Now tell me what you know
Is this a story or
An allegory for the racket knocking at my door?
What’s the difference if it’s real or a dream?
Imagination playing tricks on me

~ “Murakami” by Made in Heights

Murakami

I had just finished reading Haruki Murakami’s newest book, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, when this song came on KCRW and I thought, Really? I have to say that it is not his best though I did enjoy it greatly. There is something about Murakami that is very satisfying—perhaps his universalism (he’s well loved by people around the world), his minimalism (think Raymond Carver, who is a strong influence), or his benign sense of alienation (never has felt very “Japanese,” he says).

So the post is named after him and the song and a message to Mami Jewell, who keeps promising me she will read his books. I would want to know if she likes them, especially this one or Norwegian Wood (hint, Mami).  I chose this dress because it’s as simple and elegant and fluid as Murakami’s work. The entire dress is mesh, which is a change for Mami, who prefers to work with prims or prims and mesh. I loved how she translated the movement of sheer scarves into the mesh pieces that wrap around.

My pretty shoes and jewelry are both featured at La Metallique Fair. AvaGardner Kungler has made a beautiful collection of jewelry for the fair with geometric gems in elegant gold contemporary settings. My elegant high heels are Senzati0n Domenitzo’s metallic contribution. I love that she makes her great designs for Slink feet now!

Murakami

I found this simple updo from Minami Susanowa for a touch of elegance. Sometimes that’s all that is needed, as sometimes a simple aphorism or description will do in literature (Murakami again). Finally, Belleza is having a big sale to retire skins, and they are priced at 100L each. This is one such skin and I wore it in this blog to show my dear readers that they are well worth it. This is the first I put on from the Shyla line and it’s still flawless with beautiful features. You won’t look “out of date” or “old.” Tricky’s work holds up!

Five Years

Five Years

“Five years from now, you’re the same person except for the people you’ve met and the books you’ve read.” ~ John Wooden

Five Years

I realized a couple days ago that I started my blog five years ago. The first year I blogged every single day, faithfully, and then after year two I kind of let myself off the hook for every day and now I average about 3-4 times a week (or sometimes twice a day as when I was blogging Hair Fair and sometimes not at all as when I was working on the SL11B blog).

I started my blog when my friend and now partner, Callie, asked me to be a moderator for the fashion bloggers group. I was not a blogger myself but she knew she could keep me in hand. Working for a designer, I definitely had ideas about what bloggers should do if they wanted to suggest they would promote a brand (I still do). So I started my own blog to see how onerous those requirements were. (Short answer: it’s tempting to PS the hell out of my photos but I won’t do it so my readers see the actual content, SLurls are a pain in the ass but necessary so people know where to find things, and drama is not in short supply but I try to keep my head down.)

I also started my blog to get into the habit of writing every day. I had read Haruki Murakami’s book, What I Talk About When I Talk About Runningwhere he had written about the pain and joy of writing and running, and the discipline of doing both. Doing my blog has enriched my intellectual life and allowed me an outlet to discuss what I am thinking about, reading, and doing.

Five Years

Blogging fashion for SL has changed quite a lot during this time. The number of bloggers has exploded and the whole blogger “industry” has changed quite a bit. I have been lucky  as I have wonderful designers who send me things to show in my blog. I have tried to honor their hard work with my own hard work. It’s not always perfect and certainly not the most spectacular, but I have been tried to exhibit consistency and integrity. Thank you to the many designers who have contributed to my blog. I hope I gave you something in return.

Over the last five years, the opportunities to enhance my blog have changed too. WordPress offers tons more templates and CSS options; Flickr recently changed up how they link; the SL Facebook community has exploded. I have tried to keep up with most of those things. I find it has become more time consuming to produce each blog entry as I navigate all the new things I need to do to keep myself relevant.  For example, I revamped the blog over the past few days with a new theme (which you see here—what do you think?)

