his writing has been described. I love the bright sparkling colors of this dress, the blossoms along the hem (for Miss Japan in MVW) and the flowing scarves at the sleeves. It could be too much but as always, Mami imbues it with simplicity and sense, everything working together to make a beautiful silhouette.

I spent an inordinate amount of time tinkering with this cherry blossom branch by Aida Ewing that’s available at the Collabor88. I suspect that’s how Murakami’s writing it—very polished while seemingly spontaneous. He is influenced by Raymond Carver, for whom a word was never wasted. The blush of my skin is a testament to Sachi Vixen’s new line of skins and their delicate beauty. I finally found this long hair from Tabata Jewell suited because, for once, it was not in front. Sometimes I want a long straight style that is mesh but worn with the hair in back so I can show off my beautiful clothing.

Your heart is like a great river after a long spell of rain, spilling over its banks. All signposts that once stood on the ground are gone, inundated and carried away by that rush of water. And still the rain beats down on the surface of the river. Every time you see a flood like that on the news you tell yourself: That’s it. That’s my heart. ~ Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore
