Where I’ve Been

Where I've Been

I hate those blogs that start out with “I know I haven’t blogged in a week but I have been busy cleaning my sock drawer and solving world hunger.” Well, I have been doing neither. I have been working on Fashion for Life. If you don’t know about this or don’t know I have been working on FFL, well.. where have YOU been?

Where I've Been

I have been shopping as much as anyone. I walk to place a kiosk and something catches my eye and soon enough I am right clicking everything in sight. (The gachas are particularly captivating to my chagrin and the pain of my inventory.) Mami Jewell is offering this absolutely gorgeous dress as one of her Fashion for Life donations, and I have to say, I was mesmerized. From the deep pink color highlighted with glittering edges to the beautiful sprays of flowers at the shoulder, waist and hip. Come to Fashion for Life to get this dress with 100% of proceeds going to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society!

Where I've Been

I donned one of Pompeja Rossini’s gorgeous Fashion for Life exclusive skins to wear with this dress. I was entranced by its glamorous look and beautiful make ups. My eyes are a pair generously offered in a set from Audrey Lamede. She has donated almost ALL the content in her store for Relay for Life, and it’s a win to get these gorgeous eyes. My hair is a gorgeous updo from Tabata Jewell, another great win for Fashion for Life.

I Dig Egypt

I Dig Egypt

The Accessory Fair to benefit Relay for Life opened this weekend with an elaborate scene straight out of Indiana Jones. Between the catacombs and the mummies everywhere, it has the feel of a movie-set fantasy—you can feel the sand under your feet and marvel at the artistry around you amidst a “dig.” (Though an archaeologist her salt would not let you step one foot in a real dig.)

But let’s face it—that’s not really Egypt. The real Egypt is a much more exciting and interesting place. It’s the home of a 21st-century revolution—the same kind of youth-initiated revolution we saw in the US and Europe in the 60s, at the fall of the Berlin wall in the late 80s, and in Tiananmen Square in the 90s. The revolution is spreading across the area, and we should be excited for them—they are finding self-government and throwing off the shackles of post-colonial corruption and dictatorship.

I Dig Egypt

A Muslim woman in Egypt won’t be wearing skimpy clothes with cats-eye eyeliner–that’s Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra in a movie from the 60s. Your average young woman in Egypt is probably wearing a hijab (which I don’t show here) and a modest but pretty outfit, consisting of a tunic and slacks. This ensemble, from Syngen Sohmers, is a perfect example (and should be because she’s Egyptian). The beauty of fabrics and fashion is not lost on this outfit—the fabric is richly textured with gold accents. Women in Egypt are just as interested in how they look—they just don’t want to show a lot of skin.

I Dig Egypt

It’s the perfect chance to show the beautiful face on the newest skin from Diarmuid Miklos, which is coming out next weekend. With its subtle tones and beautiful makeups (a lot of them running in the pinks, though you can’t see it in this skin), this is bound to be a new smash for Diarmiud. He includes with this set a sculpty ponytail, perfect if you want to keep arc low and fashion high. Mocksoup Graves’ makeups suit his faces really well, and I wear a little tint on my lips from her.

I am also thrilled with Reghan Straaf’s offerings at the Accessory Fair, specifically a set with an “Egyptian theme.” They are truly a treasure to be found in their “Dig.” Reghan has been making beautiful hats forever but now she’s turned her sights to jewelry and I am blown away. I love these malachite earrings with their excellent stone and gold textures. And the bracelet is .. well charming. Each little charm represents a sign of ancient Egyptian culture and while they seem cliched, they are still powerful symbols for the Egyptians who believe in their country, their culture and their future.

I Think Pink

“The very pink of perfection.” ~ Oliver Goldsmith

I Think Pink

Saya Littlething, the creator of Schoen, decided to contribute to Fashion for Life because her father is being treated for cancer of the large intestine. Recently, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan affected her family as well as they live near the epicenter.

Saya continued to support Fashion for Life because cancer was her main concern and the main thing touching her life, earthquake and tsunami notwithstanding. Despite the trouble in her country, she persisted with Fashion for Life, and she has continued to do so by offering this cute jacket as a donation item in her store with all proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society. Her shop is full of cute items, many of them considerably well crafted and great for casual wear for men and women.

I Think Pink

I wear with shoes from Renee Harvy, another FFL offering at her store and skin from Monicuzza Babenco, recently offered at The Dressing Room. My pants are from Anessa Stine, model and now designer, who has taken the DCNY label under her wing and is filling the store with new creations weekly.

