Alt Country

Alt Country

If I go around telling people I like listening to country music, they look askance. It’s like they think I am watching “Hee Haw.” Or they expect I am listening to old folk tunes on NRP (which is one of those things that seems good for you but is painfully tedious, like eating grape nuts). I am not a tea party member; I do NOT drive a pick up truck; I live in an urban area; I am a Yankee, not a Dixie; my neck is not red. Alt country is more like… really good music that might have some country influences… or blues… or rock… so yeah, I listen to country.

Alt Country

This look seemed appropriate for alt country. I am mixing some ethnic pieces with some country pieces. Start with this cute boho tunic from Anyusha Lilienthal, which is not a typical farm girl’s top but perfect for an alt country boho girl. Pair it with denim shorts from Magen Jigsaw and some thermal stockings from Nena Janus, and this funky look matches the eclectic nature of alt country. A pair of cowgirl boots from Emma Gilmour are no brainers.

Alt Country

Then we have a smooth long haired look from Queue Marlowe in a delicious light brown shade with highlights under a terrific cowgirl hat from Jamie Holmer. Makes sense, no? Especially when worn with this lovely skin from moon Meiyo.

Finally my necklace hails from the land of Afghanistan and is one of the selections at the Afghanistan Museum shop and made by Trill Zapatero. Let me note that these are NOT found in her shop, BoHo HoBo, but in the museum store itself. She has spent a considerable amount of time studying the styles and motifs of Afghani women’s jewelry to make these, and all proceeds benefit Afghani women.

Alt Country

I wish I knew how to quit you….

Into the Dark Sky

Into The Dark Sky

“She says nothing at all, but simply stares upward into the dark sky and watches, with sad eyes, the slow dance of the infinite stars.” ― Neil Gaiman, Stardust

Into The Dark Sky

My entry for today is about the quiet beautiful woman you see at the party, the one with the palest skin, the interesting eyes, and the shy demeanor. She doesn’t speak, but her glamour makes everyone stand up a bit. Perhaps it is her little black dress from Morea Ruby, the young designer and daughter of Elisea Carter. With its lace panel interjected into a simple strapless sheath, it is an elegant outfit for a clearly elegant woman. Note the pleated panels on the bottom (which move perfectly—Morea has cleverly made them from four pieces attached to the legs and torso so they move as a well tailored shirt would). Regard her daringly studded red pumps from Nardya Rousselot. With their distinctive pink soles and bright red leather, these are just enough noise for an understated woman to make.

Into The Dark Sky

Her pale translucent makeup is courtesy of Sissy Pessoa, who has released a seasonally fashioned set of skins for vampires, witches, and otherwomen. Perhaps our guest is a vampire? Her gaze (through Ikon Innovia eyes) is focused and steady, her lips are lusciously red. Her hair is a well managed coif of almost-white blonde hair, shaped and styled by Sabina Gully (from a blonde set that includes a HUD for changing different portions of the hair).

The Girl Can’t Help It

The Girl Can't Help It

If she walks by, the men folks get engrossed.
If she winks an eye, the bread slice turn to toast,
If she got a lot of what they call the most,
The girl can’t help it, she was born to please
And if she’s got a figure made to squeeze
Won’t you kindly be aware, the girl can’t help it.

~ “The Girl Can’t Help It” by Little Richard

The Girl Can't Help It

I assist in the MENstuff and WOMENstuff groups with Ivy Maverick, the owner. I have to say, Ivy is a flirt extraordinaire—she is fun, sexy, sweet and silly. She walks into chat and the whole “room” brightens. So I gotta say, the girl can’t help it. She makes bread turn to toast.

I wear this look in honor of Ivy—sexy, sensuous and seriously sinful, Camille Yosuke’s newest offering at Insolence is, as usual, some of the best lingerie in SL. Camille is so careful about her edges, her textures, etc. She pays attention to all the details (notice the silk stockings being pulled up) and her use of lace and color is spectacular. When you wear Insolence, you feel like you are wearing Carine Gilson—the finest lace, the softest silks—all handcrafted.

The Girl Can't Help It

Fhara Ricelli has come out with a great set of skins recently. Some that I demo’d seem to lack body definition, but this skin, offered at the Dressing Room, has all the details you would want in a sexy skin. The make up is absolutely ideal for this look with the cats eyes and the subtle lip. My shape is one I made for Maverick Designs, which Ivy is selling on my behalf. If you want a lot of goodness, top and bottom, this is the shape for you. This is no shrinking violet.

