Mollena, Redux

Mollena Redux

A few weeks ago I did a blog post called “Mollena,” based on a song by James Hunter, which I had heard while I was taking the photos for the post and rather liked, so I based the whole post on the imaginary Mollena of the song and a  bad girl I grew up with. Turns out there is a RL Mollena, and she left a comment on my blog making claim to her song and asking why I was not showing Mollena with her real race. (She could be full of it but really—how many Mollenas could there be out there?)

So this is for you, darlin’… Mollena Redux.

Mollena Redux

It turns out Mollena is a voice in the BDSM community, making her life from performances and speaking engagements about BDSM and leather. While I am fully cognizant that putting a corset or leather on her might make sense, I preferred to dress Mollena up in something that she might wear when she doesn’t need to wear leather. This chic little dress from Shinichi Mathy does the trick with its modern print and silhouette and soft fur hem. I can truly imagine Mollena putting this on with zebra-print boots like these from Bax Coen and feeling perfectly right, being the cosmopolitan jetsetter she is.

Mollena Redux

I am able to do Mollena right because of the work of Anzhela Karsin. She has opened a skin store called Angel Rock Skins, stocked with skins for African-American women, and in this she has done a great favor. No more do we see the skins of unlikely women of color but the honest, beautiful look of a woman like the RL Mollena. This skin has the right complexion for an African-American woman and terrific lips. It’s amazing work!

This presented a great opportunity to wear one of Mina Nakamura’s creations for Hair Fair 2011. I love these braids so close to the head and the matching hair base. It replicates Mollena’s look to an extent—she has blonder hair. I love this striking look on some women. I paired with sexy eyes from Ikon Innovia, and here is Mollena, complete.

Hair Everywhere

Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself.  ~Hubert de Givenchy, Vogue, July 1985

Hair Everywhere!

I start with the hair today because it’s the hair that has been all over the feeds and probably will be all over Flickr. What gives this special meaning for me is that the hair is named after a friend. She, like the hair, can be unmanageable, untamed, and quite bold. But she is also beautiful, just like this hair. Vitabela Dubrovna knows Irena well enough to know how she is.

I wanted a skin that was arrestingly beautiful and Hart Larsson’s skin was ideal. With the crisply outlined lips and boldly outlined eyes, this skin can stand up to hair like this and be on equal footing without being brash or crass.

Hair Everywhere!

The dress is sleek and classy—a newer offering from Shinichi Mathy. Shinichi is known for making casual fun stuff but has lately branched out to more sophisticated evening wear and this dress is wonderfully textured and rendered. I love the simplicity of the black and white and the almost Asian pattern of dots.

What Keeps Me Up At Night

Some nights, can’t sleep, I draw up a list,
Of everything I’ve never done wrong.
To look at me now, you might insist
My list could hardly be long,
But I’ve stolen no gnomes from my neighbor’s yard,
Nor struck his dog, backing out my car.
Never ate my way up and down the Loire
On a stranger’s credit card.

~ from “A Good List” by Brad Leithauser

What Keeps Me Up At Night

Friends who know me know I like contemporary poetry—the published kind, the kind that sparks my thoughts, reminds me someone has the same feelings I do, evokes sensual memories. And reading good poetry keeps me up at night. I was absolutely delighted to receive this poem in my email via DailyLit late one night, reading from my iPad under the covers. (I strongly encourage you to click through on the link for this poem.. lines like “Or stood up and shouted, My God, that’s enough!/At a nephew’s piano recital…” make it worth it!)

I also stay up late sometimes to write my blogs or shoot my outfits. In this case, I really wanted to show you this darling dress from Shinicha Mathy. I love the colors, the aqua and green tangled together in the textures, the cleverly made sculpty halter. Shinicha makes fun cute outfits for men and women with well made textures and imaginative color ways.

What Keeps Me Up At Night

I ventured into Emerald Beta (I had grabbed a copy before they took it off the site) and played with Tuli Asterias’ Audrey line again. When I am able to wear the skin with the lipstick layer on it, I am very pleased with the skin and love the possibilities. I am not as thrilled with the base skin without the lipstick as it is usable in other viewers. Ergo, it’s not my first choice as I am generally running Snowglobe, which lacks that crucial alpha layer. I have not read all the documentation for Snowstorm but this silly little fashionista hopes they make the alpha layer standard.

What Keeps Me Up At Night

… My list, once started, continues to grow,
Which is all for the good, but just goes to show
It’s the good who do not sleep.
