Tavi Tavi Tavi: An Homage

The news has flown around the internet that Tavi Gevinson is the blogger to read if you want to read about fashion. Only 14 years old, she has become the blogeuse célèbre of fashion, beating out The Sartorialist and Jak & Jil to get a spot in the New Yorker and on their website.

Everyone is curious why Tavi is so popular, but I get it. She is just a girl, in a house in Oak Park, Illinois, who likes to clip photos out of her magazines and make collages and revel in the beauty of her chosen media–fashion. She reminds us not only of our passion for fashion but our passion for something bigger than ourselves when we were young. She reminds us of that plunge into some subject so deeply that it becomes our adolescent obsession.

In homage to Tavi, I wanted to kind of cop her “look,” which is a combo of high fashion and thrift. I have to say, my look came off more thrift than haute, but this is MY homage, ‘k? First I start with my shape, which I shrunk drastically to match Tavi’s RL 4’10”. Then a dress from Canimal Zephyr, which had that sort of thrift-store prettiness and girly, not sexy, shape that Tavi favors (for reason—she’s 14).

Then I put on a bunch of accessories because Tavi does accessories. First the shawl comes attached to an obi that I have modified so it doesn’t show made by cyam Amat, revealing a sort of thriftiness. Then we have the Tavi glasses, modified to remove the little bow in the middle but I left the cute stars on the corners. The armwarmers—she may or may not wear them but they are fun enough I think she would. I layered two pairs of tights—layering is Tavi’s specialty.

I chose Gala Phoenix’s skin because it’s so youthful and as I looked at myself, I really did see Tavi and her freshness in this face, especially her bee stung lips and gentle coloring. The hair, from BlueStarRUI Villota tries to replicate her fading red dye job. Tavi does a lot of hair experimenting on a shorter bob like this one. And the flower poof from Lapipi Camel? Totally Tavi. She loves bows, barrettes and flowers.

Finally, Tavi loves shoes. She has platforms and slippers, pumps and sandals. This is where she doesn’t hold back. I chose Cerberus Noel’s newest shoes to fill the role because their funky, fashionable and youthful square toe and color changable-trim (orange to highlight the arm warmers) plus the fantastic big buckle. The bowed leg warmers from Radio Signals adds the final touch with their whimsical and warm scrunchiness. I did modify the bow to be more olive than was presented in the color change menu that came with the bows.

Topsy Turvy

A beautiful day today. We’re going out to buy plants today, especially a tomato plant we can put in one of those Topsy Turvy things. It’s a casual day, full of the topsy turvy joy of springtime and gardening.

Topsy Turvy

A tank top, some cargo pants, sandals, and I am set to poke around in the aisles of plants and ground covers. The tank top and pants are supplied by Aree Lilibub—cute and versatile. The cargos, incidentally, are finished off with a cuff but I forewent those in favor of the tie up sandals from elka Lehane, which I bought as a fat pack for a mere 200L.

Topsy Turvy

Nothing wrong with throwing on a bunch of jewelry on, especially if all you’re doing is walking among the flowers and picking only one little tomato plant out. I dug in my bauble box and came up with an assortment of pieces to make this bohemian nature lover more believable. (Who says I have to get dirt under my fingernails—isn’t that what gloves and gardeners are for?) Trinkets from Polyester Patridge, Kiki Cunningham, Sari Telling, and Maeve Mortlock make me jingle as I poke around in the impatiens. (And who said we didn’t have enough attachment points?)

Bohemian Rhapsody

I love the mix and match of SL. We are given several layers, flexis, various attachment points, sculpties, and even color-changing shoes!

Bohemian Rhapsody

The best part is that I can dress as I please every single day. Today I felt bohemian so I mixed and matched an outfit here using elements from fri.day as well as Sari’s. First we have the great short jacket from Darling Monday with its almost retro elements, nicely tailored with a ruffle around the neck (and fits great). Then we have Sari Telling’s funky and fun prints with their Indian influence. I love these pants (though the system piece is no mod—argh—can’t shorten them).

Bohemian Rhapsody

Women all over the grid were heard to squeal when Tricky Boucher announced he was releasing a new skin for women. I, of course, ran post haste to get a few. And was I happy I did. Following on the beauty of his Alyson skin, Elle has a more mature demeanor. No freckles now and a decidedly sophisticated and sexy face.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Finally smexy shoes from nut Barak. What bums me out is that I went to Orange Creations probably a day before these came out. But I won’t complain. The shoes are luscious with beautiful toes (it really is all about the toes) and fashionable styling. I love the zippers in back.

Bohemian Rhapsody

I will say I had a little trouble matching these in world (as usual). I used the setting they told me to use for Belleza’s Elle. I am wondering when skin makers will come out with shoes to match their skins. Would make sense, don’t you think?

Any way the wind blows
Doesn’t really matter to me, to me

Make Love, Not War

This is one of my favorite things to say…”Make love, not war.” I usually applies it to incendiary blogs or discussions about shoes in the fashion bloggers’ group. This sweet organic ensemble brought me closer to my hippie roots.

Make Love, Not War

Sari Telling—woo! What a colorful store that woman has! I wandered over there after having seen her in at RFL’s Clothing Fair earlier this year. Sari has truly groovy things to buy in spectacular colors at great prices. I chose this ensemble out of the *many* things I purchased at her store. She’s got it all—from bracelets to henna to dreadlocks to skirts and tops to armwarmers, all in her characteristic bright colors.

Make Love, Not War

Wild hair goes with wild colors, and I chose Queue Marlowe’s beautiful Madison hair (which has served me in so many instances). Her curly texture is the grid standard for curly and this one is the one we all wish we had in real life—bouncy, curly, wild and sexy. (Like Cylindrian Rutabaga’s RL hair!) Pulse’s sweet freckled new Harmony/Mona Lisa skin suits this look with its freshness and youth. The curl on the edge of the lips makes me look a little knowing but also happy.

These exquisite shoes were hand fashioned by moon Ling. I have tried to get really close so you can see how intricate they are. They are like foot jewelry. She carries them in TWENTY SIX colors. No excuse not to get a pair.

Stroll Down the Rue de Rivoli

Ever see those beautiful young ladies you see walking around in every city, casually fashionable, beautiful in their hurry to yoga class/art studio/poetry reading? They throw on whatever’s on the floor and it all goes together and looks fantastic. I want to be one of those girls. So I made myself one of them. The only thing I am missing is a huge handbag and brown cardboard-sheathed cup of coffee or bottle of Evian water.

Stroll down the Rue de Rivoli

This sweater from sato Yifu is one of my favorite pieces. It’s a sweater I would wear in RL with its nubby texture and draped collar. It’s so bohemian and smart at the same time. I paired it with sexy leggings from Iki Ikarus, and chunky crafty earrings from Maeve Mortlock (my heroine of the 59L earrings).

My hair’s up in a sweet pony tail from Hal*Hina (pulled from a special promotion they are currently offering that I read about in Beanie’s blog). The patchwork scarf is from the funky Sari Telling and also a piece I would wear in RL. I LOVE scarves.

Stroll down the Rue de Rivoli

And oh, JB, my dear JB. These cowboy boots are killer. Again, let me ramble on about his terrific textures and his great sculpties, the versatility, and the color changing included. (Yes, I got the full monty in the boots—the pair with all eight colors.)