Finally, my hair is a new one from Thora Charron and causing a big noise on the grid because it truly is so sexy. She has faithfully recreated the best of Angelina Jolie’s styles with an extension that goes over the shoulder. Sometimes extensions don’t work well—you can see the end or it sits on the shoulder like a raccoon’s tail. This one is very well engineered so it works seamlessly with the main hair and hangs down the back.

Delicious autumn!  My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.  ~George Eliot

My favorite season of the year is here—autumn. The weather where I am can be wonderful in fall (and it has been—warm and sunny). The leaves turn and remain on the trees for a fair amount of time so we can bask in the magnificence of summer’s final glory. I will say I had to stop the other day and just admire the trees lining my street in a canopy of glorious sunlight and color with leaves lazily drifting down. Yesterday a walk in a nature preserve yielded the bright spicy smell of fall—a piquant aroma of bark and leaves, like ginger.

The colors in Geryn Sloane’s newest dress remind me of fall. With its pebbled top texture and batik skirt, the yellows and oranges and browns in the dress are ideal for a fall day. She has taken a risk here mixing two prints but it works because one is proportionally smaller than the other. I have received lots of compliments about this dress—it’s sophisticated in its use of texture and joyful with its flexis.

My skin is one of Gala Phoenix’s new fall skins. These all have warm makeup tones and a less detailed “look,” which befits the sort of golden light and haziness of autumn light. My hair is Elikapeka Tiramisu’s pretty ponytail for Collabor88.

Finally, this exquisitely detailed jewelry is AvaGardner Kungler’s offering for Modavia, now available in her store in several color sets. The beads and cords in the necklace are exquisitely textured with highlights and shadows that make the pieces stand out. And somehow it all matches the dress perfectly.

Summer is already better, but the best is autumn. It is mature, reasonable and serious, it glows moderately and not frivolously… It cools down, clears up, makes you reasonable… ~ Valentin

Act on Impulse

Act on Impulse

I chose the title of a new song by We Were Promised Jetpacks to explain my look. It was impulse that got me to throw on this ensemble.

Act on Impulse

The whole thing reminds me of the mish mosh outfits I would put together in graduate school, thinking I was pretty chic. Chances are I was probably pretty mish moshy but I had the youth to pull it off. I start with a great little suit jacket from Marcantonio Beaumont with nicely sculpted shoulders, cuffs, and skirt. The shape of this jacket is flattering and girlish and very well done with little cuffs that have a polka dot lining. (I wore old man suits from the Goodwill all the time.) Underneath is a girlish cardigan from Emma Gilmour, well rendered and soft and comfy.

My skirt is a darling sculpted skirt from Trill Zapatero made from men’s neckties. Now, I confess to an affection for neck ties because they make men look so handsome and dressed up,but when they are old and wide as these are, they should be repurposed to make a skirt (or vest, as I once made in RL). My scarf, from Nagaru Kawashima, and knee socks, from Saeya Nyanda, were recolored (dyed with Rit in the apartment washing machines). Shoes are adorable t-straps from Cerberus Noel.

Act on Impulse

My casually clipped up curly do is a new one from Queue Marlowe, who has made it her mission to spread joyous curliness around the grid. This is a new texture from her, wrought from hours of labor. My skin is one of Gala Phoenix’s glowing luminescent skins. I accessorized with chic but cheap color changing glasses from Guu Nishi and my favoritist brown eyes on the grid from Ikon Innovia.

I made my pal Barely Texan get Codebastard Redgrave’s Filter Cam today, and I insisted he do my blog photos for me because he was having way too much fun playing with it. So photos courtesy of him and Codebastard.

That being said I am wearing a sort of eclectic outfit to match the idea of playtime. Agnes Finney released this lovely dress for autumn, a bright yellow beauty that would be very lovely dressed up for dancing or just being beautiful. With a gorgeous shimmering texture and lovely stylized roses at the shoulder, this dress is cheerful and elegant.

I made the dress funky by adding boots and a hat. The boots are a pair I got a few months ago from naonao2 ellis. I wanted a sort of younger more eclectic look and these served the purpose.

My skin is Hart Larsson’s Gaia skin, his beautiful hand-drawn offering that makes a woman look like a woman. There is a lot to be said for Hart’s artistry and vision. His woman is classically beautiful and sexy but she can still enjoy a little play time. My hair includes a groovy color change hat and streak from Ivanka Akina, which is a beautiful mess of waves topped by a funky plaid hat with little pins.

Do I Dare?

Do I Dare?

After doing a sweet little girl, do I dare to show a look on the other extreme? Yep, you betcha!

Do I Dare?