It has been an honor to be asked to create and contribute to blogs including being a fashion blogger for Koinup, running the Costa Rica fashion blogs and then Dream Seekers Estates, creating the new blog for LivGlam and now Damselfly and Sage Fashions, and running the social media for SL11B, including running their blog (in which I created every single page and entry you see). My biggest honor, of course, was being asked repeatedly to create images for Linden Lab for their splash pages for Second Life and Marketplace.

Here is the grand finale: if you are a regular reader of my blog, thank you. You have been my most important supporter, and I would not have kept doing this for five years without you. When people tell me that they read my blog, I am always excited and touched. It is really important to know there is someone out there who “hears” my words and finds something of interest, information or thought for themselves. Without you, there is no reason to do this.

Glamorous

“I don’t mind being burdened with being glamorous and sexual. Beauty and femininity are ageless and can’t be contrived, and glamour, although the manufacturers won’t like this, cannot be manufactured. Not real glamour; it’s based on femininity.” ~ Marilyn Monroe

Glamorous

Being glamorous in SL is a lot easier in SL than RL because there are so many with a glamorous vision to give us beauty. Mami Jewell recently created this gorgeous dress with her unique lush satin textures and shaping. She combines a beautiful off-the-shoulder dress with translucent flexi prims (notice how they don’t cast a shadow) to create a dress with true old-fashioned glamour. Worn with AvaGardner Kungler’s newest jewelry set, inspired by the colors of Brazilian carnival, and accessorized with a beaded clutch from Yula Finesmith, the look is drop dead gorgeous.

Glamorous

Chandra Masala is showing two new lines at the Skin Fair 2014. The Meenakshi skin comes in 5 tones with eyebrow variations, 6 lipsticks and 6 eyeshadows, and even an optional bindi plus cleavage and all the standard appliers. Chandra has touched this skin with her own spiciness and added elegant touches such as well-groomed, shapely brows (that can be altered quite drastically with her included bald heads.) Her skin is devastatingly elegant with an underlying sexiness. Deep dark brown eyes from Lano Ling (and brown eyes are not easy to pull off in SL) make the skin even more beautiful. I have worn one of Mirja Mills’ elegant up-dos, a gorgeous variation on the French twist, dramatically swept up and over.

Cherchez La Femme

Cherchez la Femme

Il y a une femme dans toutes les affaires ; aussitôt qu’on me fait un rapport, je dis : « Cherchez la femme ! » ~ Alexandre Dumas

Cherchez la Femme

The phrase “Chercher la femme” came from Alexandre Dumas in his book “The Mohicans of Paris,” and has come to mean that whenever a man acts out of character, it means there is a woman he is trying to impress. Our “femme,” in one of Mami Jewell’s fantastic releases she made for the ladies of the Miss Virtual World (in this case Eva Luxury), is bound to make any man lose his step. With its sexy, dramatic lines and beautiful prim skirts, this is a gorgeous combination of mesh and flexy. Mami has embraced mesh as I knew she would—using it to make her elegant vision rather than letting herself be directed by it.

Cherchez la Femme

My beautiful skin is one of the many Shyla Diggs and Tricky Boucher are offering at Collabor88. With ruby red lips and smoky eyes, it’s elegance matches this look. My upswept hair from Mirja Mills is so sophisticated and so sexy. Her hairbase makes the look complete with the twist of the hair going into the mesh. And earrings from AvaGardner Kungler add just enough glitter and shine to lift this look to captivating and dangerous.

Goodwill to All

Goodwill to All

I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. ~ Charles Dickens

122013_002

One of my favorite fantasies about Christmas comes from long romantic novels I read like Cecilia by Fanny Burney (yes, I read the whole thing.. ack) or Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen or even Downton Abbey. The ladies dress in their finest, attend a winter ball in which they are whisked into an exceedingly warm room of dancers and high intrigue and waltzed around the room by handsome gentlemen of means, all jockeying for their favor. And they do this through the “season” of parties and balls. Everyone speaks in charming, euphemistic language, fans are fluttered, and hearts are joined and broken.