Finally, my hair is from the always friendly chiaki Xue, who partnered up with mappy Handrick of ARAI to make this cute style. I saw it on a man the other day and it wasn’t bad, but I sure like it for a girl, especially with its color change hat.

Seeing Stars

Sexy club wear is just not my thing in SL but for many folks in SL, it is the only way to dress—short skirts, thigh highs, teeny tiny tops.

Seeing Stars

Mascha Boa has recently returned to SL and she has brought her unique vision of clubwear back to her many adoring customers. A mix of teeny tiny, leather, and domme with elements of fantasy, such as the star sparkled texture of this outfit. Mascha is generously offering this outfit and several others in donation vendors at her store to benefit the American Cancer Society. She committed to raising 50,000L for Fashion for Life—help her out.

Seeing Stars

I wear a skin from Minnu Palen with this outfit with a bold red lipstick. My intense glittering eyes are from Ikon Innovia, and my great red fantasy hair is a new one from Mirja Mills, who is cranking out amazing new hair week after week.

We have already had the time change where I live and it’s been a great boon to my spirits. It’s great to have daylight last into the dinner hour again.

SarahTheRed Aurbierre is selling this fresh and lovely dress as a Fashion for Life exclusive in her store. Click on the vendor, buy it, and all proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society. I can’t help but gush over this dress, which is light in its texture and movement and provides a simple canvas for dressing up in many different ways.

Spring Forward

That’s why accessorizing is so important. AvaGardner Kungler’s beautiful jewelry set with its exquisite beads and textures pops on a simple background. Lara Hurley’s beautiful skin provides a richness to this look with its deep tone, smooth texture and nuanced highlights. Lara doesn’t overdo it, which makes this skin elegant and understated. Elikapeka Tiramisu’s ponytail with the face-framing short bangs, is a pretty top to this look.

The ultimate accessory are the shoes, of course, which can make or break you. Nardya Rousselot’s lovely new sandals (in gold!), complete this look stylishly. With a delicate little ankle buckle and some of the prettiest toes on the grid, these can go from a more casual look like this to something really dressy in a snap.

House of RFyre at Fashion for Life

Dear Readers:

As most of you may or may not know, I have worked for Raven Pennyfeather for over three years in SL. She is a personal friend as well as an employer. I rarely blog her work in my own blog because I am so familiar with it I feel I can’t speak about it coherently or “objectively.” I have seen the inside of this sausage factory, and I have to tell you, each piece is made with pure love and goodness and joy by Raven. There is no other way to say it. She puts her heart into her creations; they are her vision and her art and she wants so greatly to share this beauty and fun with others in SL.

She has been preoccupied with new vistas in RL so she has not been in SL as much. However we speak on the phone frequently, and she has been supportive and enthusiastic about Fashion for Life. She also didn’t want to see Nevar’s and Ame’s hard work be lost so she was glad when I took it on but she has not been thrilled with not having me available to her. She will be glad when I am back at RFyre (as will I).

I am very emotional about Raven; she has been as dear a friend to me, in RL as in SL, as anyone for the past 3+ years. I couldn’t possibly fit into the blog here or on the Fashion for Life website (where I really should not get mushy and personal), how I feel. So this blog is entirely poorly written, clumsy, and not nearly good enough for what she and her work deserve.

~ Harper

As Fashion for Life closes, we have to give thanks to one of our sim sponsors, for many things. Raven Pennyfeather has always supported the RFL Clothing Fair and Fashion for Life. She made friends with Nevar and Amethyst and has had them to dinner in her RL home several times, supporting their work because she knew it was important and they were her friends. However, two years ago, Raven’s father was diagnosed with breast cancer, rare but not unknown in men. While she ran her business, House of RFyre, she ran from her house to his weekly to assist him (100 miles away), logging on from his home after she had taken him to his chemo treatments, to check her business and design. Raven had always supported RFL, but once his diagnosis came, it became even more important to her. Her donation for being a sim sponsor was entirely selfless—she wanted to put RFyre’s name on this important cause as a personal endorsement, especially as she has seen her father go into remission.

