Loving Donna Flora

“No one has ever become poor by giving.” ~  Anne Frank

Loving Donna Flora

The Love Donna Flora event is opening on July 25 and going to August 11 on one sim with over 130 designers. They are each donating at least one item with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the item going to Squinternet Larnia. Many are donating much more. Squinternet has had cancer that has metastisized to her bones and because of her current treatments, her income in SL—which is her personal living income–has decreased while her expenses have increased. Cajsa Lilliehook, concerned for Squinternet’s well being, organized this event.

I first ran across Squinternet Larnia’s work in a small shop in what I am guessing was late 2008. I remember I was impressed by the variety of fashion and the creativity of the creator. She seemed to build each outfit as its own creation—no separate colorations—and she employed broad use of vibrant textures in varying proportions and shapes. She clearly wanted to push SL to match her vision rather than developing a vision from what SL had in its toolbox. She was mostly successful in her work. Her clothing was unique and exciting.

I remember thinking that it must be an Italian creator, and I can’t figure out why I knew that. I suspect it was the daring use of print and the playful approach to design. I remember gleefully buying an outfit that was proportionally tweaked—there were big puffy sleeves and a slim silhouette with a bright crazy print, but it all worked. In SL in 2008, that was exciting—trust me. Not a lot of people were toying with “fashion” as much as just making avatar clothes.

The first time I showed Squinternet’s work in this blog, I photo’ed a beautiful dress of simply system pieces in 2009 (top, glitch, skirt). It was excellent work. The piece holds to this day. (I wore it as I show here and got a few compliments when I went out.) There are no seams, there is proportion in the texture with an elegant color palette and shape. The texture doesn’t deform terribly on wearing (the shoulder straps are STRAIGHT!) and the whole thing makes sense. It takes a whole lot of talent to make system pieces sexy. Squinternet did it.

Loving Donna Flora

Squinternet learned that she had a cancer that had metastasized sometime around the time I was organizing Fashion for Life in 2012. When she signed on for FFL, I had no idea she had cancer. I was contacted by a friend of hers and then her to explain the diagnosis, and of course, I was concerned. I had placed a store for her and, receiving an offer from Cajsa Lilliehook to set it up in Squinternet’s absence, let it become a gallery for photos of Squinternet’s work in SL.

I had two creators that year out due to cancer. One would call me tearfully on Skype, in pain and on heavy medication, to cry about missing out on Fashion for Life. The other, Squinternet, rallied, and ended up setting up her store (and donating funds from her creations), despite the great uncertainty in her life at the time and the medication-induced fatigue and confusion she was experiencing. Leaving both stores there, empty or not, was a tangible reminder to people why they were donating to the American Cancer Society. Squinternet could have kept the news to herself and just ducked out. She decided instead to throw her support behind the effort when she herself was suffering. (Let me note I have many pieces in my inventory that were donated by Squinternet to various charities including Fashion for Life and Hair Fair. This wasn’t the first time she had done this.)

The core truth behind all this, folks, is that Squinternet has been dealing with this a long time. She has been looking down the long dark tunnel of not knowing what is next for quite a while. This is not a sudden diagnosis. I am guessing anyone who has had cancer will tell you it’s not the pain–it’s the uncertainty and the dependence on others that really wears them down, including the financial uncertainty. I doubt that the Love Donna Flora event will cover Squinternet’s expenses from her cancer; chances are, however, it will put a dent in them and give her some peace of mind so she can put her energies to fighting the disease.

You may feel uncomfortable giving a donation to an individual you don’t know. And certainly there are many other creators in SL who have faced difficulties without the same sort of assistance. Both arguments can be made quite truthfully. However, consider that you are simply tipping Squinternet for her fine work on the grid, giving her a bonus for all these years of sticking with SL. Or maybe it’s just kick back for all the things she so generously donated herself.

Or look at it another way: the creators selling you their items are the ones deciding where their income is going. In this case, it’s being donated to Squinternet Larnia. That’s their choice. Enjoy the lovely things they are offering. Dig in and go shopping!

I would like to give kudos to Cajsa Lilliehook who personally organized Love Donna Flora. She has undertaken a Herculean task—I would know as well as anyone. It’s a tireless, thankless job with no compensation. Lots of people have a list of “shoulds”  and “great ideas” that turn out to be ridiculously time-consuming and ineffective. Many have unsolicited advice and criticisms to offer. And some just like to create drama or pull attention to themselves. It’s not fun. A big thanks goes to Cajsa for doing all this.

