Grayness

Grayness

That ambiguous centerpoint
between black and white:
shadow and concrete,
pencil marks, storm-
laden skies, burnished
silver, doves’ feathers.

Grayness

And thus begins a poem written for a dear friend. The poem is all about gray, be it pewter or heather or dove or oyster, pearly or pepper, silver or smoky. This ensemble is an homage to gray. I start with a beautifully drawn tank and skirt from Elie Spot (which I bought at separate times but which went together wonderfully). I love how the sculpty skirt still seems to have movement and lightness, and this is due to the well done shadows in the skirt itself and the clever engineering of the skirt.

Grayness

I top it all with this awesome new style from Elikapeka Tiramisu, which she debuted for 50L Friday. I think women all over SL are popping that on their head and saying, “Dang, I look great!” Face framing, versatile, I anticipate it will become a classic SL style. My skin is a pale one from Alexandra Barcelos, who has heretofore always dropped tan skins on her fans. I think it came out nicely.

Eclecticity

Eclecticity

I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific. —Lilly Tomlin

Eclecticity

When someone new meets me in SL, I want to say, no, I don’t look like this. I am constantly in a state of half-dressed, shoeless, wrong hair, mismatch because I am rifling through my inventory looking for another outfit to make. The truth is, I don’t really know what “Harper” looks like anymore. All I know is she is pretty eclectic.

For example, today’s look is a tan, dark-haired, almost-mysterious beauty. With a well-made top from Anouk Spot (and perfectly fashioned with cap sleeves and a pretty bow at the waist), billowing knickers from nakajima Villota and cute granny boots from Cerberus Noel, our girl has a fashionable flair.

Eclecticity

The beauty of this ensemble is in the details—the eyebrow-grazing straight black hair from Truth Hawks and the smooth skin from Alexandra Barcelos. The real beauties of this look, however, are the accessories. First, the eclectic necklace and bracelet from Danielle Astonia with their varied beads and layers of leather wrapped to make a terrific look. Then there are the nails and rings from Chrome Runner, which fit almost perfectly and with a lot of versatility. The set includes a script that allows you to turn on up to five various rings on each finger. I am impressed.

Eclecticism is the word. Like a jazz musician who creates his own style out of the styles around him, I play by ear. ~ Ralph Ellison

By the way, I want to give a shout out to our friends at Linden Lab, especially Oskar (who has put his neck out to let residents chop his head off). It appears that group chat is NOT LAGGING! Muah muah, Seattle and SF!

Distractions

I love the song “Distractions” by Zero 7. The sound of it makes me think of a big white modern house on a beach, waves crashing outside, light bouncing off the tiles of the uncluttered floor.

Distractions

This is the woman who would live there—elegant, expensively clothed. Her top, from Nena Janus, is a silk piece that softly drapes over her soft spa-maintained skin, and tied casually at the waist. Her capris from LeeZu Baxter look like an evolution of Lilly Pulitzer with their baroque pattern and ruffled hem. Stylish and practical little pumps from Elie Spot reveal her rich tastes.

Distractions

She has a subtle tan (but not over the top—this is not Jersey Shore) and well shaped brows courtesy of Inka Mexicola. Her sheer lipstick came from a glossy black tube she purchased from Mocksoup Graves. Her necklace, seemingly simple, is a nice piece she bought from Rob1977 Moonites. It reminds her of a Lalique heart she has  on a silk cord that she got in Paris.

Distractions

I love you, I love you, I love you, I do
I only make jokes to distract myself
From the truth, from the truth.

Lauren at Christmas

Every holiday it’s a new shock. Children you once knew as giggling drooling fat babies are driving cars now. Your oldest niece, Lauren, has brought her boyfriend to the Christmas party this year. He’s tall and lanky, a nice enough young man. What alarms you, really, is that Lauren, this little girl who once asked you to help her wash her hair and whose thin body, ribs showing, shivered as you wrapped a towel around her, who proudly wore a tiny blue spangled dress you bought her, who beamed when you took her to see the Nutcracker, whose small pink Powerpuff Girl mittens are still in your front closet, left at your house 8 years ago–this same little girl has her fingers entwined with this tall lanky blond man.

Lauren at Christmas

It’s nice to see Lauren has refined her fashion sense in the last few years. Gone are the glittery pink t-shirts, the rainbow socks, the unfortunate green fingernail polish (it was glittering and very bright). Today she comes to the party in a beautiful cotton and lace blouse with floating sleeves from Anouk Spot, of mon tissu, a collective from the artists of Tres Blah and Sand Co. (Nevermind that it’s 12 degrees out—it’s fashion and this is a teenager. Practicality leaves in such circumstances.) Her Maitreya jeans from Onyx LeShelle are rolled up—wait, those are her boyfriend’s jeans. Oh dear. She wears flowered flats from flexagons Villota—more comfortable on her than they ever are on you.

Lauren at Christmas

She is finally getting the hang of makeup and her acne has diminished to reveal a beautiful young woman with glowing skin. The subtle tones that Nena Janus provide do not hurt. Her hair, always pretty, is now wild and free and long and held back by a hair band courtesy of Truth Hawks.

Seeing her looking at her boyfriend adoringly, you are transported back to your first boyfriend, those hungry moments stolen in back seats and empty houses before your parents got home, and your secret dream that that love would last forever. You can almost remember the freshness of your own naivete, the feeling of unlimited strength and potential, the world opening up before you. You pray that she will hold on to this as long as possible, being unbruised, unhurt, and unbroken by the vicissitudes of love and the uncertainties of life.

Lauren at Christmas

Entirely true story.
