Perfect Autumn Day

It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. ~ P.D. James

Perfect Autumn Day

I remember a perfect autumn day when I was in high school and the leaves were falling to the ground and we were doing marching band practice and Tom Garvens was ahead of me with his saxophone, marching through the leaves in the perfect golden light of an autumn afternoon and the air was dry with a hint of the menace of winter and the rhythmic crunch crunch of the marchers was mesmerizing.

Or another day when I was in grad school when I was taking the bus from one campus to another at Duke and the wind blew up and took the leaves in big swirls like some movie, blowing them as a frame around the scene of the chapel as we departed.

Did you know my blog was supposed to be an exercise in writing? Let me write about the outfit, which is something I definitely would have worn on that day at Duke. First the jacket from Rob Moonites, a definite win as it has menswear styling but it’s sized for women. I love the tweed texture, how he has done the inside with a checkerboard plaid, how he has shaped the lapels. I wore a suit like this (thrifted from Goodwill) all autumn with everything.

Perfect Autumn Day

A scarf was frequent as well. This one is from Pixel Chrome. And I wore a t-shirt underneath until it got colder, and then it was a sweater. This one from toraji Voom is ideal. Jeans were always old and scuffed—poor grad student, dontcha know. Dick Wiesel provides these artistically grungy jeans (almost like someone had doodled on them during a particularly long lecture about postmodern theory–heh). The funky fringy boots from Kao Sands are de rigueur for the smart grad student–flat heels for walking all over campus, fringes for that bit of Bohemian flavor that is so important.

This fresh skin from Julliette Westerburg has a little autumn briskness to it in the pretty blush on the cheeks. Autumn Hykova (perfect name) provides this lovely wavy hair with a color change knit cap topping it. All I am missing is my book bag (which usually got left in my office in the basement when I was just out strolling for a breath of fresh air between classes—it was too damn heavy).

Delicious autumn!  My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.  ~George Eliot

Spring Elegance

We found crocuses poking up in the front yard yesterday, which means there is no turning back now. Snow can’t fall anymore, darn it! Keep bringing out Spring collections, designers, and Nature is sure to hear you.

Spring Elegance

Sissy Pessoa brought out her Spring collection a couple weeks ago and with it, a true ray of sunshine. Here I show a more traditional piece in Sissy’s collection—a ballgown. I chose the green because it is a favorite color and this richly tinted olive green elegantly stands out among the pinks and blues so many favor.

Spring Elegance

Monicuzza Babenco has come out with a new set of skins and once again, they are gorgeous. With her distinctly Italian aesthetic, she has created a luscious sexy skin with a variety of make ups and looks.

I show it with a newer set from Tiffy Vella. Tiffy is emerging as one of the better jewelry makers in SL, combining great textures with exquisite tiny prim building.

One of my favorite teachers in high school was Ms. Mathews, who taught forensics and English. She had her wavy hair cut asymmetrically, she smoked, she wore Chanel perfume, she taught me about Mother Jones and Louis Vuitton (at a time when LV was not mainstream).

This outfit from Geryn Sloane reminded me of her. The dress, done with an eclectic texture, has a sexy off-the shoulder sleeve, ingeniously created with sculpty prims. The skirt flows gracefully and swirls around the legs with grace. It’s the kind of eclectic dress Ms. Mathews would have worn—sexy, a wee bit hippie.

Autumn Hykova is cranking out hair. This cute ‘do was a find in the Poop Hunt on Dove Swanson’s sim. I love its shape and the sweet messy curl that goes towards the face. It was more than generous of Autumn to hand out such a well done piece but sometimes it’s a benefit to a creator to do that. I certainly went back to her store and spent money after seeing the pieces she gave out.

Saiyge Lotus has made some terrific and out of the ordinary jewelry for Balderdash. I have always loved eclectic jewelry. I have a necklace similar to this one in my personal real life jewelry box, with charms and findings hanging off it. I was delighted to find this in world.

The t-strap shoe is a classic. Tesla Mills has created an updated platform sole version, elegant and fun. The “Redhot” name for the color is entirely appropriate and the texture is dead on leather. Wow!

This is for you, Ms. Mathews!

I recently met with Gentle Heron of Virtual Ability, Inc. in world at my villa. We had met at SLCC and found we liked each other a lot and had a lot to share. Gentle’s organization was one of the first winners of the $10,000 USD Linden Prize. In collaboration with a number of residents, including my friend Pecos Bill, Gentle has raised the bar for non-profits in SL.

We specifically meant to discuss fashion for members of her group–people who are disabled and live in SL. They have various concerns—how do you wear a prim skirt if you are in a wheelchair and it hangs down, how do you dress if you are sight impaired, how do you seek the support of creators in world and bring awareness? Gentle estimates that 20% of our residency has some form of disability which hampers them in using SL. That’s a lot of folks who find enjoyment and fun but just need a little help and since I know a little bit about prim skirts, I wanted to help. We had a great meeting.

Business Time

To meet with Gentle, I wanted to dress appropriately for business. While she is an open-minded lady and actually a lot of fun, I wanted to show her how much I respected her work and her group by making my avatar reflect my seriousness (and my fashion savoir faire).

So I chose this classy outfit from MEB’s 2009 Fall Collection. While MariaElena Barbosa uses photo sourced textures, she does so with skill and elegance. She has combined sculpty cuffs and collar in a manner that makes the silhouette of this blouse sharp and stylish. And the slacks look tailored and rich.

I will note that she includes the pair of shoes she shows in the panel photo with this outfit. I purchased another outfit where she showed boots in the photo and received shoes instead, which I found disappointing. MariaElena needs to work a little on truth in advertising.

Autumn Hykova’s appropriately-named “Posh” was a perfect accompaniment to the outfit along with Pulse’s fresh Valeries Wheat/Blush skin. I accessorized with Cora Lu’s Steel Spikes for Paper Couture and of course, my favorite slingbacks from SKGShoes, the Alina Slingback Pumps.
