Lapointe & Bastchild at Fashion for Life

18 03 2011

The love story of Paul Lapointe and BastChild Lotus is almost as romantic as their clothing. Married last fall in real life, the two originally met in SL and reached around the world to be with each other. Their love and romance imbues everything they create—you can go from dark gothic to sexy casual to pure beautiful to tall, dark and handsome when you shop at L&B, all with their cojoined style.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

Dark gothic is Lapointe & Bastchild’s bread and butter. Somehow the energy created between the two individuals brings out a dark romantic vision that is deliciously intriguing and sexy. Paul and BastChild agreed the New Orleans-influenced Irving Penn sim, built by Syngen Sohmers, was an ideal home for their store. New Orleans holds many fond memories for the newlyweds.

Both creators have honed their skills and provide more and more creative work, serving all moods of their customers. For example, this sexy punky little outfit (shown with their versatile color-changing boots that include a hud—FFL Exclusive!) highlights how they can go from dramatic romanticism to sexy grunge in one turn.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

Even casual is no problem for L&B, as shown by this darling little outfit with its cropped hoodie sweater, distressed jeans and funky sculpty belt. Paul and BastChild’s talents contribute so much to SL and it’s an honor to have them sponsor a sim at Fashion for Life.

Lapointe and Bastchild at Fashion for Life

And they also make men’s wear. This iconic tuxedo will make any man stand tall and handsome and take him around the grid in style. They also offer the incredibly-styled shoes shown (and honestly, there are only a handful of really great men’s shoe makers in SL).

Paul and BastChild have participated in Fashion for Life for several years because they know how important the work the American Cancer Society is. In 2007, cancer was the cause of death of 13% of the people worldwide (7.9 million). It killed 700,030 people in North America in 2007; 2,326,515 in Eastern Asia in one year; more than 50,000 in Australia that year; and 521,303 in Western Europe in 2007.  It’s a global disaster, much more expensive and tragic than any other disaster you might see on TV or in newspapers right now. Relief for this is needed year round, year after year. Paul and BastChild’s generous donation adds a small bit to this. They also know, despite the “American” in the Society’s name, their donation will help globally.

Honor Paul’s and BastChild’s generous donation. Shop at Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

18 02 2011

French fashion has always been the cornerstone of the industry. France is the home of couture, of elegance, of clothed sexuality. It’s also the home of Morea Decosta, the owner of Morea Style.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

Morea Decosta represents her vision in translucent flowing prims, delicately decorated textures and seductively designed system pieces. Morea, like the finest French couturiers, understands a woman needs to feel sexy and needs to feel light, sensual fabrics against her skin. She also understands a woman wants to show off her best features.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

She also recognizes that a woman needs different looks for different occasions, so she doesn’t only provide dramatic ball gowns. Cocktail dresses and pant suits also feature in her fashion, all carrying the same stamp of sensual elegance and beauty.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

Morea Decosta has participated in Fashion for Life for several years. This year, Morea Decosta decided to donate for a store space at Fashion for Life but she generously added a personal donation to become a VIP Sponsor. She did this because she knew many would see her brand and because she knew contributing to the American Cancer Society through this program insures all donations go directly to the ACS without passing through anyone else’s hands.

Morea Style at Fashion for Life

Make sure you attend the Fashion for Life, March 12-22, SL’s biggest fashion fair on 9 sims hosted by the American Cancer Society and SL’s Relay for Life!

Faithful Mirror

18 08 2010

I became friends with Todd Action after I started going regularly to dance at Tiphares on Sunday nights. Todd is, like many men in SL, interested in representing his real self with his avatar. He has no desire to look buff or young–he just wants to be himself.

And his self is a very creative and productive one. From the amazing music he spins faithfully every other Sunday night to his culinary and artistic adventures on his blog, les jeux de cahiers de cuisine, Todd amazes me with his creativity and aesthetic. He creates in real life–books, bouquets, reading sheds, gardens, dinners, cognac–that prove a life lived productively is a good life.

“Water is my eye, most faithful mirror”

Faithful Mirrow

I am always me, the RL me, in SL, always have been. We all go through our phases of wings and gothyness (though sometime I do still have an affinity for certain dark articles of clothing i have bought over the years) and such in SL but I passed those by mostly after the first few weeks. I’ve only ever bought three skins. I upgrade once a year once some new strides in technology or art change the texture of us. Never had a woman AV, or a creature.

Perhaps I am boring in this way, or somehow old-fashioned, but I never pretend to be more or less than I actually am. My avatar’s first name is my own and If i could have picked my real last name when i signed up I would have.

