Flower of the Mountain

“…I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. “

~ James Joyce, “Ulysses” (inspiration for Kate Bush)

Flower of the Mountain

What do Andalusian girls wear? Roses in their hair, at their waist, beautiful dresses. This dress from Mami Jewell would suit an Andalusian girl just fine with its bold red color and bright blowsy roses. Mami makes a sheer texture like no other in SL—there are no alpha clashes—it’s pure netting and light and airy in the flexi settings. The system pieces are rendered perfectly, as always. Mami is generously donating proceeds from this dress for Japanese relief—to help folks in her own country.

Flower of the Mountain

My skin is a new one from Diarmiud Miklos. I was struck by the beautiful rendering of the features and the gorgeous collarbone. (These things matter, people!) The hair base is not truly black hair—it’s more dark brown, so I wore a mixed color updo from DBS Heart rather than a straight black. I tucked a rose from Siyu Suen above my ear and donned extravagantly beautiful earrings from Dita Tron.

Flower of the Mountain

You can’t see my shoes in the first two shots but they are under there. (I took off the skirt to show them). A new offering from Nardya Rousselot, they are being featured at the Shoe Fair. Nardya is back in action in SL again, and thank goodness for that. Her toes are the some of the loveliest tootsies in SL and her styling is influenced by her South American life. Check out the great metallic accents on the straps that Nardya so skillfully renders. These are pretty darn hot for any girl, even an Andalusian girl ;)

Stone Rollin’

Fat lady shakin’, backbone breakin’ (come on)
(This girl of mine)
Everything she’s got is movin and hot (come on)
(This girl of mine)…

You don’t call her fat but that girl is stacked
(she’s got my mind)
Everything is wide–she walk with much pride
(she’s got my mind)

There was no way to prepare
Nothing I could see
All I saw was a woman
Walking up to me

~ Stone Rollin’ by Raphael Saadiq

Stone Rollin

There’s a song I have been hearing on KCRW for a few months that finally got released so I can link to it. I have wanted to blog this song for a long time because this is the woman I know a lot of us are, and I know a lot of men love.

I have dressed myself up in a dangerously short dress (to show those great legs) from Monica Outlander. A fuller woman can pull this look off quite well—she has the assets to make a dress like this look hot. Kalnin’s shows, with their versatile HUD, which includes colorways for skin, nails, and the shoes themselves and a full menu for resizing makes this look easy to finish.

Stone Rollin

My shape is from Xme Xue, who produces beautiful sexy full-figured avatars for women who want to be more than stick thin. What’s brilliant is that Hart Larsson’s newest skin, Gaia, fits perfectly over this sexy shape. I wore his skin in V2.6 so I could pile on the layers—hairbase, eyes, and lips—to make this sexy and sultry look. Wild curly hair from DBS Heart completes me.

Stone Rollin

I say, Booty Woman, you turn me loose.
I need to go home, I can’t stand your moves.
You see your high heels are killin’ me
It’s like your bad ass thighs are shakin’ me. (oh yeah)

Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Nicky Ree has *always* been a supporter of Relay for Life. Every year she applies her talents to specially made exclusive dresses sold for Relay for Life with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. In the past and this year as well, she has also backed that up with a personal donation as a sim sponsor.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Nicky chose to color her RFL donations purple or pink, and we are honored to have her beautiful content grace the Ansel Adams sim. Take the Tanya Gown with its rich deep sheen, tweedy print, and gem-like colors. With its sexy plunging neckline and sophisticated silhouette, it’s a beautiful gown for a red carpet.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Nicky was clearly influenced by Frederick Lancaster’s art deco build for her sim when she did this exquisite texture on her Mara dress. Nicky has donated the Mara dress in various iterations over the years, each one more stunning than the next.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Her regular black and white version of this dress is stunning and both Mara dresses come with a long ballroom skirt and a shorter sophisticated skirt.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

For women who like a softer look, Nicky offers pink and fuchsia versions of her Lana Satin and Lace and Tricia Lace gowns. With their sophisticated drama, these gowns highlight Nicky’s amazing talent and background in formal evening wear (her mother owned a custom boutique in RL). Nicky has perfected the lushness of fabrics that would be used in formal gowns, highlighting a woman’s best features and making her feel incredibly pampered and beautiful.

