Dream Within a Dream

“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” ~ Edgar Allan Poe

Dream Within a Dream

Whenever I wear one of LeeZu Baxter’s creations, I feel like I am in some sort of fantastic dream. With their explosion of texture and colors and shapes, LeeZu’s creations push beyond standard fashion in SL and challenge the status quo of slapping textures on mesh templates. LeeZu just released a gown of epic proportions—mesh with a variety of patterns and textures—and when I say “texture,” I mean texture. You can feel the gold in the stripes, you can sense the pull of the tentacles through the air from the headpiece and hear the tulle shifting around under the voluminous skirts as you walk. What better dream than the one in pure sensual technicolor?

Dream Within a Dream

Maizon Rayna’s pretty Christmas tree drops down my back and hangs from my ears. The beautiful gold jewelry is better late than never in this blog. And once again I revisit Rocketta Haven’s newest skin, a delicate dreamlike beauty with full lips and a painterly visage. I can’t help but float in this dream within a dream.

Eva

Eva

“Eva knows I’m terra incognita and explores me unhurriedly, like you did. Because she’s lean as a boy. Because her scent is almonds, meadow grass. Because if I smile at her ambition to be an Egyptologist, she kicks my shin under the table. Because she makes me think about something other than myself. Because even when serious she shines. Because she prefers travelogues to Sir Walter Scott, prefers Billy Mayerl to Mozart, and couldn’t tell a C major from a sergeant major. Because I, only I, see her smile a fraction before it reaches her face…. Because her laughter spurts through a blowhole in the top of her head and sprays all over the morning. Because a man like me has no business with this substance “beauty,” yet here she is, in these soundproof chambers of my heart.” ~ David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

Eva

I am reading Cloud Atlas, and oh, what a great book! This quote is only a smidgen of the gorgeousness of David Mitchell’s writing, which changes in voice among his characters. (Oh, Robert Frobisher, you wily sexy penniless bon vivant bisexual composer.. what a delicious wit you have!)

My Eva is a credit to the romantic love the narrator feels for her. Start with this charming mesh dress from LeeZu Baxter. With its flowered blouse and Victorian style sleeves, lace pencil skirt and satin hem, this gorgeous piece is an homage to the 70s in its complex textures and silhouette. LeeZu has added a subtle shimmer to the fabric, a satiny gloss that shows well in the new materials viewing in SL. BabyChampagne Sass’ high-heeled, high-fashion shoes

I paired Maizon Rayna’s gorgeous jewelry with the outfit. A real life fashion designer, Maizon has always dreamed of being a jewelry maker and in SL she can do it. This gorgeous onyx pearl set with its accompanying flower-shaped jeweled ring includes earrings and a bracelet, which I do not show.

Eva

Aida Ewing’s gorgeous Vera skin gives our Eva a perfect look with darkly lined eyes and a pale pink lipstick and blush. Queue Marlowe’s latest, a side swept ‘do, gives the whole look a beautifully blonde tumble of curls. And Reira Islay’s eyes, sold at the Halloween Mini Mart, are intensely lovely.

Fresh Made Lemonade

Fresh Made Lemonade

You’re like fresh made lemonade
Just like fresh made lemonade
So sweet to the taste

~ “Fresh Made Lemonade” by Barnaby

Fresh Made Lemonade

It’s still hot here and a tall cool glass of fresh made lemonade is the ticket. This fresh look is invigorating too. Start with this lovely dress from Carmella Ruby. Carmella, who is known for her distinctive skins and shapes, providing the grid with a much-needed alternative to all the pretties out there, is now branching out into mesh clothing. She asked me to preview this dress and I was so delighted with the textures and silhouette, I decided to blog it. Carmella will be offering this dress and other gorgeous items with hand-made textures at very competitive prices (I heard her suggest under 100L for most items) so that folks who are unable to get their hands on quality mesh items regularly can do so.

Fresh Made Lemonade

My skin is one of Tricky Boucher’s 15 gorgeous offerings for the Arcade this time around, and it’s, as usual, stunning. With a variety of makeups and skin tones, Tricky is presenting these skins in the affordable gacha environment of the Arcade. (Whether you can get in is another question.) Just jam your linden into the machine and grab whatever you can get—they are all lovely.

