Who Were You, Miss Blue?

Miss Blue

Miss Blue was the dark-eyed girl who lived upstairs in my apartment building when I was first working and living in the city. She always looked as if she lived in some other age—a combination of Victorian and Gothic and grandma—very romantic mixed with a touch of girlish and frump, which only looked good because she was so lithe and pale. She always smelled of lilacs or roses and seemed like a strange walking quiet doll.

Miss Blue

She was peculiar. My roommate pointed out that you never EVER saw her eat or take out her garbage or wear sweatpants or swear. We never bumped into her in the laundry room or saw her at the local grocery store or saw her in the elevator with some date who had stayed overnight, descending in shame. We invited her to a cocktail party once. She didn’t eat a single hors d’oeuvres—just stood in a corner and sipped gin and tonics and fumbled with her pocketbook, avoiding the glances of the men in the room. We had no idea where she was from or what she did for her work—she simply left the building every day at 10, disappearing into the city, and returned, looking just the same, at 6.

Her attire was always exact and lovely in its own way—clearly not what anyone else wore. Here she wears a lace top with shoulder pads and lace cuffs, beautifully done, and repurposed from a whole dress by Lolita Dailey. Her flirty skirt is a lovely piece from Anouk Spot and shoes are old classics from Onyx LeShelle. Antique jewelry completes her look from Dita Tran.

No one we knew had been inside her apartment but we imagined it crammed full of antiques and tapestries and scarves covering all the lamps. My roommate suggested she probably collected something kooky, like porcelain dolls or that weird string art from the 70s. My roommate’s boyfriend jokingly suggested dead bodies. I imagined she was more like Emily Dickenson, writing poems in lined journals and drinking oolong tea.

She always wore her hair long and dramatically swooped in buns, sometimes tinting its deep darkness with blue, like this from Bubbles Clawtooth. And she was so pale pale and almost frail, like she never saw the light of day. She was freckled and flushed, innocent and odd. Her looks were unique, like this skin from Rocketta Haven, hand-drawn, queerly colored, delicate and expressive.

One April someone new was moving into her apartment—someone with all the same futons and Ikea furniture and mismatched dishware and overfull laundry baskets we had. We had no idea she had left—we had seen no movers. My roommate mused, “Who were you, Miss Blue?”
