“Blue is the only color which maintains its own character in all tones… it will always stay blue.” ~ Raoul Dufy

Blue Belle

Fashionart opens tomorrow and GraceHaddington is contributing a few gorgeous pieces, including this amazingly patterned dress and these high heels. While Grace is using template mesh for these pieces, what makes them work are the great patterned textures. I really get tired of solid colors all the time. Grace has a great sense of proportion for her patterns too. Both the dress and the shoes come with texture-change HUDs so you get several choices. (If you go to Fashionart looking for the dress, she shows it in a golden/yellow pattern.)

Blue Belle

What makes my Blue Belle truly belle, of course, is this new gorgeous skin from Umazuma Metaluna with her tintable tattoo lips. Uma’s skins are expressive, unique and almost painterly with a beautiful artistic touch with an elegant façade. Truth Hawks and Maxi Gossamer are participating in Collabor88’s Rockabilly theme this go around with great retro-made-modern looks. The wavy ‘do that Truth has meshed up includes a color change bow that you do not need to wear (it looks just as good without) and comes in several sizes for your varying chest sizes *ahem*. Maxi Gossamer made these darling cat-eye glasses with color change for the wings, the shades and the lenses for a variety of looks.

Mrs. Veronique Portsbee

Mrs. Veronique Portsbee

During World War II, several technologies were developed—ENIAC, the atomic bomb, and unknown to all but a few Americans, prosthetic robotics. This technology, developed to help injured soldiers, aimed to utilize the robotics recently developed in an underground bunker positioned under the football field of Wichita State University. Mrs. Veronique Portsbee of Garden City, Kansas, become the test recipient of the robotic legs that were developed after her legs were lost to an unfortunate accident during her work for the French Resistance.

She and her family were sworn to silence, and she was unable to leave her home using the legs to preserve secrecy. However, she enjoyed a relatively happy and quiet existence in her beautiful new “Space Age” postwar home, given to her with many other generous benefits, by the Government of the United States.

Mrs. Veronique Portsbee passed away last Wednesday. Her obituary said, “Mrs. Veronique Portsbee, age 89, joined her husband, Harold, in eternal rest. She is survived by her children, Alan Portsbee and Barbara Knutson, grandchildren Rebecca, Steven, Renee, and Dawn, and great-grandchildren Connor and Tyler. She was active in the Garden City Women’s Club and donated time at the Lee Richardson Zoo. Memorials may be sent to the Zoo.”

Her legs, and the technology that created them, were buried quietly with her in Valley View Cemetery.

These rare photos, taken by her son with his new 35mm camera in her kitchen in Garden City, Kansas, were processed on authentic Kodachrome. Her dress, purchased by her husband to celebrate her 33rd birthday, is a boutique item from Neferia Abel. With its beautiful skirt and bolero over a lace bodice, cinched at the waist by a smart belt, it is the perfect dress for a woman in the mid-50s. She wears her favorite pearls from Sonatta Morales and of course, her prosthetic legs, custom engineered for her comfort by Hern Worsley.

Mrs. Veronique Portsbee

Her hair was styled and colored perfectly by Kin Keiko in a curly, nicely shaped cut. (She does not wear the prosthetics when people come to her home. A blanket covers what’s left of her bodily legs.) Her makeup, courtesy of Monicuzza Babenco, is a splurge—she loves to look pretty, especially when she can show off her baby blues from Ikon Innovia. When all is said and done, it was a good life.

Read and listen to this much more inspirational story about Hugh Herr, a double amputee and director of the Biomechatronics Group at MIT about the development of real prosthetic devices.

Isn’t it odd how things in SL can be so evocative and tangible? It seens a kind of a “duh” statement but the things you see in SL really can remind you of RL things. This is a deeper idea that it seems at first. I could get all esoteric, start talking about semiotics, poststructuralism, etc. But instead I would like to talk about my grandma.

My grandma (my dad’s mom) was a tall thin graceful woman (who passed many of her genes on to my dad that somehow missed me). She liked fine things but didn’t have enough of them in her life so she was careful with the ones she had. I remember her entire closet was filled with clothes that dated back from the 20s and 30s, covered carefully in fabric to keep them in good condition. So going through her closet was like going through a history of women’s fashion.

She would have definitely worn an ensemble like this. In fact, I remember she had a blouse very similar to this one, but not so bright—navy blue I believe. This one is made by Antonia Marat and in her typical nod to retro, she has the big polka dots, the rolled up sleeves, and the collar. I show it with a slim skirt from Onyx LeShelle.

This skin from Hart Larsson reminds me of my grandmother too..when she was younger—she was beautiful. She had beautiful skin. She kept her hair about this length, but not with a bow in it. And it wasn’t red. She always had her hands manicured, and these nails from London Armidi reflect the sort of nails a woman who takes care of a family and her home would have.

The reason I have gone on this trip down memory lane is because of these shoes from Emma Gilmour. Spectator pumps! Emma’s work on these shoes is exquisitely detailed. Look at the buckle. Check out the cork soles. And finally those punched decorative details. My grandmother had some awesome shoes, especially spectator pumps. I remember them quite well.

I didn’t inherit her thinness but I did inherit her love of style… ;)

Heat It Up

We’re starting to hit the hotter days of summer. I hate closing the windows and turning on the AC. I suffer through what seems like 6 months of snow so I can have the luxury of opening the windows 2 or 3 months a year. So the windows are staying open. Just means I have to dress skimpier ;)

Heat It Up

This sweet little ensemble from Trinetty Skytower might cause a little heat inside, for the right person ;) With its lacy bodice, Moulin Rouge gloves, and bowtied gartered thigh high stockings, it’s gonna take someone’s mind off the heat outside and put it were it belongs.

Heat It Up

I chose to style it in a more retro fashion, with one of Lion Jonesford’s newest skins as a base. With its red lips and heavily made up eyes, it’s seductive and glowing. Hair is a retro wavy page boy from Truth Hawks. Especially cute are the curly bangs.

Bathing Beauty

I just want to know.. in those old movies where the ladies dressed up in swimsuits that seemed to wrap their bodies up like little sausages and they wore nail polish and lipstick and high heels and bows in their hair… were they for real?

Bathing Beauty

I sure hope not because that’s a lot to live up to. However, in SL we’re able to do it without it seeming so improbable. In fact I am doing it with this darling little new suit from monica Outlander. With its sparkling sequined fabric, its modest cut and retro neckline, even Esther Williams would have been proud to seen in this. (Well maybe not so modest, seeing it from the back…)

Bathing Beauty

Then we have the vintage piled-up-high ‘do from Betty Doyle with a sweet bow (color-change, don’tcha know). And the skin is a new one from sachi Vixen, who recently redid the entire Adam n Eve store. With its cute can (as seen above), luscious red lips, and lustrous tan (from hours sitting on a lounge chair with a pina colada), this is an ideal skin for every day use or more glamorous pursuits.
