Golden Treasure

I love putting together a totally fantastical look, one that is monochrome and stylized. There is no deep meaning behind this—just a satisfaction in finding a set of items that represent one of the hardest textures in SL to show–gold—in amazing ways.

Golden Treasure

I start with a swimsuit from monica Outlander’s early summer set of swimsuits and beachwear. The “Prue” is a great set—a bikini top with a thong and a nice little pareo to hide your bum. Monica has the sheen of the material and that bright golden color locked down perfectly. My shoes are great little prim toe shoes from Babette Ultsch that have a great gold texture (she also has a great silver pair).

Golden Treasure

My skin is the newest from Aida Ewing, a sunkissed beauty with a beautiful glow and sheen to the skin and lips and delectable make up. I really like this new set, which is being offered at the Skin and Shape Expo, because it shows a lot more depth and skill. Aida’s improving with each skin she makes and is starting to dominate the skin world. My golden brown hair is a Mirja Mills special color, which I love seeing because it’s so unique in SL. My earrings are grandiose affairs from Cora Lu’s newest line for Paper Couture and my luscious golden eyes are from Ikon Innovia.

Golden Treasure

Not all that blings is gold.

Mellow Yellow
Pull on a yellow sweater and some tweed capris and you can feel casual and put-together all at once. This sweater is a beauty being offered by Betty Doyle in a gatcha at the Gatcha Festival. I love the texturing and the cowl neck. Betty has a great talent at making vintage wearable even for contemporary looks. The pants are from Marie Lauridsen, who makes very interesting pants.. (that sounds funny but it’s true—I like her pants!). My little flats are from flexagons Villota, also from the Gatcha Festival. I love this gold belt by Antosperandeo Allen, which actually fits around an avatar waist realistically (once it was sized down slightly) and comes with and without an AO.

Mellow Yellow

Now that more clients are employing the tattoo layer, I feel lots better about Tuli’s Audrey set, which comes with the skins and lipsticks on tattoo layers. I love being able to make my look completely different with just a lipstick change. In this case a copper lipstick made the look.

Good as Gold

You know how some women just exude sexy? How they just give off that aura and you feel compelled by it. These are rare women–smart, confident, and independent—and that’s what makes them so sexy. But let me tell you something: some of it is attitude and some of it is studied attention to the details. The designers I am showing you today make the elements that make a sexy woman stand out.

Good as Gold

First there is the dress from Moxie Polano. One heck of a sexy woman herself, Moxie has a good idea what will make a woman appear hot without looking hot to trot. With a skirt cut high in front but low in back with sensuous golden flexis swaying around the legs, this dress entices with its sexy satin halter.

Good as Gold

Then I have this absolutely delicious skin from Tuli Asturias. I show Tuli’s work a lot. It suits me and gives off the right, more sophisticated look for my tastes. And it exudes sexiness without looking jailbait lookalike or used and rough around the edges or snooty alienish.

Truth Hawks keeps putting out this wavy sexy bedroom hair, to the delight of women all over the grid (and their lovers). I hope Truth never finds a comb.

Good as Gold

Finally, the toes. I know, you keep hearing about the toes. I had a little *cough* moment of weakness in Nardya’s store and kind of fell in love with everything, it seems. So you see these saffron sandles with their heart breakingly sexy sole and toes and bows in the back. And damn, do they complete this outfit or what?

Good as Gold

Heart of Gold

A lot of chatter has been going around people stealing other people’s ideas, etc. It’s getting disheartening to hear all of it. Most of it is not *theft* per se. It’s just jumping on a good thing. To be honest, raising a big fuss is just creating unnecessary drama. Smart people know when to “borrow” ideas and how to use them. Smart people know when it’s worth a fight. Outright copying makes you look bad. Banging the drums and creating a big stink just puts the smell on you.

Heart of Gold

Sascha Frangilli was recently the target of such a campaign, and frankly, it made the aggressor look foolish. Sascha was accused of copying a skirt—not the textures, just the prim design. To be honest, a skirt’s a skirt in SL. You can use a script to make it. Heck, I have made skirts–they are not that big a deal. Next thing you know someone is going to be DMCA’ing someone over a plywood box.

