Hema

Hema

“The key to your happiness is to own your slippers, own who you are, own how you look, own your family, own the talents you have, and own the ones you don’t. If you keep saying your slippers aren’t yours, then you’ll die searching, you’ll die bitter, always feeling you were promised more. Not only our actions, but also our omissions, become our destiny.” ~ Abraham Verghese in Cutting for Stone

Hema

I have been mostly absent from SL the past week because I have been absolutely enraptured by a novel I have been reading by Abraham Verghese called “Cutting for Stone.” The author, a professor and surgeon at Stanford, interrupted his career about the same time I was in grad school to go to the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, and good thing he did, because the novel is magnificent. Narrated by Marion Praise Stone, a twin born with his brother in a hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, it traces his life through the years—a rather dramatic life in a third world hospital. His adoptive mother, Hema, is an ob/gyn who, with his twin brother Shiva, create a scholarship about fistulas. (The book is stuffed with medical stories, information, and details—it’s amazing). Hema is, as you would expect, a wonderful mother, and it’s after her I name this entry.

I found this beautiful set of top and leggings at the Marquis Market, made by uklea Resident using template mesh pieces. I love how she has combined a bright and royal purple with gold and turquoise for this stunning display of color and texture. Also clever, she has used an East Asian silhouette (the cheongsam) with a more West Asian motif (kind of Indian). I decided to go the Indian route with a nose piercing, bindi, bangles and slippers from Zaara Kohime.

Hema

Tricky Boucher has just released the full Leila skin and I opted for the deepest skin tone to make this look. The eyes, while not specifically kohl-lined, are smoky and darkly shaded and the lips are a succulent though muted red. Mirja Mills’ gorgeous full ponytail completes the look, making my Hema as beautiful as the one Ghosh fell in love with in the novel.

Hema

…As she bent over the child she realized that the tragedy of death had to do entirely with what was left unfulfilled. She was ashamed that such a simple insight should have eluded her all these years. Make something beautiful of your life. ~ The character Hema in Cutting for Stone

Then We Were New

Then We Were New

We can do what we want,
We can live as we choose.
You see there’s no guarantee,
We got nothing to lose.

~ “New” by Paul McCartney

Then We Were New

Nothing like a cheerful pop love song from Paul McCartney to introduce this look, which is pure pop. (And watch that video—damn he looks good for a guy who is 71 years old!) Start with a cute dress from Kim Lysette—a flowered white print on black, easy and loose, and pile on a cardigan from Marie Lauridsen. Then garter stockings (with runs, of course) from Nikkiiirene and Moni Schulze’s darling color change platform boots with leg warmers (a *steal* at  the Marquis Market—50L and worth so much more). Ariadna Garrigus’ fashionable shades, also complete with a great color change hud for lenses and frame, complete the look with a whimsical dash of color.

Then We Were New

Tricky Boucher offers a set of darling skins at the Liaison Collaborative, including this fresh look with subtly cat-lined eyes. With a variety of brow colors available, it makes it easy to choose any one of the skins for wear with any hair. Kavar Cleanslate is offering this adorable ‘do with twisty high ponytails and his amazing color changing hud at the Attic for an equally amazing price. I tried on about 50 different variations in color and streaks before settling for this more tame but rich chocolate. Mr. Diesel has poses as a group gift at his store, some of which I show here. If you like packing your inventory with his poses, this is the time to pick them up!

Then We Were New

And made my life a song

Her Cruel Arts

Cruel Arts

Here thou art painted in the dress
Of an inhuman murderess;
Examining upon our hearts
Thy fertile shop of cruel arts:
Engines more keen than ever yet
Adorned tyrant’s cabinet,
Of which the most tormenting are
Black eyes, red lips, and curled hair.

~ Andrew Marvell, The Gallery

Cruel Arts

Our mistress of the cruel arts of beauty seduces with her pale skin and deep red lips, dark eyes and curled hair. Start with the sexy burlesque outfit Synjari Myriam has made for Genre. Part of the Western theme of the event, the burlesque outfit features mesh top and bustle with a flexi skirt and lovely texturing and it’s offered at a terrific price (as is everything at Genre). Check out the lacing on the back!

