Winter Is Coming

How did this happen? It seems a week ago I was on my bike, pedaling to the store. And now there’s snow on the ground, frost in the air, and jingle bells on my mind. I have pulled out my boots, my wool coat, my 200 scarves and mittens and have stashed my bike in the back of the garage. Winter is coming!

In SL it’s not such a big deal. A woman can walk around in a short skirt and not feel the chill. I went to a redone sim from Jac Mornington, with a definite Japanese feel (think Hokusai without the wave). The air was brisk but not enough to keep me from shooting a few photos in a cute dress from Lilly Juno, which I warmed up with a scarf from Jammeh and Nena Janus’ cute platform boots that were her fund raiser for Shoes4Soles at Shoetopia.

Izzie Button’s pumpkiny pretty skin from TDR Fusion and gorgeous hazel eyes from Isabella Requiem still let me cling to the last bits  of autumn before the harsh winter winds blow. I love this hat and hair combo from Mina Nakamura. The hat has a color change option in the HUD where you set the hair color.

The Temptation

I have temptation on the mind today because I recently made toffee bars with two sticks of butter and whole lot of brown sugar and chocolate and they kept beckoning me with their rich sweetness. I finally sealed them up in a container and shoved them in the freezer for Christmas but now the scemt of decadence lingers around me. Today I am show you an evening dress from Ariadne Garrigus that is itself pure temptation with its slim silhouette (belying my toffee bar binge), sequined hem and leg cut-up-to-there-and-then-some. With a simple bodice, the dress is all about that leg, and the leg shows off whatever fabulous shoes you happen to have.

In my case it’s a pair of high high heels from Siddean Munro. With an impossibly sexy wrap-around style and heels that are higher than high, these shoes are temptation itself. What is tempting is to go off and buy every shoe ever made for the Slink feet (every shoe that isn’t overpriced, that is) because you can look so gorgeous. These are Siddean’s newest shoes on her newest feet—a super high heeled foot that truly is designed for shoes only (you’d look funny wearing them separately). Siddean is selling them at Shoetopia but if you can’t get in or can’t see when you get there, she’s going to have them in her store.

Sawsan Secretspy keeps putting out gorgeous skins. I am wearing Donna, one of her newest skins and I love the eye makeup, especially the way it looks with Audrey Lamede’s group gift Portrait Eyes. AvaGardner Kungler is fulfilling her desire to be a jewelry maker in SL and shows us another of her beautiful designs with these earrings she is featuring at L’accessoire. And my girl, Queue Marlowe, has just issued another set of gorgeous hair using her HUD system. This beautiful romantic style is perfect for a tempting look like this one—full locks, curls and a romantic up-do.

The Red Bow

Nothing like a big red bow to tie up this beautiful package. I start with a gorgeous dress from Leri Miles—a flowered piece with a big red bow. I love the texture Leri has made, accentuated with her excellent shadow work and the lovely sheen of the bow. Lots of creators take premade mesh and slap textures on it—it takes artistry to make it special, and Leri has done that.

I feature the shoes of Steffen Garcia from Shoetopia. With a color change hud that controls textures for the buckle, sole and fabric insert, the shoes are sexy and versatile. They ARE made to wear on the Slink “Mid” feet, so don’t get them unless you have the feet or want to get them.

Audrey Lamede has sent out another group gift with her gorgeous eyes. A green-eyed blonde is so gorgeous, especially in one of Aida Ewing’s skins. Pretty lips and sexily lined eyes make this a beautiful skin. Add one of Kavar Cleanslate’s newest hairs with a great color changing HUD and this look is pretty as a present wrapped in a bow.

Pink Polka Dots

The Rockabilly Fashion Fair is still on for another week and with lagless and less-crowded shopping, it’s pretty fun and has a lot of great fashions. Ivy Burner’s contribution is this darling halter and capri set, pieces sold separately but perfect for matchy matching. Ivy includes with the set a HUD for changing the textures of the materials and trims so you can get both solid colors and polka dots. I went for the pink polka dot look, as you can see, to match my new shoes.

If lag isn’t such an issue to you, repeatedly try to tp to Shoetopia, which just opened two days ago, to pick up the shoes I show from Aranel Ah. Built for the Slink feet (yep, you can’t avoid ’em), the shoes are reasonably priced and darling. I just had to get a pair and proceeds from this color (if I recall) benefit the chosen charity, Soles4Souls.

Chiaki Xue has released a beautiful wavy flip, reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe. I pair it with one of Shyla Diggs’ and Tricky Boucher’s newest skin releases—Nina—and beautiful blue-brown eyes from Isabelle Requiem. A quick visit to Marketplace found me polka dotted jewelry from Ayumi Cassini to match my look.

The Shoe In

I have been to Heaven and back, and I’ll tell you, it’s quite a trip. Shoetopia opens today, and while I’m not an “official” blogger for Shoetopia, I was given early access and blogger samples with a bunch of other great bloggers, so I feel obligated to tell you about my visit and share some celestial enlightenment.

