More Spring Flowers

I can see more people have the same idea I do. We’re screaming for spring! (Apologies to all my friends in the Southern Hemisphere.)

Spring Flowers

Today’s visit to a springtime flower garden comes courtesy Nicky Ree. I think she’s in the same state of mind. I show here two sets actually, both using the same pattern from Nicky’s Autumn Dance collection (I bought both—I couldn’t decide.) First the shorter dance dress (which also comes in another version). With the ruffled neckline and flouncy ruffled skirt, this is at once sexy and girlish. The brilliant addition is the solid wide belt around the waistline—it makes the dress go from purely flowery to stylish.

This is the difference between a new designer and an expert—Nicky is able to wrangle her textures and prims into making the look she wants. Flowers go from proportionally small in the top to larger on the prims, the waistline shows as a solid piece even though it extends from the top to the skirt prim, prims are all perfectly placed and textured. Nicky controls what she does—she turns the “bugs” of designing in SL into “features.”

Spring Flowers

Then I show the Dance Gown. With its elegant line, full trained skirt, and detailed wrist it is a breath of fresh air—the first window open after a long winter indoors.

I found what I needed to gently compliment the dress at Maeve Mortlock’s store, Ear Candy. With every piece going for 59L, Maeve makes stocking my jewelry box inexpensive and delightful. Her earrings look like no one else’s—clearly Maeve has a great stash of beads and textures to work with and she uses them with joy. My biggest complaint? The jewelry is copy/no trans. I can’t give gifts. Otherwise Maeve would be making a lot more linden as I pass these baubles out to all my friends.

Spring Flowers

It’s spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.  And when you’ve got it, you want – oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain

I am still rummaging through my closet for things to recommend as gifts for your beautiful lady on Valentine’s. We will get past this evening gown phase soon and get on to the better stuff soon… I promise. But we can’t neglect to understand that ladies want to feel beautiful and want to be wooed and courted for all their feminine graces.

Purple Prose

This beautiful gown from Mimi Jewell would likely set any heart pounding. Imagine opening the folder for this and putting it on… with its graceful neckline complimented by a high collar, its trained skirt, lace cap sleeves, floral motif, and most importantly, sexy wrinkles and highlights showing a woman’s most beautiful curves, this gown would thrill any recipient. It will thrill her partner too with its sexy open back, cut down to there.

Purple Prose

I compliment the gown with a perfect palette provided by Tricky Boucher. Tricky’s latest line—Alyson—shows how far Tricky has come as an artist. With its full sensuous lips (beautifully pink and perfectly glossy), subtlely shaded eyes and perfectly trimmed eyebrows plus the glowing décolletage, this skin is glorious.

Painting the Town Red

For the next week, I will be preparing the romantic half of my readership (that is all of you who need to find gifts for your ladies) to shop smartly. I will specifically be focusing on evening gowns and elegance as ladies like to be given them something to look pretty. (Next week I will show another kind of pretty ;))

Painting the Town Red

In your first shopping foray, make sure you hit Moxie Polano’s Haute Couture. She offers most if not all her dresses transferable. And Moxie makes beautiful evening wear. Here I show a piece she made for her 12 Days of Christmas series, but it could be worn any time because the motif is red roses. In fact, this would be an IDEAL Valentine’s Day gift (*bangs you over the head with the hint*). The skirt can be worn without the prims for a sexy sheath.

Painting the Town Red

Now let me explain why Moxie is the real deal. First, the seams. Her seams are absolutely utterly perfect. Her textures have a beautiful sheen. She makes pieces that women want to wear because they cling in all the right places. And she offers a great value. This dress was very inexpensively priced for what it offers and included great prim shoes.

Painting the Town Red

I am wearing very exquisitely built jewelry from yoona Mayo. Her pieces combine imagination with just amazing tiny prim work and great textures. They are incredibly inexpensive (we are talking 45-65L per piece or set). However they are not transferable, whcih seems counterintuitive for jewelry. What you do is take your honey to her shop, drop 500L on her and she fills up her jewelry box with a LOT.

