The Advantages of Being Male

In looking for inspiration for this blog, I tripped across an interesting list: 90 Advantages of Being Male. So in lieu of my saying anything pithy, please allow me to share some of my favorites:

1. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat… 3. You know stuff about tanks…. 6. Your bathroom lines are 80% shorter…. 8. Old friends don’t give you crap if you’ve lost or gained weight… 11. Your ass is never a factor in a job interview…. 13. A beer gut does not make you invisible to the opposite sex… 23. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness.

The Advantages of Being Male

Yaszi Mornington gets that it’s easy to be a man. Just throw on this tweed hoodie and it’s all good. Shelly Toonie has you covered with a great sweater and Rob1977 Moonites makes your terrific cords.

34. You don’t have to shave below your neck. 35. You don’t have to curl up next to a hairy ass every night…. 39. Everything on your face stays its original color…. 43. Flowers fix everything…. 45. You get to think about sex 90% of your waking hours… 47. Three pair of shoes are more than enough…. 53. You can whip your shirt off on a hot day…. 61. Hot wax never comes near your pubic area….69. Wedding Dress $2000; Tux rental $100…. 72. People never glance at your chest when you’re talking to them.

The Advantages of Being Male

Tricky Boucher teased his group members last week with two new men’s skin offerings. I donned the Shawn here because the eyeliner on the other was just too much for me. I will tell you, I inspected this skin thoroughly (*cough*). It passes all my tests. And Truth Hawks decides to give a nod to the guys with great new hair that came out this week. Why is there so much less hair for men in SL? “57. You don’t give a rat’s ass if someone notices your new haircut.”

77. You needn’t pretend you’re “freshening up” to go to the bathroom. 78. If you don’t call your buddy when you say you will, he won’t tell your friends you’ve changed…. 85. If something mechanical doesn’t work, you can fix it or bash it with a hammer and throw it across the room. 86. New shoes don’t cut, blister, or mangle your feet…. 88. You don’t have to remember everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries.

The Advantages of Being Male

90. Your pals can be trusted never to trap you with: “So…notice anything different?”

Ontology is Sexy!

Every campus has one: the sexy male professor, the one that make the women (and men) suddenly become serious about postmodern theory because it’s just so delicious to hear him say “ontology” or “zeitgeist” or “paradigm.” (Can you say Indiana Jones..?)

Ontology is Sexy!

The really sexy professor is the earnest one, the one who is so oblivious to girls’ and boys’ admiring glances as he eagerly buries his head in another issue of The American Journal of Semiotics. He wears a jacket (this from Yaszi Mornington) and khakis (thrifted at Floatie Hocks’) to school so he looks older than the kids and wears practical and handsome oxfords for walking to class from his apartment nearby (these being the newest from Eponymous Trenchmouth) and designer glasses—his one indulgence (from Kalnins). He carries his books in his beaten messenger bag from grad school (suitably battered by Guu Nishi) and flings a scarf he picked up in India over his shoulders for a touch of flair (embroidered by Zaara Kohime). (He may seem like an absent-minded professor, but he understands beautiful bricolage just fine, thanks.)

Ontology is Sexy!

Thank you to Hart Larsson, I have brought my sexy professor to life with his newest men’s skin. Hart has built in so many options with these skins—whiskers, hair bases, emo eyeliners, and an optional scripted cock that he sculpted himself. I will not comment upon the cock, except to say that Hart is an excellent programmer and has made it to have 6 positions. When I wore this skin, I literally gasped. Hart’s artistry is readily apparent with his talents at drawing and illustrating clear. The eyebrows are well-shaped and masculine without being those of a primate, his eyes are simply drawn and mature, and his face is handsome without being dainty. I think this will soon become the skin men flock to.

Times are a little rough in SL and RL. I don’t need to enumerate the number of issues and complaints that could be listed here. Why rehash? At times like this, retail therapy is a good thing, and it’s especially good in SL where a completely new look costs me something along the lines of a nice big double latte frappe. (Ya think LL would use this for marketing ;))

Today’s retail therapy took me to Yaszi Mornington’s place for a darling jacket with morning-glory motif. My friend Erehwon beat me to it, so I got the pretty yellow flowers and slipped it on. Oh.. relief. Yaszi has cleverly constructed this jacket so the skirt hangs down with an open belt (and covers my ample back end) and has a lovely little sculpty collar and great cuffs. I wear cute little capris from Aree Lulibub and sweet little shoes from sakka Flow.

The skin is Tuli Asturias’ new offering for The Dressing Room, starting today. With its subtle shading, summery lip and gray eye shadow, it’s a different coloring than one can normally find. But it’s typical of Tuli—so pretty.

I have taken on the dubious task of helping for SL7B, which has turned into a lot more work than expected. (Though this always happens.) As I flit from parcel to parcel, setting up media and chatting with residents and digging big holes in Sejong’s terraforming, I try to look as fashionable as I can, because that’s really what I am all about—being fashionable!

I have this breezy easy dress from Yaszi Mornington on. We all know (or should know) that Yaszi’s men’s clothing is outstanding. Well he has a few choice pieces for women too, including this darling dress made of system pieces and sculpty prims. What is amazing is that he is able to take the sculpties and instead of stiffness, they look truly full of motion and breeziness. Rarely do I catch the prim looking stiff to me.