Let me gush about the new Radiohead album, which has nothing whatsoever to do with fashion but has everything entirely to do with my happy mien. (Came out while I was busy with other things….)

I am listening to it while I show this entirely elegant gown from Su Scarmon. Su uses some photosourced textures but she uses them skillfully to created gowns that are lean and elegant. She has excelled with this one showing an asymmetrical neckline and back tied with a bow and a thin little belt. The contrast of the top to the bottom adds to its elegance and sets it apart from more standard monochromatic gowns.

I show it with a glowing skin from Nena Janus. The skin suits my shape and has beautiful makeup and details. My eyes, it is now finally revealed, are another masterpiece by Ikon Innovia. And my earrings are a lovely color texture changing set from Squinternet Larnia, who provides gorgeously crafted costume jewelry to women around the grid.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

French fashion has always been the cornerstone of the industry. France is the home of couture, of elegance, of clothed sexuality. It’s also the home of Morea Decosta, the owner of Morea Style.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

Morea Decosta represents her vision in translucent flowing prims, delicately decorated textures and seductively designed system pieces. Morea, like the finest French couturiers, understands a woman needs to feel sexy and needs to feel light, sensual fabrics against her skin. She also understands a woman wants to show off her best features.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

She also recognizes that a woman needs different looks for different occasions, so she doesn’t only provide dramatic ball gowns. Cocktail dresses and pant suits also feature in her fashion, all carrying the same stamp of sensual elegance and beauty.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

Morea Decosta has participated in Fashion for Life for several years. This year, Morea Decosta decided to donate for a store space at Fashion for Life but she generously added a personal donation to become a VIP Sponsor. She did this because she knew many would see her brand and because she knew contributing to the American Cancer Society through this program insures all donations go directly to the ACS without passing through anyone else’s hands.

Being an “Icon”

I had the distinct pleasure of being featured in an article in Avenue Magazine as a “Fashion Icon.” I was lucky enough to meet  Rusch and Jesika, the owners of the magazine, face-to-face when I attended the SLCC both years. They are an amazing couple—warm, kind and whip-smart. I was flattered they thought enough that they had me do an interview for their publication. Then I got to meet the amazing Annough Lykin, who did photographs of me. See her great blog here.

Being an "Icon"

So it got me thinking about what I need to do sometimes to push myself a little harder. I have been taking on shadows and working around the hassles of that, and I share some images I did with you. I am not sure I will do this frequently; my blog isn’t really about my pretty photos—it’s about the beautiful fashions in SL and sharing them with my readers. But let me indulge my vanity today.

Being an "Icon"

Of course, wearing a dress from Nicky Ree always makes me feel beautiful. I was discussing Nicky’s considerable talent with another designer the other night and we both agreed Nicky simply has some of the most beautiful texture work on the grid. We also agreed she pushes the ingenuity with prims in SL. She works within the restrictions of SL and blooms.

Being an "Icon"

I adorn this look with earrings from Squinternet Larnia, of whom I don’t say a lot enough. I visited her store tonight and I was absolutely blown away by the quantity and quality of her content. (Yes, I know I need to blog more of her work.) Her jewelry is exquisite and quite different from lots that is available on the grid—much more “costume” and designer and dramatic than a lot, which I appreciate.

Photographed at World’s End on the Heaven Lake sim.

They say it killed the cat. What’s it gonna do to me?

I sneaked on to the Kittycats sim recently because someone left the door open, and I was curious. I got a peek at the new home of the Kittycats, the cutest breedable kittens on the grid.

Amid the relaxing gardens is a beautiful neoclassical building and inside, the teaser posters for these cute kitties. I have heard from beta testers that they are hooked. One even suggested that she would replace her men with kittens—they are cuter and sweeter. (The Girlfriends have been taking photos of Catty Loon’s beta kittens incessantly.)

I found a couple lounging around on a park bench nearby outside, which is reminiscent of Central Park. The cats are not just breedable—you can buy a couple as companions and never breed them. I could almost like that (and become SL’s first cat lady–great).

I couldn’t help but sneak in some fashion while I was here. I am wearing a great little dress from Shinichi Mathy. Sometimes well-made system pieces with simple prims are all you need, and Shinichi proves this with his elegant, chicly textured sheath and sexy boots from Enktan Gully and LeeZu Baxter.

