A Midsummer Night’s Dream

5 07 2011

Midsummer Night's Dream

The iron tongue of midnight hath told twelve.
Lovers, to bed; ’tis almost fairy time.
~William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Midsummer Night's Dream

A beautiful dress, glowing makeup, sexy up-do.. how many of us log into SL in the evening to dance a little and dream? You can dance beautifully and dream in one of Agnes Finney’s newest releases. With its beautifully done lace bodice and lace-trimmed skirt, this dramatic dress will take you dancing and possibly out for a romantic evening. By changing the silhouette of the typical evening dress—pushing the skirt to an empire waist—the dress sets you out from the crowd.

Midsummer Night's Dream

My skin is a new one from Alexandra Barcelos, who offers soft skins with sexy touches. My hair is one of Mirja Mills’ beautiful offerings for Hair Fair. (She has done all romantic this year—you really need to see her booth.) This hair comes with flowers AND without, so you are not stuck with them if you don’t want. However, with this ensemble, I think they are only fitting.

Doth cause the ocean to attend upon her….

Leather Cinderella

4 06 2011

Leather Princess

Once upon a time in a homestead sim far far away (probably Zindra), in a stately sculpty chateau lived a widowed gentleman and his lovely daughter, Cinderella. While he loved his daughter, he was concerned for her well-being—he thought she needed a mother to teach her how to tweak her shape and position her eyelashes. So he partnered a woman, HotMama51 Paine,  who had two daughters—Squeakieee278 Resident and 2Fly4U Afterthought and gave her an allowance for all the girls’ needs. Then he was called away to Open Sim so he left Cinderella with his new partner.

While the mother and her daughters ran around the grid looking for shoes to match their eyes, Cinderella had to resort to camping and hanging out at lucky chairs. (C does not come up often, she found.) Cinderella found herself having to pick up all the packages the sisters and mother opened and left lying around the sim, even in her small 117-prim corner. Through it all she remained ever gentle and kind, for with each dawn (4 times in 24 hours), she found new hope that some day her dream of a happy second life would come true.

Leather Princess

One day she rezzed in to see a huge invitation with particles flying out of it in the middle of the sim. “Come to the ball—meet Prince Philip. Wear your best bling for a night of dancing and romance.” She clicked the invite and it spewed a notecard with a landmark attached. “The Big Ball, Magical Forest (128, 100, 1001)” it said. The particles were causing sim lag, so Cinderella deleted it.

“Leave that there!” sneered her stepsister, Squeakieee278. “I like how it looks.”

Her other sister, 2Fly4U snorted. “She thinks she can go too. Well, she can’t–she still has newbie eyes!”

For days the sisters flew back and forth from stores and dropped boxes from Marketplace all over the sim, trying on outfit after outfit, dressing up their avatars enough so that Prince Philip would spot them through the haze of gray and lag at the Ball. Hair, shoes, dresses, eyes, skins—all were tried on to the point the asset servers were slowed down for the rest of the grid. Cinderella continued to clean up after them, deleting prim after prim to keep the sim clean.

Leather Princess

The evening of the ball, Cinderella settled in to sort the Midnight Mania items in her inventory while the sisters adjusted and primped. When every last prim was in place, the sisters tp’d out (or tried to—their scripted shoes and hair made it hard for them to get anywhere). The sisters finally relogged at the ball sim while Cinderella was left behind alone to delete the remainder of their packages.

Suddenly in a poof a tiny rezzed into the sim. Her name, “FairyGodmother” included the display name “The Real Deal.” A bunny, she was holding a great big wand with particles flying out of it. She waddled up to Cinderella and said, “You’re going to that ball. Sending items.. ready?”

Cinderella nodded, confused but opened her inventory. A folder dropped in and Cinderella donned it. A beautiful dress with an ethereal pink-tinged ballgown rezzed on her body. FairyGodmother fluttered up to cinch the laces on the back of the leather corset a little tighter and fluff the material at the bodice. “Mami Jewell,” the bunny smiled. “Only the best for you dear. And my, leather suits you.”

A wave of the magic wand and poof, a skin appeared in Cinderella’s Body Parts. Cinderella dragged it on and gasped and her new face and body. Her eyeshadow glistened, her lips puckered in a full juicy smile. The bunny grinned (as bunnies do) and said, “esra Noyes—quite exotic, quite sexy.”

