Batting 500

Today marks my 500th post (according to WordPress). This could be the point where I say, “Sorry guys. I am done.” Or could be the time when I radically change the blog. I will be doing neither, since this sort of snuck up on me and frankly, I don’t have the wherewithal to make any big changes. Things seem to be steaming along of their own momentum.

I will give you some statistics: If you have read my blog since day one, your brain has been exposed to 1700+ photos. You have seen approximately 2,700 slurls. As of this writing, there have been 999 comments. (Ha!) You have read approximately 200,000 words (based on a sampling of my blogs, I guessed about 400 words per average). (Uh, hello, according to sources I have checked, a novel is at least 50,000 words. I have written four novels, albeit kind of mediocre ones. A PhD thesis is about 100,000 words. I have written two but still have not gotten a grant.. ha!)

Batting 500

In celebration, I dressed up. This dress from maizon Rayna is a perfect choice because it has so many things I love—fashion combined with design combined with artistry. Start with the bodice: the texture of the material, probably a crepe de chine, runs over the very simple bodice and into the full skirt. She uses it in the gloves and then runs it into the fabric roses adorning the bodice and the gloves and around the waist. I can HEAR the material moving when I wear this dress because it is so evocatively rendered. Look closely at the back and you can SEE the hook and eye on the top and the zipper on the bodice. The prims are perfectly made and proportioned–the system pieces are clean. Just beautiful. Why does maizon know how to work these fine details in? She does fashion design in real life in Italy.

Batting 500

My perfect makeup is from Nena Janus. Her skin seems to fit many shapes—I have tested to check—and that’s really important. We don’t want to all look alike—I certainly don’t. Her lips are not so overdone or done in a frowny fashion so that my slight smile doesn’t show; her eyes are beautifully made up and not garish; her eyebrows are well shaped and realistic. My earrings are from Shea Paule, inspired by a set he did for a friend. These drops are classic and rich without being ostentatious. He JUST put them on Marketplace, transfer. They are a perfect gift for your loved one.

Batting 500

Each day is the first day of the rest of your blog. Onwards I sally forth to write another 500 *sigh*

Meetings

I have been attending lots of meetings lately.

Meetings

For meetings, it’s best to leave off the bling and the tight revealing miniskirt and the fringed bra. It’s best to be remembered for your contributions and not your apparel. That’s why I wear this pretty but conservative ensemble which starts with the jacket from MariaElena Barbosa’s Marlene set. It has elements that are photosourced and it’s well constructed with a peplum skirt and smart cuffs. My skirt is a pretty one from como Setsuko, who has a whole gatcha full of these skirts. Shoes are a conservative and pleasing silhouette from Fallingwater Cellardoor. (I just love Fallingwater’s shoes—they are classy and versatile. I could see this pair working with a very sexy outfit just as easily.)

Meetings

My skin is from Kira Ahn’s sale at dekade. I really liked the Vivienne set in the Bardot line. It’s sophisticated, mature and beautiful with a variety of makeups. Pick it up before Kira’s sale ends because once it’s gone, I presume it’s gone. Earrings are pretty little baubles from Delora Starbrook and I pulled my hair up in a ponytail from Parvarti Monday. Easy peasy.

Red Letter Day

When I am gone, I hope it is said, “Her clothes were scarlet, and her blog was read!” (Adapted from a quote by Hilaire Belloc)

Scarlet

Red is one of my favorite colors to wear. It looks good on Harper and on her driver in RL. It connotes intensity, vibrancy, happiness (in the East), power and action. Nicky Ree’s newest dress, based on a design by Yves Saint Laurent (and quite beautifully inspired), is a deep gorgeous red that suits me perfectly.

Nicky has really pushed herself with this design and shows her ingenuity and skill throughout. First she starts with a sheer blouse topped by a jacket and enhanced with a sheen in the texture that lends the material richness. She takes that sheerness another whole level with her sheer sleeves, which are a brilliant touch. Her slit skirt, with the slit system skirt and slit system pants make the slit skirt perfect—she does everything right through all the layers.

Scarlet

My skin is from Aida Ewing, who has recently come out with this line of skins. Aida’s work is developing a sophistication that is going to put her in the A-list of skin makers very soon. Her make-ups are daring but pretty. She is balancing the eye make-up with the lips now and her eyebrows are lovely. I look forward to seeing what Aida makes in the future.

Scarlet

My very hot shoes are new from Kuranosuke Kamachi. With the combo ribbons AND the leather strap, they come off very “real” and fashionable. The shoes come with a hud for color changing and changeable toe nails plus toe rings. The best detail on the shoes is the platform and the leather straps in my opinion. They make the shoe fantastic.

Owlishness

I met Owly Indigo.. hrm.. I don’t remember how I met Owly. She just kind of appeared in my SL and is a great person to know. A leader of community of fun-loving and poetry-reading people, she is always there with a joke, a funky thought, an anecdote about her Owlette, and a bird. Yes, she always has a bird on hand—whether it’s for SL7B or her blog or.. well, my blog. I asked Owly to explain her Owlishness and she accommodated me quite beautifully.