A slight interruption in the proceedings here to discuss my skin, which is a new offering from Apple May. I thought Apple only did clothing ‘til she approached me to see her work, and I was pleasantly surprised. (I say that because clothing makers seldom are able to make the leap to doing skins successfully.) The set I saw was subtle—the base has a very neutral lip and no eye makeup. It’s in piling on the layers of Apple’s tattoo layers where it gets interesting. I was able to wear this gorgeous golden lip, a great subtle eyeshadow and lashes (goodbye gray prims rezzing around my eyes!) as I clicked “Add” in V2.4. Right now the ability to wear up to 5 layers is restricted to v2.4 as far as I know. (It’s worth downloading. I found V2.4 much less clunky then previous versions and it was incredibly stable for me, which is a huge win.) I give Apple a thumbs up and suggest this skin for women who want something not so showy.

When is the Kittycats sim going to open? I hear sometime in January. Guess it’s down to sitting and waiting outside with this darling kitten. (Notice he’s blinking—awww…)

(I really have to say that the cuteness thing is unnerving for me. I don’t pull it off well. But the kittens really ARE cute—believe me on this.)

Feeling Beautiful

Today I got up early, made pancakes, watched the tail end of a movie, then drove to the salon for some pampering. I got my hair cut, colored and highlighted and a manicure, and I felt just gorgeous when I left. What is it about these moments of self-transformation that make us feel so wonderful? Is there some beauty spa endorphin rush someone hasn’t discovered? Maybe it’s those relaxation candles they have (though they never work quite that well at home.)

Feeling Beautiful

This dress from Elettra Gausman also gives me that same kind of charge. With its great faux animal print (looks kind of Filter Forge), the dress is well made with the texture logically carried out through the bodice, into the skirt and the sculpty shoulder piece. Elettra gives it a sexy cut up the side and wraps the torso with the edge line to make the waist look even smaller. It’s great design. What I really like about Elettra’s work is that she creates a brand new item with each thing. I never see motifs or templates repeated. She doesn’t make one dress and then 12 color variations of it. Each piece stands out on its own and when she shines, she really shines.

Feeling Beautiful

I have donned a new hair from Mirja Mills that creates movement and drama in this photo. She called it “Windblown,” and it really is. Nena Janus’ elegant and sexy skin completes the look with bright red lips.

Feeling Beautiful

I love these new shoes from Kalnins with their strappy silhouette. These have to be my favorites they have offered yet, and they provide their own sort of endorphin rush.

Moonlight Serenade

Glenn Miller’s band was playing “Moonlight Serenade” on the bandstand when Veronica Lake walked into the room. She stood at the top of the stairs, surveying the room. Her signature blond hair was styled into a sleek pageboy, her beautiful gown glittered in the lights of the club, her lips curled in a self-satisfied smile. The room was hers.

Moonlight Serenade

Ever want to live the movie star dream? Where else but in SL could you? Sascha Frangilli makes it easy with this beatiful gown, complete with feathered cape and glittering textures. Sascha provides, as she always does, a plethora of choices in this gown including several flexi skirt styles (I wear the “sleek flexi skirt”) and three top choices (mine being choice 3). You are given a simple stole and this more dramatic cape as well.

Moonlight Serenade

The skin I wear is a new one from Minnu Palen, made especially for blondes. With its light eyebrows (and honestly, I think light eyebrows are harder to draw right in SL than dark ones) and smooth skin, the best part of this set of skins are the eyes and lips. I love how Minnu has shown the makeup with a bright highlight in the inner corner to pop the eye and a pale shimmering pink lip. Minnu made the original model skins in SL and created a whole culture. They are still gorgeous.

This post is dedicated to my wonderful friend, Jaynine Scarborough. In SL, especially among European residents, she is quite a popular musician. Jaynine recently recorded this song for distribution. In it, you can hear her beautiful voice, her amazing facility with language, and her spirit, which is so strong it comes through digital bits and hits you in the solar plexus.

I had the privilege to meet Jaynine and Lunata Lupino when I visited Berlin two years ago. It is an experience I will never forget, sitting in the back bar of a gallery (very “Beat” aesthetic, built in the 50s and never changed), talking about the day the Wall came down and various other issues. It was an amazing evening for me and I can’t thank Jaynine and Lunata enough. (By the way, Lunata has the most infectious laugh one has ever heard…)

I realize this dress is almost more Argentinian tango than Venezuelan salsa but its elegance matches the sophistication of Jaynine’s singing. This beautiful dress by Squinternet Larnia is elegance defined. From the elegant lace textures (going around to a sexy lace back), tiered skirt going down from a leg slit to the thigh and the strategically placed roses, it is for the woman who wants to make an entrance without being ostentatious. The skirt is especially wonderful, built as it is and so well adapted to the avatar. It creates a beautiful, sexy silhouette.