Faithful Mirrow

So, for the most part, I dress like I do in RL. Some casualwear, some formalwear. Things I would, and do, buy in the real world, things i actually own and often am wearing at the same time in both worlds. Items that appeal to a very personal sense of style. i am very choosy when it comes to clothes in SL. This is one of my favorite outfits because of the detail on the items, especially on the pullover, that small bit of graphic design. Hair, I think, has been the hardest to find to match who I am. I had to gray this myself.

My eyes are, in fact, a texture taken from a photo of my real eyes. I used to go around, however, with my primOptic glasses set to an opaque white. I did this for some private reasons and I suppose it does say something about the inner me my friends, both the RL and SL models, come to know over a long period of time.

Faithful Mirrow

I do make an exception with one otherSLworldly item: my clockwork heart. Click on it and the small doors open and all the gears are awhirl inside. That is one thing I would replace in RL if I could with its SL equivalent.

Faithful Mirrow

Cool But Not Cold

27 03 2010

Lately I have been exploring questions of Otherness and identity in my friendships in SL. It’s a long story but one that has found me poking around into putting on other avatars and looks. A friend challenged me to make a man and make the one I would like. Well, truth is that I like lots of types of men. And making men here is not exactly an easy task for me—there is something indefinable about men for me—elusive and mysterious. I always struggle, probably because I am not male.

Cool But Not Cold

Check out my guy. I worked hard on him. Are we allowed an alterego? This might be mine. I start with a guayabera shirt. I just have a thing about them—I think they are sort of retro and sexy and Latino-tinged all at once with a casual cool elegance. This one, made by Floatie Hock, is the first one I have found in SL, and it’s all I need. Floatie has a whole treasure trove of vintage and cool clothes in her store, by the way, and she does this white shirt deftly with all the appropriate wrinkles and pockets. (And designing white clothes is no easy task.)

I accompany the guayabera with cool pants from my pal Rob1977 Moonites. I met Rob when he and his partner, Lexie Jansma, double-handedly pulled off the Menswear Fair. Rob had some great designers there but he’s no slouch himself. Rob is a straight-forward guy, and he understands that the typical guy in SL—one who is not into RP or glam, for example—just wants a decent pair of pants. He provides that in these black cords.

Cool But Not Cold

The skin is a photorealistic rendering from iLLNiniA Palmer, one of ten male skins she has recently released in her new store in the Wastelands. I was prompted to seek out her skins after I read in plurk that someone felt they were the ugliest skins she had ever seen. In our world of airbrushed cartoon realism, elven ears and sour puss faces, perhaps a real looking male face is kind of startling, but it certainly isn’t ugly. Who hasn’t had a crush on a guy like this at one time or another, zits and all? The guy is, even with his little flaws, cool. Let’s face it. Please note that this skin is worn over my regular male shape—not the one provided with the skin. It still works pretty well.

Hair is from Truth Hawks. I was pretty stuck on this hair but I wanted the hat, so I jammed Maddox DuPont’s hat with hair over the Truth hair and moved prims around to make it all fit together. So, yes inside my head is another whole head of hair. The glasses are a cute color-change pair I received from Posy Trudeau. They include scripts to change the glasses to one of five cool tortoiseshell patterns or several other colors, and they are offered in small or large sizes.

Cool But Not Cold

11 01 2010

SC Tracy got back from his winter holiday rarin’ to go. Find below his recommendations for the New Year. ~ Harper

Resolution, 2010: Wild Sided

Yeah, it’s 2010. I’m goin’ bare chested. Not because Harper asked me to take my shirt off again. (Not that I mind! ~Harper) I just got a chance to preview a new skin series from WolfM Voyager of SaWoDe*, “Pascal” in the Sunkist skin color. It’s a hot, totally dangerous skin that has versions with different tats over either left or right eye. Sexy eyeliner, enviable six pack, with almost bare, beautifully rendered chest hair that will get the attention of the ladies, and statistically many of the men.

Resolution, 2010: Wild Sided

This was a rough week for me, it was new years. I needed to go to a place to gather my strength, a place to recharge my spirit and refocus.

Resolution, 2010: Wild Sided

I went to Le Look. Specifically, Weird Monkey Design (WMD) at Le Look. I’m  thinkin’ I gotta get wild, gotta hook up. With some new jeans and a few accessories, and boots, too. Looking around, I somehow wound up at the WMD main store, scanners locking on  Ronin, The Zoo Jeans. I’m wearing the dark edition. What the hell, picked up the regular wash, too. Some of the best matched and fitting sculpted prim legs I’ve seen. Love the sculpted legs with the turned up cuffs. Sexed-up low-rise. Color and workmanship, ultra real. Back pocket detail has an almost designer late 70′s, early 80′s feel.

