Caught in the Wild

Caught in the Wild

“So, I ask you. Who is the happier elf? She who has braved the seas of life and risked everything, or she who has stood upon the shore and merely existed?” (based on a quote by Hunter S. Thompson)

Caught in the Wild

As it’s known, sometimes I am too lazy to do my own blog so I pull in another avatar who has a fabulous look to stand in for me. Today I feature the avatar Omenapu, who so kindly offered to pose for me and write something up.

She is a tribal elf, wandering the demilitarized territory between two great civilizations. Stealing and hunting to make a living, and rarely mixing with humanity.

Much of this outfit was created by the masterful Pucca Firecaster, whose texturing and design of all things fantasy is second to none. And just begs to be layered and mixed.

Caught in the Wild

Don’t be afraid to play with attachments and mix-and-match accessories to achieve a style. Custom tinting is very easy to do on moddable items and can be all you need to tie an outfit together.

I tend to use only moddable items when making an outfit in SL. Very often, I will see a particular part of an item that I like, but do not necessarily care to use the whole item. I’ll edit a face and make parts invisible, and link and attach things in places for which they were not designed, just to get that certain je ne sais quoi.

Lazaretto

Lazaretto

My veins are blue and connected
And every single bone in my brain is electric

~ “Lazaretto” by Jack White

Lazaretto

I love Jack White and I love his latest songs. The cutting edge of his song “Lazaretto” seemed to match this look, most of which I picked up at District 5. Start with a top from CrystalDoll Lemon from her fully-made mesh and textures. It’s sexy without being over the top (no pun intended) and suits the great plaid punk skirt Paul Lapointe and Bastchild Lotus made exclusively for District 5. The skirt is, as usual, a Paul/Bast wonder with a incredibly versatile texture-change HUD that includes dozens of plaids, leather textures, and metals for mix and match infinitum.

I got my cuffs in Moonbubble Gothly’s gacha. I lucked out and got the color I wanted right off. (Sorry, you didn’t make money, Moonbubble.) My awesome and bright platform boots with studs all over (to keep the ankle biters away) are Mikhayla13’s can be found at District 5 as well.

Lazaretto

My wicked skin is Lluna Nitely’s exclusive for District 5, a truly punk style with heavily lined eyes and glossy lips in several tones to match up with your outfits. The hairbase is part of the set Mina Nakamura is selling at Kustom 9, a unisex cut with a special set of textures including this terrific ombre, Look closely at my great necklace set from Lolly Carlberg. It’s also available at District 5 for a perfect punk look.

The N’dali

The N'Dali

“The N’dali of the temperate forests and hills of Southern Peninsula of Melanasia are an independent tribe of traders and craftspeople. They are most noted for their fine metalwork and technology in working with exotic creature skins and feathers such as those of the phoenix and dragon. Their people are homogenous with genetic markers such as pale fine caucasian skin, thick dark black hair and most amazingly, golden eyes, which appear ubiquitously through the N’dali people but are known as a rare recessive gene across other populations.

The N'Dali

“As the culture is matrifocal, women enjoy a great degree of independence and power. Free of the pressures of typical patriarchal societies, both women and men flourish as leaders, artisans, nurturers and tradespeople. Some occupations weigh heavier towards one sex or the other but both sexes enjoy the opportunity to choose their vocation. Parenthood is shared, with all children taught the concept of n’dalia, or fidelity to social oneness and community. The people are, overall, very insular and communicate very reluctantly with others except in trade. It could be said that their cultural ethos is ‘G’sip a g’ringen’ or ‘Words are power.’

“As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the N’dali women’s garb is made entirely by local artisans. First, the top and skirt are sewn from treated dragonskin, which is created from a process of steps that range from the original hunt of dragons by specialized warriors to the butchering of dragons and curing of dragonskin by skilled craftspeople. The dragonskin is surprisingly light but flexible and protective—it can withstand high temperatures and resists puncturing. The collars and belt of their garments are fashioned by artisans trained via apprenticeship and are created by commission, showing the marks of their owners’ family seals-—in this case, the image of a goddess akin to Callisto on the belt.

