Golden Years

The 1920s in Berlin, especially, the late 20s, was a renaissance of art, design, and thought as the Weimer Republic tried a new manner of governing. Bauhaus came about at this time. Imagine studying with Paul Klee or Wassily Kandinsky. Or Mies Van Der Rohe. The liveliness of the cabarets of Berlin at this time must have been amazing too! In fact, you can visit happy hour at a cabaret The 1920s Berlin Project every day at 2 pm slt.

Golden Years

If you do that, you must be dressed appropriately (it’s a sim rule). This absolutely gorgeous dress and headband from Sonatta Morales will get you there and in a gentleman’s arms (if you aren’t happy doing the Charleston alone). With it’s beautiful texture and graceful prims (which were carefully made to have different flexi settings to indicate different materials and weight—how clever), this ‘20s dress will make you the life of the party.

Golden Years

To go with this beautiful dress I chose Hart Larsson’s beautiful July skin with a red lip. This is glam to the nth degree with its cat-eye lined eyes and glossy red lips. Granted, the liner is not very historical but I needed to match the boldness of the print in the dress (and when was SL EVER about being perfectly authentic?) Vintage pumps from Fallingwater Cellardoor complete the look—stilettos would look so wrong with this.

Astrofiction

Rezzable is holding a science-fiction based show and sale on their Greenies’ sim, featuring a number of notable designers.

Astrofiction

Tekelili Tantalus was asked to participate, and he was a brilliant choice for this show. With his otherworldly designs and incredible building skills, few will be able to surpass his fantastic ensembles. This one, one of a set of six colors, is featured at the show. In typical fashion, Tek has combined prim armor and boots with a seductive silks belt and beautifully rendered system pieces.

Astrofiction

The beauty of this outfit, however, is that the system pieces can be removed and you still have a great outfit, especially if you want to make your avatar show a little more skin…

Astrofiction

The skin I am showing, in this case, is one of a series of more fantastic skins from Mea Carnell. With it’s hand-drawn features, it is more illustrative rather than realistic, but it suits the graphic fantasy of Tek’s outfit. I accompany it with one of my favorite fun hair pieces from Helyanwe Vindaloo (fairy dust particles turned to off).

Sleek

I was bumbling around the grid shopping (as I am wont to do), looking for new things, checking out my list of places to check out, when I stumbled across a shop that was chock full of goodies at a great price. (You have to love a great price.) So I bought up the store.

Sleek

One of my goodies was this terrific catsuit. Clearly Aurora Vuissent has been working on her system pieces because the zipper runs straight through the top to the bottom with nary a seam or a wrinkle. The back is cut open (with clean edges.. I love clean edges) to a surprise peek-a-boo, making the whole silhouette ultra chic and stylish. Aurora has included a sculpty collar with a clever zipper tab and cuffs for the arms and legs. I can’t bear to tell the price because it looks a lot more expensive. (Let’s put it this way—nothing in her shop is over 300L and most are 25-50L. Every day is Friday there!)

Sleek

I styled it with this very mysterious bob from Lamb Bellic. When you want something more fashionable, a little different and well made, !lamb is the place to go. She has been getting a lot of traction from the 50L Fridays, and it’s well deserved. Her place is one of the few that are a must-hit.

Finally this beautiful skin from Minnu Palen. I chose this particular one because the eye shadow was so evocative. I had seen it done this way in photos of real life catwalks and love it on this pale skin with the very muted pink lip.

Duende

I am using perhaps a word that is too charged for the title of my blog in order to describe a mere dress, but it is the flavor of flamenco, the feeling of duende that is sought in making flamenco, that I am after in describing this dress.

Imagine the flamenco, a dance of barely restrained sensuality, every muscle of the dancer’s body used with deliberate intention, erect and focused, the clothing an extension of her body, the skirts lifted up and furled, the flower tight in her chignon, her feet pounding out a complex beat.

Duende

Nardya Rousselot gives us a flavor of this beautiful dance and music in her version of a flamenco dress. With it’s beautifully tiered prims flowing out in a train, the gorgeous flowers on black fabric and perfectly frilled bodice, this is a flamenco dress worthy of wearing for such a dance. I show it with shoes from Nardya, though a good flamenco dancer wouldn’t wear stilettos (they don’t tap).

Duende

I wear a hair from Alexainder Biedermann perfectly suited to this ensemble. With its removable and color-change flower, it would be suitable for most any woman looking to add a touch of passion to her ensemble.

Down to Earth

A lot of people think I am pretty down to earth. I am a Taurus—we are earth signs. We prefer the tangible over the esoteric, being close to the ground rather than flying high in the air.

Down to Earth

Perhaps that’s why you find me often wearing earthy colors. I found this sexy dress at Kungler’s yesterday and knew it was perfect for me—this is really my look. With the beautiful earth tones, the wrap construction, the great prim sash and sexy silhouette, the elegance of this dress spoke to me. If I am walking around SL, this is the kind of thing I want to wear to be “Harper.”