The bunny tossed another object at her and Cinderella threw it on. Wild, windblown hair from Mirja Mills. Cinderella felt suddenly glamorous. Another object appeared and upon putting it on, Cinderella discovered it was an exquisitely ornate choker from Abraxxa Anatine.

The bunny squinted. “For goodness sake, you have NEWBIE eyes. Who let you walk around like that?” A pair of eyes popped into inventory and Cinderella double clicked. She went from glassy-eyed stare to soulful and sexy in the time they took to rez thanks to Ikon Innovia.

The bunny dusted off her paws. “My work is done here. You do realize it’s not about getting Prince Charming–it’s about looking good. You know how to teleport–the rest is up to you.” Cinderella restored the landmark from trash, took a deep breath and double clicked. Finding the rest of her fantasy was up to her….

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Learned

16 05 2011

It’s not enough to set the turn
With nothing ventured nothing learned
It’s how it’s always been

~ “The Next Time Around” by Little Joy

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Learned

Try something new and you might learn something. I found these cute skirt/pants out on my wanderings. Made by yoriminaty Beresford (a distant cousin, clearly), this unusual piece with its handpainted motif and muddy color is hippy chic. Kaneyan Nicholls supplies the light and pretty top with the laced collar.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Learned

My skin is a fresh offering from Kaethe Dyrssen, who is dipping into skin creation after being established as a shape maker. I juiced up the lips with a new lip gloss from Mocksoup Graves. Mocksoup’s glosses and eyeshadows dominate my makeup kit because they fit so many skins and are translucent, so the original skin’s lip shape can still show through. For all we gripe about LL, surely the tattoo layers are a great feature. Finally my wispy and romantic hair is a new offering from Mirja Mills. This blonde is really fantastic.

Golden Treasure

13 05 2011

I love putting together a totally fantastical look, one that is monochrome and stylized. There is no deep meaning behind this—just a satisfaction in finding a set of items that represent one of the hardest textures in SL to show–gold—in amazing ways.

Golden Treasure

I start with a swimsuit from monica Outlander’s early summer set of swimsuits and beachwear. The “Prue” is a great set—a bikini top with a thong and a nice little pareo to hide your bum. Monica has the sheen of the material and that bright golden color locked down perfectly. My shoes are great little prim toe shoes from Babette Ultsch that have a great gold texture (she also has a great silver pair).

Golden Treasure

My skin is the newest from Aida Ewing, a sunkissed beauty with a beautiful glow and sheen to the skin and lips and delectable make up. I really like this new set, which is being offered at the Skin and Shape Expo, because it shows a lot more depth and skill. Aida’s improving with each skin she makes and is starting to dominate the skin world. My golden brown hair is a Mirja Mills special color, which I love seeing because it’s so unique in SL. My earrings are grandiose affairs from Cora Lu’s newest line for Paper Couture and my luscious golden eyes are from Ikon Innovia.

Golden Treasure

Not all that blings is gold.

Poetry

29 04 2011

April is National Poetry Month in the US. Apropos of nothing, I wanted to share a poem from one of my favorite American poets, Billy Collins:

Sonnet

All we need is fourteen lines, well, thirteen now,
and after this one just a dozen
to launch a little ship on love’s storm-tossed seas,
then only ten more left like rows of beans.
How easily it goes unless you get Elizabethan
and insist the iambic bongos must be played
and rhymes positioned at the ends of lines,
one for every station of the cross.
But hang on here wile we make the turn
into the final six where all will be resolved,
where longing and heartache will find an end,
where Laura will tell Petrarch to put down his pen,
take off those crazy medieval tights,
blow out the lights, and come at last to bed.

~ from Sailing Around the Room: New and Selected Poems by Billy Collins

Poetry

I considered putting on crazy medieval tights but forewent that option to show this look that has nothing to do with the poem, a cute little pinky purple ensemble. My top is an inexpensive find from Miffyhoi Rosca, who offered this as part of an outfit at the TFG Discount Shop. I really dig the asymmetrical shape.

Poetry

The theme of this visual poem, however, is the shape and skin. I am wearing a shape from Freedom Parx, part of a new series she is selling that looks to break the old clichés of SL. She doesn’t aim for “beautiful” as much as interesting, though I find this shape pretty cute. I will remark that I did tweak the mouth corners a bit—Freedom shows the shape with a frowny face, which is something I really dislike. It’s great because the shapes are offered mod—that’s the only mod I wanted to make to this shape.