The N'Dali

“Figure 3 shows us the face of a N’gali woman. With fine beautiful features, the N’dali’s caucasian skin is surprisingly resistant to the elements and heat. The skin provides for N’dali women a convenient canvas for personal expression. While the facial tattoos of many women accentuate their golden eyes and provide pure decoration, the tattoos on their arms tell metaphorical tales of very personal narratives and relationships (in the case of this woman, an homage to the master craftswoman who taught her dragonskin hunting and curing). The hair is arranged in a complex construction of loops and curls, reaching ever higher heights as wearers try to outdo each other to the astonishment and subsequent duplication of their peers. It could never be said a N’dali woman is not vain.”

The N'Dali

Pink Funk

Pink Funk

There is definitely something sexy about a girl with an attitude and a pair of leather pants. ~ Eliza Dushku

Pink Funk

LeeZu Baxter does it again—making something so drop-dead sexy that I can only stare at myself. First the top, which was released a couple weeks ago. She combines a drapey bodice barely clinging to the body, held on by a zippered collar and wonderfully textured in her inimitable way. Then there are the leather pants, integrated with the boots and textured with a stylistic contrasting leather. Honey, does my ass look TOO wonderful in these?

Pink Funk

Atomicsparkle Skytower has released a new set of skins. One of the more beloved skin makers on the grid, she offers this set with its full lipstick on tattoo layers. I opted to don a full wavy style from Queue Marlowe, who keeps threatening to come out with more hair soon (once she recovers from her whirlwind trip to Europe). My eyelashes, from Viola Leigh, have little specks of glitter.

Rusty

Like this ensemble I put together for a little Mad Max. With a couture jacket from LeeZu Baxter over a top from Calyn Canning and a little skirt I had from Saeya Nyanda, and I have something cooking here. This girl is tough and sexy. Actually, right now I am reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson and this girl reminds me a lot of Core.

Rusty

I really worked on this look, decking myself out in jewelry from ROZOREGALIA Braveheart—especially a great multiple piercing that is modifiable. My edgy hair is from Emelie Carter (I love these with the tattoos) and my sleek and sexy skin is from esra Noyes, who offers skins that are more glamorous and strongly made up for women who want a bolder look.

Rusty

My pal Rand pointed out these boots to me and they were the basis of the whole look. From the safety pinned socks over the laced up cuffs, to the nod to Victorianism, these boots from Tera Gearz are win-win all over. They could go from steampunk to retro apocalypse in a snap and might even look good with jeans.

Your Brother’s New Girlfriend

Sometimes holidays are full of stress because you will be meeting new people who are significant to people who are significant to you, and you feel obligated to like them. Take for example, when your little brother brings home his new girlfriend, Siobhan. He has spoken so enthusiastically, so lovingly of her, you really want to like her. He says she likes the poetry of Mary Oliver, cardamom in her coffee, obscure tango music she finds on the internet, and crocheting purses. You’re not sure what to expect.

(And of course, your brother has never been known for his taste in women. Remember the French major who nervously chewed her fingernails to the quick and ended up quitting school because she owed so much on parking tickets she couldn’t pay tuition? Or the weightlifting physical therapist who told him to “man up” and told him to drive himself to the emergency room when he had been throwing up for two hours from food poisoning? Or the girl who sold Peruvian hats and sweaters in a head shop and argued with your mom about the difference between sweet potatoes and yams? Clearly the poor girl has a lot to live down.)

Your Brother's New Girlfriend

She arrives somewhat shy and sweet, bearing a gift for your mom of Belgian chocolates she brought back from a recent trip to Europe. When she says hello to you, you notice her breath does smell sweetly of cardamom, and her blue eyes are captivating. You approve of her pretty velvet dress from Ivey Deschanel. Its lush fabric and textures speak to the season, and she looks very demure—that is until she turns around and you see her dress is cut deeply down the back to show off her tattoo from Jesseaitui Petion. Your boyfriend nudges you as you both watch her walk by and whispers in your ear that he thinks you need a tattoo, for which you swat him. Her pumps made by Pixieplumb Flanagan are pretty and festive with bows in the back. Clearly she dressed up to impress her boyfriend’s family. Minus the low cut back, you wholly approve of her appearance.

