Mollena

Mollena

Mollena before I met you
I’d always walked the line
I know you’d leave me
If I let you
The blame’s entirely mine
Cause I could fall into a whole world of trouble over you

~ “Mollena” by James Hunter

Mollena

Remember that girl in school who got every boy’s attention just by being who she was—she exuded some energy, some spirit and life that turned boys’ eyes? I knew several girls like this. As years passed, their stories always turned out to be a sad for whatever reason. Despite being able to capture any boy’s attention, they always chose the worst ones—the bad boys—and it always turned for the worse. No one can sustain that kind of energy forever.

My Mollena here is in tribute to the beauty who captured the boys’ attention. All sorts of boys fell into a world of trouble over her. From her slinky tank top from Betty Doyle (a great separate that can span tons of looks—from retro to contemporary) to little black capris from Ivey Deschanel, Mollena has a look that’s rockin’. Accessories from Dick Wiesel (who has this belt out in color change) and Nyte Caligari make the look. And of course, high heels from Teresa Republic turn cute into sexy.

Mollena

The real story here is the skin and hair. First, this skin from Helyanwe Vindaloo is fresh and pretty—youthful but not kewpie-doll. The eyeliners in this series are fantastic—I opted for this modified cat-eye, which looks smokin’ hot without being over made-up on this pale skin. My hair is from Kavar Cleanslate’s newest color set—Evolution. I love how he includes roots with the hair—we all have them as the hair grows out and lightens as it gets long. The style reminds me of that girl in school—she wore it short and feathered and sassy just like this. (She’s divorced with three kids now. *sigh*)

A Little Bit Independent

A little bit independent in your walk
A little bit independent in your talk
There’s nothing like you in Paris or New York
You’re awfully easy on the eyes
A little bit independent when we dance
A little bit independent toward romance
A bit of sophistication in your glance
And yet you’re easy on the eyes

A Little Bit Independent

I spend a lot of time in SL, a “social space,” alone. I am kind of an independent girl. I like to shop alone (because I like to get in and out); I blog alone (no one shining their facelamp on me); I live alone (no one else’s prims to clean up after). And I can have a BIG closet all to myself.

I got this cute outfit out of my closet today to show you the skill that Nyte Caligari has. She has combined great system pieces with a brilliant sculpty on top AND an alpha layer around the torso that takes the mesh breasts out of the equation so the top fits everyone. Nyte has been in SL a long time and she has stayed up with the new design technologies that SL offered so she can make a kickin’ outfit like this and make it look easy.

A Little Bit Independent

My skin is one of Apple May’s newest and I am very charmed. Her rosy cheeks are presumably the “doll like” part of this skin but they are not overwhelming. I love the gentle glow of the skin, the soft highlights on the lips and brow. Apple does not overdodge, which I see on a LOT of skins. Apple has improved her skins leaps and bounds and she is going to be placing herself in the top skins soon, based on this offering.

A Little Bit Independent

Whenever I’m with you alone
You weave a magic spell
And though it be a danger zone
I only know that you’re swell
A little bit independent with your smile
A little bit independent in your style
But how can I help but love you all the while
When you’re so easy on the eyes

Gentle Hour

It’s such a pleasure to touch your skin
To touch your skin
It’s such a pleasure to touch your heart
To touch your heart
I can hardly wait

Gentle Hour

Sometimes I blog rather late and during that time I listen to sweet music like Yo La Tengo and try to assemble a coherent outfit. (I also try to write coherently and find later I did not….) I think I managed to put together a great look with this set, thanks to some great designers. First a great quilted vest from an outfit I got from Paul Lapointe over a slinky sweater that’s new from Nyte Caligari. I love Nyte’s shading and great seams on this sweater and also on the pants that go with this outfit. Finally quilted boots from Monyka Benelli echo the quilting and fur in the vest.

Gentle Hour

My skin is from a newish designer, Scarlett Rage, who has put this and a lighter skin out for free to entice the hordes (thanks, Renee Lowenhart, for the referral). It’s a nice skin with a little over-shading (notice around the eyes and the rear end—not shown here–was kind of dark). It is blessedly free of the over-highlighting I see on some skins. I look forward to seeing more from Scarlett when she fills her shop. (Get goin, girl!) My hair is a wild style held down by a great slouchy beret courtesy of Mr. Truth Hawks.

