“Tell me what you eat, I’ll tell you who you are.” ~ Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

I am pretty excited. I just bought my first CSA share after attending a farmers’ open house at a local park. CSA means “Community Supported Agriculture,” and it means I just purchased a share of the crop a local farmer will be harvesting this year. Each week I will get something like a half bushel of a variety of produce (and eggs and other good stuff if I opt in) delivered to a home near me from a farm about an hour away. If you’re curious, you can click here to see a CSA box from another local farm being filled. I am excited because I have really enjoyed visiting farmers’ markets in my city and now it’s coming to me and I know I am helping support a local farming family. I will be challenged this summer and fall learning how to prepare some items I have not cooked with before—fennel, anyone? But I am taking to heart Alice Waters’ ideas about eating locally, eating in season and eating sustainably.

This darling patchwork dress from Ariadna Garrigus made me think about this again, though I signed up over a week ago and won’t see my first share until June. The beauty of her patchwork on this mesh skirt paired with a crocheted top made me think of homemade goodness and going back to the earth. She cinches it with a wide leather belt and the dress form comes in three other variations.

Aleida Rhode is offering this gorgeous skin at Skin Fair. In 7 tones with eyebrow variations and cleavage options. She also features 15 lipsticks in a variety of shades (not just pinks and reds) and all the appliers you would ever need. It’s Aleida’s typically high style, elegant approach to skin making.

A long braid, pulled up in back and bound in sections down its length is Mirja Mills’ newest offer. With wispy pieces slipping out in front, it’s romantic and sexy. With Mirja’s great HUD, especially the “natural” colors, it’s a great look for RP or every day wear.

Phenomenal Woman

Phenomenol Woman

It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

~ from “Phenomenol Woman” by Maya Angelou

Phenomenol Woman

Phenomenal woman, yep, that’s me. I can’t help but think it’s my look today. Start with Poulet Koenkamp’s newest dress, which comes in several color variations. With a patterned tiered skirt and a sweetheart neckline, this dress has a lot going on. I pair it with Mirja Mills’ newest jewelry set in black and white with teensy intricate design and beautifully rendered textures.

Phenomenol Woman

The story here, of course, is Nicole Button’s newest releases for Skin Fair 2014. These skins are phenomenal with lush skin tones and absolutely drop dead gorgeous features. I put this skin on and I was hooked. Each skin pack comes in 6 skin tones and includes two natural skins in bright and soft (meaning one is more burnished than the other), two lip glosses, four eyebrow colors, hairbases, and a ton of cleavage options. She also includes mesh ears and appliers for just about everything you ever need. Truth Hawks’ gorgeous full long locks complete my look, making it sexy and sensuous and woman—phenomenally.

Phenomenol Woman

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

“I don’t mind being burdened with being glamorous and sexual. Beauty and femininity are ageless and can’t be contrived, and glamour, although the manufacturers won’t like this, cannot be manufactured. Not real glamour; it’s based on femininity.” ~ Marilyn Monroe

Being glamorous in SL is a lot easier in SL than RL because there are so many with a glamorous vision to give us beauty. Mami Jewell recently created this gorgeous dress with her unique lush satin textures and shaping. She combines a beautiful off-the-shoulder dress with translucent flexi prims (notice how they don’t cast a shadow) to create a dress with true old-fashioned glamour. Worn with AvaGardner Kungler’s newest jewelry set, inspired by the colors of Brazilian carnival, and accessorized with a beaded clutch from Yula Finesmith, the look is drop dead gorgeous.

Chandra Masala is showing two new lines at the Skin Fair 2014. The Meenakshi skin comes in 5 tones with eyebrow variations, 6 lipsticks and 6 eyeshadows, and even an optional bindi plus cleavage and all the standard appliers. Chandra has touched this skin with her own spiciness and added elegant touches such as well-groomed, shapely brows (that can be altered quite drastically with her included bald heads.) Her skin is devastatingly elegant with an underlying sexiness. Deep dark brown eyes from Lano Ling (and brown eyes are not easy to pull off in SL) make the skin even more beautiful. I have worn one of Mirja Mills’ elegant up-dos, a gorgeous variation on the French twist, dramatically swept up and over.

A Good Man, Understand?

12 03 2014

A Good Man, Understand?

