Everybody’s goes go to town.
But here is one thing you should know
Sing sing sing sing everybody start to sing like dee dee dee, bah bah bah dah
Now you’re singin with a swing

~ “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Benny Goodman

Sing, Sing, Sing

Swing on over to Genre this month because the collective artists that make up the event are working on the theme of “Big Band Swing.” June Dion contributed with this great sleep dress, a mix of mesh and system pieces with a sexy tight fit and sleek, snazzy trim to make this dress have a touch of menswear style. Little music barrettes from Ravenna Rossini evoke Big Band style and wonderful shoes from Tiffy Vella, to be work with Slink feet, add wonderful vintage bows to the look. Elegant poses from Olaekna Chesnokov that she will be selling at Pose Fair, which opens April 19, dropped in my lap so I could pose dramatically.

Sing, Sing, Sing

I am, of course, dancing to the swing playing on the grammophone from Spooky Mistwallow, also available at Genre. I wore an old vintage standby—my favorite wavy style from Kin Keiko. A trip over to the Cosmetic Fair helped me dress up my luxe skin from Ava Grau. Deep red lips from Constance Daehlie and golden eye make up from Nikohl Hax makes my beautiful sing, sing, singer glamorous and read for the big screen.

Unravel

While you are away
My heart comes undone
Slowly unravels
In a ball of yarn
The devil collects it
With a grin
Our love
In a ball of yarn
He’ll never return it

Unravel

There is something about Eshi that reminds me of Bjork. I think it’s the use of prims and textures in the same way Bjork seems to use instrumentation and melody. It’s joyful, shimmering, exotic, beautiful, unique and sometimes confrontational or bizarre.

When we see an Eshi dress, it makes sense even though it’s also odd to us, just as a Bjork song makes sense in some strange way. Eshi’s new dress, shown here, has elements of joy in the stamped blossoms, the lace, the bounty of billowing prims, the flowers floating all around. And then you hear more ominous notes: the needles jammed through the ears, the nipples pierced and chained, the almost posture-collar forcing the neck up.

Unravel

I show the dress with a new skin from milok Hermit, who offers a somewhat different look on the grid. With its fresh coloring, it has a decidedly girlish air and suits Eshi’s alternative fashion perfectly, with the black off setting the pale skin nicely.

A Spot of Pink

As the clocks fall forward (and we gain an hour of sleep), the skies will suddenly appear dark early in my part of the world. So a bright spot of pink on an outfit lends cheer and brilliance.

A Spot of Pink

Joy Laperrier and Magnifico Miggins have recently opened a lovely sim called Euphoria which contains some of the grid’s best shopping. Included with the shopping is a rewards program based on purchases made on the sim. Hit the minimums and you begin to feel the pleasure of being a valued customer by getting discounts on your purchases. This dress by Azure Electrictooth is an exclusive item on Euphoria sim. With its retro styling and beautiful satiny skirt, it’s definitely a must-have.

A Spot of Pink

I love this retro hair from Kin Keiko with this look. A girl wearing a dress like this doesn’t need something loose and sexy. She needs something just a tinge done up, a little uptight. My skin is from Kira Ahn’s line, which may still be on sale if you get there fast enough.

A Spot of Pink

I love the line of these pumps and the amazing textures. (Check the seam on the inner side of the shoe—now that’s accuracy.) Cici Vonderheide offers these absolutely drop dead platform pumps in a full compliment of colors. I love the contemporary shape.

Twiggy

Lauded for being an icon of the 60s, Twiggy was one of the first supermodels. Naturally thin (the wiki about her says she was 5’6” and 91 pounds), she had a beautiful face with big eyes and the gawky appearance of an adolescent.

Twiggy

I show my version of Twiggy in a retired dress from Cora Lu. With it’s empire waistline and ballooning skirt, it is one the few in SL that so well exemplifies this retro shape. What makes the dress even better are the exaggerated roses at the shoulder and great textured red tights.

Twiggy

I constructed the whole look around a skin from Julliette Westerburg, which is being featured at the Designers United 19. With its dark heavy makeup and painted on eyelashes (similar to Twiggy’s famous make up), I thought it was a perfect match. I modified my shape quite radically (of course) to create this look—making my eyes much larger, pushing them together, changing the shape of the head and the nose, and making my eyes quite a bit larger. And of course, I made the body very thin and without breasts or hips (though you can’t see it under the dress).

