The Cosmopolitan

The Cosmopolitan

My friend Cynthia came to visit this weekend. She is design architect for a global architecture/engineering firm. Her work has placed itself in locales such as New York, Phoenix, Germany and soon, India. Her office is filled with people from around the world—every continent except Antarctica is represented under her supervision. I have to say that I am damn proud of my childhood friend. She is still the same girl I grew up with but also a woman with a broad reach.

What has become natural to her and is natural to a lot of us in SL is a cosmopolitanism, a believe that we all share basic human values that unite us. (I stole this from Wikipedia: “Kwame Anthony Appiah suggests the possibility of a cosmopolitan community in which individuals from varying locations (physical, economic, etc.) enter relationships of mutual respect despite their differing beliefs (religious, political, etc.).” I love Appiah!)

The Cosmopolitan

I have dressed my cosmopolitan in a fashion that would reflect a woman who jumps from a call to India to dinner with her childhood friend. First, she wears all black as a neutral base. In this case, Azure Electricteeth makes it sophisticated with an interesting silhouette—an extended cap sleeve on top and a flared bottom for the skirt with pleats. She ties it up with a simple leather belt. (Now I do appreciate that my friend would never bare her midriff for work but this is SL, so suspend disbelief. I am more covered than many in SL!)

I accessorize with a pashmina textured with a traditional Afghani pattern from Trill Zapatero (with all proceeds going to women of Afghanistan), delicate beaded drop earrings from Abraxxa Anatine, a square ring from Hitomi Zimer (free!), and slouchy boots from Elikapeka Tiramisu. The boots are, I think, what make this outfit chic.

Finally I wear  thebodyco’s Orchid skin with its combo hand-drawn and photosourced textures. I purchased more makeups, and this gives a slightly smokier eye and a glossy subtle pink lip which matches the sophistication of the outfit. Finally, my chic short ‘do with its pretty light brown texture is a find from moca Loup.

The Cosmopolitan

“When two normal people meet, they not only share what all normal human beings share but a good deal more…. The cosmopolitan curiosity about other peoples doesn’t have to begin by seeking in each encounter those traits all humans share. In some encounters, what we start with is some small thing that two particular people share…. Once we have found enough to share, we will be able to discover the things we do not share or do not share yet. That’s one of the payoffs of cosmopolitan curiosity: we can learn from one another or we can simply be intrigued by alternative ways of thinking, feeling and being.”

~ K.Anthony Appiah, speaking about “Ethics in a World of Strangers” in 2008