So when I see an old fashioned tree like this from Tobias Convair (and yes, I know it has electric lights on it from Tya Fallingbridge—don’t be pedantic about my fantasy here), I want to put on a ball gown and ready myself for the ball. In this case I wear Mami Jewell’s newest gown, which she made for Anjelica Carling, the 2014 Miss Virtual World. With a sparkling texture across the  bodice and in the flexi prims, the dress is a picture of sparkling holiday beauty, especially paired with Maxi Gossamer’s sparkling jewelry from Fameshed.

122013_001

The beauty of this look comes from Rocketta Haven’s newest skin. With a unique beauty that is Rocketta’s own, espeically the full pouty lips that go beyond the usual beestung look ad the lined eyes, the skin harkens back to an old-fashioned beauty. Paired with Silverr Andel’s eyes and Mirja Mill’s latest hair, a vintage wavy ‘do, our heroine has a touch of tragedy and romance to her look.

I Wanna Be Evil

I Wanna Be Evil

I’ve posed for pictures with Iv’ry Soap
I’ve petted stray dogs, and shied clear of dope
My smile is brilliant, my glance is tender
But I’m noted most for my unspoiled gender

Prim and proper, the girl who’s never been kissed
Well, I’m tired of being pure and not chaste

Like something that seeks its level
I wanna go to the devil
I wanna be evil, I wanna spit tacks
I wanna be evil, and cheat at jacks
I wanna be wicked, I wanna tell lies
I wanna be mean, and throw mud pies

I wanna be evil, little evil me
Just as mean and evil as I can be

~ “ I Want to Be Evil” by Eartha Kitt

I Wanna Be Evil

I wanna be evil and the best way to be evil is to be deadly beautiful. With one of Mami Jewell’s newest gowns, I am wicked in the sexiest way. Mami has embraced mesh and brought her lush textures to a medium that is crowded with less-than-ideal artwork. She has also done what I love seeing designers do—mixing prims and mesh—this time with a feathered collar to create a dramatic, face-framing shape and beautiful satin flexi prims on the bottom for movement and elegance. Everything this gown is dramatic but not overstated.

I Wanna Be Evil

My vampiress look is achieved from several elements. First, Aida Ewing featured the Lucy skins a few weeks ago and with their “snow” complexion and very subtle brows and lips contrasting with a dark dark eye, they are perfect for this gorgeous specter. I found fangs from Sissy Pessoa were a perfect tattoo overlay—not too overt and elegant. And Carina Larsen’s white, elegantly rolled up-do is the epitome of restrained refinement that our cold-blooded beauty needs.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen

But you, you have disappeared
You have been released
You are flecks of light–you are missed
Somewhere, spinning round the sun
Circling the moon
Traveling through time
You are missed

~ “Copenhagen,” by Lucinda Williams

Two people I know in SL have lost parents recently in the past couple days—both losses sudden and unexpected. One of these people was a dear friend of mine and his father lived a full life to raise two good sons and enjoy 58 years of marriage (and a brownie sundae when they went out to dinner to celebrate their anniversary the weekend before). The other person I don’t know as well but she is a great creator in SL, and I am sure her mother was a lovely person because she certainly is. This poignant song from Lucinda Williams has a beautiful message for a lost loved one which I hope will bring comfort to both of them.

Copenhagen

It’s a rather clumsy transition to go into talking about a mere virtual dress after such weighty subjects, but this is a fashion blog after all. I start with Mami Jewell’s beautiful gown recently released, the gown created for Miss Brazil in Miss Virtual World. It has all the hallmarks of Mami’s incredible styling—great textures, glittering touches (but never over the top), lush coloring and an incredible silhouette. From the cap sleeves to the full skirt, it’s sexy and elegant.

Copenhagen

I chose to wear with one of Queue Marlowe’s new hair releases under her brand, .b. Her blondes are to die for—not at all “yellow” and full of depth and shine. I love how Queue does waves and curls in her hair—no one’s hair is uniformly one curl and she shows that perfectly in this style.

My skin is from a creator I tripped across—Marisa Felia. I rather like her work with its elegant face and very subtle sprinkling of freckles and gentle blush. I hope to be showing more.

My necklace, from Kesseret Steeplechase, says it all—love—and is perhaps a message to one cherished and remembered rather than a simply a lover.