Sunday Kind of Love

I want a Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
And I’d like to know it’s more than love at first sight
And I want a Sunday kind of love
~ Etta James, Sunday Kind of Love

Sunday Kind of Love

On Sunday, you want something easy to wear, something cool, something that doesn’t need a lot of thought but looks good. This outfit from Nyte Caligari fits the bill perfectly with its breezy blouse over a simple bra and rolled up capris. Her use of prims is sparing and well-placed. Her system pieces are dead on. Nyte made the first outfit I actually spent linden on in SL, and to this day, I am happy with it. She has continued her excellent work with separates and coordinates built for Sundays.. and Mondays, Tuesdays, and so on..

Sunday Kind of Love

I wear it over a new skin from sachi Vixen, the Eve of us all. (She did all the newbie skins our new friends wear when they are born.) The skin is hand-drawn with care, showing a woman with certain character and ease. I show it with an eyeshadow from her new makeup counter at Adam n Eve where you can purchase eye shadows, lipsticks and eyelashes to overlay your existing skins.

And check out my earrings—aren’t they cute. Trixie Bumbo sent them over when she gave out her group gift. Trixie’s gearing up for Jewelry Fair and I am excited to see what she will be offering.

Sunday Kind of Love

I don’t want a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, or Thursday, Friday or Saturday

Dianthus

There is a perennial in a pot near my garage that comes back year after year, surprisingly. It’s merely protected by a small pine tree in the pot and probably exposed to everything—the downpours pounding off the roof of the garage, the pine needles piling up around it, shredded from the neighbor’s tree, big clumps of snow heaped onto it after a snowstorm. That poor little flower suffers the vicissitudes of nature and yet comes back again and again to greet us with her joyful color and smile.

Dianthus

Eshi Otawara’s newest dress brings that dianthus to mind, least of all because she has stamped a flower resembling the dianthus all over this ensemble. (Eshi is her own kind of dianthus—always greeting me with her beautiful smile.) One thing about Eshi’s body of work in SL—it’s consistent. It makes sense from piece to piece. There is a clear sensibility and voice to it. Eshi knows how to weigh the elements and make them into cohesive, coherent pieces that fit into a larger body of work. It’s a rare gift that we have an artist use SL’s medium with such dexterity and strength of vision. I can only think of Scope Cleaver matching Eshi’s skill with SL.

Dianthus

There is something almost Victorian about this ensemble with its ornate hip pieces, skirts and broad bustle and trailing train. Maybe it’s the satiny textures or the lace or the almost rococo fans bookending the hips. Surely the beautiful crenellated shells on the hips emphasize the ornate theme of the ensemble. Probably it’s that beautiful blossom of a hat, perched on the head and pinned through with one of Eshi’s characteristic oversized head skewer pins that brings a Victorian flower to mind.

Dianthus

What makes the ensemble even more cleverly designed is its versatility. She includes a pants suit with a simple hip wrap and the more ornate hip pieces you see above. She includes the absolutely adorable purse as well and the elegant gloves. She also gives you a short skirt that can be stripped down to this ensemble. When Eshi makes something, she works on it until it’s complete, adding and removing pieces until it’s right. It reminds me of a quote I once heard about how to know when a poem is finished.. when you’re adding and removing the same comma over and over.

Dianthus

I can only grace Eshi’s work with a most delicate skin. This skin, by Brendon Papp, is gently colored, not bent on outshining this brilliant work but quietly and beautifully supporting it. I have been looking at these skins for the past day and am enrapt with their coloring and delicateness.

I’m Like a Rare B-Side

“I’m just making you mixtapes with homemade covers, analog to show we’re lovers
And here under the jacket folds inside, I’ve taped my heart for you to find…”

Sometimes my SL is a kind of.. uh.. interesting. I mean, where else could I turn into a tiny, live in a huge Tuscan villa, or be interviewed on TV? Today I had the privilege of being on Designing Worlds with Saffia Widdershins and Elrik Merlin. Thank you for inviting me to speak.

I'm Like a Rare B-Side

Of course I had a quandary.. the ever-important problem popped up. What to wear? I chose to go casual. I had finally gotten out shopping and wanted to show off some of my pretties. Take, for example, this cute top Zaara Kohime featured as a Dressing Room item. I have the whole outfit in another color, but this alone is an ideal piece.

