The best part of living in SL is living like you are in the Lives of the Rich and Famous. Today I prepared for a dinner party out in my conservatory from Cory Edo for Uber, With tables and chairs Cory did for the same event (with a ton of great textures as you can see and wonderful poses, PG and Adult), I made my tables with a couple of Kaerri Rae’s great table settings and some wine. Sash Arabello has a great gacha at Shiny Shabby with pieces for the traveler including the rug I show and the pretty candles. Cube Republic is featuring the bonsai and hosta at Shiny Shabby as well.

For my dinner party, I wore one of Poulet Koenkamp’s new and sexy dresses, this one featured at her store, and accessorized with a little choker she has at the Chapter Four. I love that Poulet loves colorand  the geometric cutouts on this dress add a little interest. Fringed heels from Fhara Acacia for the Dressing Room include a color change HUD for different versions.

Kuranosuke Kamachi’s long sexy hair for Uber is a perfect accompaniment to this look. Sawsan Secretspy is featuring this skin applier at the Designer Circle and I am really impressed with how great it looks on the Catwa Destiny head (my favorite).

And the Band Played On, Part 2

I need to get new headphones. In my previous post, I stated that the MadPea Cursed Collection did not play music. It does indeed! When the instruments are set on the platform, they play the music from this video, composed by Harter Fall.

Each instrument plays individually as well! So add to the animations, the beautiful mesh construction, the gorgeous textures and the scripting, and you get quite a bang for your Linden at the Arcade . Find out more about Harter’s work on the collection on their website.

And the Band Played On

And the Band Played On

No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it. ~ Halford Luccock

And the Band Played On

When I received the Mad Pea Cursed Collection gacha set for this month’s Arcade, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. A mysterious message came with it directing me to open the packages with the enclosed tools and then rez all the instruments on the stage platform. As I opened each crate and box (which come with clever animations to replicate unscrewing or crowbarring or loosening bolts), I saw each beautiful instrument emerge and magically move to its spot on the platform, regardless of where I rezzed it on the platform. Very spooky.

And the Band Played On

I had to try each instrument, of course, and they are all scripted to be played as instruments with darling animations. I erroneously stated originally that they don’t play music but they do, which you can find out about here. Since I anticipated wearing the baton and stepping to the podium as instructed, I wore the tuxedo dress Fhara Acacia has at Shiny Shabby and accompanied it with Zuri Rayna’s drop dead gorgeous new jewelry set. I ran to Steffi Villota’s store to get her new Paige applier for the Lelutka mesh head because it was just so gorgeous and topped my look with Chiaki Xue’s messy but elegant ‘do.

And the Band Played On

Ready to go, I stepped up to the podium, baton in hand, and raised my arms. Rather than being “cursed,” the entire set is blessed with whimsy and joy because as the animation started, the instruments raised up on their own and began dancing around the podium with musical notes. I did a little animated gif below to show because a photo just couldn’t explain how awesome this set is. The whole set of gacha pieces, singularly and as a collection, has been constructed with such care and skill and whimsy that I would recommend you run out and jam that machine with your linden. It’s just so fun!

Maga

Maga

“Oh, Maga, whenever I saw a woman who looked like you a clear, sharp pause would close in like a deafening silence, collapsing like a wet umbrella being closed. An umbrella, precisely.” ~ from Hopscotch by Jose Cortazar

Maga

I just started reading Hopscotch by Jose Cortazar, recommended this weekend by a friend. But I had just started Behind the Beautiful Forevers from Keatherine Boo, which won a scad of awards and deservingly so. It’s amazing. But then last night someone told me to read A Sand County Almanac, so of course, I couldn’t wait and cracked that open. So I’ll probably find quotes from each one to share here.

This outfit reminded me of Cortazar’s description in the first chapter of his mixed-up book, a lady named Maga, who accompanies him through Paris on many adventures. (If you read the book and Maga turns out to be a poop, don’t tell me. I just read the first chapter so far.) I loved his description of this woman, and I thought it suited this look, a sophisticated beauty. I have assembled a set of mesh pieces on the Belleza body to prove, once again, that is quite doable. First, a top from one dress made by Nevery Lorakeet with a sheer panel on top and a lovely blousing that leads to a belt I found in inventory from Fhara Acacia (search: “belt,” scroll). My skirt is part of a dress from GraceHaddington that she will be putting out at Designer Showcase this month. With its perfectly shaded texture and flirty shape, it’s a great piece even without its accompanying jacket and worth it at the price. A handbag from Monicuzza Babenco from The Dressing Room and heels I retrofitted to the Belleza feet from Aleida Rhode (originally meant for Slink feet but nonrigged, so I could make them work), and the outfit is complete.

Maga

I am, as I said, wearing the Belleza body. Why? Well, frankly, I love being able to switch my hands and feet at the touch of a HUD button rather than searching through my inventory for the many separate pieces that make up separate mesh hands and feet. I was able to match my body skin pretty nicely to Sawsan Secretspy’s new Lolita skin, which she recently released at her store. I got Karla Marama’s hair at the Dressing Room. The sleek, low style is very nice though the rigging still needs a little work (saw some breaks in turning my head and pieces obscuring my face). It’s not the most sophisticated mesh hair. For a discount you can get bright colors at the event but regular hair colors like this were bundled for a higher price.

Givenchy, Interpreted

I like to wander real life fashion blogs and online magazines, especially on my iPad (all sorts of glitzy apps, dontcha know). It’s fun to see what people have designed and understand what’s going on. But honestly, the last time I walked into a store and asked for “Givenchy,” it was perfume, and it was on sale. But SL is nothing if it’s not aspirational, so one can try to replicate Givenchy in SL, non?

Givenchy

An outfit was shown in Givenchy’s fall show in Paris that caught my eye. The whole collection was a bloodbath—Riccardo Tisci apparently likes his goth or his Twilight or something. (Incidentally, they show a white gown with red creeping up the hem, very similar to one sold by Terry Lightfoot of To-a-T). A description of the whole seasonal aesthetic on Habillées pour was about anxiety due to the recession. Therefore, there is a lot of black, nuns, mysticism, satan and death. They showed this outfit and described “a procession of ghost women who had plunged their hands into the belly of the beast.” Eek!

I thought the outfit was elegant and shocking all at once and I thought it could be replicated in SL. The day after seeing the outfit, I lucked upon this pantsuit from Fhara Acacia, which was being offered at the Dressing Room. I altered it slightly to match my model—I raised the pant leg and added sleeves I made myself to the arms. I left the belt—I realize it’s extraneous but it is so well made I couldn’t let it go. Gloves are made by me using a random texture and SL’s available clothing editors. Shoes are strappy couture pumps I showed recently from Sissy Pessoa. They suit the aesthetic.

Givenchy

I forewent the model’s hair and decided on an updo from Salut Erin that I really like. I believe it’s made to be paired with a much more “innocent” look but I am all for subverting the text ;)

My skin is from aida Ewing and purposefully chosen to give me that “model” look—made up, theatrical, extreme—especially the lips. I piled on the extreme with a makeup tattoo from Saeya Nyanda which gives me the heavily lined cat eye look. In any other circumstance, that eyeliner would look clumsy and overdone, but not here.
