Awareness

There are a lot of functions centered around “awareness” of this or that thing in SL lately. Personally, I’ve attended a number of these “awareness” events and am shocked at how little they do to actually make people aware other than putting it in their title (and, to be honest, I wonder if – in some cases –  it is a ploy to boost business by saying it is “for” something.) There is so much more to say than “be aware” and give it lip service. Let’s go beyond the virtual and get real about this.

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s not about being aware that breast cancer exists—we know that. It’s about being aware about your risk, about treatments, about the need to fund research to help treat and eradicate it. (Meanwhile I will show some virtual breasts—I can’t skip the picture/review portion of this blog and perhaps it will catch people’s attention.. heh heh).

Here are some quick facts. (Please note I have linked all my sources—please check them. It’s important to think critically about what you read. I am not just shoving some “statistic” in a notecard without proper attribution to a credible source.)

  • Breast cancer happens substantially more in women than men. But.. it does occur in men.*
  • It is estimated that 207,090 women will be diagnosed with and 39,840 women will die of cancer of the breast in 2010* Death rates have been decreasing since 1991, however. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.*
  • Based on rates from 2005-2007, 12.15% of women born today will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast at some time during their lifetime.*
  • In 2010, there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.*

Wanna get even more real? I recently had my first mammogram. I did it on the instigation of my friend, Raven Pennyfeather, who knew that I was overdue for my first exam and whose father was recently (successfully) treated for breast cancer himself.

Since some of my readers may not have had this valuable exam, let me explain to you my experience. My breasts were each placed on a platform and pressed down by a clear PETG plastic paddle—gently and briefly. (I know so much about the paddle because in my former life I helped manufacture them.) The discomfort was temporary. Ripping off the little band-aids that were put on my nipples hurt the most. The woman who did the exam was fabulous—she has seen boobs all over on every age and size of woman and man. I felt no shame at all.

I had put off getting it the exam done because I feared the discomfort and the embarrassment. And deep inside, I feared finding out something negative—my grandmother had breast cancer. It was very quick and easy and my test results were normal.

Many of you out in the metaverse are doing what I did—putting off this very important and easy exam. Why? I told you it’s not bad. (Really! It’s not!) The person doing it was very experienced and very helpful. And while my insurance paid for it, there are many places that offer this exam for free in the US. Not having insurance or the means to pay for one is NOT an excuse! Click here for more information about free mammograms in the US.

I know the mammogram is not the sole means of detecting breast cancer. I do frequent self exams and also visit my doctor for an annual exam (while I get my annual pelvic exam and um, yeah.. I won’t be blogging THAT). I am also aware of my risk for developing breast cancer. Being female and past a certain age (*ahem*), it’s already increased. Do YOU know everything you need to know?

There is so much more to say that I can’t cover in this blog, but at least I put out something of substance and value. Want to know more? Click through on these links:

Feel Good

SLCC is over but I didn’t miss it all. I heard from many friends who are in Boston and got to see Philip’s speech (from the horse’s mouth rather than through everyone’s analysis). I even got to do a presentation, though this time it was from THIS side of the screen rather than from the dias as last year.

Feel Good

I feel a bit better about SL after hearing Philip speak. I think I needed to know they were actually setting down a list of priorities and goals for those priorities. Some people are not going to be happy, but as the old adage goes, you can’t make everyone happy all the time. I feel pretty good about things just knowing something is being done, so I “feel good.”

That being said, have you been to Pixel Dolls lately? Pixel Dolls was one of my first indulgences in SL, and it proves the test of time. I got this dress yesterday and love it. Dolce Blackflag  reuses and reconsiders her beautifully drawn system pieces in different combinations and with a variety of prims. Her pieces are sexy and Victorian all at once with an abundance of romantic laces, brocades, pearls and buttons. Whereas true Victorian would have the body cinched and covered, Dolce shows off the sexiness of skin and femininity with her fashions. In this dress, she combines a beautifully rendered system piece with black pearls that hold the top barely shut. Lacy sleeve prims are echoed in the skirt,  netting dripping down in an almost ragged fashion. It’s much like a RL fashion collection–she has a definite vision and voice in her work and she uses a set of motifs and styles throughout her work.