Finally the hair Kavar Cleanslate has offered for the sale at the Greenies’ Sim. The great thing is he offered all the braids and glowsticks as add-ons, so without them you just have a sexy tousled updo.

All About Business

Lately I have been getting a lot of requests for business looks in SL, especially since Amanda Linden wrote a blog about business appearance.

It’s not impossible to put together a business look here, especially if you get yourself outside the box of black suit and skirt. I am personally tired of that—that’s for lawyers and very uptight librarians. A professional woman can be found in a tailored sweater and skirt with a stylish scarf, as I show here.

All About Business

Betty Doyle has come out with a set of “Vintage Basics,” but I consider them regular basics. The system skirt has a great texture and shape (though for some reason, this one made my rear end look large so I “dieted” a little and shrunk my otherwise perfectly useful skinny skirt shape). And the sweater, with its ideally proportioned knit texture and wonderful sculpty shapes, has enough style to look beyond ordinary but is not outrageous.

All About Business

I accessorized with Tiffy Vella’s beautiful Wistaria set. She has done some absolutely exquisite work with jewelry in SL, combining killer skills in tiny prim building with gorgeous textures. This set comes with this beautiful scarf, earrings, and a ring. (It also has a necklace and bracelets you don’t see here.) And finally I pull out the classic Verve pumps from Onyx LeShelle.

I wear here a skin I custom made at Body Politik. Maximillion Grant and his partner Polly Pavlova didn’t make it for me–I made it myself on their handy dandy website, and I blogged about this wonderful idea. I received news today that they are now letting you customize in-world as well at their “Skin Creation Stations.” So get down to their store in-world—you may catch me there putting another one together.

Tomorrow’s Laundry

A friend of mine had a mom who said, “That dress is so short I can see tomorrow’s laundry.” My own grandmother said, “If it gets any shorter, she will have two more cheeks to powder!” The fun thing is in SL, you can wear the skirt and still get away with it!

Tomorrow's Laundry

Today I am showing ‘tomorrow’s laundry” with a dress from Shiryu Musashi. Shiryu left SL to finish school but he’s back with his luscious hand-drawn textures and exacting detail. Check out the tiny little frog closures he made for the dress on the collar and chest. This dress is short and sexy—the ideal item for looking sexy and cute.

Tomorrow's Laundry

Mouse Mimistrobell is producing like mad—jewelry and now hair. I wore a brilliant blue this time—not my usual color (not even when i am 80), but it just looked so good with Shiryu’s dress. I ran to Cupcake a month or so ago to snatch up her gift sets—what a great idea—a few skins of the same makeup with a dress. Instant makeover.

Tomorrow's Laundry

And the other piece of this complete and great outfit are JB Gazov’s to-die-for boots, this time to the knee. (I showed them short a couple days ago.) He has improved on his old zipped side boots (yes, I have those too—I was shopping JB before he had toes!) and the shape, the style, the colors are all amazing.

Making Cookies

Today’s a day for making cookies.

Making Cookies

I am celebrating my new shoes. (Yes, it turns out it really is all about the shoes… ask Anessa.) I had a chat with Coke Dreadlow, the maker of the puddle jumpers I reviewed a few days ago, and he asked if I had seen his Lo-Tops. Well, no I hadn’t so he kindly passed me a pair. I spent the next hour plus fiddling with them, clicking buttons on the hud, changing colors on the laces and the sides and the tops, joyfully experiencing my new shoes (which fit like they were old shoes).

They started out this spiffy black with white laces, the kind every cool guy wears until he’s 43 (and then at that magic age, they are not so cool anymore). Then I did this preppy punk version with the argyle and the checks.

Making Cookies

I kind of got out of hand with it. I did the koi with flowers with complimentary purple laces. Then I did the .. well.. clown shoes *cough*. I just couldn’t stop.