Cruel Arts

My skin is one of Rocketta Haven’s surreal skins for the Designers United event going on right now, themed appropriately, “Surrealism.” While I don’t find surrealism a really sellable topic (how many times can you say “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” and wear it like you mean it?), some of the items push past the theme and offer beauty or utility. Certainly Rocketta’s ethereal set of skins got me to scamper over and with the alluring lips and gorgeous freckles on a pale gray façade, this is a beautiful alternative to the usual.

Valencia Southard teamed up with Nyunyu Kimono to offer a posing stool that includes some fabulous poses as well. While the stool seems awfully short for any avatar (you can’t see the legs amidst my skirt—I am hovering in the air), the poses are beguiling. (I did make myself 5’ tall in SL and the stool was still too short for me, incidentally.) I am not sure how the stool is surrealist but it’s certainly lovely.

My hair is Queue Marlowe’s other offering this week, a blunt banged curly ‘do with fullness and body. With a great color change hud, I was able to find this rich red color in a snap. Queue, Queue, how I love you!

Powers of Ten

The Power of Ten

“The details are not the details. They make the design.” ~ Charles Eames

The Power of Ten

What better quote to start with than one from Charles Eames, the architect and male half of the team of Charles and Ray Eames (she being a painter and the female half). As a married couple and team, they made significant contributions to modern architecture and furniture. The title of the post is the title of two documentaries they made about the scale of the universe based on the power of ten and “the effect of adding another zero.” The Eames were interested in design using natural materials, harmony, the beauty of the every day object, and the use of modern techniques and prefabrication to mass produce good design. Their motto was “Create the best for the most for the least.”

The Power of Ten

The Power of Ten

The Raintree House by Painter Meriman is a lovely study of the architectural designs of the Eames including some Eames chairs. A friend rezzed a copy for me so I could take these photos.

The Power of Ten

If you’re a fan of architecture, it’s great to find a house like this. And Painter understands the devil is in the details, and he has attended to them with great care, from the proportions of the builds to the textures to even the accessories. It’s beautiful work and a modernist’s dream.

The Power of Ten

And what self-respecting fashionista wouldn’t want to live and luxuriate in such a space? I donned a stylish dress from SamanthaSJones, wore my sexiest heels from Nuria Augapfel and Claire Messenger, and enjoyed the feeling that SL often affords us—that of living in a beautiful space.

The Power of Ten

Tricky Boucher brings his beauty to the Liaison Collaborative with another set of Leila skins (to compliment those at Collabor88). Get both sets with their enigmatic eyes and luscious lips and have the collection. Mina Nakamura has re-released the Ineke hair she unveiled at Hair Fair with an ombre hud so you can have a little color variation in your hair and life.

Something’s Gotta Give

Something's Gotta Give

When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet just as sure as you live

Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give

~ “Something’s Gotta Give” by Frank Sinatra

Something's Gotta Give

There’s something about a classic dress and shoes with pearls that makes a girl a knockout. Start with this gorgeous dress that Shai Delacroix is offering at the Liaison Collaborative. She has fashioned a sexy gathered dress with a side sash and narrow belt in a figure-flattering pencil skirt design. She offers with it this terrific HUD for changing the colors and features across four different areas plus the option to simply turn the sash off.

Something's Gotta Give

I love the little slit in back and loved pairing it up with strands of pearls from Maxi Gossamer and Gospel Voom’s sexy and classic slingbacks with their little peeptoe.

Something's Gotta Give

This entry is, of course, named after Marilyn Monroe’s last film, ironically titled. Queue Marlowe took inspiration from Marilyn with this wavy, sexy ‘do and it’s tumble of curls framing the face. And what a beautiful face it is—one of Aida Ewing’s newest skins for the grand re-opening of Glam Affair. All the creators—Aida, Marilyn, and Amberlee—have been working hard to make new content to make this re-opening spectacular and Aida has outdone herself with the gorgeous skins she is offering.

