The Crazy, Mixed-Up Elf

The Crazy, Mixed-Up Elf

“It’s easy to believe in magic when you’re young. Anything you couldn’t explain was magic then. It didn’t matter if it was science or a fairy tale. Electricity and elves were both infinitely mysterious and equally possible – elves probably more so.” ~ Charles de Lint

The Crazy, Mixed-Up Elf

Once upon a time there was an elf… or a sprite… or perhaps she was just some weird overgrown insect. She wasn’t sure what she was. Bottom line: she had a branding problem. She wished (on this darling wishing well from Sway Dench) that she knew how to reconcile herself.

The problem was this: She had gotten herself over to the Mystic Realms Faire and had a little too much enthusiasm about the items there. Things offered there. There was this fantastic outfit of leaves and stripes from Hadarah Steamer that she had to have because it was cute and it had leaves, right? The mesh fit her perfectly and the textures were to die for as far as fantasy goes as all of Hararah’s fantasy clothes go.

Then there was the dragon halfing set from Kalia Firelyte and perhaps that’s where she took a wrong turn. The wings were so righteous and they flapped! And the tail, with its spines and great scales, wagged as she walked. And the horns had several textures to choose from and could be curled or uncurled at will. It was all just too good to pass up! But how does an elf carry off a dragon tail? (By draggin’ it behind her. Gosh, I crack myself up.)

The Crazy, Mixed-Up Elf

Then there was the pretty jewelry from Plurabelle Laszlo, a set with delicate dragonflies that were dragons, right? So it all fit. And a flit over to the L’Amitie Fall Market for cute fallen leaf sandals from Trippy Fall (because, a leaf, right?) and the look seemed to make a certain amount of sense, but really only to her.

Mimi Coral had a ton of skins to choose from so our confused little elven sprite halfling found a fierce tribal one that echoed the greens of her leafy dress and fierce dragon tail. Sparkling eyes from Constance Daehlie made the look more fantastic. A hop, skip and tp over to the Fantasy Collective, opening today, and she aced herself a gorgeous ‘do from Shylah Honey with a Renaissance braiding on top, like a little crown.

A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters

“Of two sisters one is always the watcher, one the dancer.” ~ Louise Glück

A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters

The Fantasy Faire opens April 21 with nine sims and many great fantasy designers. Kouse Singh, who has always supported Relay for Life generously with her content and time, has produced these two beautiful dresses that I am showing on two beautiful sisters. Each is embellished with red roses at the hips and neck and as usual, Kouse lends her dreamlike imagination to the construction with a laced up bodice, lace sleeves and a flowing skirt.

A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters

My sisters wear the same set of skins from Aida Ewing, the absolutely breathtaking Leah. What I love about this set is the availability of different brows and make-ups. And of course, it has Aida’s perfect touch with classy deep make-ups and a glowing skin, which has been dusted with freckles.

The N’dali

The N'Dali

“The N’dali of the temperate forests and hills of Southern Peninsula of Melanasia are an independent tribe of traders and craftspeople. They are most noted for their fine metalwork and technology in working with exotic creature skins and feathers such as those of the phoenix and dragon. Their people are homogenous with genetic markers such as pale fine caucasian skin, thick dark black hair and most amazingly, golden eyes, which appear ubiquitously through the N’dali people but are known as a rare recessive gene across other populations.

The N'Dali

“As the culture is matrifocal, women enjoy a great degree of independence and power. Free of the pressures of typical patriarchal societies, both women and men flourish as leaders, artisans, nurturers and tradespeople. Some occupations weigh heavier towards one sex or the other but both sexes enjoy the opportunity to choose their vocation. Parenthood is shared, with all children taught the concept of n’dalia, or fidelity to social oneness and community. The people are, overall, very insular and communicate very reluctantly with others except in trade. It could be said that their cultural ethos is ‘G’sip a g’ringen’ or ‘Words are power.’

“As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the N’dali women’s garb is made entirely by local artisans. First, the top and skirt are sewn from treated dragonskin, which is created from a process of steps that range from the original hunt of dragons by specialized warriors to the butchering of dragons and curing of dragonskin by skilled craftspeople. The dragonskin is surprisingly light but flexible and protective—it can withstand high temperatures and resists puncturing. The collars and belt of their garments are fashioned by artisans trained via apprenticeship and are created by commission, showing the marks of their owners’ family seals-—in this case, the image of a goddess akin to Callisto on the belt.