I wear it without the bikini top option here. These terrific jeans are from Janie Marlowe, who is sadly closing her store, Mischief, soon but only to open something new and more exciting, she says. A veteran of fashion in SL, Janie made some of the first and best casuals in the grid. Now she has it all on sale at great prices. Get over to Mischief as soon as possible to pick up the deals, including these great jeans.

I'm Like a Rare B-Side

This hair is one of those OMGs. Made by Kin Keiko (who has made a few of my other favorite short hairstyles), this pixie is ideal. I had to do a little adjusting to the hair, but I am not concerned. When you place the prims this close to a head, all those sliders on a shape can make a huge difference. (That’s why there is not more MEN’s hair, guys. You all want to be eggheads or blockheads or chin-heavy and then suddenly the tolerances for the prims gets out of whack.) Kin has lovely textures, a real sense of body and style to this hair. A def fat pack for me.

Earrings are from Jon Ree from his great Cowboy and Cowgirl shop. Get over there already and check out his amazing work, especially his turquoise jewelry.

Motorcycle Mama

This year my village’s school association is holding their annual community ball. It’s an excuse to raise money for the schools and have a fun time. Usually it’s a full blown ball with ladies in fancy dresses and the gentlemen dressed to the nines. This year, however, they are holding it at the Harley Davidson Museum south of downtown, calling it “Rumble on Canal Street,” and we are to dress accordingly, forgoing the usual ball gowns and suits for leathers. It’s kind of funny, thinking of all these middle class suburbanites coming dressed up in leathers and metal. It’s kind of like… Second Life!

Motorcycle Mama

Rifling through my in-world wardrobe, I found the perfect outfit to make all the other mamas cringe. This leather jacket, top and pants made by Raven Pennyfeather is the perfect antidote to suburban stodginess. With its many buckles and leather that is so thick and strong it squeaks, this leather jacket is form fitting around the waist but still hearty enough for a spin around on a Fat Boy.

The belt, made by SC Tracy, is the perfect stylish touch with its embossed texture, chain link and ankh charm. And incidentally, SC is the man who makes me look good in so many of the RFyre ads.

Motorcycle Mama

The fun thing about SL is that I can have any hair I want, and today I chose a style that will take me from the bake sale to riding behind Big Dan on a Fat Bob with no problem. This asymmetrical cut by Kin Keiko will do the trick every time. And Tuli Asturias’ shimmering neutral skin is pretty enough to wear with leather (there is no need to be too bold here).

Motorcycle Mama

Finally, the boots. I rely on an old standard in SL which would be an absolutely stunning RL addition: Bax Coen’s Prestige Boots. Imagine me, strolling in among the ladies who lunch and their accountant husbands (all wearing stiff new leather jackets like it was some sort of “naughty” secret),  heels confidently clicking and the smell of well worn leather and motorcycle exhaust trailing behind me. Ah, what a fantasy….

Vintage Postcard

Another collection has been released recently that has had a ripple around the grid, this time with the opening of a famous and much lauded sim—the collective of several creative and clearly well-organized artists. It’s an interesting model, as I had commented, and very impressive.

Vintage Postcard

The Tableau sim is, as expected, unexpected and beautiful in a sort of ordinary picture way. It’s great to see the not-so-fantastic, the home of grungy gray snow and quiet streets, rendered in this world of spinning and glowing things. The creators at Paper Couture add a splash of drama to the proceedings with their Winter Collection, again pulling out the stops with interesting experiments with sculpties and flexis, textures, and system pieces.

Vintage Postcard

In fact, one of the things that Ava Lu does brilliantly—more so than most any designer in SL, is use the flaws of the system skirt to her advantage. She blows it out and up, making a broadly skirted jacket for this suit, pulling it over a prim skirt. The skirt, a sculpty, is overblown and gorgeous, evoking the stiffness of taffeta. The textures, especially the “burnt” edges, are luscious.

I show this dress with a very bold and gorgeous skin from Torie Senne. The red red lips pop and work with a sort of interesting frisson with the yellow eyeshadow. That shadow pushes me past a mere vintage look to something else, something I hope more edgy as the folks at Tableau and Paper Couture would have it.