My short ‘do from Chiaki Xue, another one of her stunning wavy short cuts, shows off the earrings and necklace that Maizon Rayna so generously offered as her Love Donna Flora contribution. The exquisite and intricate build of the jewelry is very representative of Maizon’s work with its gorgeous shapes and baroque sensibilities.

Making love til we see the sun again.

Possibly Maybe

10 05 2011

Your flirt finds me out
Teases the crack in me
Smittens me with hope

Possibly maybe possibly maybe
possibly maybe

~ “Possibly Maybe” by Bjork

Possibly Maybe

I am a sucker for Bjork—I admit it. This song reminds me of the first moments you meet someone you really like. It doesn’t even have to be romantic love; it could be the promise of a wonderful lifelong friendship. Maybe this new person will change your life.

Well if someone new meets me, I want to look good, and this beautiful dress from maizon Rayna is certainly the ticket. Maizon is a RL fashion designer from Italy—she knows what goes into making a piece and knows the elements of style from very personal experience. It’s abundantly clear in her use of laces and prints—something a lot of designers can’t or won’t do. Once you get to print, you have to worry about propotions, seams, etc, and maizon executes perfectly. From the lace bolero with cap sleeves to the ruffled bow at the waist, maizon hits on every detail with perfect pitch.

Possibly Maybe

The Skin and Shape Expo is on now (yes another one, but these skin and shape makers want to show you stuff!). This skin is a new offering from Inka Mexicola at the Expo. It has an intense boldness that works well with this dress. Inka realizes a bold eye needs a subtler lipstick, and this pink is ideal. The features are fine but not generic and the skin tone is lovely. Ryker Beck offers this gorgeous necklace and earring set as a ridiculously generous gift at her booth at the Skin and Shape Expo.

Possibly Maybe

Electric shocks?
I love them!
With you –> dozen a day
But after a while I wonder
Where’s that love you promised me?
Where is it?

Possibly maybe probably love, possibly
Possibly maybe probably love, possibly

Batting 500

16 12 2010

Today marks my 500th post (according to WordPress). This could be the point where I say, “Sorry guys. I am done.” Or could be the time when I radically change the blog. I will be doing neither, since this sort of snuck up on me and frankly, I don’t have the wherewithal to make any big changes. Things seem to be steaming along of their own momentum.

I will give you some statistics: If you have read my blog since day one, your brain has been exposed to 1700+ photos. You have seen approximately 2,700 slurls. As of this writing, there have been 999 comments. (Ha!) You have read approximately 200,000 words (based on a sampling of my blogs, I guessed about 400 words per average). (Uh, hello, according to sources I have checked, a novel is at least 50,000 words. I have written four novels, albeit kind of mediocre ones. A PhD thesis is about 100,000 words. I have written two but still have not gotten a grant.. ha!)

Batting 500

In celebration, I dressed up. This dress from maizon Rayna is a perfect choice because it has so many things I love—fashion combined with design combined with artistry. Start with the bodice: the texture of the material, probably a crepe de chine, runs over the very simple bodice and into the full skirt. She uses it in the gloves and then runs it into the fabric roses adorning the bodice and the gloves and around the waist. I can HEAR the material moving when I wear this dress because it is so evocatively rendered. Look closely at the back and you can SEE the hook and eye on the top and the zipper on the bodice. The prims are perfectly made and proportioned–the system pieces are clean. Just beautiful. Why does maizon know how to work these fine details in? She does fashion design in real life in Italy.

Batting 500

My perfect makeup is from Nena Janus. Her skin seems to fit many shapes—I have tested to check—and that’s really important. We don’t want to all look alike—I certainly don’t. Her lips are not so overdone or done in a frowny fashion so that my slight smile doesn’t show; her eyes are beautifully made up and not garish; her eyebrows are well shaped and realistic. My earrings are from Shea Paule, inspired by a set he did for a friend. These drops are classic and rich without being ostentatious. He JUST put them on Marketplace, transfer. They are a perfect gift for your loved one.