Raven’s support of Fashion for Life has been long-standing, first with Nevar and Ame and now with the new coleads, Harper and Syngen. In fact, Raven sacrificed her assistant, Harper, to FFL and has suffered (supposedly) with Harper so preoccupied. Thank you, Raven, for giving me the time and room to do this.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

It is a great honor to have Raven Pennyfeather be one of the sim sponsors at Fashion for Life. Her generous heart imbues all her work and her dark romantic nature translates to the vision for her work. Consider this couture offering from Raven with its leather jacket on top over a swirling translucent ethereal black skirt and topped with a smart top hat with lace veil. Raven never makes a minimal outfit—she truly wants to give her customers her best and all she can with each ensemble.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

One of Raven’s newer offerings is the Hearts on Fyre series, including this evening gown. Inspired by the designs of Ed Harvy, Raven made her own clothing “tattoo” motifs and carried them to this gown and to more casual sets for men and women. Her colors are rich and luxe.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

Raven has always aimed to fulfill her male customer’s needs as well. In this she has a very romantic vision as well. Her men are dressed in the finest materials—leather, satin, wool, lace. The handsome tux above from her Wintertide series can take a man from ballroom to personal Interview with the Vampire. The more formal Eduoard below with its shorter cut and tails and chained closure and romantic bow tie, can take a man to the most formal affair.

RFyre at Fashion for Life

One last day for Fashion for Life. Today. Get here NOW to get some of these beautiful items and many many more before they disappear and this whole beautiful please is gone!

Enjoy some savings and help the American Cancer Society at the same time. The American Cancer Society helps people in disaster-stricken areas, helping people find care and medication during times of crisis with their already-established network of doctors and caregivers and active Relay for Life groups. Donated money doesn’t sit in ships in docks or accounts waiting for action—it goes to work immediately helping those cancer patients with need.

Donate to the ACS at Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.

10. It’s the right thing to do.

FFL Square 2days

The truth is this: someone in your life, someone you know, will die of cancer. Period.

The chances of someone you know dying of an airplane crash, a civil war, a natural disaster, etc, are much much lower. And since cancer is primarily caused by environmental factors and since cancer is very often preventable, it makes sense to support an organization that targets the causes and prevention of the number two killer in the world—the American Cancer Society.

That is why Fashion for Life exists. It goes beyond being a “fund raiser” to being a community-organized, community-run community event. The emphasis on community is very important because Fashion for Life does not exist solely to make money for ACS; it exists to give tangible proof to cancer survivors and patients IN SL that their fellow residents care. It provides solace for many who have lost loved ones to cancer and provides a community for many who need support, much as the greater SL Relay for Life does. This is what makes it so right.

So if you are considering who you want to throw your support behind, consider throwing it to your friends and loved ones via shopping at Fashion for Life. It’s a great set-up—beautiful sims, great shopping, fund-raising going where you know it will do a lot of good for now and for the future.

10 Reasons to Come to Fashion for Life: Reasons 7 and 8

7. The beauty.

Reason 7

Look at this beautiful dress pixivor Allen is offering in her donation vendor at Fashion for Life. It’s absolutely gorgeous with its sequined textures in silver and great flower accents. Pixivor decided to donate all funds paid for this dress to the American Cancer Society. This beautiful creation is only one of pixivor’s offerings for this worthy cause.

The Fashion for Life sims are stunning and won’t be here forever. The fashions are beautiful as well. Many items are exclusive—they will no longer be available after this fair. The ephemeral nature of these items is like life itself—it doesn’t last forever. The American Cancer Society’s work allows people to enjoy their lives through cancer and after it. It’s a huge thing—having a decent quality of life when your body is fighting cancer. Life is ephemeral—it should be enjoyable.

Feel the joy of life at Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.

8. Around the world in nine sims…. (and not eighty days).

Reason 8

Fashion for Life is literally an around-the-world enterprise. Designers from every continent except Antarctica contributed to the content featured at Fashion for Life. That’s why it’s always a thrill to see the many kinds of fashions that designers contribute, all going to the American Cancer Society, to help their friends around the world fight cancer.

These all deserve to be shown, first because of their beauty, but also because of their price. Vlinder is offering these four pieces as her donation items, all at 150L each. If you have ever hesitated to purchase a sari due to cost this is the time to grab them at such an economical price while helping ACS.