Down to Earth

Stumbelina Ophelia has come out with another one of her iconic hairs, this time the Dakota. First it was the Europa, then the Berlin, now the Dakota. Women across the grid will be rushing to get this hair and that’s because it has great textures and an amazing shape. I am not sure how long this one has been out, but I spotted it on another avatar and fell in love with it instantly.

Down to Earth

Finally, knee high boots from J’s. This is a classic look—knee high boots with a dress or skirt. These brilliant boots with their very real zippers up the sides and great blunted toes, are the perfect accompaniment to this dress.

Relief

Like many of us with computers and TVs, I am watching what is unfolding in Haiti with horror and unhappiness. We can’t help but see the suffering of other humans with discomfort. We all want to do something and are watching helplessly, and of course we want to act.

What makes it worse is Haiti is a country that has seemed, heretofore, not been able to benefit from relief in any substantial way. David Plotz said today on the Slate Political Gabfest podcast, “this is a country which has had so many problems and this is another problem on epic scale…[Y]ou are seeing a society that has been completely obliterated. What do you do with a country which has so few resources, natural resources, so little social capital, so little actual capital…? American aid to Haiti has really done nothing to help rebuild the country up until now. Will it help the country recover this time?” The disaster is SO devastating because the country was already near devastation. What can I do today to provide some small relief? Is sending money enough? And where would it be best served?

Rather than donate to a kiosk in SL where the Linden that is withdraw will be subject to several fees through Linden Lab and Paypal and will have a lengthy time span from getting from that kiosk to the recipients, I would encourage people to donate directly. I went to the Network For Good website and determined, based on the statements from the organizations they listed, that my donation will be better served by Médecins Sans Frontières than the American Red Cross. They have an existing infrastructure that will help Haitians very immediately. Below is my donation. I encourage any and all of my readers to match it.

Relief

That being said, today’s outfit has NOTHING to do with Haiti, relief or charity. It has to do with enjoying the artistry and creation so readily available to us in SL on an international scale. It feels almost crass to turn from such a weighty subject to something so frivolous, but I hope that in expressing joy over these creations, I can feel the gratitude I have for such a good life and the connections I can make across the globe in SL.

Relief

Chocolate Arashi shows us once again why sometimes it’s better to travel to Japan for fashion. With her funky prints and great prim building, chocolate gives us sweet and pretty fashions for the girly girl in ourselves. (She is equally as sweet–a genuinely lovely lady.) The collar on the dress is a piece of art as is the skirt, both cleverly using alpha texture issues to their advantage as the pieces seem to move and shimmer as the camera turns.

Relief

I love this ring from Cora Lu. In fact, I love ALL of Cora Lu’s rings. Cora has taken prims and textures and evoked the joy of going in my grandmother’s jewelry box to find costume jewelry that I can wear fashionably now. This ornate ring is beautifully made and textured and provides the drama I want (and none I don’t want).

Relief

Again, I finish with the best denouement, Bax Coen’s Prestige Boots. What makes these boots so darn great is their versatility—color changing, cuffed, sleek and elegant. I mean, look at those textures!

Sometimes you see a beautiful young woman, dressed cutely, rushing from one thing to another, carrying a large messenger bag. Makes you wonder: Where is she going? What is in the bag? Where did she get those boots?

Messenger

Well this chick has a chic jacket from a little place around on the Japan sim called Meriken. The taylor there, Yaszi Mornington, is expert at making clothes for men (and sometimes women) that are textured well, fashionable and versatile. The jacket includes a very well-done sculpty collar with brass buttons (and is available for men). The pants are from the same spot. Belt is something she found in the back of her closet made by Grue Ling, spray painted gold and threw on.

Messenger

The messenger bag is from Japan, made by onakagoo Waco for ArtMeter. It’s very cool, versatile, and contains… well, in this case, two energy bars, a bottle of water (warm and half drunk), some half-dessicated spearmint gum, a worn copy of Neruda’s 100 Love Sonnets, a CD with “mix from Bennie” scrawled on it in Sharpie, a shopping list, a bottle of ibuprofen (open), 23 200 mg ibuprofen tabs scattered all over the bottom, three ballpoint pens, a notebook, well worn and marked “Journal,” and Jonathan Lethem’s Chronic City.

Messenger

Her skin is from Mallory Cowen (young and fresh and beautiful, this one). It’s the new Tasha2 with deliciously creamy skin and pretty eye shadow.

The boots? Well, she’d tell you if you’d ask. These are made by Ju Weissnicht and are sold at several places. Several sizes come in the pack so they are sure to fit you. They are great for walking across the city.

I got an IM the other day from my friend Mitch Wagner, the host of Copper Robot, a weekly interview show in SL that goes out to the web and is later podcast. Mitch asked if I had ever read Jonathan Lethem. I thought he wanted to chat about books. I had read Jonathan Lethem before—Motherless Brooklyn a long time ago and then articles in Harper’s Magazine (the RL one).

Mitch told me that Copper Robot will be having Jonathan Lethem as its guest and would I like to meet Jonathan in world and show him a few things in SL. Well you know, I nearly fell out of my chair. Of course! What was my NEXT question? “OMG, Mitch, what will I wear?!?”