Making Cookies

It’s all due to the brilliance of this handy dandy super-magical hud included with the shoes. You can click the inside on and change that to polka dots, or click the inside and outside and make them all bunny pink, or click the tongue and laces and make the camouflage or… well you get the picture. The only thing missing is the ball-point penned-on doodles my RL Chuck Taylors had (and the tread traced around on the bottom with the same ball point). Coke has made a fun and functional piece of brilliant art.

Making Cookies

There really is a story about making cookies somewhere in here. I made some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies tonight, reminded by the handy dandy mixer strapped to my leg (complete with beaters). Gosh I love this mixer from PrimtroniCS. I pulled out a wooden spoon and put this ensemble on. The uber-cute jeans were a bloggers gift from Anyusha Lilienthal and the top is one from Cynthia Ultsch I snagged at the RFL clothing fair.

Making Cookies

I bet you are wondering about these robot earrings. I bought the earrings and bracelet at the recent Jewelry Fair because they were whimsical and cool. They matched the shoes in lightheartedness. I saw an artist at a recent art show in Chicago doing prints with robots similar to these. I predict robots are the Next Big Thing. (Haven’t they been saying that for about a century now? Next thing you know they will be telling us we will be talking on typewriters to each other and walking around as cartoons!)

What to Wear to Burning Life, Part 1

This year again, I have volunteered to help move along the fashion portion of Burning Life, which is a very small part of BL overall, and seems kind of superfluous because no one is looking at avatars—they are looking at the amazing builds and listening to the music. However, there is a place for fashion—what people wear to Burning Man is very important. That being said, this is the first in a series (I hope) of blogs about what to wear to Burning Life this year.

BL Part 1

Today’s ensemble is based on anecdotes from RL Burners who have attended Burning Man. The playa is hot and the playa is dusty and you spend a lot of time walking around under the sun. Recommended are hats to protect from the sun, goggles in case of sudden dust storms, and socks and shoes to protect the feet from the alkaline dust of the playa. The rest is left to one’s discretion. One blog says, “Many Burners, both men and women, take the city’s self-proclaimed agenda of ‘radical self-expression’ to mean ‘wear as little as possible.’”

BL Part 1

I have chosen the brilliant Shai Delacroix’ Zambia Safari Swimsuit for the playa. With it’s utilitarian camo bottoms and delectable top, it would suit the playa just fine—light enough on top to keep me cool, tough enough on the bottom to withstand dancing, camping, and general radical self-expression.

Braids are always useful—not so much flyaway hair in the winds on the playa. And the bandanna on top of Truth Hawk’s style can serve as protection or face covering when need be. It also keeps the sweat out of my eyes. I have adorned myself with kikunosuke Eel’s (of Japan Tempura fame) beautiful new jewelry to complete the bohemian look I have going here.

BL Part 1

The boots are the most important. Fallingwater Cellardoor’s Old Boots are my favorite pair. Broken in, reliable, tough, they protect me from the playa dust better than any, and I don’t have to worry about wrecking them. They get better looking with age.

BL Part 1

Walk the playa, take in the sights, be “radically included”:

Poid crossed over!

The Finest Jewelry

Tiny prims are a challenge. If you have never worked with them—tortured a prim down to its eensiest size, you don’t know what it means to work with them. The original master of tiny prim engineering was Random Calliope. Consider this sculpture he did, all 81 prims of it, next to the smallest cube I can make at .010 X .010 X .010.

The Finest Jewelry

No, that’s not a trick of your eyes. Actually, it’s a trick in my inventory—if I am not totally careful when I rez it, the darn thing ends up taking 81 prims somewhere on my sim, and I can’t find it without thorough searching. (And on this Primcess’ land, that’s like looking for a needle in a haystack!)

The Finest Jewelry

This blog is all about the tiny prims. Specifically, Di Yifu’s tiny prims. Di is in the next generation of exquisite jewelry makers after Random, as far as I am concerned. Following in the footsteps of such artisans as Caliah Lyon, Skinkie Winkler, and , Di Yifu brings new art to tiny prims. I am showing here her exquisite Laoris choker and earrings, which she is selling at this year’s Jewelry Fair.