Katniss

Katniss

I have been reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins this week, as recommended to me by my pal, Bram Ellison. Set in the post apocalyptic world of the North America, a country called Panem, our heroine, Katniss, is a participant and survivor, with her District 12 associate, Peeta, of the Hunger Games, a televised survival game between children chosen from each of the 12 districts of Panem to fight to the death to prove that even children are not beyond the reach of the Capital, the existing power. Pressured by President Snow after a seeming act of defiance in surviving the Hunger Games, Katniss is coerced into pretending to love Peeta. This ensemble and reading the book inspired me to create a narrative from Katniss’ perspective. She is being dressed for the night before her wedding to Peeta; the intent is to bring romance to the Hunger Games for the television audience.

Katniss

Effie wakes me from a nightmare-filled nap that afternoon. “Rise and shine!” she chirps cheerily. “Tonight Caesar Flickerman will be interviewing you and Peeta, and then they will be filming you in a romantic dance. You have to look your most alluring for Peeta.”

After Flavius, Venia and Octavius have done their usual magic of converting me from Seam denizen to glamorous victor (always an arduous task for all of us despite their careless gossip and chatter), Cinna eases my dress over my head. Blooming a deep burgundy into a glittering purple hem, the dress swooshes around me almost airlessly despite the heaviness and richness of the fabric. The bodice leaves my shoulders exposed above a blossom of fabric, and Cinna dusts them with a subtle glitter. “This deep purple is the color of royalty but also of passion,” he explains to me. “It represents your love for Peeta. He should not be able to resist nor will the audience.”

Katniss

He smiles at me as he pushes feathers into my updo, dotting my hair with diamonds. “These feathers represent a bird in flight, Katniss.” I know he means the mockingjay, and I realize then that Cinna fully supports our dissent as well and that this is his very subtle message. I feel a renewed conviction about what we are about to do.

Cinna dabs his fingers into a jar of dark makeup. “I am going to do a different sort of look tonight,” he explains, as he applies the makeup in streaks around my eyes, covering the black eye Haymitch accidentally gave me in training. “We will say it’s a romantic mask.” I look in the mirror and what I see in the makeup are tears, the tears I want to shed for the other victors, who will die, the tears I want to shed for Gale and Prim and my mother, but mostly the tears I want to shed for Peeta and myself. He presses the mockingjay pin into my hand and I curl my fingers around it.

I put on a brave smile and walk through the tunnels to the arena.

Katniss

“The bird, the pin, the song, the berries, the watch, the cracker, the dress that burst into flames. I am the mockingjay. The one that survived despite the Capitol’s plans. The symbol of the rebellion.” ~ Katniss in “Catching Fire,” the second book in “The Hunger Games” series by Suzanne Collins

From Blossoms

From Blossoms

O, to take what we love inside,
to carry within us an orchard, to eat
not only the skin, but the shade,
not only the sugar, but the days, to hold
the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into
the round jubilance of peach.

~ From “From Blossoms” by Li-Young Lee

From Blossoms

A favorite poem of mine is from Li-Young Lee, about eating warm summer peaches at a roadstand. The simple enjoyment of sunshine and life is so abundant in this poem I love to read it out loud just to roll the sweetness on my own tongue. (Please, click the link and read it in full yourself.) This glorious dress from Mami Jewell reminded me of the poem with its beautiful simplicity and elegant lines. Lace and an undertint of a peach color is all that’s needed to bring life to this gorgeous gown.

From Blossoms

My glowing skin is a new one from Brendon Papp. With its luscious tone, soft dusting of freckles, elegant eyebrows and simple loveliness, it’s a welcome blank palette for makeups. I chose a sophisticated eyeliner from Kianna Noel and matched a slightly messy updo from Thora Charron. Twinkling earrings from Belle Roussel dress the look up a bit (check out the very slight bit of bling). This is a sweet young peach who has had to work a little to make herself seem more sophisticated.

From Blossoms

There are days we live
as if death were nowhere
in the background; from joy
to joy to joy, from wing to wing,
from blossom to blossom to
impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.