Resolution, 2010: Wild Sided

Then a moment Zen—the WMD, Necklace. A simple design, Yin and Yang 70′s chic.  Great, idiosyncratic  detail, especially a screw closure in back. But the moment of Zen ended quickly when I saw Rawdoll’s studded Juxtabelt and its biker “Iron Cross” buckle. Also, got the fully scripted (like amazingly so)  Nuthin’ But Trinkets bracelets, which I wear constantly. (Both include men’s and women’s sizes).

Resolution, 2010: Wild Sided

Finally, das boots. New from GutterBlood Spoonhammer, the Rot Test Boot. These are a masterful interpretation of a paratrooper boot. They’re the sh*t. The realistic, detailed texture speaks volumes about where you’ve been and what you’ve been doing. I’ll leave that to the individual to interpret. But interestingly, they’re fully scripted for not only color (Dark, Black and Red) but prim weight as well. Those clubs get so damn crowded, no one wants their boots responsible for crashing a sim just as the party gets hot.

Suiting Up

11 11 2009

A while ago, when I was still exploring fashion in SL and learning places and names, I would consult with Dirk Talamasca, who always seemed to pull something out of his pocket to show me. (In fact, he is the one who brought Raven and me together.)

Suiting up

When I asked about the best men’s suit, he would always point me to Musashi-Do.  A year later, I met Shiryu Musashi when we were working on the Renascimenti Virtuale together. I later met him when he reintroduced himself. He is an old player but a good one, exacting in detail, careful about hand-drawing every pixel of his suits. And the quality shows.

Suiting up

(Check out the obligatory back shot here.) From top to bottom, system piece to prim piece, everything is perfect on his suits. The textures are more developed than his older suits, and Shiryu lends a sensibility about fashion from his own RL fashion experience and education. He also lends his eye as a man, knowing well what men want.

Suiting up

You get several shirt colors with this suit, and he has included in the mix a clever way of changing out your tie and collar with a handy hud. This is perfect for men, who love gadgets and hate shopping. Buy one suit, get the whole shabang.

And the whole suit is transferable! So ladies (or gentlemen), you can buy these for your favorite men!

Suiting up

I am wearing the luscious Ethan skin from Mallory Cowen. I used to be exclusively a Raq girl. Now I am a Raq guy—go figure. For the men who complain there is no decent hair in SL—go to KMadd. It’s all there. Really. OK, so they don’t have the “skullet” (mullet for bald men—thanks, Bear, for that one). They got the good stuff.

And had to finish this off with shoes that suit the man and his suit, so of course I went to Eponymous Trenchmouth. Epy is one of the best men’s shoe makers in the grid. And my favorite shoes from him are the Shanghai. Stylish, sleek, eclectic—not every man will be right in these shoes but the one who is.. oh, he is oh-so-right. I show the shoes with the cuffs from Shiryu’s suit draped at perfect height, in perfect alignment, with perfect texturing.

Suiting up

The Menswear Look

28 10 2009

One of the best tips I EVER got was early on in my SL when Heather Rau said, “Buy boy hair. Doesn’t matter if you’re a boy.” I was photographed on the pages of the Second Life Herald wearing the Poynter from Armidi (bought when they were still doing business out of a trailer and had only three hairs) and showed I wasn’t afraid of making the boy look work for me.

The Menswear Look

So it was not a surprise when I helped coordinate a fashion show this weekend for Shenlei Flasheart featuring men’s clothes, and I saw a lot of ladies buying the clothes. (It really didn’t hurt that the 12 men modeling flirted like mad and sold those clothes, almost off their own backs.) I am featuring one of the suits Shen sold—the most discreet of the batch without the plaid pants and vest (which she made to show that you CAN do straight lines with good seams on system pieces in SL—I swear.)

The Menswear Look

And here are the vest and plaid pants, worn as a separate sort of outfit. Kind of sexy, I think (though I still have the glasses and hat on).

The Menswear Look

The suit is not the only surprise here. I donned hair from Maddox DuPont, changed up the hat color a bit (darkening it for my needs), and slipped on some glasses from Solar Flare (what a name).

The Menswear Look

It’s not menswear well worn by a woman without womanly touches. That’s why I wore this delicate skin from Lorac Farella and super sexy heels from Onyx LeShelle. I might work in a man’s world and even wear his trousers (and vest), but I will always be a woman.