Something's Gotta Give

So, en garde, who knows what the fates might have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I’ll try hard ignorin’ those lips that I adore
But how long can anyone try?

Purple Rain

Purple Rain

I never meant to cause you any sorrow.
I never meant to cause you any pain.
I only wanted to one time see you laughing.
I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain.

~ “Purple Rain” by Prince

Purple Rain

I felt a little melancholy today so I put together this lovely purple look to boost my look and then someone reminded me of that beautiful wistful song by Prince, Purple Rain. Monica Outlander has recently come out with a new gown set which is simple to wear (just two system pieces and two prim parts) but oh-so-lovely. Monica has not given up on the beauty of flexi prims for a full romantic gown, especially since she can do system pieces so well.

Purple Rain

I get the privilege of sharing with you a new hair designer—Pollen. She has just started out on Marketplace, and she already shows promise. Completely mesh hair,  this ‘do includes a HUD for changing the tones of the hair and the flowers in the hair. And this piece comes with a free necklace, which matches the flowers in the hair. The side bun is romantic, especially with the optional flowers.

pollen hud

Aida Ewing’s newest skin, Angelica, is the perfect look for this almost ethereal amethyst ensemble. With the lightest of brows for the blonde skin, a gorgeous blush and subtle, glossed lips, this new set will be a welcome addition for Glam Affair lovers and skin wearers around the grid.

Purple Rain

I only wanted to see you underneath the purple rain.

The Last Rose of Summer

The Last Rose of Summer

T’is the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone.
~ Thomas Moore

The Last Rose of Summer

The days have suddenly gotten brisk and leaves are already falling off the trees! What happened to my lovely summer? I have this lovely sheer dress from Ivy Burner, which she is offering at Stalkerazzi, and while I loved putting it on with its light and sheer material and beautiful details, I was freezing! I got a shrug from Vixtris to fit on my shoulders, which took some of the chill away, and a pair of legwarmers from Morphine Janick, who is hosting the Season’s Story, which warmed me up while I kept my sweet summery look going.

The Last Rose of Summer

A fresh skin from PeachieMuah is the pink of summer in this look with soft lips, a sweet blush and deeply lined eyes. Translucent baby blues from Isabella Requiem (I have been liking her eyes a lot lately), bring summer skies to the look. A new style from Truth Hawks, with lovely waves and layered bangs, evokes the easy carefree days of summer.

Postmodern Jukebox

Postmodern Jukebox

“My goal with Postmodern Jukebox is to get my audience to think of songs not as rigid, ephemeral objects, but like malleable globs of silly putty. Songs can be twisted, shaped, and altered without losing their identities….” ~ Scott Bradlee from the Postmodern Jukebox website

Postmodern Jukebox

One of my favorite discoveries on YouTube recently has been Postmodern Jukebox. A gentleman named Scott Bradlee rearranges popular pop tunes in different genres. For example, a doo wop version of Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” or a vintage 1940s version of Selena Gomez’ “Come and Get It.” He has some brilliant fellow musicians perform with him—his lead singer is great. Hearing the raunchy lyrics sung in these forms is hilarious as well.

This outfit has a tinge of the postmodern to it. Start with this sheer top from Julliette Westerburg, which she is offering at Collabor88. The brilliance of the top is that it ends just right so you can wear it with other mesh pieces. It fits wonderfully with Paul Lapointe’s new mesh skirt with color change HUD designed by his amazing wife, Bastchild Lotus. The skirt comes with a HUD for 20 different colors and then you can add on this hud for 8 more styles:

Postmodern Jukebox

I love the thin belt, the high waist, the leather-textured panels. Paul and Bast are all about the details, which is what makes this a great piece and an excellent deal (all those colors in one skirt).

Babychampagne Sass is contributing a pair of high fashion, sexy shoes for the SL Fashion Week, which make this look complete. The fashionable red sole (evocative of a Laboutin shoe), the buckles and straps, and of course the stiletto heel give this look an edgy quality, especially when I pair it with Maxi Gossamer’s skull ring for Collabor88.

