Put on that dress
I’m going out dancing
Starting off red
Clean and sparkling he’ll see me
Music playing make it dreamy for dancing
Must be a way that i can dress to please him
It’s hard to walk in the dress, it’s not easy
I’m spilling over like a heavy loaded fruit tree

If you put it on, will he notice? I am guessing in this dress from monica Outlander, there is a good chance he will. When we dress up to get a lovers’ attention or just attention, what do we focus on? Some people think it’s all about showing some skin. I think it’s about showing something less overt—the curve and sway of a feminine body, the very subtle cultural cues—a slit up the leg, an open back. Monica’s dress quite effortlessly achieves this.

Top Rail

My skin is another glorious example of Gala Phoenix’s newest releases, a beautiful soft skin with an underlying sensuality and a fresh freckled countenance. I have been resorting to overlying the dark brows from the Chic series on her skins—I really want a darker brow when I wear dark hair.

And my dark hair is a beautiful sensuous style from Queue Marlowe’s latest line. I think this style really has that sort of Mary Louise Parker look to it—loose curls flowing down in a sexy silhouette.

Modern-Day Cleopatra

Modern Day Cleopatra

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety
.
~ from “Antony and Cleopatra” by William Shakespeare

Modern Day Cleopatra

And so Shakespeare invents for an archetypal woman, so vigorous, so vivacious that even in later years, she is interesting. (She is also vain and dramatic, self-centered and selfish—not exactly a sympathetic heroine). Perhaps that’s why the fantasy woman in SL is so prevalent—she of the huge gown, extravagant hair and eyelashes, and incredible features. Agnes Finney sells to this dream—a dream of an elaborate gown kissed with key details, like this high collar, the butterflies at the hip, and the high cut up the leg. Our Cleopatra considers herself royalty and expects to be treated as such.

Modern Day Cleopatra

Aida Ewing plays to the fantasy as well with her shimmering, glimmering makeup, this time on a beautifully lush darker skin highlighted with diamond-enhanced lashes from Viola Leigh. Strappy sandals with leather crenellations on the heel from Onxy LeShelle complete our modern-day Cleopatra, aiming for her Antony.

What About Lunch?

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like “What about lunch?”” ~ Winnie the Pooh

What About Lunch

Admittedly sometimes I ramble on far too long in my blog so today it’s going to be short and sweet—kind of like this dress from Anessa Stine, a new offering from a new designer for DCNY. She uses what seems is a photosourced texture that has been carefully rendered over the dress shape so you have a sexy peekaboo fabric without being too revealing.

What About Lunch

My skin is an offering from Monicuzza Babenco at the Dressing Room with a pretty demeanor and bright lips. My hair is a new delicious updo from Truth Hawks. How does he keep doing it?

Queen of Pastry

I am watching the movie, “Kings of Pastry,” while I write this blog. Following chef Jacquy Pfeiffer (and others), it documents what these pastry chefs have to do to earn the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France, which is the highest achievement a pastry chef can achieve. You find out it takes an incredible amount of artistry, engineering, skill, knowledge, trial and error, and hard work to get to that level.

Queen of Pastry

I rarely show someone’s work twice in one week, but Tammany Goodliffe sent over this perfect piece of pastry and I had to take photos today. With the exquisite bodice and beautifully-made skirt, it’s a display of beauty married with smart work. She deepens the color of the print on the sides so the seams match nicely and the body is given a subtle contour while she places froofs seemingly randomly but in a beautiful silhouette. The color is nuanced and lovely. She offers this same dress in tangerine.

Queen of Pastry

I show with a skin from Minnu Palen that came with several hair pieces that can simply be put on top and match the hairbase on the skin perfectly. The skins also come with tattoo lipsticks—Minnu was the first I found to employ this smart trick. The skins are elegant and minimal and suit this dress in tone perfectly.

Happy Birthday, Finned!

Blue in Green

The story about the jazz piece “Blue in Green” off the epic album “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis is a convoluted, drama-ridden one. In the story, Miles Davis repeatedly comes off as being a first-class jerk (which is no surprise as he came off as one in general). Nevertheless it is an iconic jazz ballad that thrills people when they hear it. It’s all that jazz needs to be—progressive, melodic, lush, cool, deep but approachable, melancholy. John Coltrane is his best soulful self. Bill Evans’ composition and playing is ground breaking. Paul Chambers lays down the cool. And Miles Davis is all the best he can be, which is pretty damn wonderful. (Far better than I have written about jazz so don’t expect me to be articulate here.)

The composition of “Blue in Green” as with the other music on the album came from Miles Davis sketching out notes on a napkin (literally) and getting in a studio with the players and going at it, each bringing his best to it and each playing to the new idea of modal jazz. SL can be the same kind of locus where people get together and riff on the medium, coming up with some brilliant and soul-touching work.

Kind of Blue

This outfit is a composition of sexy elegance. First we have the work of Nyte Caligari with its great system pieces (all crisp and clean and imaginative—so many tops in SL are the same old thing) and sexy silhouette. Look closer and you see the belt around the hips fits perfectly, the prim on the bottom of the sweater makes it a long sweater but not that frumpy long sweater I see too much of, the crossed pieces of fabric in back are rendered perfectly on the system piece. This is  very skilled work that comes off as effortless.

Kind of Blue

I insisted on wearing a Gala Phoenix skin with this outfit. I think it’s because I have never felt that Gala’s skins could ever quite make it to a sophisticated look but her latest line has proven me wrong, and I wanted to show that. Her skins have generally come off as adolescent and dewy and baby-faced to me. I saw their artistic merit but could not totally feel the love. That was until she came out with her Yum set recently, and she took out much of gimmicky stuff that put me off in the past—the anxiety eyebrows, the freckles, the pores, the dewy overdone lips. This new line can be worn with pride by grown women with its smoother skin, sophisticated lip colors and understated eyes. I did pop a monica Outlander makeup on the tattoo layer on to play up the eyes a little more. Gosh, I love that tattoo layer.