Your Brother's New Girlfriend

She is not overly made up. This is intentional as she wears a skin from Toast Bard, which is usually minimal and very human and girlish despite being hand-drawn. She’s just not that kind of girl, you find out, as you all chat over hors d’oeuvres and find out she majored in Mathematics and currently works for a start-up research company. (Your older brother is impressed.) Her hair from Lamb Bellic, though showing dark roots, is clean and nicely kept with a bobby pin and suits her look. (He once had a girlfriend with dreadlocks—need we say more?) She eats everything on her plate and doesn’t pick around like the Gap manager your brother brought home last Easter who spent way too much time extolling the virtues of  jeans. (“Who doesn’t eat ham on Easter?” your mother complained in the kitchen while you were scraping her dish into the garbage.) She responds thoughtfully to questions, sits with your brother but doesn’t hang on him, patiently looks at the kids’ crayon drawings, and doesn’t bring up politics or religion.

Your Brother's New Girlfriend

As she leaves that evening with hugs and goodbyes, a plate of leftovers to take home in her hands, you feel a twinge of anxiety. You realize it’s no longer whether she passes your test. The question is, will your family pass muster with her?

Blood and Sand

Everyone’s a romantic, especially the tough girl with the heavy eyeliner and shirt sleeves rolled up. She’s romantic because she believes wearing one’s toughness on the outside makes a difference.

Blood and Sand

That’s why our girl wears a romantic film t-shirt made by Darling Monday—Valentino’s “Blood and Sand.” I love this series of t-shirts. Usually you find them with silly sayings or bold and rather cliched graphic artwork. This set has movie poster artwork, “silkscreened” on with a distressed worn appearance. The art is compelling, the titles are fun, and the shape is great. I like the rolled up sleeve, though it doesn’t work well with AOs—something about that attachment point—the shoulder–just messes things up and attaching it to the pec didn’t help. I wish the t-shirt itself had a cleaner edge so the prims could just not be worn.

Blood and Sand

Smokey eyes are provided by Hart Larsson, who has given us a much edgier set of skins with his Dafne set. I had a hard time climbing into this skin but once I got it, I got it and really loved it. (And you’ll probably see more of this skin very soon because I am really getting into it.) He provides a very plain eye or a very smokey—almost raccoon eye–with this set, and a very sparse eyebrow, so the skin seems naked either way—either in its minimalism or its exaggeration—which makes our girl even more romantic. Hart’s work is, as always, a piece of art.

I love this hair from Mirja Mills. It’s well shaped, cute, coy, and youthful. Mirja pays attention to the details on this one, making little curled strands out of prims around the nape and ears, running dark to the roots. I fell in love when I put it on.

Stranger in a Strange Land

If you’re wondering if I know this good looking guy, I sure do. Bram Ellison has been a friend of mine for quite a while, and while his avatar’s attractive, it has more to do with his personality than how is avatar looks. Generous, kind, intelligent, and gentlemanly to a fault, Bram is the kind of guy you are honored to have in your friends list. It doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eye ;)

“I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally I became that person. Or he became me.” ~ Archibald Alexander Leach, aka Cary Grant

Stranger in a Strange Land

On September 19th, 2006, I logged in to Second Life for the very first time. Until the exact moment my avatar appeared I had never heard of a virtual world and had no idea I had just entered one. I thought I was signing up for an online class. Surprise!

Since part of the purpose of the guest blog is to talk about how we developed our persona, I thought you might want to know just how embryonic I began. I had never even been in a chat room! So the realization that all around me were 3D representations of real people talking and interacting in real time was a bit overwhelming. “Dude. You are sooo not in Kansas,” pretty much summed it up. But I decided to stick around to figure out where the heck I had landed and if there were flying monkeys involved. Turns out there were, and one of them was me.

 Stranger in a Strange Land

My first take on the place was that you weren’t supposed to be yourself at all, and I was shocked when people kept asking personal questions. I mean look at the name: “Second Life.” It practically screams, “Try something new!” So I set out to define who I wanted to be in my second life. That was too lofty a goal, so I settled for WHAT I wanted: a boat, and to not look like I was begging for bananas.