Book Signing

I opted to wear the safe bet—pretty, sexy, and some of the best fashion in SL—Zaara Kohime and Onyx LeShelle. I donned an older dress from Zaara that has stood the test of time with its beautiful textures and brilliant belt decoration.

Book Signing

I accessorized with Zaara jewelry, beautifully textured, matching the dress (of course). I wanted to have that soft jangle of bangles shifting and moving as I gesture and talk. (Now you get the secret of bangles ;))

Book Signing

Finally, sexy and artistic heels from Onxy LeShelle. I have shown these before but I can’t help myself. It all goes so well.

(And yes, I gave him a brief tour of SL. He was impressed and very gracious and easy going. A very nice man. I think you will love hearing him speak.)

Jacked In

Ooo! I just watched my first episode of Caprica (do not spoil it for me!) and now I am squirming with the pleasure of this great science fiction series ahead of me, especially since I just finished Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood.

There is a whacky discussion going on in my head right now, based on an article by James Fallows in this month’s Atlantic about How America Can Rise Again. It has to do with this notion of apocalypse or rather, how Americans face the current times and the future with a feeling that we are in decline.

I think a lot of the same malaise imbues SL, (and I am not talking about RP sims like City of Lost Angels or Midian) in the forums, the blogs, and the general chat. The Mentors are gone, the Homesteads are messed up, people are closing malls and businesses… yadda yadda yadda.

But Fallows has it right in his article, and I argue the same. “One look at the comforts and abundance of American life—even during a recession, even with all the people who are suffering or left out—can make it seem silly to ask about anything except the secrets of the country’s success,” he argues. “The typical American I see in an office building or shopping mall, stout or slim, gives off countless unconscious signs—hair, skin, teeth, height—of having grown up in a society of taken-for-granted sanitation, vaccination, ample protein, and overall public health.”

I can point to the same thing in SL: higher concurrencies, better stability, more beautiful and far reaching content than we have ever had before. Even the newbies look tons better (come on now—hardly anyone runs around with that freaky helmet hair anymore). SL is pretty damn good. Fallows’ final argument is that American history has a unique tradition of “cycles of despair followed by triumphant rebirths.” We are on the brink in this country, and I think SL is in line too. (And I apologize to all my readers from other countries—I would like to hear your thoughts too.)

This crazy opener leads into today’s look, a combo of high tech, future, and fantasy. Actually, it is all about being jacked in.

Jacked In

The content in SL is better than ever. Let’s agree on that. I show this amazing “kimono” from Selos Dae as evidence. From the amazingly sculpties, combining a fur with a full leg to the truly unique sleeves, upended and lined with fur, to the great streaming ties. It’s just a very funky and cool outfit.

Jacked In

I said this blog was all about the hair, however, and really it is (and not about the weird thoughts going on in my head). This amazing cyberhair made by lat Oh made my day. Not only is it shaped well, textured amazingly, and tremendously imaginative, but it is also scripted with a HUD so you can change color of the metal, the little round “lights” on the back, and the ends of the wicks AND you can control their glow.

Jacked In

My favorite part of the hair was the USB port on the earphone!! Oh imagine that, being able to jack right in to your computer. (It’s all coming clear now, isn’t it.. Caprica.. the future of the SL.. get it? OK, probably not, but trust me, it all has to do with this little USB port.)

I wear a futuristic skin from Mea Carnell who has a line of pretty groovy goth and futuristic women’s skins. And these little eyelashes from Keri Clip are my favorite because they have a little white dot on the bottom. Something about those dots is so charming.

Beach Animal

I am past the romance of a white Christmas and the frost in the air and the gentle quiet of snowflakes drifting down. Christmas is over, the frost has turned to a bitter cold and the snowflakes recently fell down in a huge wallop.

Beach Animal

Part of my SL is the fantasy aspect, and in today’s fantasy, I am dressed to the nines on a beach somewhere. In fact, in this particular fantasy, it’s sunset and I am about to go to a party at a beach house after a long day of romping in the sun and reading trash novels under an umbrella (with plenty of sunscreen). I am wearing a cute zebra-striped bikini and sarong from Dai Matova (that I picked up at a little stall on a Japanese sim).

Beach Animal

I threw a lot of jewelry on, some of it that I found at that same sim. The earrings and necklace are terrific creations from violett Ellils, and they echo the zebra thing going on. To push it over the top, I have bangles and long nails from kikunosuke Eel. I will caution that the nails are a little tricky—they are no mod (!!) and I ended up changing my hands to a size 25 to fit the size 30 nails. I am not quite sure why either would apply (no mod or having to be size 25), but it may explain why there may be a little misfit apparent.

Tuli Asturias’ sunkissed (of course) Bella compliments the look and now you get an eyeful of her terrific body work, especially the navel and the hands, which show more detail than most.

Beach Animal

Finally, wild and fun shoes from this years Shoe Fair—Onyx LeShelle’s Shantis in a special pattern, Snow Leopard. I made sure my toenails were painted a dangerous black to match my nails.