This look was inspired by several pieces I had recently received plus a challenge from a friend to stretch myself. So I stretched vinyl.. and a sort of translucent snakeskin.. over my shape. This provocative ensemble (which comes with much more than you see here) comes courtesy of Jackie Graves, the mother of latex in SL. With its crisp rendering and great lines (even though its distorted on my curvy shape), this is a fantasy ensemble for the most daring RPers.

I dress it up with a tattoo from Pandora Igaly snaking down my spine and lighted platform boots from OnO Zinner, who makes fantasy boots for women who want to push past the boundaries of RL. My hair is a high ponytail from Mirja Mills with a studded holder.

Do I Dare?

My skin, underneath all this, is Hart Larsson’s newest. Somehow when his skin shows up, I end up putting on something sexy. I think it’s because it’s so detailed and sexy itself. Consider the eyebrows, which are beautifully drawn and rendered. Or the *cough* feminine features, which are curvy and luscious. I will admit I overlaid eyeliner and red red lipstick from monica Outlander on this look, just to charge it up a bit.

The story is really my accessories. I piled on pieces from Matchbook Monday, including a collar and multiple piercings. I also have, yes, nipple covers. I prefer to think of them as a sort of weapon to keep people from getting too close. The coolest piece is the arm piece, which has an animation inside making my arm more robotic than real. All the pieces are scripted for metal change, and the metal textures actually change—it is not simply color change or sheen change.

Do I Dare?

Dang, I make one heck of a cyber vixen.

The Cosmopolitan

The Cosmopolitan

My friend Cynthia came to visit this weekend. She is design architect for a global architecture/engineering firm. Her work has placed itself in locales such as New York, Phoenix, Germany and soon, India. Her office is filled with people from around the world—every continent except Antarctica is represented under her supervision. I have to say that I am damn proud of my childhood friend. She is still the same girl I grew up with but also a woman with a broad reach.

What has become natural to her and is natural to a lot of us in SL is a cosmopolitanism, a believe that we all share basic human values that unite us. (I stole this from Wikipedia: “Kwame Anthony Appiah suggests the possibility of a cosmopolitan community in which individuals from varying locations (physical, economic, etc.) enter relationships of mutual respect despite their differing beliefs (religious, political, etc.).” I love Appiah!)

The Cosmopolitan

I have dressed my cosmopolitan in a fashion that would reflect a woman who jumps from a call to India to dinner with her childhood friend. First, she wears all black as a neutral base. In this case, Azure Electricteeth makes it sophisticated with an interesting silhouette—an extended cap sleeve on top and a flared bottom for the skirt with pleats. She ties it up with a simple leather belt. (Now I do appreciate that my friend would never bare her midriff for work but this is SL, so suspend disbelief. I am more covered than many in SL!)

I accessorize with a pashmina textured with a traditional Afghani pattern from Trill Zapatero (with all proceeds going to women of Afghanistan), delicate beaded drop earrings from Abraxxa Anatine, a square ring from Hitomi Zimer (free!), and slouchy boots from Elikapeka Tiramisu. The boots are, I think, what make this outfit chic.

The Cosmopolitan

Finally I wear  thebodyco’s Orchid skin with its combo hand-drawn and photosourced textures. I purchased more makeups, and this gives a slightly smokier eye and a glossy subtle pink lip which matches the sophistication of the outfit. Finally, my chic short ‘do with its pretty light brown texture is a find from moca Loup.

The Cosmopolitan

“When two normal people meet, they not only share what all normal human beings share but a good deal more…. The cosmopolitan curiosity about other peoples doesn’t have to begin by seeking in each encounter those traits all humans share. In some encounters, what we start with is some small thing that two particular people share…. Once we have found enough to share, we will be able to discover the things we do not share or do not share yet. That’s one of the payoffs of cosmopolitan curiosity: we can learn from one another or we can simply be intrigued by alternative ways of thinking, feeling and being.”

Finding My Inner Child

Finding My Inner Child

When I got to SL, the first thing that really disturbed me was the presence of child avatars, for various reasons. First of all, SL can be a pretty benign space but there ARE adult areas and the thought of child avatars in such areas or in such circumstances made me feel very uncomfortable (even if they are played by adults).

Then there was that twee baby talk. “I fought you were going to get me that pway toy, Daddy.. Imma gonna cwy wifout it!” Ugh! I came to SL to be an adult and to get away from children (and real children don’t talk like that anyway)!

Finding My Inner Child

Then I met Marianne McCann in real life at SLCC and learned what a nice gentle person she is and realized that there are reasons people might choose to be children here that have the same sort of cross-personing reason that say, some of my friends who are RL men are women here or RL women friends are men here. It’s just a more comfortable way to be. (That still doesn’t excuse that horrid baby talk and Marianne never speaks like that, blessedly.)