I got a small boat to live on and was a happy lil’ Jimmy Buffett-blaring simian for a while until I began to get handy with the shape tools. There are 77 selections in 9 categories and there’s a bit of work involved in getting to know and use them well. But you have to start someplace, and the person I picked to emulate for physical cues was Cary Grant. The man just oozed style, and the better I got at shaping the more I appreciated his taste and grace. I started paying more attention to clothes, skins, accessories, and hair. (I also found out you could buy shapes! Oh well.) But through all the Cary channeling, I always came home to the boat, beach, and Buffett.

Stranger in a Strange Land

What you are seeing in these pictures is my culmination of the two styles. Flick Carlucci took these photos at very cool sim called “Virtual Decay.” She’s got a great eye and is fun to work with. No matter what I wear from tux to tennis shoes, I’m all about the best possible design and texture. (Read, picky as hell.) I like simple classic colors and styles with a casual slant and the shirt/jacket combo and the jeans from AOHARU fit the bill nicely. The boots are my favorites from Jeepers Creepers. The shape is still my own creation and I think the Redgrave skin suits it well. The hair is from Truth and I totally dig it. Oh, the sweet Rickenbacker M330 guitar is from Nortique Guitars. Now here we are four years in. I’m still on a boat and I know who I am. Jimmy Cary Grant Buffett, aka Bram Ellison. Or maybe he’s me. ;)

Little Libertine

“Spitting in a wishing well
Blown to hell… crash
I’m the last splash
I know you, little libertine.”

~ Cannonball by The Breeders

‘Cannonball” is a song I heard a lot in grad school—I had a roommate who ran around in her Doc Martens, blasting Cannonball on her stereo and passionately lecturing me with her hybrid Oxford/American accent about the articulation of snake spines as she cradled a skeleton in her pale hands. Her name was Kate. Kate, whose pet snake’s name was Nate–Nate the Snake.

Little Libertine

Kate would have worn this outfit, no problem. She was not goth but she liked to show off her small shape and pale skin. This new dress from Babyhoney Bailey—it could have gone two ways. With its great ruffles at the neckline and around the skirt, its sexy girly spaghetti straps, I could have dressed it up with stockings and heels, but it was so perfectly Kate, I found Gospel Voom’s Docs in my inventory, pulled on stockings from Canimal Zephyr, and headed out to the club.

Little Libertine

I put on dark lipstick. Now, Kate was not always a make-up wearer but when she did, she liked a dark lip to offset her porcelain skin. This makeup from Tuli Asturias is perfect. Her dark hair was perpetually a mess—the humidity in North Carolina did her in, so this hair from Kavar Cleanslate pretty much fits the Kate bill.

Warrior Woman

I like to feel my power in SL. I am not talking about social power or financial power or physical power—I am talking about my feminine power. It goes beyond sexuality to something deeper—the power of knowledge, acceptance and peace.

Warrior Woman

Teklili Tantalus has a good vision of power and complexity as represented by his otherworldly work. If you take a good look, you will see each prim is positioned perfectly, each texture considered carefully. The fit of the pieces on my avatar was damn near perfect (once I sized it up a tinch), which means Tek is building on the avatar rather than on a mannequin—no small task doing that. His work is a testiment to expertise and skill.

Warrior Woman

What is also terrific is that the pieces come scripted with metal-changing and gem-changing features. A whole palette of colors and color intensities can be chosen and typed in on command to change your piece from silver to black to purple to orange and mix them up.

Warrior Woman

Tricky Boucher’s Alyson skin, while seeming somewhat girlish on first view because of its freckles and very fresh skin and lips, still lends power to this look with the darkly shaded eyes and powerfully drawn body.

I also show Jesseaitui Petion’s tattoos here. He has been a leader in tattoo-making in SL for quite a while and with reason. He understands that not everyone wants a full body tat nor do they want a black and white photo. Sometimes it’s about replicating what will be meaningful and look good on a body. I wear three tats layered here—a celtic moon on the back shoulder blade (I *love* shoulder blade tats), a little Taurus symbol on my belly and tribal-style tats on my arms. You won’t often see me in tats but if you do, they will likely be his.

Finally this incredibly wonderful short hair from Komari Mai made as a set for the Crazy Arse Hair Hunt that is still going on. It comes with two other hairs that are more “crazy” than this one. This hair is short, fierce and excellently textured. Were it available in other colors I would gladly buy the fat pack. I am guessing it looks great on men too. Go FIND this hair before the hunt ends.
