I Left My Heart in San Francisco

I just got back from SLCC in San Francisco. Whew! What a great city San Francisco is, with its hills and beautiful vistas, open streets, friendly people, and casually cosmopolitan attitude.

The women are beautiful in San Francisco, but not in the self-conscious way I have found in other cities. Their beauty comes from their confidence—they are happy, healthy and free, open and friendly. There is a diversity of women—different sizes, races, classes, and orientations. There is home to all of them.

It’s also a home to great nightclubs and restaurants. Eshi and I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying dinner with DB Bailey and his wife Judith in North Beach. I had also been invited out by my friend Henri but left before I could see him. Henri’s well-versed in the ins and outs of night life in San Francisco. He’s got the city in the palm of his hand.

So when I saw the new sandals that Maitreya Gold just put out, I knew they would have been perfect for going out with Henri. With their broad strappy leather ties and wood soles (and look on the bottom—even the shoe size), these shoes would catch the eye of any man (or woman). And oh, the textures… the leather is so well textured I can feel its suppleness around my ankles. Purr…

This dress from Baiastice is a perfect accompaniment. Women in San Francisco are not ostentatious but they do like their fashion. Dresses there are hand made, well done, and high priced because they demand craftsmanship. Constricted tailoring (except in the notable BDSM clubs), fussiness and heaviness are not fashionable. This dress fills the bill with its casual but stylish neckline and skirt. Sissy’s work has improved dramatically over the year, from her choppy photosourced fashions to this well-envisioned and well-constructed couture.

Lamb Bellic is doing some great hair for .lamb. I really like the look of this ponytail—not too messy, not too sleek. And Abraxxa Anatine has raised the bar for jewelry in SL. I desperately want this gorgeous necklace, which would be easily found in any fashionable boutique in San Fran.

I have always liked this outfit. I bought it a while back on a Japanese sim and always loved putting it on

It’s short and flirty. Piah Noel has done a great job of making a “schoolgirl” outfit that is not so blatantly schoolgirl. With its cute floral skirt and three-quarter length sleeved knit sweater, it’s perfect for running around town.

I imagined it would look perfect with bangs (these from Zero Style)…

… and knee high boots (these from Enkythings).

Feeling Sunshine

Kotobuki Jewell at :bijou: has been doing some fun and stylish things with sculpties and textures for a while now. She has a real sense of bright colors and urban style, and she mixes system pieces, prims, and sculpties in delightful and funky ways.

Feeling Sunshine

I chose to show this outfit because it’s pretty indicative of Kotobuki’s work. She uses a fabulous system piece on top to balance the fuller sculpty knickers. She attends to the details with a tied waist and cuffs on the pants.

Feeling Sunshine

I am showing this with Amerie Spitteler’s Mint. The style is contemporary and doesn’t have that same cutesiness vs. wildness that so many styles seem to fall into.

I put on Storm Schmooz’ Sandals. They come with the black base you see here or an equally gorgeous wood base. Storm made these before the toe/foot shoe craze and they are pretty darn sexy, even without the toes.

Cinderella for a Day

I am featuring another one of Shenlei Flesheart’s students at Shengri-La. Missy Lavecchia, like many women who enter SL, has fallen in love with the idea of dressing up in a full skirt with twinkling sequins and bows and all the pretty things girls really like, and she envisions this dream with Bella Fantastique.

Missy made this lovely evening gown—MS Midnight—for one of her classes with Shenlei. With it’s full skirt and sparkling detail, Missy captures the fantasy we all have of feeling oh so pretty. Missy ingeniously puts a sparkling overlay on the skirt with scalloped chains of sparkles. What is hard to show in the photo is how fluidly these layers move—it’s actually quite captivating. Missy repeats that sparkle motif along the decollatage and around the low cut back. Her seams are, as one would expect of one of Shen’s students, dead on. For a relative newbie (she first rezzed in March this year), Missy is taking SL by storm.

I styled this dress with a dramatic updo from Sky Everett Designs—the Sovereign, and I piled on the jewels to turn this dress from pretty to royal.

This ensemble is completed with Cinderella’s glass slippers from Melanie Zhao. Thank you, Melanie, for knowing every girl’s secret desire—a glass slipper to leave for her Prince Charming to find.

New Designers

Shenlei Flesheart, RL CEO of the Fashion Institute of America and apparel designer, has deep involvement in Second Life. Once the owner of Prim and Proper, an in-world historical and vintage fashion store, Shen now owns the Shengri-La family of sims and keeps herself busy building on OpenSim as part of a research collaboration and working on an actual design application for the apparel industry. Shen has also recently published a book about fashion design, available on Amazon.com called Designing Dreams.