Lion Jonesford has recently come out with a new line of skins and they overlay this shape perfectly, especially in light of their Asian flavor. She offers them in a series of more pastel make-up tones for the most part, which I find lovely. The pinks and purples offset the pale complexion (which is a great color) perfectly. She also has a series of more radical make-ups (would you expect any less from Lion?).

They called her Aluminum because, even though she was fluid like quicksilver, she was light and plastic, silver and shining and electric.

LeeZu Baxter’s newest is another in her line of more interesting experiments in sensual and sexual design. This piece reveals the middle body pretty substantially (and this is kind of almost a family blog) so I wear a lacy bodysuit piece from Jojorunoo Runo.

Dark Sister

6 04 2011

I don’t have a blood sister but I have several soul sisters—Eshi, Raven, and now Syngen. And deep in my heart I have a dark sister.

Dark Sister

Her ways are quiet but strong. This dress from Vixn Dagger is a perfect choice for her. With its rich brocade and laced decolletage, my dark sister is both contained and sexy. With its romantic and slightly Victorian air, this dress is ideal for a gothic look or a vampire. Vixn has really improved her work as her business has grown—she once just did eyes, which I find hard to imagine anymore because she has such a wide variety of darker and sexy looks for men and women both. (She’s also a mensch, but that is beside the point.)

Dark Sister

My skin is from Sachi Vixen, who generously made this set exclusively for the Fantasy Faire, which benefits the American Cancer Society 100%. I layered on the Dark Fae makeup to make our dark sister even darker. I love the blue eyeshadow and made it pop with Ikon Innovia’s blue eyes. (If you go to Fantasy Faire, remember all the good stuff about keeping lag down—draw distance down, etc. They have a lot going on there.)

I show with a shape from Sophia Rossen, who has been fashioning great shapes for avatars around the grid. This shape was not meant to be worn with this skin but it fills it out perfectly (which is what makes a good shape). She is not too frowny nor too thin and not too squinty or alien shaped. In fact, I think she has a rather fine buxom figure.

Seeing Stars

2 04 2011

Sexy club wear is just not my thing in SL but for many folks in SL, it is the only way to dress—short skirts, thigh highs, teeny tiny tops.

Seeing Stars

Mascha Boa has recently returned to SL and she has brought her unique vision of clubwear back to her many adoring customers. A mix of teeny tiny, leather, and domme with elements of fantasy, such as the star sparkled texture of this outfit. Mascha is generously offering this outfit and several others in donation vendors at her store to benefit the American Cancer Society. She committed to raising 50,000L for Fashion for Life—help her out.

Seeing Stars

I wear a skin from Minnu Palen with this outfit with a bold red lipstick. My intense glittering eyes are from Ikon Innovia, and my great red fantasy hair is a new one from Mirja Mills, who is cranking out amazing new hair week after week.

House of RFyre at Fashion for Life

22 03 2011

Dear Readers:

As most of you may or may not know, I have worked for Raven Pennyfeather for over three years in SL. She is a personal friend as well as an employer. I rarely blog her work in my own blog because I am so familiar with it I feel I can’t speak about it coherently or “objectively.” I have seen the inside of this sausage factory, and I have to tell you, each piece is made with pure love and goodness and joy by Raven. There is no other way to say it. She puts her heart into her creations; they are her vision and her art and she wants so greatly to share this beauty and fun with others in SL.

She has been preoccupied with new vistas in RL so she has not been in SL as much. However we speak on the phone frequently, and she has been supportive and enthusiastic about Fashion for Life. She also didn’t want to see Nevar’s and Ame’s hard work be lost so she was glad when I took it on but she has not been thrilled with not having me available to her. She will be glad when I am back at RFyre (as will I).

I am very emotional about Raven; she has been as dear a friend to me, in RL as in SL, as anyone for the past 3+ years. I couldn’t possibly fit into the blog here or on the Fashion for Life website (where I really should not get mushy and personal), how I feel. So this blog is entirely poorly written, clumsy, and not nearly good enough for what she and her work deserve.