The Finest Jewelry

Unlike Random, who worked exclusively with SL-made prims, no scripts, and SL-made textures, Di has opted to use sculpties and she has made a beautiful texture that rotates in the middle of each one of those little diamonds.

I chose a lovely and simple dress from Nicky Ree—the Kathy gown. It’s the elegance this necklace deserves without overpowering its beauty.

The Finest Jewelry

The hair is from fri.day, a terrific new store on the grid. If I wasn’t open-minded, I would think these were old designers rebranding, since the products, store, and business are so good, especially the hair.

Nonna a Paris

Nonna Hedges is the doyenne of evening dresses in SL. When I first came to SL, a friend of mine took me to her shop and I gasped. Classical music played on the stream, rich woods and silks covered the surfaces, the soft scent of roses and vanilla wafted through the air. I felt like I had entered an exclusive boutique. On the gowns, fine handmade lace covered the bodices, silk with a subtle patina flowed across the gowns.

Nonna’s work has a style like no one else’s–a classical aesthetic rooted in a woman’s intense but banked sexuality. A Nonna woman doesn’t wear bright turquoise, she doesn’t have crunchy curly hair, she doesn’t speak loudly (though she is well-heard). She would never chew gum.

chocolate Nonna

It was with pleasure I received Nonna’s latest creation, perles et dentelle. Nonna has been focusing on Paris lately (as evidenced by her recent store remodel, which features a large version of her Eiffel Tower necklace draped over the walls of the store). Details is the name of her store, and for Nonna it’s all about the details, from the pearl necklace and belt to the barefoot prim shoes (which I don’t show here, but they come with the outfit).

chocolate Nonna

This piece was inspired by her dreams of Paris with it’s subtly pink/pearl lace (notice the ribbon detail finishing off the neckline and sleeves) and its cocoa satin skirt. Finishing off the skirt is a beautiful gradient prim kickpleat. Notice the crinkled rosettes at the shoulders, the pearled belt with the gold buckle, and the prim laces tied criss-crossed and tied in back..

Attention to the Details

Ever have one of those days when you see everything but what you really need to see? I had that yesterday.

I should have known something was up when I logged in and Delora Starbrook and Winter Jefferson both IM’d me at once. Delora said, “You’re in trouble.” Winter said, “I am a little put off…” I thought to myself, oh crap.. what now?

Delora asked to TP me in, so I accepted. I was up in her skybox in front of two sales panels from her store, and she had a cute little silks/dress thing on. She asked me how I liked it. I liked it a lot. Her textures get better with each creation. She builds her prims exactingly and textures them intelligently. I thought she did a nice job and I told her so. In fact, I said, I think one could almost go clubbing in it.

Attention to the Details

She passed back and forth in front of the sales panel and questioned me about my idea. I watched her pass back and forth, admiring the movement of the prims and how cute she was. She TP’d in Winter, and they questioned me further. What did I mean by clubbing? Did I really think it was a good “dress”? As I felt my foot going deeper and deeper into my mouth, I struggled… until I spotted the sale panel out of the corner of my eye and saw the name of the outfit—“Harper.”

Attention to the Details

Boy, did I feel like a dolt. I was camming in on Delora, on Winter, on everything but the words on that sales panel. When I finally realized, seven minutes later, it all made sense. Delora wanted to surprise me, and I ruined it by not paying attention to the details.

Delora has paid attention, however, from the pull of the fabric across the torso to the double belts to the flirty, barely-covering skirts. “Harper” comes in seven colors, including this rich brown and will be released today (Wednesday). I am honored to have this beautiful work named after me.

This hair from Carina Larsen was perfect for the sex appeal the outfit requires. I adorned myself with jewelry from Zaara.

Attention to the Details

The outfit requires either no shoes (for the girl who kneels) or in my case, gladiator sandals from J’s. J’s was the original for toe shoes and still makes the perfect little tootsies.
