Flower of the Mountain

“…I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. “

~ James Joyce, “Ulysses” (inspiration for Kate Bush)

Flower of the Mountain

What do Andalusian girls wear? Roses in their hair, at their waist, beautiful dresses. This dress from Mami Jewell would suit an Andalusian girl just fine with its bold red color and bright blowsy roses. Mami makes a sheer texture like no other in SL—there are no alpha clashes—it’s pure netting and light and airy in the flexi settings. The system pieces are rendered perfectly, as always. Mami is generously donating proceeds from this dress for Japanese relief—to help folks in her own country.

Flower of the Mountain

My skin is a new one from Diarmiud Miklos. I was struck by the beautiful rendering of the features and the gorgeous collarbone. (These things matter, people!) The hair base is not truly black hair—it’s more dark brown, so I wore a mixed color updo from DBS Heart rather than a straight black. I tucked a rose from Siyu Suen above my ear and donned extravagantly beautiful earrings from Dita Tron.

Flower of the Mountain

You can’t see my shoes in the first two shots but they are under there. (I took off the skirt to show them). A new offering from Nardya Rousselot, they are being featured at the Shoe Fair. Nardya is back in action in SL again, and thank goodness for that. Her toes are the some of the loveliest tootsies in SL and her styling is influenced by her South American life. Check out the great metallic accents on the straps that Nardya so skillfully renders. These are pretty darn hot for any girl, even an Andalusian girl ;)

Holiday Office Party

Lots of women’s and business magazines are full of sage advice about what to wear to the holiday office party. An article in Forbes tells us, “The wrong outfit… will quickly make you the subject of unwanted stares and gossip.” But what about SL? What do you wear to an office party?

Holiday Office Party

Eshi Otawara’s newest cocktail dress will do the job. It has the wow factor you need to be noticed among all the other glistening blinging beauties and has the cachet to make you look fashionistish. I mean, what is so wrong about a laced up bodice and speckly floaty flowers and thigh highs with high heel sandals from Onyx LeShelle when it’s an SL office party? (Especially when you bring cookies for the potluck!)

Holiday Office Party

A glamorous look needs a glamorous skin and Minnu Palen provides that with her new Mila skin. It’s minimalist, of course. You don’t get all the pores and skin glow that you get on other skins but for a model skin, perhaps that is all you need—something powdered and made up. My updo, adorned with a modified rose from Siyu Suen, is a dramatic style from Mirja Mills.

Owlishness

I met Owly Indigo.. hrm.. I don’t remember how I met Owly. She just kind of appeared in my SL and is a great person to know. A leader of community of fun-loving and poetry-reading people, she is always there with a joke, a funky thought, an anecdote about her Owlette, and a bird. Yes, she always has a bird on hand—whether it’s for SL7B or her blog or.. well, my blog. I asked Owly to explain her Owlishness and she accommodated me quite beautifully.

The crow wished everything was black; the owl, that every thing was white. – William Blake

Owlishness

When Harper asked for contributions to A Passion for Virtual Fashion, she asked for a focus on persona. From the very beginning, my SL persona has been my RL self, with this playfully owlish overlay. I have always thought of Owly Indigo as my RL self and as a female snowy owl. I am comfortable with the idea that this might not make a whole lot of sense. However, I do not roleplay an owl – I rarely wear an owl avatar, I do not perch on the side of a cliff or eat rodents or fight with wolves. Instead, I think of my avatar as a snowy owl in a mostly human form, and many of my avatar adornment choices come from this notion.

This “oldie” dress by Paper Couture, called Pica, makes me feel the most snowy owlish. The floatiness of the white skirt with giant black-edged feathers and the black diamonds on the white bodice mimic and evoke the coloring of a snowy owl perfectly. I certainly don’t think it was the designer’s intention to make a snowy owl dress, but DANG it sure turned out that way!

Owlishness

The choices I make for the base of my human avatar – the skin and hair – are nearly always black or white. I am so white in RL that I’m blue, and I am pale in SL, too. I think of l.fauna’s palest tone as a “natural” pale that is pretty close to white, and sometimes I wear completely white or gray skins. The “Startled White” color at fri.day is the white I definitely consider “my” color – oftentimes when changing hair, I just type “startled” into inventory to find what I want.

Hanging out with me here is the female snowy owl from Animania. See how great we look together!? Birds by Animania are ubiquitous in SL, not to mention pricey and sometimes primmy, but they really are the best in terms of variety, features, and how they look and move.

And what’s with the very non-owlish antlers? They come from Illusions, where there are many many different kinds and sizes of horns and antlers. And how, exactly, do they fit with the owl theme? Well. They don’t. I just love antlers. Wearing them makes me feel happy and complete. I think nearly everyone in SL has something they wear like that – maybe it’s a piece of jewelry, a mechanical arm, a crown, a fluffy cat’s tail, a certain hairstyle, a collar, or fangs. This is one of the things I really love about SL, the ability to create a completely unique avatar from the millions of choices out there.

