Winter Morning Walks

Winter Morning Walks

Perfectly still this solstice morning,
in bone-cracking cold. Nothing moving,
or so one might think, but as I walk the road,
the wind held in the heart of every tree
flows to the end of each twig and forms a bud.

~ “December 21, Clear and five degrees” by Ted Koozer, lyrics to “Perfectly Still This Solstice Morning” by Maria Schneider, performed by Dawn Upshaw

Winter Morning Walks

A few years ago, Ted Koozer, who was Poet Laureate of the US from 2004 to 2006, was treated for cancer and was told that he could not be exposed to sunlight for a year after his radiation, so he took walks in the early morning for his health and to avoid the sun. He lives in eastern Nebraska, and anyone who knows plains’ weather, it can be damn cold in the winter. A challenge from his friend, Jim Harrison, became a set of poems on postcards sent each day, which became the book Winter Morning Walks. Maria Schneider subsequently wrote music to these poems, and Dawn Upshaw, one of my favorite sopranos, sings the poems to her music. (She had been treated for breast cancer herself.) This album was just released, and the poems and music are quietly beautiful and have a purpose for me.

Fashion for Life 2013 is about to start, and while I am not involved in it this year, I still support its purpose, which is to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society in SL, under the Relay for Life program. While this year is quite the extravaganza with fashion shows and elaborate builds, the core of it is still the community organization to support Relay for Life. Each designer participating is offering creations for which 100% of proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. The participants also had to contribute a substantial fund to the donations. Many have been personally affected by cancer for themselves of loved ones. So it’s an event worth visiting.

Winter Morning Walks

One of the sponsors this year is Poulet Koenkamp. Poulet is generously offering three dresses in limited colors as her contribution for the cause. One is this beautiful dress in purple, adorned with roses that  trail down the body. Poulet was a sponsor last year and I recall her store was beautifully done and her creations generously offered. It would be worth a visit to see her work.

My hair is also an offering for Fashion for Life, this from Mirja Mills, another sponsor. I have seen a preview of her offerings and all are elaborate combinations of mesh, flexi and sculpty with braids and gems and other adornments. Mirja had a great store as well with hair and clothing both, and I look forward to seeing what she has to offer this year.

My skin is one of Tricky Boucher’s for the Whore Couture fair, another gorgeous skin that is worth a visit to the event. And my eyes, oh my eyes! New ones from Ikon Innovia!! I am so happy to see he is releasing more!

Winter Morning Walks

How important it must be
to someone
that I am alive, and walking,
and that I have written
these poems.

This morning the sun stood
right at the end of the road
and waited for me.

It’s Time.. But Not Much Longer

It's Time.. But Not Much Longer

Fashion for Life will be closing at midnight tonight and that will be another year concluded. A longer post detailing everyone’s considerable contributions will be going out tomorrow.

As for today, I want to remind everyone why we do Fashion for Life: we do it, indeed, to raise money for Relay for Life in SL. We do it to kick off the Relay for Life season in SL with a extravagant, beautiful event that lets hundreds of creators participate, giving momentum to the whole RFL season. Most importantly, however, we do it to remind our fellow residents—those who are survivors, those who are patients, those who are caregivers, and those who are loved ones—that we care. This is our way of telling cancer we won’t give up. I said this last year and it bears repeating:

Cancer can seem like a diagnosis without hope; we want to give even the smallest bit of hope we can.

It's Time.. But Not Much Longer

That being said, let me show you this last minute generous donation from Sonatta Morales. For a mere 200L donated to Relay for Life, you can get this beautiful Sonatta Morales dress. Now if you know Sonatta’s work, you know it’s the highest quality available in SL with an eye for the smallest details. I saw on this dress that she has overlaid a sheer, zebra print over a sexy bodice and has carefully trimmed all the edges. It’s a low donation for such a quality piece of work.

She put it out today to get you to come here and get it to benefit Relay for Life. Get it today because tomorrow, it will be gone.

Gospel Voom said not a word to me but went straight to his work when he participated in Fashion for Life. He registered, set up his store, and left, with some gorgeous offerings benefiting Relay for Life including these chic pumps.

It's Time.. But Not Much Longer

I show the skin the whole grid is talking about—Aida Ewing’s new Leah. I keep hearing in groups how beautiful it is and I put it on and indeed, it’s something else. I think Aida has really hit it on the head this time, creating someting that will appeal to many with its freshness, it’s absolutely delicious eye makeup and lips and its wonderful tone.

My eyes, they sparkle, because Ikon Innovia decided to come back to Fashion for Life. Last year he debuted his eyes at Fashion for Life and became the talk of the town with his beautiful, deep peppers. This year he returns with a new line and a fresh look to his brand. Thanks for coming back, toots ;)

The Kitty Liberation Front

If you ever heard of the Gnome Liberation Front or have seen the movie Amelie, you will know what this all about—liberation! I got the FFL KittyCatS (and even one wearing the vest KittyCatS is donating for FFL), and liberated them! That means I took them all over the sims and took photos of them in different places to show Callie I am liberating them.

