Snowblind

My friend, Asima Saad, offered a guest blog out of the blue and I gladly accepted it because I will be out of town for a few days. So here is Asima’s blog with her photos and her story. “I get by with a little help from my friends…” Thank you, Asima.

She waved back over her shoulder to her favorite barista and stepped back out into the cold–too cold–air. She shivered with a little ‘Brr’ sound escaping her lips. Though she knew the walk back to the car would be a long one. When she had arrived the lot was filled with cars, but now it was completely empty.

This all had set the stage for what began to happen next. Without warning, strange white flakes began to descend from the sky. They were large, and at first, she was concerned as to what they were. She’d seen ash fall from a burning building, but this was different. There was no smell of smoke. No flash of flame on the wind. Just the cold, and the peace that came with it.

The entire city seemed to just accept this graceful blanket being dropped upon her shoulders ever so gently. And Asima too couldn’t help but but smile skyward. Her skin tingling with chill and excitement. It was her first real snow, and it was quite awe-inducing. That something with so much power, could be so still, and so completely tranquil.

What Barely’s Wearing Today

Barely swears to me this look gets the chicks. I can kinda see why. There’s the studied insouciance, the combination of patterns and a sort of funky warm masculinity that shows a touch of boyishness and vulnerability, which is so Barely.

Caught in the Wild

As it’s known, sometimes I am too lazy to do my own blog so I pull in another avatar who has a fabulous look to stand in for me. Today I feature the avatar Omenapu, who so kindly offered to pose for me and write something up.

She is a tribal elf, wandering the demilitarized territory between two great civilizations. Stealing and hunting to make a living, and rarely mixing with humanity.

Much of this outfit was created by the masterful Pucca Firecaster, whose texturing and design of all things fantasy is second to none. And just begs to be layered and mixed.

 

Don’t be afraid to play with attachments and mix-and-match accessories to achieve a style. Custom tinting is very easy to do on moddable items and can be all you need to tie an outfit together.

I tend to use only moddable items when making an outfit in SL. Very often, I will see a particular part of an item that I like, but do not necessarily care to use the whole item. I’ll edit a face and make parts invisible, and link and attach things in places for which they were not designed, just to get that certain je ne sais quoi.

He’s Ba-ack!

He’s back like a bad penny, like a persistent cold sore, like my property tax bill, like dandelions in spring, like tiny little seeds in my raspberry jam that jam themselves in between my teeth and I can’t get them out… well you get the point. Barely Texan has wheedled his way back into my blog.

Barely’s not about the accolades; he doesn’t care if he glitters or glares or struts. He just cares that he looks cool and reflects a unique sartorial presence—when there aren’t barbecue stains on his sweater.

Out of Touch

Manic moves and drowsy dreams
Or living in the middle
Between the two extremes.

Once in a while I have a guest blogger. I have had Asima Saad on the blog before and she wanted to cook up another look and blog entry, which I gladly accepted. Asima does a lot of RP and loves writing and dressing up. Hope you enjoy her look and story as much as I did.

Leah glanced upward at the clock on the wall and cracked her gum.

The rink was empty, and even the weirdos had called it a night. She shut off the lights to the popcorn machines, and soda fountains, then ran her fingertips along the long red countertop. Some guy had scraped into the red pressboard ‘SLAYER’ with something sharp and her nails glided easily across the deep grooves.

She wiggled her toes in one of the neon high-top sneaker as the music from the sound system wound its way through the vacant rink. She closed her eyes.

“Manic moves and drowsy dreams
Or living in the middle
Between the two extremes”

Synthesizers and drums created a sonic surf that she could swim in. And she lost herself in the rolling tides of the epic tune.

When the sound started to fade, headlights cut their way through the glass of the doorway, and she dropped down, snagging a cluster of keys on her dash to catch her ride home.

Narcissus

“Narcissus so himself himself forsook,
And died to kiss his shadow in the brook.” ~ William Shakespeare

The story of Narcissus from Greek mythology is the core word of the illness of narcissism, one where a person can only think of themselves and regard themselves as perfect. In the Ovid’s version of the story, Narcissus rejects the love of the mountain nymph, Echo, and Nemesis, the goddess of revenge decides to punish him. So she lures him to a pool where he saw his own reflection. He falls in love with the one he sees, not realizing at first it is himself.

Tutsy Navarathna took a clever turn with this tale for his latest machinima. An entry in the latest University of Western Australia Machinima Challenge, his film addresses the theme of “Reflections.” Tutsy literally brought a reflection to bear in this film.

I loved the machinima, especially the one that was narrated in French by Tutsy himself and has English subtitles. (See above.) Tutsy Navarathna hails from Paris but currently makes his home in India. Some of his voiceovers come from friends in India. He also involved many friends in the production of the film, including Iono Allen and Alpha Auer. That is what makes this machinima and the competition itself so exciting—the collaboration of artists from all over the planet.

In watching the film, I thought about our own gaze at our avatar, the pride and “love” we have for this figure we have made. How many of us cling to our “selves,” carefully adorning it, protecting our “image” and self. It’s a film that echoes with many layers as we watch, being more than just a literal “reflection” but also a reflection on our selves.

Being the person who does a fashion blog, I asked Tutsy about the fashions he used to make Narcissus, of course. And Tutsy agreed to be the model for this blog. So you get the machinima AND a backstage look at the star.

Tutsy made his own shape and on this long lean shape he piled layers and layers of tattoos and piercings to make his Narcissus contemporary and attractive. In the machinima, his Narcissus is brooding and solitary and almost singularly beautiful. And narcissistic.

Asima Saad, which is the display name for Unregistered Resident, is a friend who sometimes has great ideas for my blog. She had heard a song she thought I should blog while bragging about her new mesh hands from Siddean Munro. I challenged her to do the blog herself, and well, she did. What Barely’s Wearing Today

Barely “Emo” Texan has shown up again on the blog, this time in a more punk/new wave look. Start with this awesome military jacket from Kauna (which I shot in this funky pose to prove that mesh moves with a lot of craziness. What Barely’s Wearing Today

Barely and I had a little discussion about his photos. He just got that LUMIPro and he’s be going to town with it (literally—he won’t let it go—he sleeps with it). I said, “That’s fine. The photos are artsy and emo, but people want to see the clothes.” He then sent me photos labeled “Barely Emo.” I think that should be his new display name.

I like this look because it’s eclectic and rock n roll. I especially like the pattern on the shirt from Voodoo Gear and the skin from Fruk. He looks like your little brother, grown up to go out clubbing or play in his alternative band.