The chignon is cleverly made with matching roses and is included with the dress (to be worn with a hair base skin). Shoes were also included, but I opted to show a pair of stilettos from BG Planer just to spread the love around. I show jewelry from Squinternet as well. She has a shop that is overwhelming in the amount and quality of content. It is almost too much candy.

And view the lovely skin from Tricky Boucher. The hair base is just gorgeous, the makeup smooth and glowing, the proportions of the face elegantly beautiful.

Some days I am convinced we come to SL to create the tragedy and drama we don’t have in our own lives. This doesn’t diminish the pain people truly experience—the pain of the death of a loved one or lost hopes or the pain of physical illness. Rather, we come to SL to make stories that are human-based rather than based on natural causes. That’s why drama has such a good hold here—it’s what propels the narratives in our minds.

Sascha Frangilli’s newest creation—Wicked Swan—is a perfect accessory for your tragic moments. With its huge full skirt, subtly glittering brocade texture, elegant bodice and opera-length gloves, this beauty will fill all your nights with the drama you desire.

Add to the drama Hart Larsson’s newest skin, Candy. These have been several months in development and Hart, who enjoys painting in his other life, has crafted beautiful and evocative skins. This make up in particular, matches the drama ideal. I especially appreciate the subtlety of the pushup option (which I wear here). It’s perfectly appropriate for a bodice such as this to show more lift and this option is not crass or overdone.

Exoticizing the Avatar

In previous posts I have dabbled with creating avatars are other than myself—either male or of another race. In fact, when I show Harper, I am typically showing one other than myself—I am not a redhead and I am definitely not tall and thin. However, when I dabble in such representations, I try very hard to represent the avatars positively or thoughtfully, and sometimes I still have misgivings about what I am doing.

So when I heard about the new Maasai avatar created by Hart Larsson, Clio Cardiff and Bronco Graves, I was really interested in what they came up with. Hart gave us a beautifully rendered dark skin placed over a body that had a thin nose and green exotic eyes with colored markings as makeup. Bronco gave us beautifully made necklaces with pretty colored beads. Clio gave us a shift that would be lovely as a summer dress. All of them are very well made by great SL artisans. However, none of it has any connection to real life Maasai people or for that matter, any people in Africa except the ones in their imaginations. And old Tarzan movies.

And that’s what really brought me short. The exoticization of the “Other’ (if we want to get all postcolonial on this or even worse, the ‘subaltern’) has been going on for years. It’s our means of not connecting with people who live lives different than ours but distancing them. By making them Others, by making them exotic, they become pretty THINGS, not people.

(To straighten this out, by the way, Maasai women typically have wider flatter noses, thicker lips. They wear substantial piercings in their ears as well as necklets that are large round constructions with colored beads but no kewpie shells or feathers. They wear woven cloths wrapped around their bodies (shuka) and sandals. This is when they ARE dressed in traditional clothing—which is not always.  And they never EVER wear colorful markings on their faces. Incidentally, the Maasai happen also to be one of the few groups that still practice female circumcision, which is deeply entrenched in their culture, even though it is illegal in some countries like Kenya. How exotic is that? Screw cultural relativism–it shouldn’t be happening.)

Bottom line? Maasai people are not exotic or fantasy like drows or fairies. They are living existing people with specific political and social concerns, just LIKE WE ARE. Exoticizing a drow or fae is excusable–they aren’t real life people in this world. They are made-up creatures. Maasai people aren’t fantasy creatures–they REALLY exist.

Exoticizing the Avatar

I appreciate the attempt that the creators made to bring a different sort of person into this overwhelmingly white (or rather, deep tan) world. I really dig that. And Hart’s skin, as you see here, is beautifully rendered and would be perfect for say, an African American woman. (However, I have changed the shape he used to show it to one with a more realistic facial structure and I have given her beautiful deep dark brown eyes.) Why did she have to become a Maasai woman? Wouldn’t it be enough to make her African-American?

Exoticizing the Avatar

I have also dressed our beautiful woman in an outfit of pure class. Think Kathleen Battle here or Rita Dove or.. ha, Michele Obama! Our beauty wears a gorgeous dress from Su Scarmon. What catches my eye the most about this dress is the silvery-gold texture. Giving off this kind of luster is not easy in SL, especially for a fabric. Su really captured the richness of a champagne-colored satin.