The N'Dali

“Figure 3 shows us the face of a N’gali woman. With fine beautiful features, the N’dali’s caucasian skin is surprisingly resistant to the elements and heat. The skin provides for N’dali women a convenient canvas for personal expression. While the facial tattoos of many women accentuate their golden eyes and provide pure decoration, the tattoos on their arms tell metaphorical tales of very personal narratives and relationships (in the case of this woman, an homage to the master craftswoman who taught her dragonskin hunting and curing). The hair is arranged in a complex construction of loops and curls, reaching ever higher heights as wearers try to outdo each other to the astonishment and subsequent duplication of their peers. It could never be said a N’dali woman is not vain.”

Queen Annalea

Queen Annalea

As the head parson placed the crown upon her head in front of all the citizens in the arena, she felt its weight.. not just on her head but down her spine, running through her body, deep in her soul. As the chains were settled into place, the crenellated horns adjusted, the warrock tails thrown over her shoulders, she knew her lazy afternoon lessons, her idle needlework, her gossip and girlish pastimes—all were gone and over. That was another life and it was far behind her.

She gazed out into the faces of the thousands of people. Her mother, Queen Dendra, gazed up at her from the foot of the stage; her younger brother, Rance, watched her keenly. She thought about the death of her father, King Timmott, in the hands of the enemy.

The head parson announced, “All hail, Queen Annalea.”

The people cheered. “All hail, Queen Annalea. Long live the Queen!”

Queen Annalea

Our queen comes courtesy of June Dion, whose considerable line of inexpensive and amazingly rendered garments is an incredible addition to SL content. This ensemble, part of a set with several colors, includes sculpty belts, ties, and a beautifully textured skirt. Echoed through the garment are Asian motifs all jumbled up in a complicated but beautiful look fit for a young warrior queen.

Queen Annalea

My hair/headpiece comes courtesy of Tekelili Tantalus, whose unique vision provides amazing fantasy wear that includes incredible versatility with a built-in color-changing script that operates most elements separately. Look closely at his textures—they gleam and shine with depth of light and dark. Tek is at the Hair Fair this year, and he will be, without exception, the most amazing and fantastic artist there. Indulge in one of his pieces—they go beyond hair to art.

Falln Angel Creations at Fashion for Life

Azriel Demain is not a stranger to Fashion for Life. For many years running, he has contributed generously of his time, content and donations. This year he graciously opted to sponsor a sim. He explained it to me in a chat:

My RL family has had quite a few struggles with cancer, and my close Aunt beat breast cancer just last year! I think she was the first in my family to actually win her battle with cancer, she lost her hair but she didn’t lose her life. And now her hair is growing back curly *chuckles* So, I am all for events like this :)

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

Azriel again has outdone himself with his creations. Offering a wide variety of pieces exclusive to Fashion for Life, Azriel gives his best talents to his creations when he donates them for Fashion for Life on behalf of the American Cancer Society. His rich textures, complex but perfect silhouettes, wonderful prim work all add up to fantastical combinations for a fantasy world.

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

Every single outfit you see here is an exclusive for Fashion for Life. That’s how good Azriel is and how important this is to him.

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

Azriel was kind enough to give me some information:

FallnAngel Creations was created in July of 2006, the same week that its owner and sole creator, Azriel Demain, came into world. An artist by profession, Azriel used his years of knowledge in photoshop and his self-admitted tendency to “never leave well enough alone” to create items that he could not find elsewhere in Second Life. He started off with a small parcel in Euiryeong and a handful of items, his store sharing the plot with his home. By December of 2006 he bought his first sim, Falln Sanctuary. Time flew as his productivity and skill level continued to increase, and soon he was able to move his main store from Sanctuary to its own sim; eventually acquiring two more store sims. He moved his skins, hair and other avatar appearance items to Falln Sanitarium, and his furniture, decor and full buildings found a home on Falln Amusements. FallnAngel Creations has become well known in Second Life for Azriel’s singular vision, productivity, and attention to detail. Whether you seek disturbing horror items, colourful kimono, inventive silks, or something to make your dream a reality in world, you are sure to find it at Falln. Azriel’s talent and sheer range of selections is sure to draw attention and compliments.