The crow wished everything was black; the owl, that every thing was white. – William Blake

Owlishness

When Harper asked for contributions to A Passion for Virtual Fashion, she asked for a focus on persona. From the very beginning, my SL persona has been my RL self, with this playfully owlish overlay. I have always thought of Owly Indigo as my RL self and as a female snowy owl. I am comfortable with the idea that this might not make a whole lot of sense. However, I do not roleplay an owl – I rarely wear an owl avatar, I do not perch on the side of a cliff or eat rodents or fight with wolves. Instead, I think of my avatar as a snowy owl in a mostly human form, and many of my avatar adornment choices come from this notion.

This “oldie” dress by Paper Couture, called Pica, makes me feel the most snowy owlish. The floatiness of the white skirt with giant black-edged feathers and the black diamonds on the white bodice mimic and evoke the coloring of a snowy owl perfectly. I certainly don’t think it was the designer’s intention to make a snowy owl dress, but DANG it sure turned out that way!

Owlishness

The choices I make for the base of my human avatar – the skin and hair – are nearly always black or white. I am so white in RL that I’m blue, and I am pale in SL, too. I think of l.fauna’s palest tone as a “natural” pale that is pretty close to white, and sometimes I wear completely white or gray skins. The “Startled White” color at fri.day is the white I definitely consider “my” color – oftentimes when changing hair, I just type “startled” into inventory to find what I want.

Hanging out with me here is the female snowy owl from Animania. See how great we look together!? Birds by Animania are ubiquitous in SL, not to mention pricey and sometimes primmy, but they really are the best in terms of variety, features, and how they look and move.

And what’s with the very non-owlish antlers? They come from Illusions, where there are many many different kinds and sizes of horns and antlers. And how, exactly, do they fit with the owl theme? Well. They don’t. I just love antlers. Wearing them makes me feel happy and complete. I think nearly everyone in SL has something they wear like that – maybe it’s a piece of jewelry, a mechanical arm, a crown, a fluffy cat’s tail, a certain hairstyle, a collar, or fangs. This is one of the things I really love about SL, the ability to create a completely unique avatar from the millions of choices out there.

So what do you wear on your av that makes you … you?

20,000 Leagues

“The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.” ~ Jules Verne

20,000 Leagues

It’s clear Eshi Otawara needs a trip to the beach. She has come out today with a set of gowns based on being in the ocean, near the floor—20,000 leagues under. With her fantastic Japanese-influenced fish and fronds of kelp, she has constructed a dress of fantasy, complete with rising bubbles (courtesy of Arminasx Saiman) and a beautifully constructed sea urchin hat. She has made a limited edition version of this dress as well.

20,000 Leagues

The skin is from Brendon Papp, who has recently come out with a new set. For some reason I like to wear Brendon’s skins with Eshi’s work. They are delicate and otherworldly—a good counterpoint to Eshi’s bold work.

I’m a Little Teapot

I’m a little teapot,
Short and stout,
Here is my handle,
Here is my spout,
When I get all steamed up,
Hear me shout,
Tip me over and pour me out!

I'm a Little Teapot

I cried while I sang “I’m a Little Teapot” when I graduated from preschool. I looked out into the big audience of smiling parents and could see strangers everywhere–everyone except my parents (who were there but standing the back where it was too dark for me to see). There’s a whole metaphor there, a poem, (and probably two years of therapy) but I won’t get into it. And perhaps it’s an apt story about being a newbie in SL. (You enter, knowing no one, and stare out at a whole bunch of very strange strangers. It’s the ultimate in performance anxiety.)

What brought the song to mind was this cute little dress with its blue and white chintz pattern made by Quinlan Quimby. I loved the shape of the dress with the shirred sides and sheer underskirt. The textures Quinlan uses are soft and shiny and very perfect for this outfit. Had she extended it to ballgown length, it would make perfect sense in a historic RP sim. However, she has opted for a more contemporary silhouette with the short skirt.

I'm a Little Teapot

I wear it with a new skin from Lorac Farella, part of her Tomorrow line. I really like this set with its more subtle and burnished make-ups and painterly details. Lorac includes a wee beauty mark near the lips, a lovely touch. The porcelain skin is a perfect piece for this silly little teapot trope I have going.

I'm a Little Teapot

Finally new and funky boots from LeeZu Baxter, done under her own label. One thing LeeZu does so fantastically well is create artistic textures with subtle shadowing and wild colors. The boots, the torn stockings from Canimal Zephyr, the cameo from Jackal Ennui (with the BEST ironic store name on the grid, imho) all add up to a cute little outfit, fit for this teapot (who has been known to get steamed up).

I'm a Little Teapot

I’m a very special teapot,
Yes, it’s true,
Here’s an example of what I can do,
I can turn my handle into a spout,
Tip me over and pour me out!