In true form they have made a literal shoe Heaven in the two sims. A path wanders through the clouds leading from gazebo to gazebo—a paradise of shoe shopping with some of the best shoe makers in SL and even a few designers who have dipped their toes in shoe-making (rather successfully, I must say). Highlights in my memory include Gos, N-Core, Lapointe and Bastchild (some to-die-for men’s shoes), Boom, Bax Boots, Pixel Mode, G Field, Slink, Baby Monkey, League, Kittie’s Lair, Ingenue, ArisAris, and BSD Design.

My first shoe is from BSD Design, one of the participants in Shoetopia. BabyChampagne Sass is donating 100% of the proceeds from the sale of one her shoes to Shoes4Soles (no link given in the Shoetopia blog), which is a generous donation for the caliber for BabyChampagne’s work. In fact, it seems each designer is giving 100% from one item, which is pretty damn generous. (Not positive how it works—donation details haven’t been posted on their blog and the press release they sent out was TLTR.) I pair it with a handbag from Juno Martel, proceeds going to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan from the Water Lantern Festival.

Let me tell you my impressions. First tip: Just get the Slink feet already. You can buy them right there as I did. Many shoes being sold are built around the feet. Of course, the price tag on some of those shoes is a bit high considering they don’t include a foot or the fancy HUD work that makes a footed shoe or the Slink foot cost 600 or 700L. You can get a nice Gos shoe or N-Core for the same price without having to mess around. (In other words, I willingly pay Gos and Nuria for development costs for their HUDS and webhosting. People who build shoes around a Slink foot shouldn’t be charging as much because their cost is simply not as high.) However there are a few darling and reasonable shoes that fit the Slink feetsies. I gave up and got the feet myself just so I could wear the cute shoes I keep seeing.

Second, be prepared for this event: lag is gonna be a huge issue–more than it should be. Graphical lag may well be a factor–I am not sure if textures from the vendors have been enforced at 512 or less. However, sim lag is definitely gonna get you because of the build. None of the structures or vendors are phantom and of course, all the charity vendors are scripted as well as the gacha vendors. Avatar scripts had not been turned off as of my visit there.  If the organizers experience sim lag—and they will—it’ll be about the massive amounts of collision. There’s so much folks can do before opening without asking customers to dress like newbies. They haven’t done it all.

Finally, let’s be frank: you’re not going to get in right away, kids. Agent limit is 45. That’s ok! Shoetopia goes on for TWO weeks. Don’t rush it. You don’t have to be the first one in. The shoes aren’t going anywhere and your size won’t be sold out. They are passing demos out in a group and a map is being posted on their blog so you can find the creator you like quickly. Besides, the lag during the opening days should be enough to discourage you. Take your time and wander over during the next week when you hopefully can enjoy the shopping with less lag.

Give the organizers a hand. It’s a lot of work. And goodness knows, they mean to do well because they have been at it for months. And the designers really showed up for this event. Hit Shoetopia before it ends on November 30 and drop a few on Shoes4Soles.

Home Is Where the Heart Is

For the past couple weeks I have been working hard on things in my RL home—specifically we are redoing the family room in anticipation of four different holiday parties this year. The carpet needed replacing. I had had it with the horrible wallpaper. And we needed some new shelving. The house is a mess because we have displaced everything to get to the walls and floor. But it’s starting to come into focus, slowly but surely. (Check back with me after the carpet is installed!)

Such a project is not so hard in SL, blessedly, especially when you get a beautiful, fully-furnished house like Cain Maven’s latest redo on his Eco design. The Eco III furnished includes a dining room, living room and bedroom set (with some adult poses), art on the walls and decorative plants. Just rez and go.

If you’re feeling like it, you can add your own touches, like this chair from Cory Edo, which is being sold at Collabor88 in a kazillion colors or Lilly Juno’s mid century modern chair (shown below) that includes several gorgeous poses. Lilly is back in SL if you were a fan of Immerse, selling both furniture and clothing.

Spooky Mistwallow has opened a new store called “Mirage” which includes pieces that are influenced by Persian and Arabic arts. Her recent dress, which I am wearing, cleverly uses a Persian rug design with lace added to it. The ladies from N-Core—Nuria Augapfel and Claire Messenger—are featuring drop dead gorgeous sling backs at FaMESHed in over a dozen colors. These are classics, made to go with several looks, and they match beautifully using N-Core’s web-based color matching system.

I <3 Maxi Gossamer’s jewelry, especially this intricate clockwork heart that Maxi is featuring at Collabor88. The lacey nail appliers from Sasy Scarborough accent the heart ring from Maxi. The full and lush, almost bouffant blonde style from Tabata Jewell suits Aida Ewing’s newest skin, Elvi, in tone and fashionality. And Audrey Lamede’s gorgeous hazel eyes complete the look.