The Eyes Have It

The eyes are the window to the soul. ~ English Proverb

For a while now I have been wearing eyes that I mysteriously tell people were a gift given to me. My eyes, up until now, have not been for sale on the grid, though a select few people have them. I am very lucky to be one of them. What was once my unique privilege will now be available to everyone.  Ikon Innovia, a professional graphic artist, has been developing these eyes for quite a while and is finally releasing his first sets at Fashion for Life.

The Eyes Have It

To say that Ikon has done exhaustive research on this would be an understatement. He reviewed the placement of eyes in SL, reviewed hundreds of photos of RL eyes, reviewed the movement, the shadowing, the shape. He reviewed the eyes on over 30 different shapes, male and female, and set them against dozens of skins. From the development of the irises to the work on the sclera, Ikon has tweaked each part of the eye with his critical exactitude–for months. Each iteration he has presented to me has been more beautiful than the last. He has finally, blessedly, stopped tweaking and put them out for sale.

The Eyes Have It

And what does it mean to have eyes like this? Early in my time in SL, someone gave me the sage advice that well-done eyes make the look—they are the most important accessory–and I have always followed this rule. People rarely *notice* them but they add the humanness and beauty that makes the avatar perfect. I can’t emphasize enough how important eyes really are to giving an avatar soul. Overbright eyes, oversized eyes, washed-out, pale eyes, and flat eyes all ruin an avatar’s look subtly. Once I received Ikon’s eyes, I never wanted to wear another pair. I have always felt my avatar and photos were enhanced by Ikon’s eyes.

The Eyes Have It

Ikon has carefully developed his eyes so they look realistic from all angles—looking up, looking down, looking to the side as well as looking ahead. He has developed saturation levels in the eyes so that you can go from bright color-washed eyes to an intense tone. (He knows my preference is for a darker tone rather than the washed-out or oversaturated eyes I see so many wearing.) He has made them in several iris sizes so they fit your avatar just right.

After months, nay YEARS, of Harper in his IM box nagging him, Ikon is finally off the hook and I can share his wonderful talent with all of you. Please come to his opening at the Fashion for Life and then keep coming back again and again when he opens his store.

Falln Angel Creations at Fashion for Life

Azriel Demain is not a stranger to Fashion for Life. For many years running, he has contributed generously of his time, content and donations. This year he graciously opted to sponsor a sim. He explained it to me in a chat:

My RL family has had quite a few struggles with cancer, and my close Aunt beat breast cancer just last year! I think she was the first in my family to actually win her battle with cancer, she lost her hair but she didn’t lose her life. And now her hair is growing back curly *chuckles* So, I am all for events like this :)

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

Azriel again has outdone himself with his creations. Offering a wide variety of pieces exclusive to Fashion for Life, Azriel gives his best talents to his creations when he donates them for Fashion for Life on behalf of the American Cancer Society. His rich textures, complex but perfect silhouettes, wonderful prim work all add up to fantastical combinations for a fantasy world.

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

Every single outfit you see here is an exclusive for Fashion for Life. That’s how good Azriel is and how important this is to him.

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

Azriel was kind enough to give me some information:

FallnAngel Creations was created in July of 2006, the same week that its owner and sole creator, Azriel Demain, came into world. An artist by profession, Azriel used his years of knowledge in photoshop and his self-admitted tendency to “never leave well enough alone” to create items that he could not find elsewhere in Second Life. He started off with a small parcel in Euiryeong and a handful of items, his store sharing the plot with his home. By December of 2006 he bought his first sim, Falln Sanctuary. Time flew as his productivity and skill level continued to increase, and soon he was able to move his main store from Sanctuary to its own sim; eventually acquiring two more store sims. He moved his skins, hair and other avatar appearance items to Falln Sanitarium, and his furniture, decor and full buildings found a home on Falln Amusements. FallnAngel Creations has become well known in Second Life for Azriel’s singular vision, productivity, and attention to detail. Whether you seek disturbing horror items, colourful kimono, inventive silks, or something to make your dream a reality in world, you are sure to find it at Falln. Azriel’s talent and sheer range of selections is sure to draw attention and compliments.

