The Collector

The Collector

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. ~ Thomas Merton

The Collector

If SL is a fantasy world, than my fantasy is to be an art collector. In fact, at one time, I indulged in that fantasy and had my own little person gallery of art I had collected, but now I just enjoy it in my own home. I found that I could be a fantasy art collector at a new site called curiator.com (apply for an invite), in which people can exchange their favorite art and build a collection, perhaps finding more by their favorite artists and learning about new artists. Consider it a Pinterest for fine art. (I am Harper Beresford on there as well—find me.)

For this blog entry, I imagined an art collector with a country home—a modern villa with plenty of wall space for hanging paintings and sketches and photographs. (I do realize art encompasses more than this, but indulge me here.) I pulled some pieces from my collection on curiator.com and put them up on the walls and went to town with new items from FaMESHed and Collabor88.

The Collector

Cory Edo has made a collection for FaMESHed with a sort of postmodern bent. With suggestions of earlier periods, she mixes funky with traditionalism, modernist curvy lines with varied surfaces to offer a set that seems eclectic and pulled together all at once. The furniture features a variety of PG, and if you choose to upgrade, adult poses which will make it very versatile. And I even snuck in BabyChampagne Sass’s modern trunk (as my art collector travels back and forth quite a bit).

The Collector

Putting this collection in the villa that Cory is offering at Collabor88 was a no-brainer. It all fit together. The villa itself has a large open space with two rooms off the main space and three levels climbing up. She offers it in a shadowed white, which you can customize to your pleasure. I tinted the floor and several walls to pop color in our art collector’s house and give a tension to this modern but homey space. As always she offers privacy settings, pull down blinds, and locks on the doors so art thieves can’t creep in.

The Collector

Tya Fallingbridge’s dining room set at FaMESHed is a gorgeous addition to this house. With color change built into the table and credenza and changeable fabrics on the chairs, it’s entirely customizable. The modern lines of the chairs and credenza compliment the more traditional round table and provide a handsome or beautiful look to a dining room (depending on your styling).

The Collector

Our art collector is, of course, eclectic and stylish and I tried to show this with a black pantsuit that Spooky Mistwallow has made for the Black Fair. Coupled with strappy stylish shoes from TeamRedgrave (made orange to pop), the look is sleek but also colorful, especially with Maxi Gossamer’s Limited Bazaar jewelry. Funky nails from Giela Delpaso mix it up in this colorful assemblage.

The Collector

I used the elegant gold shadowed skin from Izzie Button, a feature at the Black Fair, as my palette. With dark brows and sleekly lined eyes, the skin has a neutral lip, perfect for our art collector. And a casual wavy flip from Chiaki Xue completes the look—she doesn’t want to look contrived.

Blue Monday

It’s a blue Monday only in color—not in feelings.

Blue Monday

It’s truly a delightful Monday. Miko Omegamu has just come out with another dress, and as always, it’s the picture of elegance and sophistication. One of the best pieces any woman can have in her wardrobe is a wrap dress and Miko makes this to perfection with a silk charmeuse fabric, elegantly tailored. I decided to dress it up with pearls from Mouse Mimistrobell and matching slingbacks from Pixieplumb Flanagan. A little clutch from Indyra Seigo adds a little pop.

Blue Monday

Finally I wear an elegant twist from Elikapeka Tiramisu (this outfit is all about twists and wraps if you didn’t notice) and Mocksoup Graves adds a perfect tint with her lip stain on a beautiful birthday gift Rhapzody Wilde offered at her store celebration.

Blue Monday

I petition that we call it silk Monday and wear silk.

Tea Party

No this is not about the political party–we won’t even go there. I have never been to an actual tea party but I was recently invited to one so I went. I was told to wear my best party frock.

Tea Party

I put on this cute dress from Miko Omegamu. Miko is one of the original perfectionists of SL. Every system piece is just so, every prim is in its place—always. And her textures are amazing. In this beautiful dress, we see a gorgeous floral print on a body-conscious dress. Miko has managed to run the crossover line from the top into the skirt. Lining things up this precisely on system pieces is very difficult work but Miko makes it look easy. Then she runs the ribbon from the other side under as if it’s seen through the fabric. The top worn underneath can be seen under the print in back as well and a darker red ribbon runs along the hem on the skirt. It’s in all these little details that the marks of a great designer can be seen.

Tea Party

The tea party was hosted by sachi Vixen, in honor of the release of her new skin Lauren. I showed the skin a couple days ago and I show here a version of the skin she gave out to tea party attendees and is now selling for a mere 150L for the next day or so at her sim. Go get it and then check out the other Lauren skins. I am wearing a new hair from Truth Hawks. He was smart enough to include optional bangs with this style, which makes it sweet.

Tea Party

If we are talking about skill, let’s talk about my great shoes as well. Fallingwater Cellardoor is the mother of all pumps in SL (imho). Before there were prim toes and stiletto heels, there was Shiny Things with Fallingwater’s shoes, patiently assembled from prim pieces. Now she has adopted sculpties in her work and she textures her shoes with the most evocative and perfectly rendered textures. Get close to these shoes and you see the stitching, the tiny scuffs from walking, the pretty little buckles. There is no reason to spend your money on anything less than these works of art.

Chinoiserie

I stole the name from today’s outfit because it’s so fitting. “Chinoiserie” is French for “Chinese-esque,” and was often applied to precious pieces of European works with Asian influences. Miko Omegamu of Icing has put out this most exquisite dress, a piece of beauty. In true Miko form, every pixel is in place, every prim perfect, the shape of the dress and skirt perfect. Miko is a goddess of good clothing design in SL.

Chinoiserie

One thing I don’t read a lot about in fashion blogs is proportion. Miko proportions this gown perfectly—the print is just the right size to suit the avatar. The skirt is the right angle and size to balance off the gown. The sleeves fall at the correct part of the upper arm.

Another thing not always addressed is the construction of a piece. Miko has ensured that the seams match on the sides as well as from the top to the skirt. The piping around the top extends down to the skirt perfectly.

Finally, the issue of prims is rarely addressed. Miko is, first of all, a great builder. Every skirt she has ever made has been flawless. Second she knows what she is doing with alphas. Some people don’t know how to control them. But Miko knows just what she is doing with them. By allowing the alphas to do their work, she gave the skirt a shifting diaphanous quality. I see lots of people do this, but that generally means they don’t know what they are up to—you can see a shadow of the body through the alphas and they just don’t look right. However, Miko MEANS to. The skirts shift subtly and with a quality that makes them beautiful. And gosh, how well did she finish the edges?

The killer about all this is this dress is a mere 350L! I have blown three or four times that much on dresses not as beautiful or well-constructed.

I don’t/won’t generally go on and on like this but Miko’s work has to be given it’s due respect. Yes, I know Miko—I guess I could call her a friend. But I bought this dress myself. Even if I didn’t know her, I would go on and on.

Chinoiserie

One other item I want to mention are Caliah Lyon’s earrings from Muse. The Chinoiserie Crimson and Gold Fan Earrings are an example of her amazing tiny prim work. Me? I let the prims tell me what they want to do. Caliah? She tells ‘em what they’re gonna do. Amazing.
