Tavi, Grown Up

Tavi, Grown-Up

Last year I did an homage to Tavi Gevinson, the now 15 year old blogger from Oak Park, Illinois, who goes to high school, dresses up like many girls, and hangs out with Anna Wintour at fashion shows. I had put together this outfit, wondering what I might say about it but realizing that it might be something she would wear when she got a little older.

Tavi, Grown-Up

As a young adult (in my imagination), Tavi has contacts, an older face, and a more sophisticated style (not so much piled up) in my mind but lots of Tavi still shows through. First the dress from Sonatta Morales, a vintage beauty with horizontal stripes. Sonatta is one of SL’s premier vintage gown makers, and this stunner is typical of her quality. The bodice is exquisitely rendered from the gathered top to the satin strips along the decollatage to the buttons on the sleeves. It’s this kind of couture detail that would appeal to a young lady like Tavi.

What makes this look so Tavi is this skin from Gala Phoenix, a new release in her line called “The Visitor,” which has varying ranges of makeup, from fantastic to simply ethereal. I loved the yellowy green lips and eye makeup in this skin. However, she includes eyebrows and lip options so green lips could go to pink with one simple addition. And because she includes eyebrows, you can choose a more “alien” eyebrowless look or tattoo on one of three color options.

Tavi Tavi Tavi: An Homage

The news has flown around the internet that Tavi Gevinson is the blogger to read if you want to read about fashion. Only 14 years old, she has become the blogeuse célèbre of fashion, beating out The Sartorialist and Jak & Jil to get a spot in the New Yorker and on their website.

Everyone is curious why Tavi is so popular, but I get it. She is just a girl, in a house in Oak Park, Illinois, who likes to clip photos out of her magazines and make collages and revel in the beauty of her chosen media–fashion. She reminds us not only of our passion for fashion but our passion for something bigger than ourselves when we were young. She reminds us of that plunge into some subject so deeply that it becomes our adolescent obsession.

In homage to Tavi, I wanted to kind of cop her “look,” which is a combo of high fashion and thrift. I have to say, my look came off more thrift than haute, but this is MY homage, ‘k? First I start with my shape, which I shrunk drastically to match Tavi’s RL 4’10”. Then a dress from Canimal Zephyr, which had that sort of thrift-store prettiness and girly, not sexy, shape that Tavi favors (for reason—she’s 14).

Then I put on a bunch of accessories because Tavi does accessories. First the shawl comes attached to an obi that I have modified so it doesn’t show made by cyam Amat, revealing a sort of thriftiness. Then we have the Tavi glasses, modified to remove the little bow in the middle but I left the cute stars on the corners. The armwarmers—she may or may not wear them but they are fun enough I think she would. I layered two pairs of tights—layering is Tavi’s specialty.

I chose Gala Phoenix’s skin because it’s so youthful and as I looked at myself, I really did see Tavi and her freshness in this face, especially her bee stung lips and gentle coloring. The hair, from BlueStarRUI Villota tries to replicate her fading red dye job. Tavi does a lot of hair experimenting on a shorter bob like this one. And the flower poof from Lapipi Camel? Totally Tavi. She loves bows, barrettes and flowers.

Finally, Tavi loves shoes. She has platforms and slippers, pumps and sandals. This is where she doesn’t hold back. I chose Cerberus Noel’s newest shoes to fill the role because their funky, fashionable and youthful square toe and color changable-trim (orange to highlight the arm warmers) plus the fantastic big buckle. The bowed leg warmers from Radio Signals adds the final touch with their whimsical and warm scrunchiness. I did modify the bow to be more olive than was presented in the color change menu that came with the bows.

Poetic Youth

I have written before about the artistry of creators in SL, the overwhelming vastness of talent and vitality present and laid on various prims and shape meshes in the name of commerce or art. What has disappointed me is that artists who choose to sell their work commercially are not acknowledged as such—they are “fashionistas” or “developers” or most crudely, “skin makers.” However, some of the young artists who choose to follow the commercial path are bringing art to the masses and are some of the best the grid has.

Poetic Youth

LeeZu Baxter is one such artist. I continually see her working over and over her theme of textures and silhouettes, pulling this and that out of previous creations—a texture from a corset she once made, a twisted garter from a piece of lingerie, a colorway from a set of pants and jackets—to make something new and as confounding as the last piece (now what am I going to do with this toplessness?). This is how vision works—it doesn’t run higgledy piggledy from one theme to the next. The artist can only sing her way–her voice comes out clearly in each piece. I see this in LeeZu as I see it in Eshi Otawara’s work. I don’t think I will ever get tired of LeeZu’s pastiche or Eshi’s flowers.

Poetic Youth

Our skin artist is Korean—Sopha Portal. Her skins at My UglyDorothy challenge the status quo. This one, with orangey freckles and sweet buttoned-up thin lips, is girlish but not girly, pale and pretty with its desexualized strangely pink/orange nipples and odd short penciled eyebrows.

Lamb Bellic keeps wedging herself into my posts. The kids at Tableau have sketched out a vision for an alternative SL universe, one where fashionistas wear sometimes dowdy hair cuts to devastating effects, where glamour emerges from a gawky teenager’s ministrations with her hair rather than from the pages of Vogue, where Tavi Gevinson emerges as the voice of fashion. (Say it ain’t so!)

Poetic Youth

And then we have our friend flopsie McArdle, who has her own fascinating voice, as shown on her sim Iron Fist. On the other side of her corndog and Atari set, wedged between the BMX and the banana seat bikes, she is selling these cute practical shoes, at once festive with their colored stitching and double buckles, and awkward with their ugly duckling shape. I am a huge fan of flopsie. She evokes something so achingly familiar and humorously nostalgic in her work, from the ennui of flopping backwards on a orange vinyl ottoman to the romance of a walking through an empty subway. (Speaking of corn dogs, I have a huge version from flopsie–I mean freaking huge–on the roof of my own studio. People who notice it are always astounded and then tickled.)