A friend has a child alt and she convinced me to try being a child myself. I was resistant at first, but I wanted to explore another avatar for my blog as I have done in the past. She took me shopping, and I filled in my child persona pretty quickly and happily. She made me realize that dressing up my little girl was as fun as dressing up my big girl and that sometimes being a child allows one to … be a child. You can play games, dress up in silly combos, act goofy with your friends and not worry about being sexy or dignified or responsible (for bills, not behavior). And people give you a wide berth.

Finding My Inner Child

So allow me to introduce you to my inner child, Harper. Harper is a kind of bossy, spoiled little 4 year-old. Bossy in that she tells everyone on her sim what to do; spoiled in that she has a very full inventory and lots of pretty dresses, like this one from Rory Larnia. With its big pastel polka dots, lacey hem, empire waistline and little bows at the shoulders, it’s the ideal little girl dress—fun, pretty, and cheerful. My shoes are available at the sale at 4.44.4444 and I let out a little “squee” when I saw them.

Another reason I wanted to do a child avatar is because I found this totally awesome store of children’s jewelry. It’s kind of a high-end store, and might be for slightly older girls, but there were some pretty things I couldn’t do without. This is the kind of store for little girls with rich parents who give them things because they can. The store itself has a very comfy but chic interior and the jewelry as it’s displayed is very upscale. This is not a store for little orphan Annies.

Finding My Inner Child

Finally, I am wearing a shape from Stephberry Delling’s new shop. She has shapes for both women and girls, and when I undertook this little project, I was a little intimidated by having to make a little girl shape. Stephberry fixed that for me. I am wearing a freckled skin from Gala Phoenix because Stephberry recommended it in her style card. My only beef about having done this is I chose a skin with heavy eye makeup but she just looks like she has nice eyelashes, as so many little girls do. My hair is from BlueStarRUI Villota, who has a great selections of like hair that would suit any little girl. The bows are color change!

Morning Glory

Morning Glory

Somehow I have gotten my sleep schedule flipped. I used to be a night owl but now I am a morning glory. Instead of staying up til 3 I am waking up at 3 or 4 and then logging on to get my blog done. It’s got everyone around me, used to my late night hours, all topsy turvy, but I am finding I am enjoying the morning hours.

Morning Glory

I grab myself breakfast, some coffee, and sit down to read or watch a little TV and knit. Or I do housework. Or I log on to SL. It’s enjoyable in the early morning hours—some friends are straggling out from late nights or logging on for lunch or wrapping it up in their evening. The other day I did the whole Choice card stamp thing, I sorted some inventory, and rezzed a new house. And I have been able to sort through the sales notices.

Morning Glory

One that caught my eye this morning is that Truth District is having an event where designers are setting out exclusive items at 50% off for group members from Oct. 8-Oct. . Join the group TODAY because they will charge once the sale starts. I admit that I don’t often care to talk about sales or hunts, but I really like the folks at Truth District—great content throughout the sim and great management.

One of the goodies at half off is this cute little pajama set from Drinkenstein Sorbet. It includes the socks, which are much needed in the cooler fall weather. Ravyn Hynes is offering the sofa you see me lounging on for 50% as well. With something like 52 poses in it for men, women, friends, cuddling, etc, and its beautiful textures, I could lounge around in this outfit on this sofa all day, frankly. But I won’t…

Morning Glory

Cuz there are other outfits for sale at Truth District as well. First there is this darling outfit from Anessa Stine. She has seamlessly combined sculpty to system piece to create this cute top over leggings, which is very au courant and very attractive. LeeZu Baxter is also offering an item, this plum halter top with another seamlessly joined sculpty.

Morning Glory

Also on sale are some incredible shoes. I show Nardya Rousselot’s sandals on the left. Nardya has some of the best toes in SL, in my opinion, with a very user-friendly matching hud. She has a number of pieces against the back wall that will be 50% for this sale, so get over there! Gospel Voom is providing these fashionable purple bootie sandals as his sale item. Gospel is one of the leaders in creating great sculpty content in SL.

My skin? Gala Phoenix, who has a place at the Truth District and just came out with a new skin set as I was completing this blog—argh! And she IS offering an exclusive 50% skin which I have not even looked at but I am sure is magnificent.

My hair? From Truth Hawks, of course—one of his newest. Wander over to his store after you have sated yourself on the deals and get a pretty new hair to top it all off ;)

Morning Glory

The punchline: Truth District, Fall Event, 50% off exclusive content at most stores, October 8 to October 10. Join the group TODAY and then get there quickly!