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

When you go shopping at Fashion for Life, you will find yourself so immersed in the beautiful sims and great shopping that you might forget why over 200 people volunteered considerable amounts of time and skill to be here. They have not forgotten, however. They know 100% of the funds from their donations go directly to the American Cancer Society though the avatar relayforlife AmericanCancer.

Why we are in Fashion for Life

Dear Readers–

As many of you might know, I have been leading the organization of Fashion for Life for the past three months, and honestly, it’s been a lot of work and stress. Nevertheless, I think it will be worth it.

I decided to take this on for a few reasons: First, I personally know Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin, and I know they were straining under the weight of the RFL Clothing Fair. They truly needed to take care of things for themselves in their “real lives” and when they dropped out, I didn’t want to see all their hard work and the momentum that the RFL Clothing Fair had gained go to waste.

Second, I knew Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society had a top-notch reputation in SL, and I knew that my personal standards for how charitable donations would be collected were in place. I feel very strongly about this. I know SL can be a great place to raise funds, but I think oftentimes it is done poorly. The RFL in SL has the structures in place and a professional representative in world to make sure it’s done right.

Most important, however, was that I knew the cause was a truly worthy one and one that people across the grid from around the world could engage with, regardless of politics or religion, regardless of class or gender. Cancer touches many lives and is something, we have discovered, can truly be combated with research and knowledge, technology and development.

The funds raised during the Fashion for Life will be contributed directly to the American Cancer Society to go towards prevention, support, lobbying and research. And these funds’ positive effect can be seen: When my grandmother had a cancerous tumor in the 80s, her diagnosis was bleak and her treatment painful. I see how much tings have improved now when my dear friend Raven’s father beats breast cancer after chemotherapy without substantial nausea, when my friend Nadya gets effective lung cancer treatment from radiation, when my neighbor Lynne goes into remission from a rare and generally deadly form of blood cancer after treatment–and all of them retain a quality of life much better than my grandmother had.

This is much more than a virtual fashion event–it’s a fund raiser that has makes a tiny little dent in a very big problem. It was worth it to me. I hope it’s worth it to you to join us and enjoy the beautiful and hard-made creations of over 190 designers and 8 builders.