Postmodern Jukebox

Finally I wear Aida Ewing’s new skin for Collabor88, part of a set that includes wild makeups and then a plainer look—a two-fer bargain for an already low price! Mr. Truth Hawks gives us his new hair with a HUD. A menu of color choices allows the user to choose the shade she wants while keeping her inventory clear of a bazillion prims. Thank you, Truth!

Savin’ my money and I’m hella happy that’s a bargain, bitch

Domestic Bliss

Domestic Bliss

It takes patience to appreciate domestic bliss; volatile spirits prefer unhappiness. ~ George Santayana

Domestic Bliss

A long discussion in Skin Addiction led to an interesting revelation: premium membership in SL is a good deal. I pay $22.50 a quarter. For that I get 117 prims in a Linden home with privacy, 300L a week. That’s 13 weeks times 300L, which is 3900L. At 250L per USD, I get $15.60 kicked back to me to spend in world. So for $6.90 every quarter (so about $2.30 a month or 575L) I get a cute house with 117 prims. If I paid on a yearly budget, it would be even less ($72 USD a year). With that I get access to live chat (which always works for me, and I generally get satisfaction—Cori, you rock), access to member-only sandboxes, some silly content prizes (like vehicles, etc.) and the ability to buy mainland.

I pay more than $72 a month for cable and spend much more time in SL than watching TV. Damn, skippy. It’s a deal.

Domestic Bliss

I have furnished my Linden home with this gorgeous furniture from Kaerri Rae. Kaerri recently remodeled the Renaissance Galleria for BOSL and she took the design features from her build and translated them to a new furniture collection—the Buchanan collection. Featuring a rich gold and black accented by cool blue accessories, the furniture sets include love seats, club chairs and even a piano. Made in mesh, the furniture has low impact so you can put it in your Linden home and live stylishly.

Domestic Bliss

I also live stylishly with my chic wardrobe. Synny Whelan has recently built a new mesh store to contain all her stylish mesh footwear, including these sexy boots. The boots include a handy HUD that allows you to choose the boot color. You can buy the fatpack as shown below or color trios (see each column). The metals and soles also have color change.

Domestic Bliss

Sascha Frangilli put this dress out for 60L this weekend. With a great silhouette and classic styling, it’s a great look for hanging around the house (when you’re a fashionista). My jewelry set is Maxi Gossamer’s gorgeous set for Collabor88.

Domestic Bliss

I am wearing a casual and sexy new ‘do from Chiaki Xue. I love her short cuts with their loose waves. My gorgeous skin is one of Tricky Boucher’s offerings for Collabor88. Blue eyes suit the blue hyacinths that accent the décor.

Heatwave

Heat Wave

We’re having a heat wave,
A tropical heat wave,
The temperature’s rising,
It isn’t surprising,
She certainly can can-can.

She started a heat wave
By letting her seat wave
In such a way that
The customers say that
She certainly can can-can.

~ “Heat Wave” by Irving Berlin, as sung by Marilyn Monroe

Heat Wave

I heard it’s really hot in California, like a heat wave. I wonder what starlets wear when it’s hot out. Do they just hide in air-conditioned luxury or do they venture forth so the paparazzi can photo them? I dressed up as if I was expecting photos, wearing this lacy dress from Ariadna Garrigus that shows off all my hard work at the gym. With a black lingerie set underneath, this open work dress is perfect for a very hot day, letting in any cool breeze. High heels from Pixieplumb Flanagan (at a rock bottom price at Acid Lily—stars indeed ARE just like us) make the outfit complete.

Heat Wave

I am wearing Ava Grau’s gorgeous new skin again because it’s such a great look for blondes, especially with Kavar Cleanslate’s blonde textures, this applied to a gorgeous side-gathered look. This is his offering for FaMESHed, a gorgeous piece. My artsy jewelry is Maxi Gossamer’s product for the United Fashion Project. With Giela Delpaso’s nails, it’s a great look.

Heat Wave

Gee, her anatomy
Makes the mercury
Jump to ninety-three.

A tropical heat wave,
The way that she moves
That thermometer proves
That she certainly can can-can.