Kind of Blue

still, there is something here, that, perhaps, needs explaining
beyond the hopelessness of miles, the light at the end of a midnight tunnel
~ “Poem Reaching For Something” by Quincy Troupe (biographer for Miles Davis)

(And no, he doesn’t mean Miles Davis in this poem when he talks about “miles.” He means distance.)

Holiday Office Party

Lots of women’s and business magazines are full of sage advice about what to wear to the holiday office party. An article in Forbes tells us, “The wrong outfit… will quickly make you the subject of unwanted stares and gossip.” But what about SL? What do you wear to an office party?

Holiday Office Party

Eshi Otawara’s newest cocktail dress will do the job. It has the wow factor you need to be noticed among all the other glistening blinging beauties and has the cachet to make you look fashionistish. I mean, what is so wrong about a laced up bodice and speckly floaty flowers and thigh highs with high heel sandals from Onyx LeShelle when it’s an SL office party? (Especially when you bring cookies for the potluck!)

Holiday Office Party

A glamorous look needs a glamorous skin and Minnu Palen provides that with her new Mila skin. It’s minimalist, of course. You don’t get all the pores and skin glow that you get on other skins but for a model skin, perhaps that is all you need—something powdered and made up. My updo, adorned with a modified rose from Siyu Suen, is a dramatic style from Mirja Mills.

Rock Me Right

You say you haven’t been rocked in a long, long time
Oh, good, hard rockin’ is so hard to find baby
Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you shout
Oh, your homemade lovin’ done knocked me out baby

Rock Me Right

What’s a rock n roll girl to do when she wants to be rocked right? She dresses up to rock it hard. It starts with this glam coat from AvaGardner Kungler. With its wild, fiery feathers and its glam short styling, this is perfect for a girl out on the town. I wear it over a little body suit from Jungeun Vella, who is having a sale at his place on clothing and hair. Check it out!

Rock Me Right

My makeup is bold and sexy, courtesy of Nena Janus, who has come out with a fabulous new line for brunettes. I have been through the gamut of make ups and it’s a very sexy skin from top to bottom. Nena builds her own skins—no purchased templates—so this is true artistry. Next time I am going to show a softer side of this skin.

My necklace, also from AvaGardner Kungler, is just one more piece of extravagance on an already extravagant outfit. With a diamond-studded head, it loops around her neck, whispering “ss-sin” sibilantly.

Rock Me Right

Finally, the shoes, which have already walked their way all over the blogs, but I have to show my investment off as well. Maitreya has come out with this pair of socks with sandals that, under usual circumstances, would only be worn by my grandfather but in this situation look like sex in high heels. I wish they had given us the shoe without the sock—I still think they make some of the prettiest toes on the grid—but I see that in this season, socks are called for as the nights grow chilly. I will say the foot Onxy LeShelle has made here is almost as sexy as a bare foot. And I will note that the socks are color change and don’t have to be long up your leg–you can wear them down around your ankles too. Our rock girl digs this look—it keeps beer splashed during the backstage party off her toes.

Rara Avis

Rara avis in terris nigroque simillima cycno. ~ Juvenal

The rare bird shows her face more often in SL. It’s a place that attracts interesting and amazing women—women who are not afraid of technology, women who want to exercise their creative and intellectual minds, women who believe in a bigger world beyond them, reachable by pixels and words.

Rara Avis

For the rare bird, the designs of Kimmera Madison are a joy. Every single piece of Kimmera’s is new and refreshing—she doesn’t rely on old outfits and rebuild and redo. She enjoys exercising her creative energies in SL, using all her skills to make pieces that are well-constructed and interesting. The best part of this dress is the skirt, which has a weird alpha sculpty thing going on which could kill the dress, but Kimmera actually uses it to her advantage, decorating the surfaces with an embossed texture that looks terrific.

Rara Avis

I donned a cutting edge hair from Olli Braveheart to make the look a bit edgier (and to keep it all under the stylish hat Kimmera made. My skin is one of Minnu Palen’s mixed with the tattoo lipstick from another skin. Since she did not color the edges of the lipstick with a skin tone (or not that I could discern), I could easily overlay the lipstick from my Lola Sunkissed fatpack over the Estelle light skin. I have seen some tattoo lipsticks employ the skin tone to refine the edges, I presume, and that always turns out to be a fail. This worked really well.

What Sexy Is

We all walk around SL trying to be sexy, trying to attract our respective objects of interest. Some women do it by showing skin. Some do it by kneeling or wielding a whip. I like to do it a little more subtly.

What is Sexy

This dress from Barbra Kungler, currently being offered at The Dressing Room, is one of the sexiest dresses I have ever worn in SL. Barbra has successfully combined system pieces with prims to make a long lean silhouette, a dress that clings in all the right places, that looks like its wearer could loosen the tie with one move. (Which is probably wishful thinking—because chances are she won’t loosen it for you.) Barbra’s texture work—the shadows and highlights, the wrinkles and sheen, all add up to one hell of a sexy dress.

What is Sexy

Tuli Asturias’ skins are some of the sexiest on the grid and honestly, Tuli has been more than generous to her fans. This skin, a gift on the Iconically Sexy hunt, is a version of her new skin set, Audrey. With its smoky eyes and bare lips, it’s a sexy and understated look. I am wearing darling earrings from Maeve Mortlock. The name of her store is appropriate—Ear Candy. I click through the store, buying up all sorts of inexpensive treats.