The Kitty Liberation Front

The Parisian pair (called KittyCatS! Fashionista Feline Homme – FFL 2012 and KittyCatS! Fashionista Feline Femme – FFL 2012) were taken from the DreamSeekers Czas sim and whisked over to the DreamSeeker Aika sim where they felt more at home.

The Kitty Liberation Front

Then the two found themselves on the top of the clock tower at the DreamSeeker Its Time sim.

The Kitty Liberation Front

Our little tabby wearing the custom FFL vest KittyCatS is offering found himself lost among some trees on DreamSeeker Vrijeme.

The Kitty Liberation Front

Our Feline Femme found herself up a tree on DreamSeeker Volta, a little confused about its futuristic style.

The Kitty Liberation Front

Our Feline Homme discoveredthe roof of the movie theater at DreamSeeker Zeit.

The Kitty Liberation Front

Then our Feline Femme wandered over to the DreamSeeker Epoque sim to take time to smell the flowers…

The Kitty Liberation Front

…while our Feline Homme pondered Roman philosophy at the DreamSeeker Momentum sim.

The Kitty Liberation Front

The two met up on DreamSeeker Tijd sim to bask in the sun under the rays of the disco glove in the secret Mondrian pool built atop one of the buildings.

The Kitty Liberation Front

Somehow all three KittyCatS thought the catwalk on DreamSeeker Tiempo was built just for them. Silly KittyCatS!

The Kitty Liberation Front

Finally our Feline Homme found himself back at DreamSeeker Czas, lost in a waterfall and wishing he was safe back in his home at the KittyCatS store….

Find KittyCatS on the DreamSeeker Czas sim where you can purchase either one of the Fashionista Felines or cute vests for your own KittyCatS. Please note, the Fashionista Felines are NOT breedable cats—simply cute ones to decorate your home, office or store. No food NEEDED. Just love and a few free prims ;)

Where I’ve Been

Where I've Been

I hate those blogs that start out with “I know I haven’t blogged in a week but I have been busy cleaning my sock drawer and solving world hunger.” Well, I have been doing neither. I have been working on Fashion for Life. If you don’t know about this or don’t know I have been working on FFL, well.. where have YOU been?

Where I've Been

I have been shopping as much as anyone. I walk to place a kiosk and something catches my eye and soon enough I am right clicking everything in sight. (The gachas are particularly captivating to my chagrin and the pain of my inventory.) Mami Jewell is offering this absolutely gorgeous dress as one of her Fashion for Life donations, and I have to say, I was mesmerized. From the deep pink color highlighted with glittering edges to the beautiful sprays of flowers at the shoulder, waist and hip. Come to Fashion for Life to get this dress with 100% of proceeds going to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society!

Where I've Been

I donned one of Pompeja Rossini’s gorgeous Fashion for Life exclusive skins to wear with this dress. I was entranced by its glamorous look and beautiful make ups. My eyes are a pair generously offered in a set from Audrey Lamede. She has donated almost ALL the content in her store for Relay for Life, and it’s a win to get these gorgeous eyes. My hair is a gorgeous updo from Tabata Jewell, another great win for Fashion for Life.

Where I've Been

Beautiful and fighting cancer too!

For Life

In the past few days I have been quite busy. Invitations for Fashion for Life 2012 have been sent out and we have been seeing people register at a very fast pace. This is the second year I have co-led FFL; last year Delora Starbrook snatched it from death when Nevar Lobo suddenly resigned and Syngen Sohmers helped me keep it going. This year Syngen is co-leading with me again, I am so pleased (and relieved) to say. It’s very gratifying to feel that all the work Syngen and I do up front is worth it when we see so many registering and cheering us on. Our work is 100% volunteer—I get nothing and make nothing from this. Syngen doesn’t, none of our builders or staff members do—it ALL goes to ACS. And it’s a lot of work and time for us.

Let me explain my personal reasons for helping run Fashion for Life. First, I have come to realize that service is very important in my life. Doing Fashion for Life is how I give service to my community in SL. It’s a good cause—I have been touched by cancer—my grandmother had a brain tumor, my aunt died from a brain tumor, and I have two friends in SL—one of them very dear to me–currently being treated for cancer. I hear nowadays from each about the pain of their surgeries, the nausea and fatigue caused by their chemotherapy, and the financial trouble the illness is bringing to them.

I know some people have reservations about giving money to the American Cancer Society because the administration of the society as a whole has not received the very highest grades for use of donated funds from some websites. Some are concerned that monies are given in grants to studies that will help big pharma, etc. These are potentially viable concerns. (I say “potentially” because *I* personally feel pharma has enough damn money to do its own evil without involving the American Cancer Society.)