Vlinder travels around east Asia frequently, logging in from internet cafes with her laptop to upload textures and work on designs. She managed to get to Fashion for Life the day before we were due to open, seemingly from a red-eye flight ;)

Reason 8

Reason 8

Reason 8

Syngen Sohmers has also priced her items at an economical price. She is the brilliant designer behind the Irving Penn and Bourke White sims and the gracious person who stepped up to become co-lead and to design the parameters for our gorgeous sims. Per FFL rules, Syngen donated the regular amount to have a store at FFL AND she donated the required number of items. These were all made exclusively for FFL AFTER she built her sims. Whew!

I don’t think Syngen will mind my telling you all that she is Egyptian living in the US, and it was during the harrowing days in Egypt that Syngen managed to design both her sims with all their amazing textures and prims. The Bourke White sim is based on the Porto Marina in Alexandria, her home town, and a place of wonderful memories for her. It was as if in defiance that Syngen built, unable to reach her family initially and glued to the TV as well as the computer screen as she funneled her energies into these builds. She willed Alexandria’s survival and independence through the linking of prims. Her selflessness and strength during a very stressful personal time was amazing.

Syngen represents her Egyptian and Muslim heritage with pride in her clothing. Her Nefertiti was her homage to her homeland, offered generously as a donation for Fashion for Life.

Reason 8

Reason 8

Reason 8

Reason 8

Finally this gorgeous kimono from Sequanna Kidd . Despite the troubles in Japan, Sequanna managed to log on and set up her store, offering this absolutely breathtaking kimono as one of her donation items. In fact, every single one of our Japanese designers was able to set up their stores, despite the disasters in their homeland, focused as they were on this charity and the opportunity to show Japanese strength in the face of adversity.

Reason 8

The work of all these creators reminds us that cancer knows no boundaries, no nationalities, no races. It afflicts people around the world. The American Cancer Society does not just serve North America; it serves people around the world through outreach, education, assistance and support.

Honor these international designers by visiting Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.

10 Reasons to Come to Fashion for Life: Reasons 5 and 6

5. ZOMG the GACHAS! Every item priced 10-100L! Skins, dresses, shoes, accessories! How can you beat that?!

Reason 5

I got all this stuff on the FFL sims. Every stinkin’ thing—the dollies from Beaumont Ryba, the deliciously sexy cheongsam from Azriel Demain, the amazing skin from Kira Paderborn, the gorgeous eyes from Lano Ling, my favorite little kitten heels from Vlinder Reitveld.

Every designer who participated HAD to provide at least 6 items and ALL proceeds from the gacha items go directly to the American Cancer Society. Also, all the gacha items are TRANSFERABLE, so if you get doubles, hand them off to your friends or alts. Better, yet shop and create your own stash of FFL exclusives to trade or give to friends on rez days, birthdays, and at the holidays. It’s win-win in a billion ways. (Get a full listing of gachas here.)

And remember Fashion for Life is win-win, contributing money to the American Cancer Society for cancer research. Many cancers are environmentally caused and are preventable, detectable and treatable. ACS provides education for prevention and detection with their international affiliates, heading off the disaster of cancer every day.

Reason 5

Come to the gacha. Find out why one blogger IM’d us to ask us to eject her because she was “stuck” at the gachas buying. All at Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.

(And yes, I bought all the gacha items myself! And doubles! And entire sets. I HAD to have those Vlintuition shoes in every color!)

6. Pure dead-on sex appeal.

Reason 6

Pair this skin from Kira Paderborn with eyes from Ikon Innovia with silks from the goddess of silks, Solange Cerveau, with feet from Claire Messenger and you have a grand slam look that will knock the socks off your lover (or Master).

These designers know that supporting the American Cancer Society supports life, supports a quality of life for cancer patients and survivors, through difficult news and treatments, through the many uncertainties of encountering cancer.

4. Mer Betta has new mermaid evening gowns and the green are only 200L!

Reason 4

Opal Lei, artist extraordinaire, exquisite beauty, and brilliant mermaid designer has tucked her mermaid tail away in making these gorgeous evening gowns. With two exquisite gowns exclusive to Fashion for Life, you can choose from several other colors as well (including green, which is still only 200L!)

Opal has given generously in the past to Fashion for Life and she will continue to do so because she knows her funds go to the American Cancer Society under the umbrella of SL Relay for Life. Relay for Life, a RL grassroots program from ACS, gives community, support and encouragement to cancer survivors, cancer patients, and their loved ones and caretakers. It’s more than a fund raiser—it’s a community.

Help support the thousands of those affected by cancer who are your fellow residents by coming to Fashion for Life, going on NOW through March 22.