~ Harper

As Fashion for Life closes, we have to give thanks to one of our sim sponsors, for many things. Raven Pennyfeather has always supported the RFL Clothing Fair and Fashion for Life. She made friends with Nevar and Amethyst and has had them to dinner in her RL home several times, supporting their work because she knew it was important and they were her friends. However, two years ago, Raven’s father was diagnosed with breast cancer, rare but not unknown in men. While she ran her business, House of RFyre, she ran from her house to his weekly to assist him (100 miles away), logging on from his home after she had taken him to his chemo treatments, to check her business and design. Raven had always supported RFL, but once his diagnosis came, it became even more important to her. Her donation for being a sim sponsor was entirely selfless—she wanted to put RFyre’s name on this important cause as a personal endorsement, especially as she has seen her father go into remission.

Raven’s support of Fashion for Life has been long-standing, first with Nevar and Ame and now with the new coleads, Harper and Syngen. In fact, Raven sacrificed her assistant, Harper, to FFL and has suffered (supposedly) with Harper so preoccupied. Thank you, Raven, for giving me the time and room to do this.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

It is a great honor to have Raven Pennyfeather be one of the sim sponsors at Fashion for Life. Her generous heart imbues all her work and her dark romantic nature translates to the vision for her work. Consider this couture offering from Raven with its leather jacket on top over a swirling translucent ethereal black skirt and topped with a smart top hat with lace veil. Raven never makes a minimal outfit—she truly wants to give her customers her best and all she can with each ensemble.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

One of Raven’s newer offerings is the Hearts on Fyre series, including this evening gown. Inspired by the designs of Ed Harvy, Raven made her own clothing “tattoo” motifs and carried them to this gown and to more casual sets for men and women. Her colors are rich and luxe.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

Raven has always aimed to fulfill her male customer’s needs as well. In this she has a very romantic vision as well. Her men are dressed in the finest materials—leather, satin, wool, lace. The handsome tux above from her Wintertide series can take a man from ballroom to personal Interview with the Vampire. The more formal Eduoard below with its shorter cut and tails and chained closure and romantic bow tie, can take a man to the most formal affair.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

One last day for Fashion for Life. Today. Get here NOW to get some of these beautiful items and many many more before they disappear and this whole beautiful please is gone!

Lapointe & Bastchild at Fashion for Life

18 03 2011

The love story of Paul Lapointe and BastChild Lotus is almost as romantic as their clothing. Married last fall in real life, the two originally met in SL and reached around the world to be with each other. Their love and romance imbues everything they create—you can go from dark gothic to sexy casual to pure beautiful to tall, dark and handsome when you shop at L&B, all with their cojoined style.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

Dark gothic is Lapointe & Bastchild’s bread and butter. Somehow the energy created between the two individuals brings out a dark romantic vision that is deliciously intriguing and sexy. Paul and BastChild agreed the New Orleans-influenced Irving Penn sim, built by Syngen Sohmers, was an ideal home for their store. New Orleans holds many fond memories for the newlyweds.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

Both creators have honed their skills and provide more and more creative work, serving all moods of their customers. For example, this sexy punky little outfit (shown with their versatile color-changing boots that include a hud—FFL Exclusive!) highlights how they can go from dramatic romanticism to sexy grunge in one turn.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

Even casual is no problem for L&B, as shown by this darling little outfit with its cropped hoodie sweater, distressed jeans and funky sculpty belt. Paul and BastChild’s talents contribute so much to SL and it’s an honor to have them sponsor a sim at Fashion for Life.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

And they also make men’s wear. This iconic tuxedo will make any man stand tall and handsome and take him around the grid in style. They also offer the incredibly-styled shoes shown (and honestly, there are only a handful of really great men’s shoe makers in SL).

Paul and BastChild have participated in Fashion for Life for several years because they know how important the work the American Cancer Society is. In 2007, cancer was the cause of death of 13% of the people worldwide (7.9 million). It killed 700,030 people in North America in 2007; 2,326,515 in Eastern Asia in one year; more than 50,000 in Australia that year; and 521,303 in Western Europe in 2007.  It’s a global disaster, much more expensive and tragic than any other disaster you might see on TV or in newspapers right now. Relief for this is needed year round, year after year. Paul and BastChild’s generous donation adds a small bit to this. They also know, despite the “American” in the Society’s name, their donation will help globally.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

Honor Paul’s and BastChild’s generous donation. Shop at Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.
