The Darker Side

To enter a fantasy world means, sometimes, to enter a world of darkness and grief. It’s actually really about the emotional depth, the passion of touching that which is most frightening, succumbing to the.. well.. inevitable.

The Darker Side

This ensemble might be perfect for such a time. First, the dress is by Avrele Guisse. I have had the pleasure of watching Avrele’s development as a designer—her line exists under the umbrella of House of RFyre. Avrele has pushed her abilities and aesthetic over the year she has been in SL. She recently released this gothic dress under my nose, one of her best, in my opinion. She did all sorts of things right with this, from the great use of a draped texture on the skirt with shifting repeats, a sheer mesh bodice, and a sexy low cut back with a provocative spine decoration.

The Darker Side

I paired it with this pale skin from Keiko Morigi of &Bean, one of her offerings for The Potter’s Field. With its blue eye and cateye liner, black lips and delicate shading (especially under the eyes and around the lips), it’s a painterly representation of a gothic look. It’s certainly not for everybody, but for those who like a more deathly look, they can’t go wrong with this romantic skin.

Dance Me to the End of Love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I’m gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance Me to the End of Love

There is something so romantic about a dark song about love until death. This song seemed a perfect accompaniment to Babyhoney Bailey’s offering for the Potter’s Field, which will be going on from July 24 – August 24–an artistic and design challenge to some of the grid’s younger and more interesting designers based on a dark theme. This dress is a beautiful and dramatic piece from Babyhoney Bailey, built from a foundation of simple but well done system pieces accompanied by dramatic prims including a glowing monocle.

Dance Me to the End of Love

I wear the ballerina boots Babyhoney offers for the dress (at a mere 44L!) because they are actually pretty. I was never in love with this weird contorted shoe shape (that is as painful looking as foot binding),  but for this ensemble it works. Babyhoney also offers the outfit as a lingerie set complete with parasol (because it’s rainy in those dark romantic other-lives). I was particularly impressed by how she used the system skirt layer to make a bottom for the bodice—ingenious!

Dance Me to the End of Love

Finally, the skin is also from Babyhoney Bailey. Her skins are getting more refined as she gets more experience. I like the asymmetrical nature of this skin—the mouth is slightly uneven, the mascara tears streak down crookedly. The whole look is enhanced by a huge hair from MiaSnow Myriam that may no longer be available.

Black Orchid

I read a lot about the day to night look but don’t see a lot of it in SL. Come on. We don’t have to leave our offices to go to an evening party. And how hard is it to just sift through folders to find something? No wrinkles, no messing around.

Black Orchid

However, it’s an intriguing thought, and LeeZu Baxter gives us an answer with her Elisabeta jacket and dress. I show first the jacket over a pair of her BritPants. Clearly LeeZu has copped some textures from the BritPants and there is nothing wrong with this. In fact, it provides a consistency through LeeZu’s collection and allows us to mix and match, as I have done here, putting her very groovy pants from April, 2009, with this new top.

I love how the top slips up around the buttock on the right side—very sexy. And the fins on the top echo the fins on the pants. The neckline is graceful and leads to a sexy deep cut back.

Black Orchid

I set the look up with a skin from Minnu Palen. Minnu’s skins are truly “model” skins. They look best in a well lit environment with glamorous accoutrements. The dramatic eye make-up, the matte skin, the glossy full lips and the absolutely stunning eyebrows make this the model look, as Minnu has always intended. Do we all need to walk around SL looking like models? No. But if this is our desire in this second life, this skin will take you there.

Black Orchid

Switch to nighttime and Minnu’s skin becomes less a statement of prettiness and more a statement of boldness. I show here the Elisabeta gown from LeeZu in its full glory. Again, we see the same top but this time it wraps around in a graceful silhouette with the slim brocade skirt and fish tail prim skirt. The once casual-seeming cuffs bunched around the wrists are now airy.

Black Orchid

Most brilliant is the bustle with its big dark almost prehistoric flowers bunched around the back. The low cut back, once just sexy for day time, is now elegant and the entire silhouette is complex but not fussily complicated (due to LeeZu’s use of busy textures with muted subtle shades, as I have mentioned before). This is couture at its finest.