The truth is that the American Cancer Society is a very big and very diverse organization. If you read their mission statement, you will see their statement is very compact but encompasses a LOT of actual programs (and encompasses a very broad health concern—cancer). It’s a BIG organization. As they state, “Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the ACS has 12 chartered Divisions, more than 900 local offices nationwide, and a presence in more than 5,100 communities.” That’s a lot of employees, rent, paperwork, etc. And they spread their influence politically, financially, and educationally. If the ACS’s agenda of stopping cancer is not yours, then you shouldn’t donate. However, I can’t see how anyone could say they don’t want to stop cancer.

One of their main programs is the Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a grassroots effort that is organized in communities around the country wherein people get together, run together under the name of the American Cancer Society and also support each other and get more info about cancer. It’s really an ingenious program because while ACS is raising funds, they are doing a great service on the ground.

How is that? Many of the people involved in these fundraising efforts for Relay for Life have been personally touched by cancer—either as survivors or caretakers, friends or relatives. When they show up to do a Relay for Life event, they are touching a part of their own identities, a very personal experience they are sharing with the mass of people who are also participating. The effort behind Relay for Life is also a sort of big middle finger to cancer, saying they defy the pain and hurt it causes. When people show up, they provide community, support and vital information for each other.

This is the reason I support Relay for Life in Second Life. It’s not just about posting numbers—though I would like to see Fashion for Life smash our records. It’s also about supporting the members of our community in SL who have been touched by cancer—including me.

Heaven

Heaven heaven
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Heaven heaven

The rhythm of wheels the rhythm of heels
That we fall into the sun
She walk on silver she walk on gold

Heaven

We are still watching the Fashion for Life totals slowly tick up due to the generosity of some designers who continue to sell their exclusive pieces on behalf of the American Cancer Society. Geryn Sloane is one of those very generous individuals. She has been an ardent supporter of the cause, both with her beautiful creations and with her enthusiastic attitude. She is not a huge name in SL; she is not making tons of money (though she could use it), yet she generously gives to RFL and Fashion for Life of her time and energy—she is an unsung hero. Her fashions are glamorous and colorful with touches of sexiness (like the low cut back on this dress—woohoo!).

Heaven

I wear with a gorgeous skin from Tuli Asturias, who seems to be remaking her older skins and adding all sorts of glorious add ons. Hair is a newish curly style from Truth Hawks, who seems to have the market on sexy waves in SL. Jewelry is an older set from Tiffy Vella, who is expanding her repertoire to shoes and gloves now. She does amazing work!

I Think Pink

“The very pink of perfection.” ~ Oliver Goldsmith

I Think Pink

Saya Littlething, the creator of Schoen, decided to contribute to Fashion for Life because her father is being treated for cancer of the large intestine. Recently, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan affected her family as well as they live near the epicenter.

Saya continued to support Fashion for Life because cancer was her main concern and the main thing touching her life, earthquake and tsunami notwithstanding. Despite the trouble in her country, she persisted with Fashion for Life, and she has continued to do so by offering this cute jacket as a donation item in her store with all proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society. Her shop is full of cute items, many of them considerably well crafted and great for casual wear for men and women.

I Think Pink

I wear with shoes from Renee Harvy, another FFL offering at her store and skin from Monicuzza Babenco, recently offered at The Dressing Room. My pants are from Anessa Stine, model and now designer, who has taken the DCNY label under her wing and is filling the store with new creations weekly.

Finally, my hair is from the always friendly chiaki Xue, who partnered up with mappy Handrick of ARAI to make this cute style. I saw it on a man the other day and it wasn’t bad, but I sure like it for a girl, especially with its color change hat.

Too Beautiful to Work

I have a lot of stuff to do—blogs to write, hair to demo, KittyCatS to feed, chickens to knit. But I have to pause and just enjoy Harper for a second.

Too Beautiful to Work

It’s because of LeeZu Baxter’s newest dress offered in the Noir line. It seems LeeZu has been enjoying a burst of creative energy lately. She has been sending out beautiful content for a few weeks now and she has also posted free wallpapers she has made. (As if she doesn’t have enough to do!) This dress is an assemblage of beauty with its combination of netting, feathers, ribbons, and sculpted stamen with an A-line silhouette, sleek gloves and a sweet little hair piece.

Too Beautiful to Work

My skin is from Gianni Broda (renamed Harlen Christy in-world but for search purposes, Gianna Broda). This skin, while a little flat, is a great alternative if you like a more anime look. My hair is from the lovely Chiaki Xue, who is cranking out new content at an amazing rate. Her textures are sublime, especially when it comes to wavy hair, and she has a real knack for shorter styles. I love wearing her boy hair but this time I have one of her girl hairs on with its lovely light blonde coloring. I wore Ikon’s eyes in a larger size here to further push that anime look, dark eyes which are especially beguiling with this light skin and hair.

