Knit Happens

I have recently taken up knitting. I had tried before and never quite got the hang of it but this time I am rocketing through an Irish cable scarf. An SL friend has a partner who likes to knit; when she found out I was taking a class, she said, “Our evil plan is working.” Then someone showed me ravelry.com and gosh, it was all over…

Going to Maria Gherardi’s store, I was reminded of what I want to learn to knit. First there are the stockings. I really need to learn to knit socks. Maria has done a terrific job with these, using a checkerboard pattern with a standard ribbed cuff (done k2, p2.. I think). The gorgeous shrug is done in a chain (which turns out not to be that hard to do if you have a cable needle, incidentally) in a glorious shade of “petroleum.” She does more with it, though, by making the sleeves a sort of puffy shape that adds a lot to the shape of the silhouette.

Underneath is a little outfit with “jhodpur” shorts that has a great funky shape and beautiful texturing. Maria’s clothing comes in a variety of colors—that is her forte—rich, beautiful tones in a wide variety. In fact, it’s kind of difficult to choose when you get there, she provides such a palette of choices.

This glowing skin from Fergie Finesmith has the bold eyeshadow colors I wanted and the skin tone that goes well with such saturated hues. I top it with one of Truth Hawks’ new hairstyles, this with the streaks set on blonde—I chickened out with the pink streaks. And I love this necklace from Jon Ree. He does absolutely gorgeous turquoise work.

I bet you’re all wondering what you’re getting for Christmas this year…. Well, coffee cozies, of course.

Knitting is very conducive to thought.  It is nice to knit a while, put down the needles, write a while, then take up the sock again.  ~Dorothy Day

Love Letter to Japan

From the west to the east I have flown to be near you
I have come all this way to be close, to be here with you
And now, all my heart I will lay down precisely at your feet

Love Letter to Japan

My love letter to Japan involves, as one would expect, a kimono, but this one is inspired by my recent new thing, watching drama on Crunchyroll on my iPad (thanks so very much, Erehwon). Watching the funky fashions on these shows, I am reminded that the kimono is probably a little fanciful, especially this gorgeous one from Sequanna Kidd, even with it’s short skirt and sweetly tied stockings. Nevertheless, the cute granny boots from Cerberus Noel would fit right in. (I have been watching Prince Hours. The star, Se7en, is cute.)

Love Letter to Japan

I show one of Truth Hawks’ new hair pieces, with the hairband set to red and the streaks set to red. It’s gotta all be red. Especially to match the lipstick from this beautiful skin from Fergie Finesmith. I have shown Fergie’s work before, which is an amalgamation of purchased and open source pieces. The faces are lovely with bold makeups.

Love Letter to Japan

My beloved, oh my sweet
All the gifts you have given me
The patience and the peace,
Cherry blossoms and the candy,
I am yours, I am yours
For as long, for as long as you will have me

I Could’ve Been Miss Punta Blanca

I could’ve been Miss Punta Blanca
I could’ve but I didn’t want ta
I think I could’ve been a winner
if I’d gone dancing after dinner
I could’ve rhumba’d by the poolside
I could’ve samba’d with the tour guide
instead I took a motorcycle ride
with my friend Mike
this guy I really like
he rents the motorbikes

I Could've Been Miss Punta Blanca

Miss Delora Starbrook reminds me of Miss Punta Blanca. She could’ve but she didn’t want ta. Her pretty sundresses that just came out are perfect for a Miss. Delora has a thing with the sheen—her fabrics are silky sheeny soft. And she has included a pretty flower motif on these dresses. Her textures and system pieces are solid—they have to be. Usually she is dressing a much more scantily clad woman.

I Could've Been Miss Punta Blanca

I show this pretty frock with a skin from Fergie Finesmith, who solicited my review out of the blue. I like how Fergie is up front about the source of her skins—a mix of “non free templates by Evely Lane (EVANA skin) and free templates provided by Eloh Eliot and several free photosources around the net.” Can I make a comment on this? Not really. The skins are pretty, not outre or grungy. Very clean and nice and a good lower-cost alternative.

I Could've Been Miss Punta Blanca

I’ll sing you a song
right in your ear
on this beautiful Cuban moonlit night