I’ve traveled for miles around
Seems like everybody wanna put me down
Because I’m a bluesman
But I’m a good man, understand

I went down to the bus station
Look upon the wall
My money is too light people
Couldn’t go no where at all
I’m a bluesman
But I’m a good man, understand

The burden that I carry, oh is so heavy
It seems like ain’t nobody in this great big world
That would wanna, wanna help old B.
Hey, but I’ll, I would be all right people
Just give me a break, good things come
To those who wait, and I’ve waited a long time
I’m a bluesman
But I’m a good man, understand

~ “Blues Man” by B.B. King

A Good Man, Understand?

The lyrics are not about me—they are about a good man I met through SL who changed my trajectory in SL in the best way possible. Dirk Talamasca, the original Land Baron, the blues man, the Black Hat, mentor, and original FIC, is terribly ill right now. His brother has been sending reports via Dirk’s account in Facebook and has said Dirk has taken a turn for the worse. If you’re an oldbie in SL like me, you knew Dirk, probably personally as I did. He rented land to people, he mentored, he argued, he encouraged, AND he flirted shamelessly. He was a strong, lively personality that helped shape the SL we all know in so many ways no one will ever be able to list them all. I feel so unable to articulate Dirk’s importance to SL, to the community, to what we all have become. Take my word for it—he’s a big deal.

So this post is dedicated to Dirk with a blues song and a sexy look because, frankly, Dirk never shied away from enjoying being a man.

I start the look with this sexy dress from Kim Lysette at LivGlam from the K Collection. The dress comes with a HUD with 20 different textures on it so when you purchase it, you basically get the ultimate fat pack. The mesh fits well—I barely had to modify my shape for it to fit me to a T. Sexy high heeled shoes from Eboni Khan make my legs look long. (Please note, I am wearing size S feet and they fit the shoe perfectly. I can not guarantee if you use a different sized Slink foot that they will fit as well.) I used green polish on my fingernails and pink the on toenails, both from the same HUD set from Sasy Scarborough. My jewelry is one of the sets Maxi Gossamer is offering at Collabor88 with color change stones.

A Good Man, Understand?

Umazuma Metaluna is premiering this gorgeous, luscious skin at Skin Fair 2014. With bee stung lips and a blushing countenance, Uma offers the skin in 8 tones with blush and glow layers and a unique set of lip tattoos that come in different intensities so you can custom color them using the SL editor to your pleasure. I tinted my lips with a very slight orange, aiming for a natural coral.

My eye makeup is one of the bold looks that Madrid Solo is selling at Skin Fair 2014. As per her usual work, the colors are bold and arresting but not garish. The eyeliner gives a special sexiness to this look. The set includes 15 eyeshadows and 14 lipsticks.

Finally, Mirja Mills has released this gorgeous, pulled back hair with a combo of mesh and flexi prims. Paired with the widow’s peak hairbase she includes, it’s a gorgeous look with sexy curly locks.

eA Good Man, Understand?

Hey, but I’ll, I would be all right people
Just give me a break, good things come
To those who wait, and I’ve waited a long time
I’m a bluesman
But I’m a good man, understand

A Good Man, Understand?

For the Architects

26 02 2014

For the Architects

The first gesture of an architect is to draw a perimeter; in other words, to separate the microclimate from the macro space outside. This in itself is a sacred act. Architecture in itself conveys this idea of limiting space. It’s a limit between the finite and the infinite. From this point of view, all architecture is sacred.   Mario Botta

For the Architects

I have a huge thing for architects and architecture. It’s the combination of artistry and engineering, the aesthetic and the practical, the communication to the human condition through space that is so amazing to me. I have visited many beautiful spaces in my life and my breath has been taken away.

For the Architects

I am not an architect—I lived with one for a time. My best friend from childhood is now a practicing architect for a German company in Chicago. She designs buildings around the world. I am so damn proud of her because I remember the drawings she made of houses for us when we were ten and sitting in the living room of her parents’ tiny suburban ranch home and now she works for an international firm.

For the Architects

I know many real life architects in SL as well—degreed, licensed, practicing. I read a funny thing about romcoms that they always have a main man who is an architect, and this guy always seems to have a great house, job and seemingly endless time for romance. Truth is that the architects I know, even partners in firms, drive old cars, live in fixer-uppers (because they are doing the fixing up), and work 60-80 hours a week. They are interesting group for sure, but generally overworked.