FallnAngels Creations at Fashion for Life

When you go shopping at Fashion for Life, you will find yourself so immersed in the beautiful sims and great shopping that you might forget why over 200 people volunteered considerable amounts of time and skill to be here. They have not forgotten, however. They know 100% of the funds from their donations go directly to the American Cancer Society though the avatar relayforlife AmericanCancer.

Kouse Singh at Fashion for Life

While our mission for Fashion for Life is to have fun and help raise funds for the American Cancer Society, for some of our participants, it’s a much more personal event.

Kouse Singh has always participated in Fashion for Life. She offered a statement for the blog so people could understand why she participates. Kouse says:

Every year when what was the Relay for Life Clothing Fair, and what is now Fashion for Life, comes around, I always make time to support this cause, which is dear to me.

In the span of my life, I’ve lost many a family member to cancer, and each time one of those souls passes, the tragedy of it touches those of us who remain with much grief, and sorrow, wishing it could have been beaten.

More than half of my own family members have been diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, some of these on more than one occasion. My prayer is that through concerted efforts, such as Relay for Life, one day there will be a world without cancer. How much less pain, worry, and fear there would be, without this cruel, indiscriminate disease.

Kouse also offered that cancer is something that touches many people’s lives, around the world. These photos show Kouse’s sneak previews of her dresses and jewelry to be offered at Fashion for Life. The income made from these items will go entirely to the American Cancer Society.

Kouse Singh at Fashion for Life

This collection of dresses and jewelry will be offered by Kouse exclusively to benefit Relay for Life. They will be first offered at Fashion for Life.

Kouse Singh at Fashion for Life

As with all Kouse’s work, they show off her vision of a beautiful fairy-like world where women are garbed in formal and ethereal attire. Her gowns take inspiration from history and fantasy with richly made textures and prim pieces delicately placed just so to build a beautiful silhouette.

Kouse Singh at Fashion for Life

Kouse will also be offering this exquisite set of jewelry complete with bracelets that I do not show and two other smaller crowns tilted left or right so they can be worn with other hair.

Kouse Singh at Fashion for Life

It is our pleasure to host so many prolific and talented desigenrs such as Kouse, who are dedicating their craft and labor to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Critical Mass

She clicked the first air interchange on, clicked the second, the third, felt them all shunt open and heard the low hum of the mechanicals gearing up. Lights flickered on, popping in sequential strings of glowing red gems across the control panel. The vents slowly opened, pushing the first breaths of fresh oxygen into the cabin where the dormant residents lay.

She checked her belt. Her carbon-blade set was available, her electro-mace charged and unlocked. While she hoped she wouldn’t have to use them, the doctor warned of disorientation upon awakening, and she wanted to be prepared.

The first resident stirred…

~ from “Critical Mass,” an unpublished and mostly unwritten science fiction novel by Harper Beresford

Critical Mass

I secretly read science fiction and fantasy. I am not an avid reader but a grazer, interested in strong characters, deep thought, interesting landscapes, new cultures. Sometimes it’s fun to think about new worlds, and the very avid RP class in SL does just that. One of the best stores for such folks is run by Bryce Randt and Eclipse Lykin.

This newest offering by them, available tomorrow, shows Bryce’s newest work in 3DMax as he bakes on the textures with shadows, skillfully building the prims and pieces in SL after his work. It’s truly a piece of wonder and if you’re waiting for someone else to get back from their afk break before you resume role playing, you will most likely spend your time camming around the outfit, fascinated by the details—the buckle on the cape, the three knives tucked in the back in the belt, the pouches on the side, the laced fly. It’s a fascinating graphic journey—each exquisite detail opening up another potential story.

Critical Mass

I really like Hart Larsson’s new line of skins with their Asian features and beautiful coloring. Hart has blessedly drawn the nose wider (rather than the unrealistic Michael Jackson pinched nose I unfortunately see on so many skins for women of color) and smoothed out the skin. Hart approaches the tattoo layer differently than other creators—rather than giving you one eye makeup on the skin with lipstick options, he gives you one lipstick on the skin and you purchase the eye makeup options separately. This allows you to customize your skins as you please, swapping out say, a cat eye with red lipstick to a smoky eye with wine lipstick. You ostensibly create your own makeup set in this manner. For example, you can purchase the wine lipstick skin as I have here and purchase several eye makeup options to create your own fat-pack.