Feel Good

I wear with the dress leggings from LeeZu Baxter, who delights us with the same sense of sexiness and fashion. These burlesque tights include chains around the knees (!) and garters that stretch from the thigh to the calf. Boots from Eshi Otawara complete the outfit—one of her own sculpties. She’s selling colored versions of these at the Shoe Fair for an unbeatable price. Can you beat a boot with such a pretty flower and such a whimsical (and structurally unsound) heel? I’d kill myself wearing these in RL but in SL? No problem! It’s all good ;)

Rainy Days

It’s raining out today—a sweet rainy fall day with periods of clarity. The flowers outside are releasing their last burst of bloom. I saw a hummingbird hovering not 3 feet from me, dipping his beak into my impatiens (yeah, explain that—guess he was desperate).

Rainy Days

So today I am cheerfully celebrating beauty with the work of Iki Ikarus. She sent out two skins for her group, and I was hooked. I ran over a few days later and got this gem and one of her cute dresses. With its well-groomed eyebrows, expressive lips, and finely contoured face, this skin is well-drawn and lacks that over-dodged highlighting I see on too many skins nowadays.

Rainy Day

Then I got into the whole purple/pink theme and topped this ensemble with this messy hair from Foam! It’s raining, ya know? Add in a whimsical blossom necklace from Ginza Kohime and a sweet umbrella from Michelle Rail, and we’re done up top.

Rainy Days

I have to admit, the whole rain thing came to me because I have been dying to show these boots for a while. The RetroStars from Coke Dreadlow (who also makes some killer high-tops) are the boots I have wanted since I was a little girl. Tuck these cute socks from sato yifu in and we’re set!

School Days

School’s in. Pencils, backpacks, crushed peanut butter sandwiches, the smell of crayons and chalk. Soon the air will have a crisp edge to it. So school clothes are called for.

School Days

There is something still so cute about the plaid skirt with a cardigan, especially when it’s done in schoolgirl style as tama Clowes has done. This darling set includes a textured tank top underneath and a well done skirt (the prims line up with the system piece excellently).

School Days

This sweet little ensemble needs lots of accessories. I chose this groovy bag from onakagoo Waco at ArtMeter that has art pieces that switch on the closing flap (wearable art). I used Krius Misfit’s jade necklace as a choker—you don’t always have to make SiniStyle sinister.

I made this outfit around Siddean Munro’s hair. She is starting to really kick hair butt (that sounds so wrong but I am leaving it). Her hair coloring “Contraption” (love that word) makes choosing hair color easy. You choose it when you want it and not at the store—and you aren’t left with 20 other hairs in your inventory that you will NEVER wear (*looks at the sky blue, celadon, and amethyst she got in other fat packs that she fears trashing in case she MAY someday need one*). I paired it with Pulse’s very fresh and freckled Climax skin.

School Days

Iki Ikarus’ whimsical socks make the look complete with Fallingwater Cellardoor’s scrunchy flat soled boots in acid green.

First Day of School

Today is the first day of school for many students–around this country, at least. I remember the anticipation, especially when I was in high school and college. I had my clothes all laid out, ready for the first day, the first chance to impress after a long summer, the first chance to wear all those new school clothes.

First Day of School

If I had a cute outfit like this one from Iki Ikarus of Dutch Touch, I would have worn it. With its cute pullover short sleeve sweater and shrug and its sweet little denim miniskirt, it would have been the ideal first day back to school outfit. Iki Ikarus does some really fine work, mixing photorealistic textures with hand drawn work to make her clothing stand out.

First Day of School

Such a fresh look needs a clean skin and long wavy hair. I chose Sabina Gully’s Curly Hair. This cute style has a little bobby pin holding back the voluminous locks. I remember having hair like this in college *sigh*. The skin is from Pulse’s Timeless set–not heavy with makeup.

First Day of School

I paired this with the first pair of sculpty boots I ever bought—the Dunes from Maitreya. They were the most happening thing when they first came out and have borne the test of time. When I first saw them, I realized they were the boots I always wanted but never had—soft scrunchy suede that goes well with jeans or skirts.