Harper

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of our missions for Fashion for Life is to have fun, but underneath all the fun is a very serious thing. We are making money for the American Cancer Society because so many people are touched by the effects of cancer around the world. Turn to anyone you know and they will tell you of someone they loved or knew that was lost to cancer.
Many of the designers participating in Fashion for Life are doing so for very personal reasons. A few have been gracious enough to share their stories…
Why we are in Fashion for Life
Five years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time, ten years after my first battle with the disease. Thanks to breakthrough cancer research, the biotherapy drug Herceptin had just been approved for general use after successful clinical trials, and my cancer was treatable with Herceptin. I am still in remission, thanks to this drug. My sister-in-law and a dear friend are both cancer free after Herceptin therapy also. We are the “miracle sisters.” In 2009 I was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma which was treated successfully with surgery. Sarcoma strikes especially hard at children, and most are not as lucky as I was. Cancer research saves lives. I want to help. That is why it is so important to me to be part of Fashion for Life.
~ Kerryth Tarantal
Why we do Fashion for Life
My father is treating cancer now. He became large intestine cancer the year before last. The cancer is serious. And, he underwent a difficult operation lasting for several hours. Afterwards, he was treating anti-cancer drug. Cancer seemed to have cured last year. However, cancer relapsed several months later. He came to have to fight against cancer again. I want to help my father. Therefore, I wanted always to participate in this “”Fashion of the life”.
~ Saya Littlething
Why we do Fashion for Life
Cancer has touched a lot of lives in my family…from my Grandfather who died of pancreatic cancer to my Father’s colon cancer and my Mother’s recurring bouts with skin and corneal cancer, we’ve experienced the devastation from every angle. Several years ago I had a lump in my breast and I was terrified. Only in my early 30s, I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about anything like this for a very long time. I was so wrong. I did my research and found out how many women AND men get cancer at a very young age. The numbers were mind blowing. I was so fortunate and it turned out to be a small treatable issue, but it’s affected me so much. It’s so important to spread the word about early detection and help to raise funds to combat and finally some day cure this incredibly devastating disease. It’s important for me to do my small part. If everybody does we can change things.
~ Ivey Deschanel
Why we do Fashion for Life
I lost four family members to cancer including my father and my maternal grandmother.  I am grateful for the opportunity  to be a part of Fashion for Life so that I can help to support those working on a cure for cancer to help keep other families from facing the losses my own family has faced.
Adrianna Marquez
Fashion for Life, March 12-22 is SL’s biggest fashion fair on 9 sims hosted by the American Cancer Society and SL’s Relay for Life. Proceeds from all donated items and sponsorships go 100% to the American Cancer Society.
Kunglers at Fashion for Life
Dear Readers–I know I have not blogged in a couple days. I apologize. (And I hate when people put this in their blogs but I have a reason!) Fashion for Life is in full swing for preparation and I have been terrifically busy. I can’t wait to see you all there!
The Kungler sisters, AvaGardner and Barbra, are sisters in RL. Hailing from Brazil, the sisters swap ideas back and forth from their Southern Hemisphere homes to make elegant and sporty fashions for women across the grid.
Kunglers at Fashion for Life
A visit to their store is a peek inside their dollhouse. It’s a home filled with sleek, elegant women wearing the latest fashions in a variety of lush prints and colors. Silk features prominently as does leather. They use some of the most gorgeous prints in the grid, carefully juxtaposing colors for the most pleasing and fashion-forward looks.
Kunglers at Fashion for Life
When AvaGardner learned of the theme of FFL, she IM’d me and asked if she really had to make black and white—she’s only about color. I told her the theme was about going “Beyond Black and White,” so we are guaranteed to see bold and bright colors from both sisters for the FFL donations. Their colors will reflect the support that the American Cancer Society provides for those diagnosed with cancer as well as their families. Their funding of research and programs brings color and life and to an otherwise seemingly hard situation.
Kunglers at Fashion for Life
Both AvaGardner and Barbra have supported RFL in the past and they join Fashion for Life for the first time this year. They will donate four items with all benefits going to RFL but they furthered their support with their donation as VIP Sponsors.
Leather Princess
Some days you just want to run over to the Demonic Empire and listen to some hard rock or industrial and dance with your friends and have a good old time. OK, I have to admit, hard rock is not my thing, but the people at Demonic are as nice as they come.
Leather Princess
Even though I work for RFyre, I don’t generally dress for a Demonic Empire evening. (I just don’t get out that much.) Vixn Dagger, however, has made outfits that will take me to the Demonic and elsewhere. With her well-drawn system pieces, vamp styling (that is sexy but not ridiculous), and great proportion of skin to clothing (in other words, it’s not *all* hanging out but what is looks hot), she sells a sexy leather look for a reasonable price (and she includes with this look shoes AND boots).
Leather Princess
Vixn started out as a lady who sold shapes and eyes. She has quickly ramped up her business and offers a variety of women’s and men’s clothes for goth or club wear in her store. I will admit—Vixn is a friend of mine. And honestly, she is one of the hardest working women in SL. And Vixn knows sexy. When the leather pants are stripped off, this sexy thong and stocking set can be found underneath.
A look like this demands a wild tossed hair. DBS Heart, known for such styles, made this particular beauty with tendrils that curl into the face, softening the face. And what a face—another by Tuli Asturias with its deep dark eyes and luscious dark lips. Beautiful dangling flexi earrings by Elbereth Nightfire finish the look.