For the Architects

For the Architects

Nowadays most architects work on computers, endlessly between the CAD work and reading emails and architectural code, but at one time they worked on paper. Think Frank Lloyd Wright when you view this gorgeous set of items Tobias Convair has created for the Arcade (opening in a week). You can collect all the fun stuff that even seasoned modern day architects drool over—drafting table, pencil cup, drawings, cabinet, stool, french curves, compass, model—and even an architect’s scale (which is so evocative of one my dad used to have that I want to pick it up, weigh it in my hand and feel its smooth surfaces). They are rendered in exquisite, loving detail by Tobias, who is himself an architect. The brilliant part is there are all no copy/transfer so if you have an architect friend or two (or one that would like to be one), you can purchase the pieces at the Arcade or a yard sale and give them as a gift.

For the Architects

I dressed like my dear friend, who tends towards stylish but mostly practical (her shoes, once she gets to the office after walking from the L, get changed to a more stylish pair and promptly kicked off under the desk). A sleeveless bowed top and long slacks from Thetra Blackheart are the main outfit in complimentary, almost neutral tones. Pops of color come from Ariadne Garrigus’ modern glasses and Erratic Rain’s absolutely sexy and chic sandals (made for Slink feet).

For the Architects

My hair and makeup are pictures of simplicity—there simply is not enough time for overdoing makeup and hair when buildings need to be designed! I love Mirja Mill’s darling updo with a built in animation to let the hair down into a ponytail. After all these years, Mirja still finds new styles and has fun making them for her customers, and this one is particularly fun. My skin is one of Shyla Diggs Boucher’s newest, being offered at the Arcade as a rare. If you want this rare skin with dark brows, find a friend who is willing to swap with you! Or pass your extras on to your alt.

For the Architects

Architecture is not simply a job. It is a lifestyle. It is a way of looking at the world. It is a verb. It is a constant exploration where one looks for and finds inspiration in the world around them, and then applies that inspiration to create something completely new. And that thing we create is beautiful and makes a difference in the world.  ~  J. Brantley Hightower

When Spring Comes….

When Spring Comes...

“If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

When Spring Comes...

When spring comes, and undoubtedly it will because a hyacinth in a pot on my dining room table is belling her fragrance and telling me excitedly that spring is coming, some day, soon. My bike is sitting out in the garage, orange and bright blue and hopeful. My gardening clogs are lying obediently by the back door, biding their time. It’s going to come, spring is, I know it.

And when it does I will be damn happy, as I am sure anyone will. This dress from Amberchaudry Corpur reminds me of that happiness with its pastel colors and glittering lines. In shadows, the alphas in the skirt don’t do the dress the greatest favor but in the light most would wear this—unshadowed—it’s quite pretty, and quite a deal at the Designer Showcase. I also got my pink and pretty nail appliers at the Designer Showcase, from S1nful Viper, who features several pastel sets. My bracelets feature materials from Maxi Gossamer.

When Spring Comes...

I rather adore the new skin from Izzie Button that she is offering at the Liaison Collaborative. She offers appliers in her store for all her skin tones and a set of makeups with this skin, which is beautiful and sexy in the best ways. My updo is one of Mirja Mill’s gorgeously created buns with the great hair base. It looks so sleek and so sexy this way. And earrings are Plurabell Laszlo’s offering for I <3 Role Play. They can be used with any outfit that needs a touch of spring.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Too Much of a Good Thing

“Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!” ~ Mae West

Too Much of a Good Thing

So too much of a good thing can be a good thing when it’s cantaloupe or spring weather or Sunday afternoon naps. The Girl Scout cookies we just got, on the other hand…. You can never have too much good fashion, however, and LivGlam and K Collection has a way of giving us a lot of a good thing but it’s never enough. Take this sexy dress from Kim Lysette— a simple black and white pattern with subtle red undertones over a long sleeved dress with a low cut back. It’s just enough of too much.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Tobias Convair finished this sectional for FaMESHed in the nick of time for your personal pleasure. With single, couples and adult poses, this handsome piece can fit perfectly in your Convair loft from the last FaMESHED or in any space that needs a modern look and an adult feel. The pillows and blanket are color change, so you can fit it into several color schemes and it comes not only in black but also in brown and white.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Sawsan Secretspy offers this lusciously beautiful skin for the girl who can never have enough of being pretty. With darkly lined eyes and a fresh tangerine lip, this is the skin for the girl who is past red lipstick. My fringed bangs is Mirja Mills’ newest peek-a-boo style with waves flowing over my shoulders. A chic arty ring from AvaGardner Kungler at the Dressing Room Fusion makes this look just right.