Blue in Green

The story about the jazz piece “Blue in Green” off the epic album “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis is a convoluted, drama-ridden one. In the story, Miles Davis repeatedly comes off as being a first-class jerk (which is no surprise as he came off as one in general). Nevertheless it is an iconic jazz ballad that thrills people when they hear it. It’s all that jazz needs to be—progressive, melodic, lush, cool, deep but approachable, melancholy. John Coltrane is his best soulful self. Bill Evans’ composition and playing is ground breaking. Paul Chambers lays down the cool. And Miles Davis is all the best he can be, which is pretty damn wonderful. (Far better than I have written about jazz so don’t expect me to be articulate here.)

The composition of “Blue in Green” as with the other music on the album came from Miles Davis sketching out notes on a napkin (literally) and getting in a studio with the players and going at it, each bringing his best to it and each playing to the new idea of modal jazz. SL can be the same kind of locus where people get together and riff on the medium, coming up with some brilliant and soul-touching work.

Kind of Blue

This outfit is a composition of sexy elegance. First we have the work of Nyte Caligari with its great system pieces (all crisp and clean and imaginative—so many tops in SL are the same old thing) and sexy silhouette. Look closer and you see the belt around the hips fits perfectly, the prim on the bottom of the sweater makes it a long sweater but not that frumpy long sweater I see too much of, the crossed pieces of fabric in back are rendered perfectly on the system piece. This is  very skilled work that comes off as effortless.

Kind of Blue

I insisted on wearing a Gala Phoenix skin with this outfit. I think it’s because I have never felt that Gala’s skins could ever quite make it to a sophisticated look but her latest line has proven me wrong, and I wanted to show that. Her skins have generally come off as adolescent and dewy and baby-faced to me. I saw their artistic merit but could not totally feel the love. That was until she came out with her Yum set recently, and she took out much of gimmicky stuff that put me off in the past—the anxiety eyebrows, the freckles, the pores, the dewy overdone lips. This new line can be worn with pride by grown women with its smoother skin, sophisticated lip colors and understated eyes. I did pop a monica Outlander makeup on the tattoo layer on to play up the eyes a little more. Gosh, I love that tattoo layer.

Kind of Blue

still, there is something here, that, perhaps, needs explaining
beyond the hopelessness of miles, the light at the end of a midnight tunnel
~ “Poem Reaching For Something” by Quincy Troupe (biographer for Miles Davis)

(And no, he doesn’t mean Miles Davis in this poem when he talks about “miles.” He means distance.)

The weather’s still warm but any afternoon it might turn a little chilly, so this little dress from Nyte Caligari is a perfect choice. Under the cute shrug is a spaghetti strap top. Wear the shrug to walk to your destination; shrug it off when it gets warm. I love Nyte’s simple basic styles—she was one of the first to offer casual outfits and separates on the grid and she still knows how to do it. The knee socks add a sexy and warm touch.

I wear a necklace from Adria Joubert, who is one of the featured designers at the 2010 Jewelry Fair. It’s a simple piece—a pendant, but do you need much more here? My hair is from the 10-10-10 going on at 10 stores on the grid. This is Truth’s offering for all comers—the simple and perfect Padma. (Hint: his terrific tanks are being offered at Callie Cline’s place—you don’t need to go to Truth for the hair either—it’s in all the vendor’s for the 10-10-10 event.)

My favorite part of this outfit are my shoes, which are new from Fallingwater Cellardoor. Another one of those veterans of the grid, Fallingwater has always offered beautiful practical shoes—shoes that make outfits work, shoes that are not encumbered by 100 scripts or bling or flashiness. They are elegant, sometimes funky, always wearable. This t-strap is no exception (and thank you for making a t-strap, Fallingwater, because I am always looking for a good one). Look closely (as you would a fine shoe.. a Manolo Blahnik, as my friend KK does..). Smell the leather. See the fine craftswomanship.
