The Marriage of Design and Beauty

Monica Outlander, always known for her creativity and fun in SL, has announced the Miamai Luxe Scavenger Hunt, and I have been given the auspicious honor of being one of the bloggers who will be supplying a hint for you. While I won’t just give you the question and answer, I will give you many hints photographically and textually.

This is how it works: The first three people who answer all the questions on the website and submit a notecard to Shae Sixpence will win the entire Luxe Collection, including all the shoes you see in these photos. Every single one for your virtual tootsies. How can you not try?

The Marriage of Design and Beauty

This is all in honor of the release of Monica Outlander’s new spring collection at Miamai, the Luxe Collection, which includes shoes from her partner, Pill Kanto.  With this “reception,” I wanted to point out how Monica’s work is a marriage of design and beauty and for this collection, it’s a romantic assemblage of the sensual qualities of fabric and clothing with softly-colored, spring textures. The blouse drapes and balloons around the waist, the skirt flows in billows of heavy luxurious fabric. The pieces are mix-n-match so you can wear them with other pieces in the collection or potentially with other creators’ work.

The Marriage of Design and Beauty

As for our reception, what better place than the Nash Conservatory at Kew Gardens, which Barnesworth Anubis has so faithfully replicated with his Classic Conservatory, which is being sold at Collabor88 this round. The building is perfect for concerts, parties and wedding receptions, as you can see here. I festooned the windows with Maxwell Graf’s mesh drapes and hung Tya Fallingbridge’s gorgeous chandeliers, which she is selling at the Home Show. Froukje Hoorenbeek’s bistro table and vases are perfect for dinner.

The Marriage of Design and Beauty

That being said, if you look closely, each table has three pairs of shoes, one from each of Pill Kanto’s three different collections, at each table. (All the tables are shown in the photo with all the shoes Pill will be selling, hint hint hint. And yes, they are heavy on style AND land impact I found out, so put them on your feet, not on your land.)

The Marriage of Design and Beauty

The Seasons Story opened yesterday to great applause and lag so take your time before you run over. It’s open through the end of the month (I think—no dates to be found). Aida Ewing is offering a set of skins derived from her popular new Brandi series, delicate and otherworldly. I top the look with a wavy ‘do from Bubbles Clawtooth and accessorize with gorgeous pieces from Maizon Rayna and a pretty ring from Allegory Malaprop.

In My Garden

In My Garden

Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are. ~ Alfred Austin

In My Garden

My friend Todd Action is quite a gardener in real life. He’s also a reader, so he built a reading shed in his back yard in the middle of a city—a cozy area where he can go out  and read a book, enjoying the peace and quiet of his beautiful garden. Todd, like many of us, however, will have to wait to get out in that shed because this has been one heck of a winter.

In My Garden

I was inspired by two sets of gardening items that have recently hit the grid to replicate Todd’s set up for myself. My reading nook is Sway Dench’s newest little build, a little “half-timbered” Summerhouse based on German design. Sway also made all the fencing that goes around it. Now this house is not just a joke—when I visited Berlin, my host pointed out huge areas of these little houses with little gardens. People from the city owned them and would plant their garden and spend their weekend sleeping in their tiny house and tending to their garden and of course, going to the biergarten in the evening. It is a restful respite from the stresses of the city, though the houses themselves were not far out of the city and seemed close together. I made Sway’s little house into a reading shed complete with Cory Edo’s Cabinet Bed.

In My Garden

My other inspiration is Tya Fallingbridge’s charming gacha set for the Arcade. She has attended to each piece with loving detail, from the seed packets hanging from a string to the garden tools and the spare birdhouse. There is even a coiled hose to add to the collection. And it all goes with the wonderful potter’s bench she is offering. For any gardener, this set would be a wonderful gift, and the great thing about gacha items is that they are transfer, so hit the Arcade and buy your favorite gardener this darling set.

In My Garden

Of course I don’t garden in a dress but I was so inspired by the folksy details of AvaGardner Kungler’s tunic dress that I had to wear it. Done in spectacularly detailed mesh (notice the tie at the waist), this darling dress is really perfect for a flower child. Flowered wellies from Moonbubble Gothly are the right footwear for muddy patches and Maxi Gossamer’s turtle-shaped necklace adds a natural touch to the look. Mina Nakamura has just released this lovely loose braid with her signature HUD coloring system.

My skin is Aida Ewing’s base skin for the Arcade, the pretty Aria skin. I wore eyebrows from the set to shape the face but it’s otherwise untouched so you can see it in its glory. The package that Aida offers has confused some, so I hope I can shed some light on it. She has packed the gacha at the Arcade with complete skins (already made up) and then a base skin and add-ons. The 12 “combination” skins are complete skins with complete make-up and are counted as commons. Then she has rare items that are all accessories: a base skin, 3 packs of different lipsticks, a pack of eyebrows, a pack of different noses, a pack of eyeliners and a pack of freckles and moles.

This is the thing: if you put your money in and get a combo skin and then try again and get a pack of accessories, you are set! The accessories can be laid over your combo skin to alter the look of that skin. So imagine you got one of the combo skins and then the package of brows. You can now make 7 different looking skins with the different brow configurations. (And the brows come in several tones for each of the 7 designs.) So nothing is really a loser in the Glam Affair gacha. You don’t *have* to get the base skin to win. It’s a generous offering on that gacha. I imagine the yard sales will be full of items you can pick up later.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

I pose the headline question because, if you are busy in SL, it doesn’t grow very well. There’s all that running around from sim to sim, selecting plants, buying too many in a pack when you only need one, rushing to rez them before your paramour comes over so you can have a romantic evening together and finding trees not where you want, flowers growing out of benches, etc. And *dirt* under your prim nails!

Makes you want to get a gardener.

How does your garden grow?

Carter Denja and Stormy Aluveaux have solved that problem by making this handy dandy garden—a Pocket Garden they call it. Coming in sizes of 5 X 5 (30 prims), 5 X 10 (44 prims), and 10 X 10 (58 prims), the garden can be rezzed and instantly set down.

But wait.. there’s more! Click the garden and you can choose one of six ground covers (including alpha). Click it again and you can choose one of three “themes,” including white, blue and mixed. You can turn the lamppost on or off or change the light colors and intensity and color of the lamp. And sit animations are included. Drop, click, click, and you’re done!

5 X 10 Pocket Garden (please note how I am hardly lifting a finger)

Carter did all the scripting; Stormy gathered and made the textures and built the garden from sculpties and regular prims. At the low cost of 800L for the fat pack of all three gardens, it’s really quite a deal.

I am showing Antonia Marat’s sweet dress while I enjoy the garden. Antonia is one of the most experienced designers in SL. Her Rockabilly fashions and sensibilities have made their mark on SL. She sets the bar for great creation and brand clarity and keeps raising it. Her system pieces are detailed and well shaded, and her prims are employed strategically for best use. And honestly, it’s just plain old fun going to her sim to shop. (Take a ride on the scooter—that’s all I have to say.)

How does your garden grow?

I wore Rita Groshomme’s darling hair, which I got in a fat pack accidentally at the last Hair Fair (unclear signage, stupid buyer). I lucked out because the textures are lovely and the style is well done with a great color change sculpty scarf. Pulse’s Summer skin from the Valeries-T series completes the look handily.

And by the way, Carter has an incredible world music collection and plays every Monday night, 6-9 pm slt, at Madhu’s Cafe. She doesn’t play the stuff where you feel like you should be eating whole wheat bread and watching PBS and committing yourself to a life of Buddhist asceticism—she plays the good juicy stuff: tangos, love songs, pop, etc.