Critical Mass

For me science fiction is a way of thinking, a way of logic that bypasses a lot of nonsense. It allows people to look directly at important subjects. – Gene Roddenberry

A Little Secret

A very popular fantasy entails a trench coat and lingerie. It’s a very sexy one for both the wearer and the gazer. It is always a trench coat, always a trip to his office midday in a busy city, always a taxi ride over. There is something so piquantly delightful about the secret of what’s under the trench coat—and what isn’t.

A Little Secret

Imagine the satiny lining of a trench coat against your skin, its warmth as it slides against your body and the thrill of being the only cover between you and exposure as you ride over in the taxi on the way to his office through traffic. Thankfully, Emma Gilmour’s trench covers just enough and gets you from taxi into his office. Beautifully sculpted and rendered, it certainly makes this fantasy seem almost real, especially with stockings peeking underneath.

A Little Secret

And those stockings… well they are attached to the garter that is skillfully made by camilla Yosuke, the doyenne of lingerie in SL. As your coat is drawn open, the scent of your fragrance floats out, warm off your skin, and the sheer swiss dot of the garter and bra is enticingly revealed. Your coat slips off your shoulders and drops to the floor and his eyes follow the lines of the lingerie around to the back, seeing a little sweetheart cut out on the panties. Your intent becomes suddenly clear, as you can see the expression on his face.

A Little Secret

Tricky Boucher’s skin is the ideal for this look. Sensuous, glowing, freckled and shadowed in all the right places, it compliments camilla’s lingerie. A sexy updo from Truth Hawks with stray tendrils falling out means this hair will soon be taken down. Pretty pumps from Fallingwater Cellardoor get you past the receptionist with their proper and classy styling and right into his office.

A Little Secret

It’s not what you wear – it’s how you take it off.

Queen

Ever meet a woman with magnificence? It’s the only word I can think of—magnificence. She’s a queen. She’s strong, quiet, commanding.

Queen

I found the outfit for such a queen at Isaura Simon’s store. With her beautifully drawn textures (especially the gems wrapping around the torso and the motif gem piece), Isaura knows how to dress a powerful woman. Her garments say she owns this place. This ensemble comes complete with the staff which has a mini AO built in that includes poses such as the one you see above.

Queen

Isaura carefully constructs her skirts with tiered prims and a close-up look will show gems falling off the shoulder pads—an incredible touch. Her system pieces are clean—no ghosting and a very gently rendered drop shadow to give more depth to the piece. The bra and panties underneath include a brilliant sparkling texture. It all works.

Queen

I wear hair from Sky Everett. Sky has been quiet as of late—producing but not spending a lot of time in SL, it seems. We miss you Sky :( Isn’t this hair magnificent?

I forewent the shoes sold with the outfit to go with some wonderfully detailed shoes from Rosie Lavochkin. Not only did Rosie include the signs of the zodiac across the main strap, but she imprints the big toenail with a gem and builds a shoe that is sexily strappy. (Check out the swirly on the heel.) These shoes are for women who mean business.

Adventurer

Take a step outside your sim once in a while and you might run into the power players of the RP sims. These are the women who carry heavy duty scripted weapons and have kill ratings floating over their heads. They are always gorgeous—well dressed and beautifully detailed in their character appearance.

Adventurer

One of the places the best RP’ers go is Eclipse Development, where Bryce Randt and Eclipse Lykin make being an RP’er a work of art. Their newest outfit comes with so many combinations, you’ll be able to traverse the plains, survive the apocalypse, engage in hand-to-hand combat, and seduce the prince with just a few clothing changes.

Adventurer

The outfit comes with the wicked boots and gloves as well as a sculpted chest piece that discreetly covers the breasts and another shoulder piece that comes with or without cape. Add a veil and long skirt, shoulder pads, and layers upon layers of stockings, pants, shorts, corset and sexy bra, and you get a lot in this bundle.

Adventurer

Mirja Mills’ hair is another great place for RP/fantasy wear. Her hair (which she is producing at an unbelievable rate) is perfect for outfits like these—a bit wild, very untamed and perfect for fantasy.

Adventurer