I have Mallory Cowen’s glowing and happy skin on, trying to look fresh and youthful and full of energy (though I am exhausted already). I have cute new shoes from Kayleigh McMillan that, despite all my running around, are comfy. (It might help that I am not walking as much as tp’ing.) And I have my handy badge to identify me as “Staff.” Think they notice the photo in it?

I have been reading William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition, an exciting, albeit not new book that I put on my iTouch so I can sneak peeks while I am running around. I am enjoying the book greatly, following the path of Cayce Pollard, an advertising consultant, as seeks the maker of a series of video clips released on the Internet.

Cayce dresses in minimalist fashion, wearing only black usually and everything with labels ripped off. I am inspired by her fashion “sense,” though I am not replicating her look with this one. Actually, I bought a couple great pieces recently that need a plain canvas to stand out, so this is what I put together. (I may try to replicate a “CPU”—a Cayce Pollard Unit, which is what her friend calls her basic ensembles but it is a challenge in SL, where everything is so bright.)

Here I show a white shirt, beautifully hand drawn from Salah Axel. I was taken to Salah’s store by a connoisseur of men’s wear in SL, and I was intrigued by the basic white shirt. A staple in RL wardrobes, it’s almost non-existent in SL because it’s so hard to draw white things in SL. Salah pulls it off with subtle shadows and well constructed prim collar and cuffs.

I paired it with jeans from Yaszi Mornington. Yaszi’s jeans for men are some of my favorite in SL, and they fit equally well on women. The wrinkles, the proportion and the saturation of the colors are spot on. I especially like how he has done the sculpty prims at the base, though I would question lining the insides with a gray texture. I compliment them with heavy duty boots from Khai Sinister (that cyberpunk thing I am floating on right now).

I top it all with a simple ponytail from Parvarti Monday and a natural make up from Tuli Asturius. Sometimes you don’t need that much—Cayce finds it unnerving to be overdone herself. The interesting thing is that when designers strip it down to the essentials, you can see whether they really have the chops—textures become highlighted, shapes stand out. You can’t hide behind gimmicks. Both Parvarti’s simple hairstyle and Tuli’s plain skin show their clear talents. I don’t feel any less beautiful because I don’t “bling.”

Sometimes you see a beautiful young woman, dressed cutely, rushing from one thing to another, carrying a large messenger bag. Makes you wonder: Where is she going? What is in the bag? Where did she get those boots?

Well this chick has a chic jacket from a little place around on the Japan sim called Meriken. The taylor there, Yaszi Mornington, is expert at making clothes for men (and sometimes women) that are textured well, fashionable and versatile. The jacket includes a very well-done sculpty collar with brass buttons (and is available for men). The pants are from the same spot. Belt is something she found in the back of her closet made by Grue Ling, spray painted gold and threw on.

The messenger bag is from Japan, made by onakagoo Waco for ArtMeter. It’s very cool, versatile, and contains… well, in this case, two energy bars, a bottle of water (warm and half drunk), some half-dessicated spearmint gum, a worn copy of Neruda’s 100 Love Sonnets, a CD with “mix from Bennie” scrawled on it in Sharpie, a shopping list, a bottle of ibuprofen (open), 23 200 mg ibuprofen tabs scattered all over the bottom, three ballpoint pens, a notebook, well worn and marked “Journal,” and Jonathan Lethem’s Chronic City.

Her skin is from Mallory Cowen (young and fresh and beautiful, this one). It’s the new Tasha2 with deliciously creamy skin and pretty eye shadow.

The boots? Well, she’d tell you if you’d ask. These are made by Ju Weissnicht and are sold at several places. Several sizes come in the pack so they are sure to fit you. They are great for walking across the city.

Summer Chrysanthemums

There is a pair of shoes I have, a pair of black slingbacks that I absolutely adore. They fit perfectly (no gap in back), they are well proportioned (they don’t give me boat feet), and they are elegant (the best slingbacks are). They were simple and pure. Just what I wanted. I bought them a while ago at a shop called SKGShoes, and I returned again and again to the shop to search for new colors, only to be disappointed.

Summer Chrysanthemum

I went back again tonight, and I was happily surprised. Not only were my beautiful black slingbacks there, but there were 19 other colors! (You can imagine what I said while I gazed at the shelves of shoes.) Even better, they were revamped with a brilliant little hud which allowed for different sole colors, different heels and bow on or off. Eeeee!

Summer Chrysanthemum

I had to build an outfit with these wonderful slingbacks. Luckily, a visit to Meriken solved my problem. Yazsi Mornington is a great Japanese designer who has been doing funky and fun outfits for men and women using exquisitely hand drawn textures. In fact, his best outfits are for men (some of the THE best men’s jeans in SL), but he has put out this sweet little dress for women—Carrousel. Well, darn, if the outfit didn’t make itself.

Summer Chrysanthemum

I wanted something fun and casual, so I paired it with hair from another great Japanese designer, boo Nakamura, and forewent jewelry for simple French manicured nails from Candy Nails—clean and pretty.