We have already had the time change where I live and it’s been a great boon to my spirits. It’s great to have daylight last into the dinner hour again.

Spring Forward

SarahTheRed Aurbierre is selling this fresh and lovely dress as a Fashion for Life exclusive in her store. Click on the vendor, buy it, and all proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society. I can’t help but gush over this dress, which is light in its texture and movement and provides a simple canvas for dressing up in many different ways.

Spring Forward

That’s why accessorizing is so important. AvaGardner Kungler’s beautiful jewelry set with its exquisite beads and textures pops on a simple background. Lara Hurley’s beautiful skin provides a richness to this look with its deep tone, smooth texture and nuanced highlights. Lara doesn’t overdo it, which makes this skin elegant and understated. Elikapeka Tiramisu’s ponytail with the face-framing short bangs, is a pretty top to this look.

Spring Forward

The ultimate accessory are the shoes, of course, which can make or break you. Nardya Rousselot’s lovely new sandals (in gold!), complete this look stylishly. With a delicate little ankle buckle and some of the prettiest toes on the grid, these can go from a more casual look like this to something really dressy in a snap.

House of RFyre at Fashion for Life

Dear Readers:

As most of you may or may not know, I have worked for Raven Pennyfeather for over three years in SL. She is a personal friend as well as an employer. I rarely blog her work in my own blog because I am so familiar with it I feel I can’t speak about it coherently or “objectively.” I have seen the inside of this sausage factory, and I have to tell you, each piece is made with pure love and goodness and joy by Raven. There is no other way to say it. She puts her heart into her creations; they are her vision and her art and she wants so greatly to share this beauty and fun with others in SL.

She has been preoccupied with new vistas in RL so she has not been in SL as much. However we speak on the phone frequently, and she has been supportive and enthusiastic about Fashion for Life. She also didn’t want to see Nevar’s and Ame’s hard work be lost so she was glad when I took it on but she has not been thrilled with not having me available to her. She will be glad when I am back at RFyre (as will I).

I am very emotional about Raven; she has been as dear a friend to me, in RL as in SL, as anyone for the past 3+ years. I couldn’t possibly fit into the blog here or on the Fashion for Life website (where I really should not get mushy and personal), how I feel. So this blog is entirely poorly written, clumsy, and not nearly good enough for what she and her work deserve.

~ Harper

As Fashion for Life closes, we have to give thanks to one of our sim sponsors, for many things. Raven Pennyfeather has always supported the RFL Clothing Fair and Fashion for Life. She made friends with Nevar and Amethyst and has had them to dinner in her RL home several times, supporting their work because she knew it was important and they were her friends. However, two years ago, Raven’s father was diagnosed with breast cancer, rare but not unknown in men. While she ran her business, House of RFyre, she ran from her house to his weekly to assist him (100 miles away), logging on from his home after she had taken him to his chemo treatments, to check her business and design. Raven had always supported RFL, but once his diagnosis came, it became even more important to her. Her donation for being a sim sponsor was entirely selfless—she wanted to put RFyre’s name on this important cause as a personal endorsement, especially as she has seen her father go into remission.

Raven’s support of Fashion for Life has been long-standing, first with Nevar and Ame and now with the new coleads, Harper and Syngen. In fact, Raven sacrificed her assistant, Harper, to FFL and has suffered (supposedly) with Harper so preoccupied. Thank you, Raven, for giving me the time and room to do this.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

It is a great honor to have Raven Pennyfeather be one of the sim sponsors at Fashion for Life. Her generous heart imbues all her work and her dark romantic nature translates to the vision for her work. Consider this couture offering from Raven with its leather jacket on top over a swirling translucent ethereal black skirt and topped with a smart top hat with lace veil. Raven never makes a minimal outfit—she truly wants to give her customers her best and all she can with each ensemble.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

One of Raven’s newer offerings is the Hearts on Fyre series, including this evening gown. Inspired by the designs of Ed Harvy, Raven made her own clothing “tattoo” motifs and carried them to this gown and to more casual sets for men and women. Her colors are rich and luxe.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

Raven has always aimed to fulfill her male customer’s needs as well. In this she has a very romantic vision as well. Her men are dressed in the finest materials—leather, satin, wool, lace. The handsome tux above from her Wintertide series can take a man from ballroom to personal Interview with the Vampire. The more formal Eduoard below with its shorter cut and tails and chained closure and romantic bow tie, can take a man to the most formal affair.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

One last day for Fashion for Life. Today. Get here NOW to get some of these beautiful items and many many more before they disappear and this whole beautiful please is gone!