Recently, Shen called me over to her sim to introduce me to her students—a trio of ladies who have been taking a multi-week class in Second Life fashion design with Shen based on Shen’s experience. I reviewed their work with interest. Each of the three ladies has a definite vision, and while they were all beginning designers, they showed a lot of promise.

Today, I am featuring the work of one of Shen’s students, Trinity Hartunian. Trinity is not new to Second Life and this shows in her work. She has a fine understanding of system pieces and shading and is developing a strong brand, Category 5, with the tag line “A force to be reckoned with.” Trinity has covered all bases right off the bat with a great website and Flickr page, and offers her designs on XStreetSL.

New Designers

This dress, one of three colors available from Trinity for a mere 25L (!), has well shaped system pieces, PERFECT seams, and a stylish versatility that can take a lady from business to pleasure with just a change of accessories. Worn with a skirt shape, this dress is sexy, classy and low arc (if you need to have that for your system). Yes, you CAN look good without prims if the system pieces are done right.

I dressed the outfit up with accessories from =DeLa*=. These are the most stylish cuffs I have found in SL.

New Designers

I opted to style this dress with as-yet unreleased shoes from HoneyBear Lilliehook, another new designer. HoneyBear’s “Bear Feet Savvy” shoes are another entry into the toe/foot sandal market. With it’s sexy shape and texturing, this shoe at 299L is a steal. The shoe comes with a great HUD that includes colors PRESET to match popular skins such as Laqroki, Redgrave, and Belleza (HoneyBear promises to get Pulse in there soon) and a way to customize using RGB. You can save presets as well. Additionally, the shoes come with 10 nail colors and a resizing script (which I find I need to use always—the shoes are usually too large for my ankles and you see the fatty overlap unless they are resized—ewww). I have seen others using this sandal—it’s a kit a builder can buy. HoneyBear has made it hers with her unique hud.

Feeling Purple

I was feeling a little purple today. Perhaps it was the grape jelly on my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Maybe it was the blueberries I ate with them. Not sure, but I had to have purple.

Feeling Purple

I started with this lovely dress from Mimikri Kit. I have secretly been a fan of Mimikri’s for a while, ever since a few items in one of her satellite stores took me to her main store, which had only a few more pieces. Now she has a completely full two story boutique with imaginative and fashion forward pieces covering the walls. The print has purple and blue themes and a beautiful Asian floral print entwined with black lace. Spectacular.

Feeling Purple

Mimikri’s system pieces are exact and very well done. Though I show a dress without prims, I will attest to her great prim building abilities and her ingenuity in texturing and rearranging prims. She has been working hard on creating clothing and pushing her boundaries—you can see it as you cam from the top floor, with her older content, down to the main floor. Mimikri clearly isn’t satisfied throwing a new texture on the same old skirt. She’s pushing into new territory and learning new skills with each piece. And it looks like she’s having a lot of fun doing it.

Feeling Purple

I topped the dress with a flirty Dorothy Hamill cut from *booN. Leave it to boo Nakamura to take an old hair cut and make it new with choppy ends and a slight purple tinge.

Feeling Purple

I added AnaLee Balut’s jewelry. She does some amazing jewelry—very couture and very fun. I love how her beads float around the neck and wrist.

Shoes from Melanie Zhao and Lissa Maertens finish the look. This is a new foray for Lissa, who clearly contributed the textures while Melanie contributed the building skills. The texture was a gorgeous silky purple chinoiserie.

I did miss being able to use Melanie’s resizer script on these shoes. While they were cute, I did need to manually adjust them a bit, and I am getting spoiled from all these great shoe makers’ huds.

Sequined Sophistication

Sometimes when a lady goes out on the town, she needs to dress up a little and show off her success. For some ladies, that means a lot of bling, a lot of accessories. For me, it means a deadly sexy sheath–hand-sequined–and exotic stilettos.

Sophisticated Sequins

Squinternet Larnia seemed to know just what I needed. With her gorgeously embroidered system pieces, she made a dress that screams success and calls to me. Note how well the system pieces wrap around the avatar and the invisible transition from the top to the skirt. This is not “off the rack.” This was couture, elegant, elaborate, but not vulgar.

Sophisticated Sequins

I can’t emphasize enough how important a good system piece is to any outfit. All the prims in the world will not hide lack of skill or style. Squinternet shows both skill and style with this ensemble.

I included a pair of pumps I had purchased a time ago from SKG Shoes. I have already gone on about Saki Galiazzo’s work. The wicked but elegant shape of these shoes and the exotic but not overdone animal print complimented the ensemble.

