What is the What

What is the What

“We are unusual and tragic and alive.” ~ Dave Eggers

What is the What

Today is the birthday of Dave Eggers. While he was a college student, both of his parents died suddenly and quickly of cancer, leaving behind Dave and three siblings. His two older siblings were unable to care for his brother, so Dave, at age 21, took on the responsibility of raising his 8 year-old brother. They moved to Berkeley from Chicago, and Dave wrote a book about those years called “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.” It *was* pretty genius and became a finalist for the Pulitzer prize in nonfiction. He subsequently wrote books about disenfranchised people—an immigrant from Sudan (“What is the What”) and a Syrian-American affected by Hurricane Katrina (“Zeitoun”). He started his own publishing company, McSweeney’s, and co-founded one of my favorite non-profit enterprises, 826 National, which helps students in grade and high school with creative and expository writing (and critical thinking). Every year a group of those students in San Francisco put out the book, “The Best Non-Required Reading.”

I admire him most for his zest for life, his fearless embrace of it and service to others—children, immigrants, and his community. He turns 43 today. Happy Birthday!

Completely unrelated, I give you today’s look, an ensemble courtesy of OneBadPixel, the singular embodiment of creators Sachi Vixen and Siddean Munro. With the sexy and fashionable DNA of two such mothers, one would expect something great, and I get it! First a belted sweater over white top with incredible shape, fit and textures and then some ridiculously bootylicious rolled-cuff denim shorts.

What is the What

I wore the shorts because I needed to show you these fabulous boots from Driftwood Miles. Made of unrigged mesh, they are a boot-lover’s dream. They come with a resizer (yep, unrigged) and come in many different dual colors. Have to love a pair of boots when spring rolls around the ground gets muddy.

What is the What

The real reason I am dancing for joy is the upcoming Skin Fair, hosted by Voshie Paine and Kira Paderborn. I have seen the sims and they are built for shopping with each designer providing a NEW and as-of-yet unreleased product. Today I show you Tuli Asturias’ new skin which will be released in sets of “Elementary” and “Sultry.” This sparkly eyed skin is from the Sultry pack.

I also feature here Ikon Innovia’s newest eyes, these in gorgeous silver. I have been showing a pair he set out as a sneak peek not too long ago, but now he has finished the entire set. All of them are absolutely gorgeous, a few steps above his original eyes (if you can believe such a thing can exist) with monochromatic eyes and multi-toned both available. It’s well known I am an entrenched Ikon girl and you can see why.