Sascha is known for her textures. (She is also known for her kindness and generosity—the aforementioned “heart of gold.”) She creates new ones for each dress and applies them to the same set of skirts she has already built, tweaking the system pieces and accessories to make each creation a new one. It’s a smart way to work—her customers know what they are getting and know it fits. It’s her way and has served the ladies of SL well for a few years now. Take, for example, this new dress from Sascha. With her characteristically glittering gold texture, rounded decollatage, assortment of skirt offerings, from slim as shown here to a large “battleship” skirt, it is a great deal for glamorous evening wear.

Heart of Gold

I show it with a skin and chignon offered by Monyka Benelli and Monicuzza Babenco at this week’s Dressing Room. Monicuzza offers a rich beautiful alternative for women of color with this skin—it’s very distinctively Monicuzza’s with the heavy eyeliner and glowing skin.

Necklace is by the unimitable Alienbear Gupte. Who else could twist and turn a prim like that and then put a texture on it to make it look like pure gold dripping with pearls and flowers?

Heart of Gold

I have quoted this already but it bears repeating:

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”

Rise, Gentle Moon, Rise

I had to show another set of items I picked up at the RFL Clothing Fair and the Melt exhibition, combined to make a very interesting look.

Rise, Gentle Moon, Rise

Aradhana Voight has made a beautiful gold dress to benefit RFL as well as being sponsor of the absolutely gorgeous New Delhi sim built by Grace Loudon. With its amazingly shimmering gold textures (making gold look like this in SL is no easy feat) and beautiful silhouette, this Indian-inspired gown is magnificent and sleek for any occasion. Aradhana cleverly adds a feathery optional waist skirt that can also be worn as a separate piece so you can wear the top with pants.

Rise, Gentle Moon, Rise

I show it with this amazing skin from Juliette Westerburg for the Melt exhibition. Again, having the artists combine efforts based on a common theme was a great exercise for all of those who participated. Some, like Juliette really answered the call, in this case using her great skills in texturing to create magical and fantastic skins. I like seeing her go from her “everyday girl” fashions to this more artistic and fanciful skin. It shows the girl has some chops and can think outside that same old box. The hair is a crazy cool piece I bought at Hair Fair last year made by Miranda Milestone. I had never had the opportunity to use until now. It needed an equally cool look to make it all make sense.

Lady of the Manor

What happens when you take the hammer and paintbrush out of a builder’s hands and replace them with a loom and sewing needle? You get something beautiful and magical.

When I was at SLCC, I ran into a lovely lady who goes by the name of Cierra Anatine. Unassuming and gentle, she approached me and introduced herself. With her warm smile, she told me that she built medieval houses in SL, and I made a mental note to check out her work online, but that note slid out of my brain.

Lady of the Manor

Blessedly she recently contacted me on Avatars United. She told me she had started making clothing, and now I am the proud owner of three dresses by this amazing artist. The dress I show here is imbued with the wealth of Cierra’s imagination and talent from its sculpted collar to its beautiful gold boots. Note the regal shoulders from the turned back color, the cleverly textured skirt (one texture inside, the other outside), the delicious variation of proportions between the texture on the sash and the top. Cierra is ready to unleash her talents on the fashion world in SL as she has the building community. We’ll be lucky to have her.

Lady of the Manor

I encourage you to check her buildings, which are at once magnificent and cozy and warm. I visited the Berkshire Manor, and I could smell the bread baking in the ovens when I went through the door. A merry fire crackled in the fireplace, a kitten slid through my ankles, and warmth enveloped me. I peeked in the kitchen and the most amazing loom sat in the corner, waiting for my attention. (I have done weaving in RL-this loom is all that.. really!) A small gardening room with potter’s bench led to a simple but elegant garden. I wandered her sims for a couple hours. Cierra has made a most incredible environment in SL.