So what do you wear on your av that makes you … you?

Mystique

The feminine mystique I am talking about is not what Betty Friedan wrote about, rather the mystery and inner knowledge some women seem to have.

Mystique

This dress is perfect for a woman like that. Siyu Suen’s new Corvus dress with its “raven” theme comes with a raven’s head and wings, though I opted not to purchase those (as beautiful as they are). I was all about the dress and gloves, their elegant feathers doing something less cute and whispy like many feathers shows in SL and more sharp and rigid like a raven’s wings. The win is in the system bodice with its beautiful feathers slipping up the skin. The outfit comes with two prim skirts: the regular skirt shape is very normal—nothing exciting and rather oversized on my thin avatar. The skirt with the train suits the elegance of the silhouette much more.

Mystique

I show with a beautiful skin from Tuli Asturias, one I don’t get out frequently. Tuli does “dark” better than many, understanding that it doesn’t need to be dark black against pasty white. I wear a wispy romantic updo from Serenity Stransky to soften the look and add the romance it needs.

Hippie Babe

Is your Valentine a natural girl? You know the one—she eats organic, talks about your aura, smells like patchouli and lavender, drags you to Burning Life, glows with fresh air and sunshine.

Hippy Babe

If this is your girl, then I suggest you get down to AnaLee Balut’s place and find this set, which includes these pretty undies. Flowery but not girly, this is the kind of outfit a woman wears when she wants to let her hair down. Reflecting her love of nature and her slightly batty air, this is for a girl who is earth and air and water and fire all at once.

Hippy Babe

Hanging around our hippie’s neck is a necklace for a cause dear to her heart—Abraxxa Anatine is donating all proceeds from the sale of this beautiful piece and its matching earrings to Haiti. With its native motif and turquoise stones, this jewelry set will deliver your babe to the vortex. Add a feather in her hair from marron Vita, and she’ll be ready to crawl in a tent with you and anoint you with oils (and other stuff).

Alternative Generosity

Sometimes you see someone in SL do something that just kind of blows you away with its personal effort and generosity. Today I experienced that.

Mr. Maht Wuyts stayed awake 26.2 hours and played alternative and pop music in order to collect money for Heifer International. Supported by several friends including Jasper Halfisch, IsaDaft Trollop, Arcadia Nightfire, and Cajsa Lilliehook, Maht stayed awake the whole time and played just awesome music. I showed up when he was entering hour 24. He said he had not repeated any tunes, and he was STILL playing excellent music. (I said it clearly wasn’t “the grounds at the bottom of the pot” music.)

Could this be the “alternative”? In the end, Maht collected 134,000L almost single-handedly, without a lot of extravaganza, without asking 50 people to give up their time and “play along,” without making it all about him. He simply stayed up 26.2 hours (sitting at a computer), played his extensive and amazing music collection, and spent that time encouraging, charming and cajoling the Linden out of people.

Alternative

So what does a girl wear to  the Velvet when she knows she wants to dance and cough up some money?

Alternative

I opted for this sexy-cute top camisole from Annyka Bekkers paired with tight leather leggings zipped up the backs of the legs from Anyusha Lilienthal.

Alternative

I wrapped little string things from Siyu Suen around my arms and wore some cutie hoops from Shannon Carroll.

Beneath it all was this lovely fresh skin from Fade Lei. What I really like about the skin, besides the very realistic but hand-drawn details (freckles, full pink lips, a little shadow under the eyes), are the tan lines on the skin. There is something so cute and sexy about tan lines from a bikini showing through, I think.

Alternative

I upped the ante on the whole outfit with sky-high ruby stilettos from Tesla Miles.

The best kind of generosity:

The Ghost of Eliza Doolittle

A friend challenged me the other night to dress goth with him. Now that’s a funny request since I work for the presumable Queen of Goth—Raven Pennyfeather.

However, I wanted to do something different so I donned a beautiful goth skin and then put on the Lady Beaumont frock from Teaa Demina. I wanted to be a ghost, not a vampire—a beautiful mysterious ghost from a past time.

Teaa’s dress made the look fantastic. With her incredibly shaded textures and sense of pattern and solids plus the use of prims in her ensembles, Teaa is a more premier artist than her lack of press would lead one to believe. Is she an undiscovered talent or simply overlooked? Either way, her work is fabulous.

Eliza Doolittle

I wore this spectacular hat from Siyu Suen—Eliza’s Ascot Hat-to top the outfit. With it’s combination of sculpties and flexis, it’s an ideal hat—well built, well textured, and thoughtfully made with the netted sculpty piece that goes over the hair (and not unbelievably clinging to the head at a tilt).

Eliza Doolittle

I changed my white goth skin out for Pulse’s new Victoriana skin. Its fragile translucent skin suited this look suitably. I can still be a ghost but there is no reason to be dead.

Eliza Doolittle

Finally, I finished the look with the Lady Beaumont shoes made by Teaa as well. The bows and ribbons made otherwise unspectacular shoes beautiful.