Battle Ready

Bryce Randt and Eclipse Lykin of Eclipse make some of the toughest, most elaborate RP wear on the grid. They are also the nicest people you will ever meet. I had the pleasure of meeting Bryce and then his partner Eclipse when we were all doing RFL (which has personal significance for them as it does for many in SL). I had long admired their work without knowing the warm hearts behind the work.

Bryce and Eclipse have achieved a partnership that many of us would envy. They had known each other before entering Second Life, and Bryce followed Eclipse into this new world where they could open shop. Their work and vision is so entwined that they can not tell where one’s work ends and the other’s begins.

Battle Ready

“Realize your RP” is the tagline of their business, and it caught my attention. Their RP wear is so elaborately made, so complete with evocative details that it’s hard not to WANT to create a story about the person wearing it.

Battle Ready

I felt instantly tougher wearing it. Gone was the fussy woman with the legendary shoe collection. Present was the tough and beautiful warrior and conjurer. Scuffed boots from miles of travel, elaborate staff in hand, equipped with tools for conjuring and facing foes, I felt confident and ready.

Battle Ready

Note the details–the knife holstered on the back of a vest, the tooled leather belt complete with mystical hourglass and pockets containing herbs and other spells. I styled this piece with MissAllSunday’s Aerandir beautifully braided hair to make a complete look.

Battle Ready

And check out the back side. They sure know how to make a good butt, much less the gloves and leg satchel.

Battle Ready

Few things in SL can survive such close scrutiny. With their work, I can still get this close and gasp with wonder. The textures from the system pieces to the prims are immaculate and contain in them the stories of ages.

Nightlife with DJ Jamie

I am at SLCC! Woot! It’s as fun as I could hope it would be. I am looking forward to being on a few panels for the Fashion track and looking forward to hearing others speak.

The Ciel sims, though I rarely visit them, are near and dear to my heart. Owned by Christo Larsen, the sims are a home to a group of gentlemen that have created their own family across the many miles and oceans that separate them by living together on Ciel.

Last year I had the pleasure of spending time with three of them—Xavier, Blaze, and Gellan—at SLCC. This year I am so excited to know that Blaze, Gellan, and now Jamie will be there. I have met up with them and Bri and his partner Pookie, and it’s like we never parted company last year. It’s so easy and so fun to be with these friends. If you, dear reader, ever get the chance to meet SL friends, do it!

And with this, I announce that DJ Jamie Ondeko will be spinning LIVE at the Odd Ball, Friday, August 14—8 pm PDT, Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco, CA, USA. And I am gonna be there!!!!!

In anticipation of seeing Jamie, I visited him at Ciel while he was spinning a few days ago.

Nightlife with DJ Jamie

Christo let me rez a ball on Jamie’s booth. Jamie ignored me (not unusual :P). Jamie plays some excellent music. Check him out on the Ciel sims.

Nightlife with DJ Jamie

I have always loved this dress from *Punch Drunk*. Iris Seale tackled sequins—not the easiest thing to do. I always feel dressed up and glam, but not over the top.

Nightlife with DJ Jamie

I decided to continue the purple theme with hair from Deviant Kitties (with pixie dust ON), fabulous boots from my old pal, Storm Schmooz, and stockings from ‘nother pal, Grue Ling. (You guys never call anymore :( )

Nonna a Paris

Nonna Hedges is the doyenne of evening dresses in SL. When I first came to SL, a friend of mine took me to her shop and I gasped. Classical music played on the stream, rich woods and silks covered the surfaces, the soft scent of roses and vanilla wafted through the air. I felt like I had entered an exclusive boutique. On the gowns, fine handmade lace covered the bodices, silk with a subtle patina flowed across the gowns.

Nonna’s work has a style like no one else’s–a classical aesthetic rooted in a woman’s intense but banked sexuality. A Nonna woman doesn’t wear bright turquoise, she doesn’t have crunchy curly hair, she doesn’t speak loudly (though she is well-heard). She would never chew gum.

chocolate Nonna

It was with pleasure I received Nonna’s latest creation, perles et dentelle. Nonna has been focusing on Paris lately (as evidenced by her recent store remodel, which features a large version of her Eiffel Tower necklace draped over the walls of the store). Details is the name of her store, and for Nonna it’s all about the details, from the pearl necklace and belt to the barefoot prim shoes (which I don’t show here, but they come with the outfit).

chocolate Nonna

This piece was inspired by her dreams of Paris with it’s subtly pink/pearl lace (notice the ribbon detail finishing off the neckline and sleeves) and its cocoa satin skirt. Finishing off the skirt is a beautiful gradient prim kickpleat. Notice the crinkled rosettes at the shoulders, the pearled belt with the gold buckle, and the prim laces tied criss-crossed and tied in back..