The Timekeeper

For this “character,” I imagined a woman who keeps time, who controls time for a universe. To control the time would be the most powerful person and so she is stately and almost otherworldly. I start with a dress from Juno Mantel that she offered as a gacha in the Fantasy Gacha Fair (which is closed now—sorry). I hit the rare on both the gown and the ruff and just had to show it because I am so impressed with her work. Juno does fantasy with lush fabrics—satins and velvets—on mesh, presumably her own because I have not see anything quite like this anywhere else.

Graizioso Alekseev’s eyepiece is unique and defines this Timekeeper. Included in the eyepiece are separate scripts for the large eyepiece and the dangling watch which allow you to track the time in two different time zones (in this case, CST where I am and Japan, where Grazioso is). The tiny detail is amazing.

I chose Circe Ishtari’s close-cut bob in a red tone. Circe has been making a lot of hair as of late and she includes a color change script in the hair (without a HUD) to allow for texture changes. From “natural” to “fantastic,” she has a variety of colors. Rocketta Haven offers this gorgeous skin, very clearly her style with the full lips, the artistic eyes with a smudged, time-stamped eye and the winged brows. Audrey Lamede offered these eyes as a sampler to her group members. With eensy irises, they make this Timekeeper’s glow with premonition.

The hour has been added back to our days and now the days grow dark quickly where I live. I spent the afternoon in the rare sunshine (it’s been raining a lot), raking up the birch tree leaves that have fallen in my front and back yard. I got what I fear is one of my last bike rides in for the season and dumped the gangly tomato plant at the curb. The herbs are safely inside, sunning in the kitchen window. The hibiscus is unhappily standing in my office (not sure I can get it through the winter—probably not).

A warm sweater is what is needed now—and this long sweater dress from Angelina Eizenberg does the trick. I love the colors stitched into the sweater, the big cowl neck and how it covers my bum, which gets cold outside. Of course, I can’t give up my capris just yet, so these darling short jeans from Siddean Munro (she doesn’t just do feet, folks!) are the ticket. Rustic boots with a handy color-change HUD from Tash Porthos keep my feet warm and cute too.

Shyla Diggs and Tricky Boucher have just released a new skin—Nina. It’s become the reigning principal among the top skin makers that makeups and a variety of looks is the way to keep things going and Shyla’s keeping up with the best of them. Of course we have again the subtle makeups, the beautiful eyes and brows and the gentle blush. And underneath the big sweater, there is a gorgeous body, of course. Truth Hawks made my casual and cute ponytails—much less little girl than just easy wearing.

Picture Perfect

Most SL photographers work either with a background that is invisible (green screen) or in a sim with pretty views or with a studio that has just textured walls. Tya Fallingbridge is adding a new element to this—the physical drop cloth that a photographer uses for a background, which she is selling at FaMESHed this month. It’s great for photos either as a texture or as an actual self-conscious background. With a texture-change script, the background can be any of a number of colored textures. (Note, edit the main mesh prim to turn off full bright for this to work well with shadows.)

To be picture perfect, I wear this darling new outfit from Ariadna Garrigus—a see through halter with a leather mini and leather thigh high boots. What distinguishes this outfit from others is the translucence and fit, but also the well made boots, which do not fold like a straw when bent at the knee. (This is a particular bugaboo of mine in pants, boots, and mesh legs attached to derrieres.) Her textures in white are excellent—nuanced and shaded well. (White is the hardest color to do in SL.)

I am especially picture perfect in this darling hat/hair combo from Mirja Mills. With a particularly delightful name (the “Harper”), the hat comes with four hair styles—the long straight mesh style you see here, a braided updo, wavy short cut and a flexi longer cut. Mirja includes a texture change HUD for choice of hair color as well. Shyla Diggs issued a series of gorgeous skins for this weekend’s Belleza Best Buys, this being one of them with pretty lips and lovely pinkified makeup around the eyes. Audrey Lamede is offering these gorgeous baby blue eyes as a group gift to her VIPs. Maxi Gossamer brings her craft to FaMESHed this month with this darling heart pendant in long or short, gold or silver, with a color change stone in the middle.

All Saints Day

Halloween in my town was cold and rainy and windy and ghostless though the blowing of the winds was certainly chilling and the darkness was eerie. I sought a respite from the creepiness of the evening with Callie and her KittyCats. I had just gotten the cutest dress from Ivy Burner (group gift for Halloween—thank you!) and Kavar Cleanslate had come out with a whole bunch of new hair, including these lovely locks, wavy and all brought to the side. Callie had other ideas.

First she had me see her Silly Spook KittyCats. With a ghostly translucence, these kitties are scary but fun all at once (due to Callie’s charming artwork). The little feline ghosties tried to engage me in play, but I wasn’t quite into it.

Callie introduced me to her “Hell-O-Kittehs,” a group of underworld wildcats with choatic textures and crazy glowing eyes. They tried to suck me down into their inferno (reminiscent of more than one person who has told me to “go to Hell”), but I was rescued by…

Super Cats! These kitties pulled me skyward where I could float among the clouds. With their darling superhero costumes and bright masks, these caped crusaders assured my place in Heaven on All Saints Day. All three collectible KittyCats are available now at their store and on Marketplace.
