I wish I had a river…

It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

I wish I had a river...

I am not a huge fan of on-location photos. The backgrounds kind of detract from the clothes, which is really what I am doing here. But Stephen Venkman and Cocovia Zoilin built a beautiful skating area on their sim and invited me over for skating today and I was very grateful after wrestling with gingerbread house icing. (It’s an adhesive—need I say more?)

Skating there reminded me of one of my favorite holiday songs by Joni Mitchell. I tried to dress appropriately and came up with this mashup of favorite designers. Sweater from Janie Marlowe, skirt from sachi Vixen, tights from Memai Avon, cowl from Morphine Janick (who has a sale on right now.. go go!), earmuffs from Antonia Marat and freakin excellent mittens from Nena Janus. A wind-kissed skin from Toast Bard gives me the touch of girlishness that skating requires.

I wish I had a river...

My skates are Bax Coen’s v2 set, which come in white, black, gold and silver with a new alpha layer option. She has packed them with the same resizing scripts from her boots and a skating AO that is quite nice. However, I opted to upgrade to Sala Snook’s AO, which has all sorts of fun stuff like jumps, skating moves, twirls, etc. The whole combination today made skating so pleasurable, especially in the crisp air of Stephen’s and Coco’s sim.

I wish I had a river...

I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

Go Go Kanomi!

As I said in my One Year blog, I will be inviting guest bloggers to weigh in on THEIR fashion choices. My first guest is the beautiful and much-loved Kanomi Pikajuna.

I met Kanomi at a party given by Lillie Yifu over two years ago. Kanomi peeked at me shyly from under her blonde bangs and smiled a sweet hello, taking my friendship and then honoring it by inviting me to see her dance at her favorite shemale club. She later honored me by meeting me when I was in San Francisco. She is now across the ocean, enjoying the charms of her new Nordic home.

Her style has always been distinctive, based on a mix of lolita/harajuku/shemale sensibilities. I invited her to guest post to tell us about her style (and to take advantage of having such a great writer on my blog). Read more of her charged, tongue-in-cheek writing at her now defunct blog, Tiny Dancing.

The Bride: Go-Go, right?
Go Go Yubari: Bingo. And you’re Black Mamba.
The Bride: Our reputations precede us.
Go Go Yubari: Don’t they?
~ Kill Bill, Vol. 1

Quentin Tarantino is a stellar director, with a distinctive over-the-top, comic book style that jives with our more juvenile sensibilities yet at the same time is clever, punchy, and layered with passion and complexity.

Now it would be pompous to compare a legendary Hollywood auteur to one’s own clothing, but sometimes if the metaphor fits, you have to wear it!

Go Go Kanomi!

Kanomi’s style is also a bit over the top; with her, I try to walk a fine line between trashy and classy; something that’s evolved over time from a mash-up of schoolgirls, strippers, harajuka, gothilolita, sugar pie kawaii and London-town latex.

So when on the same day Harper invited me to write this piece, I serendipitously stumbled upon Danika’s Gogo Badgirl! ensemble — a no-frills, fun get-up based on Kill Bill‘s Go-Go and which fit Kanomi to a tee. The rest, as we say in the highly profitable world of Second Life blogging, is history.

Go Go Kanomi!

Danika’s designs are on the opposite end of the fashion spectrum from those who dress their models up in light bulbs and burlap sacks; she works within the clay of the common dream: schoolgirls, cheerleaders, nurses, teacher’s pets.

Yet these same eros-tinged eidolons are buried much more deeply in the collective zeitgeist than most runway recherché.

Go Go Kanomi!

Finding these kinds of clothes done right is a happiness. To be indulged in her eye for detail and practicality is to be pampered. To be able to afford her sensible takes on genre tropes is a victory; clothes like these belong in everyone’s come-hither arsenal.

Sure, the collar details could be clearer, the color options broader, but at these prices, her work is an oasis of fun in a desert of schoolgirl schlock.

Go Go Kanomi!

The prim skirt in particular has a unique cut that lifts the whole look beyond the usual cookie-cutter “lampshade around your waist, jutting out at peculiar angles” look so prevalent in schoolgirl sets

Besides the pigsticker, this ensemble also comes with white tennies and some of those oddly thick J-school socks, but we swapped those out for some Sweet Goodbye walking boots and some Axienne nylons to take us up-market a bit.

Go Go Kanomi!

Today’s skin is a new paint job for an old shape, a bit of freckled Eurasian pastel from Tuli to help us stand out on dance floors thronged with six foot six tan-amazons “whispering” in Gorean silks.