Batting 500

Each day is the first day of the rest of your blog. Onwards I sally forth to write another 500 *sigh*

Gypsy

15 05 2010

I am a little wary of using the headline I have used. Of course we romanticize the Travelers, imagining them all to be romantic wanderers or else sly grifters moving from place to place. I use the word loosely, imagining more the spirit of the lower case gypsy, not the Romany people.

Gypsy

I am guessing maizon Rayna had some sort of imagined romantic woman in mind when she made this ensemble. A beautiful dress with a cream colored motif and lace on a black background, this outfit is clearly for the woman who is a bit bohemian, a bit dramatic. I especially like the removable corset (I show the outfit with the corset worn). Maizon cleverly made the corset of the jacket and skirt prims so the shape cinches in the center perfectly. The textures line up perfectly.

Gypsy

Then maizon tops off the entire ensemble with a separately sold jewelry set. With two different bracelets, necklace, hair piece, earrings, anklets and a ring, this set is a gorgeous accompaniment to the dress, taking it from girl to queen.

I wear new hair from Queue Marlowe, again in one of her great wavy textures. Queue has revolutionized curly/wavy hair in SL (thank you!). Now she uses shoulder pieces separately attached to make it look as if the locks flow over the front. I have removed them for the close up so you can see maizon’s beautiful jewelry and Tricky Boucher’s gorgeous skin, which makes me feel a bit Monica Bellucci (bless your heart, Tricky).

Society Lady

16 11 2009

I have a friend in SL who is quite the society man. He told me quite plainly, “Pretty. I like women in hats,” when he saw me in this ensemble. He likes ladies with elegance and intelligence and means, so from him, this is high praise.

Society Lady

The ensemble I am wearing, from maizon Rayna, certainly begs one to think a woman of better means would be wearing it. It’s not only the hat, which is splendid and simple all at once, but also the slim line of the dress, the classic tailoring of the skirt and neckline, and the pure elegance of the whole look.

Society Lady

Nowadays, society ladies are not dowagers—many are young women of means, building on years of social connections through their families’ legacies. We don’t have a big need for that in SL—women in SL work and shop and marry and lead companies and organize events and educate and innovate. Not a lot have a need to carry on the blood line or plan for how to spend their inheritance.

Society Lady

Nevertheless, this is a place of dreams and fantasies, so pretending I am a young wealthy woman is not impossible. I chose Monicuzza Babenco’s beautiful skin to feature in this fantasy. It was a natural with its beautifully rendered eyebrows and aristocratic features. And Tesla Miles’ very high but very classy heels provided the final punctuation to this statement of class.

Celebrate the Festival of Lights

18 10 2009

This weekend was significant for many in the world—it was Diwali, the festival of lights. While the original story given to the holiday varies among people–some say Rama came home after a long journey, some say Mahavira reached nirvana, and some say the sixth Guru was released and came home from imprisonment–Diwali is ultimately a time of great joy and celebration among many people in the Eastern hemisphere, and now the Western.

Diwali ultimately is about the victory of inner goodness over evil and lights are lit as a metaphor for the inner light. Seeing rows of candles lit up at a celebration, you realize how each inner light from a person comes to a beautiful overall glow. It’s a powerful metaphor wherein knowledge overcomes ignorance, beauty overcomes ugliness, and love overcomes hate.

Happy Diwali!

So it’s in keeping with the beauty of this holiday that I wear this sumptuous creation from maizon Rayna. A real life fashion designer, maizon brings her Italian fashion sensibilities to her work in SL. She explained to me that her men’s collection in SL replicates her RL collection.

I spotted this sari in her store and bought it after seeing her wear it. The prims are perfectly placed, from the hair piece on top to the jewels around the hips to the ankle bracelets. With its textures, both photosourced and photoshopped, the top and skirts are perfectly done, not a pixel out of place.

Happy Diwali!

To match the outfit, I chose to wear Nany Merlin’s skin and this gorgeous hair from Queue Marlowe.

Happy Diwali!

Happy Diwali. May your light shine!