Cherchez La Femme

Cherchez la Femme

Il y a une femme dans toutes les affaires ; aussitôt qu’on me fait un rapport, je dis : « Cherchez la femme ! » ~ Alexandre Dumas

Cherchez la Femme

The phrase “Chercher la femme” came from Alexandre Dumas in his book “The Mohicans of Paris,” and has come to mean that whenever a man acts out of character, it means there is a woman he is trying to impress. Our “femme,” in one of Mami Jewell’s fantastic releases she made for the ladies of the Miss Virtual World (in this case Eva Luxury), is bound to make any man lose his step. With its sexy, dramatic lines and beautiful prim skirts, this is a gorgeous combination of mesh and flexy. Mami has embraced mesh as I knew she would—using it to make her elegant vision rather than letting herself be directed by it.

Cherchez la Femme

My beautiful skin is one of the many Shyla Diggs and Tricky Boucher are offering at Collabor88. With ruby red lips and smoky eyes, it’s elegance matches this look. My upswept hair from Mirja Mills is so sophisticated and so sexy. Her hairbase makes the look complete with the twist of the hair going into the mesh. And earrings from AvaGardner Kungler add just enough glitter and shine to lift this look to captivating and dangerous.

“Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the untroubled spirit either.” ~  Elizabeth Zimmermann

Close Knit

My dream someday is to knit a sweater or dress or skirt. I have managed scarves (many of them), a few hats, a few shawls, mittens, even socks, but sweaters are daunting. I once knew a beautiful Russian woman who could knit dresses for her gorgeous self without a pattern.

This dress from Ariadne Garrigus reminded me of Svetlana’s skill. With a cable running down the length of the dress and a thick chunky brown yarn, the dress is lovely for cold winter days. The belt would appear to be white in my photos but it’s actually tan—the materials setting in the SL Viewer picks up the sheen Arianda gave it.

Close Knit

The new hat and hair set from Mirja Mills is a perfect accompaniment to the dress. Also knit in a chunky yarn, the scarf comes with a color change HUD as does the hat on the hair. I am loving the options these give to any look. My skin is Ydreece Forster’s newest. She is changing her brand name from Mirror’s Enigma to Morphine so if you hear about Morphine skins, that’s the old Mirror’s Enigma. Ydreece gives a fresh look to her skins. Without a lot of makeup, the skins are a perfect palette for cosmetic layers, though I opted for the simple bare look.

Violet in the Snow

“Stars will blossom in the darkness, Violets bloom beneath the snow.” ~ Julia C.R. Dorr

Violet in the Snow

The beautiful little dark purple violet is a flower of early spring, the first color to emerge after a long winter. This beautiful coat by SamanthaSJones reminds me so much of that beautiful little flower, especially with its deep lovely brocade texture with glistening accents. The buttons, the wide collar, the pocket plackets are all a romantic’s dream. The HUD comes with color change so you are not limited to just the violet—there is a deep green, gold, etc. Get the coat—you get a HUD with six colors in total. (And secret: if you rush over there you may still find it out for 55L if they didn’t pick it up yet!)

I wore Maxi Gossamer’s lovely little dragon’s egg pendant, which she is featuring at Collabor88. The stone, as you can see, has materials features so the light plays off the surface in a way you won’t see on most jewelry. I accessorized with tights from Bax Coen and fur boots from Cerberus Noel I chose especially for this look.

Violet in the Snow

Aida Ewing is releasing a “prerelease” line of skins at The Secret Story. Get the sneak peek on this new line in several different darling makeups. And Mirja Mills is up to sleek again with her updo, made for Amita Yorcliffe for the Miss Virtual World Challenge. Side swept and sophisticated, this style finishes my look with elegance.