Leather Cinderella

Leather Princess

Once upon a time in a homestead sim far far away (probably Zindra), in a stately sculpty chateau lived a widowed gentleman and his lovely daughter, Cinderella. While he loved his daughter, he was concerned for her well-being—he thought she needed a mother to teach her how to tweak her shape and position her eyelashes. So he partnered a woman, HotMama51 Paine,  who had two daughters—Squeakieee278 Resident and 2Fly4U Afterthought and gave her an allowance for all the girls’ needs. Then he was called away to Open Sim so he left Cinderella with his new partner.

While the mother and her daughters ran around the grid looking for shoes to match their eyes, Cinderella had to resort to camping and hanging out at lucky chairs. (C does not come up often, she found.) Cinderella found herself having to pick up all the packages the sisters and mother opened and left lying around the sim, even in her small 117-prim corner. Through it all she remained ever gentle and kind, for with each dawn (4 times in 24 hours), she found new hope that some day her dream of a happy second life would come true.

Leather Princess

One day she rezzed in to see a huge invitation with particles flying out of it in the middle of the sim. “Come to the ball—meet Prince Philip. Wear your best bling for a night of dancing and romance.” She clicked the invite and it spewed a notecard with a landmark attached. “The Big Ball, Magical Forest (128, 100, 1001)” it said. The particles were causing sim lag, so Cinderella deleted it.

“Leave that there!” sneered her stepsister, Squeakieee278. “I like how it looks.”

Her other sister, 2Fly4U snorted. “She thinks she can go too. Well, she can’t–she still has newbie eyes!”

For days the sisters flew back and forth from stores and dropped boxes from Marketplace all over the sim, trying on outfit after outfit, dressing up their avatars enough so that Prince Philip would spot them through the haze of gray and lag at the Ball. Hair, shoes, dresses, eyes, skins—all were tried on to the point the asset servers were slowed down for the rest of the grid. Cinderella continued to clean up after them, deleting prim after prim to keep the sim clean.

Leather Princess

The evening of the ball, Cinderella settled in to sort the Midnight Mania items in her inventory while the sisters adjusted and primped. When every last prim was in place, the sisters tp’d out (or tried to—their scripted shoes and hair made it hard for them to get anywhere). The sisters finally relogged at the ball sim while Cinderella was left behind alone to delete the remainder of their packages.

Suddenly in a poof a tiny rezzed into the sim. Her name, “FairyGodmother” included the display name “The Real Deal.” A bunny, she was holding a great big wand with particles flying out of it. She waddled up to Cinderella and said, “You’re going to that ball. Sending items.. ready?”

Cinderella nodded, confused but opened her inventory. A folder dropped in and Cinderella donned it. A beautiful dress with an ethereal pink-tinged ballgown rezzed on her body. FairyGodmother fluttered up to cinch the laces on the back of the leather corset a little tighter and fluff the material at the bodice. “Mami Jewell,” the bunny smiled. “Only the best for you dear. And my, leather suits you.”

A wave of the magic wand and poof, a skin appeared in Cinderella’s Body Parts. Cinderella dragged it on and gasped and her new face and body. Her eyeshadow glistened, her lips puckered in a full juicy smile. The bunny grinned (as bunnies do) and said, “esra Noyes—quite exotic, quite sexy.”

The bunny tossed another object at her and Cinderella threw it on. Wild, windblown hair from Mirja Mills. Cinderella felt suddenly glamorous. Another object appeared and upon putting it on, Cinderella discovered it was an exquisitely ornate choker from Abraxxa Anatine.

The bunny squinted. “For goodness sake, you have NEWBIE eyes. Who let you walk around like that?” A pair of eyes popped into inventory and Cinderella double clicked. She went from glassy-eyed stare to soulful and sexy in the time they took to rez thanks to Ikon Innovia.

The bunny dusted off her paws. “My work is done here. You do realize it’s not about getting Prince Charming–it’s about looking good. You know how to teleport–the rest is up to you.” Cinderella restored the landmark from trash, took a deep breath and double clicked. Finding the rest of her fantasy was up to her….
