Then We Were New

Then We Were New

We can do what we want,
We can live as we choose.
You see there’s no guarantee,
We got nothing to lose.

~ “New” by Paul McCartney

Then We Were New

Nothing like a cheerful pop love song from Paul McCartney to introduce this look, which is pure pop. (And watch that video—damn he looks good for a guy who is 71 years old!) Start with a cute dress from Kim Lysette—a flowered white print on black, easy and loose, and pile on a cardigan from Marie Lauridsen. Then garter stockings (with runs, of course) from Nikkiiirene and Moni Schulze’s darling color change platform boots with leg warmers (a *steal* at  the Marquis Market—50L and worth so much more). Ariadna Garrigus’ fashionable shades, also complete with a great color change hud for lenses and frame, complete the look with a whimsical dash of color.

Then We Were New

Tricky Boucher offers a set of darling skins at the Liaison Collaborative, including this fresh look with subtly cat-lined eyes. With a variety of brow colors available, it makes it easy to choose any one of the skins for wear with any hair. Kavar Cleanslate is offering this adorable ‘do with twisty high ponytails and his amazing color changing hud at the Attic for an equally amazing price. I tried on about 50 different variations in color and streaks before settling for this more tame but rich chocolate. Mr. Diesel has poses as a group gift at his store, some of which I show here. If you like packing your inventory with his poses, this is the time to pick them up!

Then We Were New

You came along
And made my life a song
One lucky day
You came along.

All my life
I never knew
What I could be, what I could do
Then we were new.

Poetry

April is National Poetry Month in the US. Apropos of nothing, I wanted to share a poem from one of my favorite American poets, Billy Collins:

Sonnet

All we need is fourteen lines, well, thirteen now,
and after this one just a dozen
to launch a little ship on love’s storm-tossed seas,
then only ten more left like rows of beans.
How easily it goes unless you get Elizabethan
and insist the iambic bongos must be played
and rhymes positioned at the ends of lines,
one for every station of the cross.
But hang on here wile we make the turn
into the final six where all will be resolved,
where longing and heartache will find an end,
where Laura will tell Petrarch to put down his pen,
take off those crazy medieval tights,
blow out the lights, and come at last to bed.

~ from Sailing Around the Room: New and Selected Poems by Billy Collins

Poetry

I considered putting on crazy medieval tights but forewent that option to show this look that has nothing to do with the poem, a cute little pinky purple ensemble. My top is an inexpensive find from Miffyhoi Rosca, who offered this as part of an outfit at the TFG Discount Shop. I really dig the asymmetrical shape.

Poetry

The theme of this visual poem, however, is the shape and skin. I am wearing a shape from Freedom Parx, part of a new series she is selling that looks to break the old clichés of SL. She doesn’t aim for “beautiful” as much as interesting, though I find this shape pretty cute. I will remark that I did tweak the mouth corners a bit—Freedom shows the shape with a frowny face, which is something I really dislike. It’s great because the shapes are offered mod—that’s the only mod I wanted to make to this shape.

Lion Jonesford has recently come out with a new line of skins and they overlay this shape perfectly, especially in light of their Asian flavor. She offers them in a series of more pastel make-up tones for the most part, which I find lovely. The pinks and purples offset the pale complexion (which is a great color) perfectly. She also has a series of more radical make-ups (would you expect any less from Lion?).

Mellow Yellow

I’m just mad about Saffron
She’s just mad about me

Mellow Yellow
Pull on a yellow sweater and some tweed capris and you can feel casual and put-together all at once. This sweater is a beauty being offered by Betty Doyle in a gatcha at the Gatcha Festival. I love the texturing and the cowl neck. Betty has a great talent at making vintage wearable even for contemporary looks. The pants are from Marie Lauridsen, who makes very interesting pants.. (that sounds funny but it’s true—I like her pants!). My little flats are from flexagons Villota, also from the Gatcha Festival. I love this gold belt by Antosperandeo Allen, which actually fits around an avatar waist realistically (once it was sized down slightly) and comes with and without an AO.

Mellow Yellow

Now that more clients are employing the tattoo layer, I feel lots better about Tuli’s Audrey set, which comes with the skins and lipsticks on tattoo layers. I love being able to make my look completely different with just a lipstick change. In this case a copper lipstick made the look.

This is Not a Love Song

A cute dress, sexy hair, ribbon sandals, a knowing smile… it’s a pop song in the making.

This is Not a Love Song

This dress is one of Marie Lauridsen’s offerings at Designers United 4. In the past I have been a little skeptical of Marie’s supposed greatness as a designer. Her ubiquitous presence in so many special sales seemed overkill. This dress has made me feel differently, however. Her use of this print texture over the sculpty prims makes a darling little dress that passes my dance test (it doesn’t fall apart when I dance when I remove the optional straps) and uses sculpties ingeniously. The skirt, while static in a sense, suggests movement with the shadows in the pleats. The top, with the optional strap slipping down the shoulder, is also made of a sculpty. I was disappointed it had a resize script simply because it rendered it no mod and when I resized it to not bleed through, the shape was a little bulky on me. However it’s a small issue in the bigger scheme of things.

This is Not a Love Song

My glowing skin from Mallory Cowen (the Julie line made for redheads) compliments this hair from Asuka Martin. Her ingenious hud, which allows you to color the hair a select number of shades makes this hair easy on my inventory (I only need one) and easy on the sim load (the scripts are very low). I love the sexy coyness of the style and how she has managed to put fine wisps of hair at the crown of the head and all over, as real hair would have it.

This is Not a Love Song

These little prim toe shoes deserve special mention. Goran Osterham has made a cute sandal with ribbon straps. The ribbons, metal, and toenails can all be set to a color off his list, which drills down past shades to qualities of those shades. There are hundreds of potential colors and combinations available. While the toes are not as pretty and the design as sophisticated as those of creators like Maitreya or Nardcotix, they are good enough if you aren’t looking very closely (which most aren’t).

Black is Always the New Black

Are you tired of that whole thing.. “Brown is the new black, gray is the new black, red is the new black.” Guess what? Black is the new black.

Black is the New Black

Or so Takuya Jinn and Marie Lauridsen would have us think. I combo’ed these two sensational pieces into one outfit to show how well black comes off. (It is also a lot more forgiving for designers and for wearers—hides a lot of sins and we don’t have dandruff in SL, so that’s never a problem.)

Takuya’s top, which comes complete with the silver chain you see, is a useful number as it comes as a regular long-sleeved turtleneck, a cropped long sleeve piece, and the sleeveless one you see here. I would tell Takuya that normally ladies wear their necklace tucked under the turtleneck but other than that, it’s great work.

Black is the New Black

Marie’s harem pants are super funky with a great silhouette. Wear them with a dressed up turtleneck or wear them down with a hoodie. They are versatile and have a different sort of look than jeans or pants. (And they show off my fabulous gams, provided here by Tricky Boucher).

Black is the New Black

The glasses and ring are exquisite pieces from Aslan Kish. They are really for the avatar herself—one spends quite a lot of time gazing at the infinitely tiny prims making up the ring and glasses—prims that are not that noticeable from far away. The shape of the glasses is fantastic.

Finally boots from Onyx LeShelle, a sort of second generation after her first sets that introduced great sculpty work with luscious suede-y textures to the grid. These repeat the formula with a  fashion-forward silhouette. They have been out a while, but they are still great. (We at A Passion for Virtual Fashion are not about the newest things. We are about the best things.)