Now let’s top off our ice cream cone with Zero Style braids, light enough to make those Caribbean blue eyes pop, and voila, it’s konichiwa, bitches!

Stalking the Deal

The deal—it can be right there before your eyes, but to get your hands on it, to finally close—that requires a certain amount of stalking and cunning.

Stalking the Deal

For a woman, it’s sometimes harder to close the deal. The pressure about how you present is so strong—too sexual and you’re a mindless bimbo, too conservative and you’re unimaginative and frumpy. This look, put together from several elements, represents a woman who has sex appeal but also knows how to “git ‘er done” and done right. She doesn’t sacrifice her sexuality or femininity for a boring suit and she doesn’t sacrifice her integrity for bad business.

Onyx LeShelle helps break out of the boring suit trap with her new jacket (part of a set of clothing and shoes just released at Maitreya). With its almost tailored silhouette, it lacks the button-uptightness of most suits with its neutral linen colors and almost mandarin color. (And blessedly, the sculpties are mod so you can line the plackets up).

Stalking the Deal

Underneath a leopard print silk top, which I made from combining Morphine Janick’s bra with violett Ellils’ top (which lacked “coverage” when worn alone). Each piece separately would be too revealing. Together they worked. Long wool shorts from Migi Voom complete the look, showing a shapely leg but also provide a tailored and professional look.

The jewelry is where our businesswoman gets her touch of style. With leopard print hoops from violett Ellils and beautifully textured wild bangles from kikunosuke Eel, she pushes into the realm of dangerous (and she’s clearly careful about the details). Who wouldn’t want to seal the deal with her?

Stalking the Deal

Finally, shoes from cocoro Lemon. With their closed toe and black heel, they are quite conservative. It’s the open back and the wild (and just gorgeous) leopard skin fur that makes them outstanding and makes our lady command attention—for all the right reasons.

These Boots

It’s a silly little thing of mine but sometimes virtual things give me a zing of pleasure. It’s like a little zap of dopamine in my nucleas accumbens, a little shot of sweetness.

These Boots

They say this little shot comes from things like eating chocolate or chilies or even sex. Well, Bax Coen’s new boots are akin to sex—or chocolate. To celebrate the grand opening of her new sim (she is finally off mainland-yay!), Bax released gold and silver boots, and like all her wonderful Prestige boots, these come with resizing scripts that can be sized for you by her gracious staff or sized by “listening” to a set of coordinates your old boots spit out.

These Boots

We have, again, Bax’s delicious zipper in back, the flipped up or down or gone cuffs, the incredibly sexy heel and now we get the sinuous shimmer of gold or silver. Each boot includes four colors you may choose from, all of them lovely and perfect for matching to different outfits. Oh, gosh, I can feel that little zing again just looking at them.

These Boots

I show the boots with a futuristic outfit from Morphine Janick, strapped and collared, netted and shined. And a lovely skin from Amesha Jewell that I got for a mere 50L. (Beautiful makeup but there is a seam on the head. I debated not showing it but it’s so darn lovely otherwise.)

The final little zing comes from Kallisti Burns’ hair. Kallisti has been making hair in SL for a while—I was her next door neighbor for a time and when she colored her hairs, I could smell the dye over on my parcel. From her hard work, she has created a store that serves a sorely underserved set of niches. She sells braids, cornrows, prim beards and mustaches. Here she has a terrific set of CORD rows. They are just too groovy AND they come in a fat pack for a mere 300L!

Calling All Angels

Morphine Janick of the Sweetest Good-bye (which is a great store name—makes me feel emo in a good way) has created a great outfit for Black Swan’s Swansong—Placebo. She has rendered a very precise system piece in her body suit with its fishnet stocking on one side and vinyl legging on the other. Her zipper work and seam matching is flawless. The wings are petite—I prefer that, actually. They are more an accessory than the feature piece as wings are usually.

Calling All Angels

This is a fantasy piece, more suited to photographs than to trips to Franks. Actually, if you wore it, you would be the talk of the room.

Calling All Angels

I styled this outfit with Viktoria Brandenberg’s Black VIK 6-Laces Knee Boots. Black, shiny, wicked, these boots come as knee high or she has another in full thigh high. With 10 colors available on the laces, I find myself wearing the boots more and more frequently, matching them to any outfit that has even a hint of black leather.

Calling All Angels

The skin is one of Pulse’s newest—Iced Grape. This “futuristic” look worked well with an anime sort of hair from Kin Keiko (it’s a bit older–not sure if it’s for sale anymore).
