Brief Interviews

“[T]his was what one might call a quote Granola Cruncher, or post-Hippie, New Ager, what have you, in college where one is often first exposed to social taxonomies we called them Granola Crunchers or simply Crunchers, terms comprising the prototypical sandals, unrefined fibers, daffy arcana, emotional incontinence, flamboyantly long hair, extreme liberality on social issues, financial support from parents they revile, bare feet, obscure import religions, indifferent hygiene, a gooey and somewhat canned vocabulary, the whole predictable peace-and-love post-Hippie diction….”

~ David Foster Wallace, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, ‘#6   E——— on “How and Why I Have Come to be Totally Devoted to S——— and Have Made Her the Linchpin and Plinth of My Entire Emotional Existence”, The Paris Review

Brief Interviews

I recently read the above story from David Foster Wallace and was reminded why I had such a big crush on him while he was alive (which he is not anymore, having tragically committed suicide after a long battle with depression and tinkering with his meds, which proves to be a cautionary tale). He was the kind of man who is sensitive and abhorrent all at once, vulnerable as a tomcat’s wet pink nose, brutal in his masculinity, uncomfortable in the knowledge of his inborn inheritance as a quote Straight White Male .[1] You could smell through his writing his struggle with his need to be Male while being Sensitive, Thoughtful, and all those things a good post-feminist man should be. He quarreled with his own existence vis a vis women, as evidenced in his book, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. [2] (The character speaking in the above was not Him—David Foster Wallace—but him—a representative of a male type DFW clearly had encountered as have many of us because DFW’s greatest gift was seeing the smallest cultural cues and entwining them in his epic works.) What made DFW so abhorent is that you knew he was going to be the kind of man who was kind, giving, understanding, and attentive, humble and profound when you met him, but the day after he would be the kind of man who would crush you when he did not call you in the morning as he suggested.

This is his Granola Cruncher, all free and loose in her tie-dye dress from Larcoco Mathy, barefeet from Siddean Munro slipped into little Birkenstocks from Take Lowey. (Thank goodness for multiple attachments—oh yes, I did.) Her lustrous blonde hair is wavy and loose, banded by a loose leather tie and beads from Truth Hawks.

But it’s her face he sees—the freckles scattered over her nose, the gentle blush of her cheeks, the exactitude of the shape of her lips (with a tiny ridge down the middle of her lower lip, two dimples teasing at the corners of her mouth)—all supplied by Gala Phoenix.

Why?Truthfully, he was really good-looking.

[1] He, however, was not as bad as the police captain in Junot Diaz’ masterpiece “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,” who was “one of those very bad men that not even postmodernism can explain away.”

[2] The story cited in the above quote was awarded the Aga Khan Prize for Fiction and possibly was the precipitant for his receipt of a MacArthur Fellowship.

Snowshoes

I have been holding on to this beautiful outfit for quite a while, waiting for the perfect time to show it. Well, since we’re talking about winter….

Snowshoes

Heather Rau has cast winter in a realm of fantasy with this beautiful outfit. With its mix of textures and fine prim work, this outfit can find itself very at home on RP sims but also on all the beautiful winter sims in SL. I feel like an adventure of snow-covered land might not be so bad when I wear this. In fact, I feel like kicking some polar bear butt.

Snowshoes

I would love to say that the snowshoes are the coolest part of this outfit, but it’s a tough contest. You have the fur cape, the sexy turtleneck sweater (frayed at the bottom), the sexy winter white pants, the chunky, rope-lashed fur boots, the rope belt with the knife and pouch, and oh yeah.. breath.

Snowshoes

I am wearing a lovely skin from Monicuzza Babenco that was given out to the group members of YS&YS at the opening of their new sim, Feel Beautiful. With its lined eyes but sublime smile, it’s a perfect accompaniment to this outfit.

Check out the gorgeous, fantastic hair from Mirja Mills, whose store is a one-stop shop for wild hair, kilts, and other fantastic items. Watch out polar bears!

And finally, a shout out to my friend PeterX, departed from SL but not my memories. Have a wonderful holiday and best of luck in the new year, Peter :)

Panther

One of my first friends in SL was Heather Rau. We met in a store when I was a newbie, both shopping (fancy that), and she became one of my first SL shopping mentors. She had amazing skills in SL—she could do it all—build, script, look beautiful, make a great shape (she made my first one—the one I have now is a variation of it), engage in role play. She helped me greatly. Then she went quiet.

Northern Forests

Heather had discovered Gor. Now, if you knew Heather, you would have thought pigs had started flying. She just didn’t seem the type to go for that at all. But she walked into the forest, and she never looked back. She undertook Gor as she did anything else—with intensity and intelligence. She built an AMAZINGLY beautiful sim for her Panther sisters at the Northern Forests of Gor. (Be forewarned: the Panthers there expect RP at all times. Do not wander in as a tourist without escort—you will get captured.)

Panther

Her shop is named “Black Orchid,” a gorgeous exotic name for gorgeous exotic pieces. I am blown away by the things Heather is selling—intricate jewelry, panther clothes, and cold weather clothing (with snowshoes!) for panthers.

Panther

I chose this panther outfit because, well frankly, it’s hot. Heather has made the most of her system pieces, including adding depth with shadows and wrinkles and ripped holes. True to Panther existence, her outfit includes the tools every huntress needs, including a knife and feathers, tied by a cleverly knotted rope around the waist. Her necklace and bracelets include intricately textured beads strung on leather cords and metal bangles. Heather told me she makes what she wants to wear, and if you ever saw Heather, you would realize she has a beautiful aesthetic.

This rocking hair from Akila Rondelstein includes everything a girl in dreads needs. With it’s cleverly gesture-activated color-changer, this piece is 31 versions in one with the different choices available. Check out Street Dermatology. She has some funky fine stuff there.
