If 6 Was 9

Now, if 6 turned up to be 9,
I don’t mind, I don’t mind…
White-collar conservatives flashing down the street
Pointing their plastic finger at me.
They’re hoping soon my kind will drop and die,
But I’m gonna wave my freak flag high . . . HIGH!

If 6 was 9

The one thing about being a resident of SL is that you’re kind of … different. Now we see lots of people coming to our side slowly, what with their little avatars and their gaming and their funky email names, but really, we’re a little on the edge here. That’s reflected in our avatar looks sometimes. We just don’t walk around SL looking ordinary.

This time I have put on a slinky sexy dress and given it some edge. This is new from Solange Cerveau, the original queen of silks in SL (the best, bar none). With its lacy texture, it still comes off as pretty but it’s also wickedly sexy with its short skirt and satin decolletage. The dress comes in a bazillion colors… ok, 20 but that seems like a lot to me.

My up-to-there boots are from Morphine Janick, which I recently got at her winter sale. I can’t say enough about the construction of these boots—the supple and sexy black suede, the laced up back, the silhouette of the boots on long long legs. I feel fierce in these boots in a very good way.

If 6 was 9

I have donned the skin offered by Monicuzza Babenco for the Dressing Room this week. I really love Monicuzza’s skins because they have an up-close realness that is attractive and sexy. The glittering shimmering colors of the makeup are absolutely fantastic and give my edginess a touch of ethereal beauty.

If 6 was 9

I’ve got my own life to live
I’m the one that’s gonna have to die
When it’s time for me to die
So let me live my life the way I want to.

Rara Avis

Rara avis in terris nigroque simillima cycno. ~ Juvenal

The rare bird shows her face more often in SL. It’s a place that attracts interesting and amazing women—women who are not afraid of technology, women who want to exercise their creative and intellectual minds, women who believe in a bigger world beyond them, reachable by pixels and words.

Rara Avis

For the rare bird, the designs of Kimmera Madison are a joy. Every single piece of Kimmera’s is new and refreshing—she doesn’t rely on old outfits and rebuild and redo. She enjoys exercising her creative energies in SL, using all her skills to make pieces that are well-constructed and interesting. The best part of this dress is the skirt, which has a weird alpha sculpty thing going on which could kill the dress, but Kimmera actually uses it to her advantage, decorating the surfaces with an embossed texture that looks terrific.

Rara Avis

I donned a cutting edge hair from Olli Braveheart to make the look a bit edgier (and to keep it all under the stylish hat Kimmera made. My skin is one of Minnu Palen’s mixed with the tattoo lipstick from another skin. Since she did not color the edges of the lipstick with a skin tone (or not that I could discern), I could easily overlay the lipstick from my Lola Sunkissed fatpack over the Estelle light skin. I have seen some tattoo lipsticks employ the skin tone to refine the edges, I presume, and that always turns out to be a fail. This worked really well.

Life In the Age of Gaga

If Lady Gaga ever enters Second Life (which is highly improbable), she would find herself at home. Her psychics-defying outfits, her outre and untouchable sexuality, her “alienness,” as James Parker calls it in his great essay, “The Last Pop Star,” in this month’s Atlantic.

If Lady Gaga ever walked into SL, I would take her directly over to Eshi Otawara and say, “RL Diva, meet SL Diva.” And I would tell Eshi, “Have at it.” Something would happen, and I lay odds it would be something good.

Life in the Age of Gaga

Eshi’s latest outfit, a nod to feminist representation because it’s an artistic take on a female body part (it’s called the “Deadly Kitten Dress”—get it?), would suit Lady Gaga just fine. How often have we seen the giant male “attachment” in SL, the one the newbies wear running around Neva’s, poking everything in sight, the one that gets constructed over and over again in buildings and forums and blogs (I am speaking somewhat metaphorically here, of course). Isn’t it time we took the female avatar for what it is and make her show what she’s got?

Life in the Age of Gaga

That little gem dangling in the middle there? Yeah, it’s what you think it is. The folds of replicated sculpties surrounding the ensemble and textured with satin ruching? Yep. The furry fronds all around? Yep, those too. Eshi has set the flexi on them so that they take forever to fall into place—kind of like the slow opening and response of the organ which they are meant to decorate. This isn’t slambamthankyouma’am. Eshi, just like Lady Gaga, keeps giving us a great show. And just like Lady Gaga, there’s a lot more to it than shock value (though that does play in).

Life in the Age of Gaga

So what are we to make of this overt representation? And how is Eshi like Lady Gaga? They are both women, women whose aim is to take their visibility, make art of it and make more of it than has ever been done before. (This is why Parker calls Lady Gaga “The Last Pop Star” in his article. He thinks she will never be topped. I am not sure Eshi will either.)

A friend asked me today what “smexy” meant. I assumed that it was a combo of “smart” and “sexy.” The Urban Dictionary confirmed my assumption.

It’s a perfect description for JB Gazov’s newest offering—a smexy black leather corset made of separate sculpty pieces layered over system pieces, all offered with a great resizing hud. Between the seductive silhouette, the sensual leather textures, and the truly smart HUD, this corset is a the new generation of smexy lingerie for women in SL. I will note that you should not wear all layers of the system pieces—doing so leaves an odd shadow around the neck.

Note the HUD adjusts and positions the straps, cups, and ribbon on three different axes. I found the outfit fit almost perfectly upon wearing, though I had to push the ribbon in substantially. (I am guessing he left it out there so it didn’t get buried in the avatar.)

Look closely. Can you believe those are prims I am wearing on top? Now that you have taken a gander at that, reluctantly drag your eyes up to my face. Yes, my pretty face, courtesy of Tuli Asturias.  And check my tousled hip hair from Olli Braveheart. Hey, my eyes are up here!

Sometimes you just want to look fantastic. Nothing more than that. You just want to strut around in something completely impractical, bringing the attention down upon yourself.

Purple Passion

Take a trip over to djod Karu’s store, Diram, and get a gander at all the Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Britney take offs and take your pick. I chose this one with its four different bottoms (pants, two stocking styles, and nothing at all) to take a strut around the sims. With the wicked leather-textured jacket, great sculpty prims, and flexi garters hanging down (those alone were worth the outfit), I can strut my stuff all over the grid.

Purple Passion

Pair it with skin from Tuli, boots from Bax, delicious nails I got for almost nothing at a hunt on the Starlust sims, and great poses from Fanny Willis, and I am good to go.

I feature a rock n roll hair from Olli Braveheart, whose store I found while doing the Crazy Arse Hair Hunt. Olli screwed up the hunt item (didn’t set it for sale and now did and rehid it and I am too arsed to search again), but I did notice the fine hair on the wall and got this topper, which puts just the right amount of edge on the look.
