The Out-of-Towner

When you read this I will be long gone, out of town, enjoying the pleasures of a full-amenity resort, while you, dear reader will be stuck at home in your jammies, reading my blog. (Actually, ok… it’s a water park we’re going to, and I don’t swim. Don’t envy me TOO much.)

the Out-of Towner

So while they swim, I will be out and about shopping. I realize this is not resort wear per se, but I am one of those uptight city ladies, ‘k? I don’t *do* flip flops. This jacket from toraji Voom is perfect for a weekend “in the country,” as I prefer to think of it. Woolen and warm, tailored and worn, this jacket travels well from city to country and back. I wear a swingy skirt from como Setsuko, flirty and autumnal and fun. Warm tights from Visa Volare keep my legs warm as the season turns to the cold.

This ever-versatile scarf from hiwinyu Fazuku keeps my neck warm. (Now, when I went to Paris, I wondered about scarves around the neck—were they fashion or function? I found out that one scarf around the neck can keep a person very warm without having to put in a heavy coat.) Yes, I realize my purse from Irie Campese is huge. I have my knitting in there, thank you, my iPad, kleenex, money, credit cards, sunglasses, a bottle of water, a granola bar, brochures, a map, umbrella, gum.. and a bundle of receipts ;)

the Out-of Towner

My skin is beautifully provided by Joakim Asbrink, who fashions her skins after international stars with a few change-ups. This one, named after the elegant First Lady of France, has beautiful autumnal coloring. The eyebrows are well shaped, the eye makeup is artistically done. My earrings are from Abraxxa Anatine’s skillful hands, certainly a pair that might be found in a high-end art jewelry shop on my travels. And I keep my new hair from Truth Hawks in place with his ingenious color-change hair band.

Jacket Weather

The chill has hit the air but not in an unwelcome way. I remember when fall started and I was SO excited to bring out my new fall school clothes—the new cute sweater, the fashionable jacket, shiny shoes.

Jacket Weather

I just got this new sweater from Shelly Toonie, who is releasing this whole set with a great set of colorways and combos as if they are knit from variegated yarn (yes still stuck on this knitting thing). The skirt is a wonderfully textured sculpty from Maya Levane, who has combined the best of of a pleated look into a skirt that moves pretty well on the avatar considering it’s a sculpty. My jacket is from last spring but does well in the fall as well as the chill comes in the air. Toraji Voom has made a very versatile piece. A little scarf around my neck to keep the chill out thanks to Milla Michinaga, and I am set to go.

Jacket Weather

What turns this outfit on its head are the striped tights from Allegory Malaprop and the coordinating flats from Fallingwater Cellardoor. Fallingwater, as long as she has been in this game, still makes wonderful content and pays attention to all the smallest details. These little shoes are lovely. Thanks to Zeerya Pyrithea for the earrings.

Finally my skin, glowing and young with bee stung lips, comes from the mind and talented digital make-up artistry of Gala Phoenix. And though the hair is named “Lost” by Lamb Bellic, I will find my way home.

Perfect Autumn Day

It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. ~ P.D. James

Perfect Autumn Day

I remember a perfect autumn day when I was in high school and the leaves were falling to the ground and we were doing marching band practice and Tom Garvens was ahead of me with his saxophone, marching through the leaves in the perfect golden light of an autumn afternoon and the air was dry with a hint of the menace of winter and the rhythmic crunch crunch of the marchers was mesmerizing.

Or another day when I was in grad school when I was taking the bus from one campus to another at Duke and the wind blew up and took the leaves in big swirls like some movie, blowing them as a frame around the scene of the chapel as we departed.

Did you know my blog was supposed to be an exercise in writing? Let me write about the outfit, which is something I definitely would have worn on that day at Duke. First the jacket from Rob Moonites, a definite win as it has menswear styling but it’s sized for women. I love the tweed texture, how he has done the inside with a checkerboard plaid, how he has shaped the lapels. I wore a suit like this (thrifted from Goodwill) all autumn with everything.

Perfect Autumn Day

A scarf was frequent as well. This one is from Pixel Chrome. And I wore a t-shirt underneath until it got colder, and then it was a sweater. This one from toraji Voom is ideal. Jeans were always old and scuffed—poor grad student, dontcha know. Dick Wiesel provides these artistically grungy jeans (almost like someone had doodled on them during a particularly long lecture about postmodern theory–heh). The funky fringy boots from Kao Sands are de rigueur for the smart grad student–flat heels for walking all over campus, fringes for that bit of Bohemian flavor that is so important.

This fresh skin from Julliette Westerburg has a little autumn briskness to it in the pretty blush on the cheeks. Autumn Hykova (perfect name) provides this lovely wavy hair with a color change knit cap topping it. All I am missing is my book bag (which usually got left in my office in the basement when I was just out strolling for a breath of fresh air between classes—it was too damn heavy).

Perfect Autumn Day

Art Deco Elegance

In the past week, I have made a few new friends, which is the whole purpose of SL, isn’t it? I mean, besides dressing up, making my perfect home, shopping like mad, making friends is what it’s all about. Shilow sent me over to one of *her* favorite dressmakers and I came home with bags full.

Art Deco

This beautiful dress by Loreney Klees caught my eye instantly. With the beautiful hand-drawn gold bodice, embroidered with gold buttons and stitches, the dress flows down into a translucent assymetrical skirt with lushly textured prims. It’s simple and elegant—just my style.

Art Deco

I styled the dress with one of my favorite new hair pieces, a full bob from toraji Voom. With its flowy subtle messiness, it goes one step past the straight to-the-head bob that girls wear when they have thin fine hair to a bob for a woman with full lush locks. Imagine running your fingers through this soft hair.

I accompanied the dress with jewelry from Zaara Kohime. She has cornered the SL fashion world with her beautiful exotic Indian textures in her clothing. Don’t forget her jewelry, though. She proves she has the chops to texture AND build with these gorgeous pieces.

Art Deco

And finally these delicious toes from Onyx LeShelle. Maitreya did not jump into the toe shoe market until they had refined their tootsies to perfection, and that was a wise move. You know you are wearing a beautiful shoe when all you want to do is stare at your OWN toes. (OMG, I LOVE my toes! I stumble around because all I am doing is looking at my own feet!) And at a price reasonable relative to others’ toe shoes, I can’t imagine why you would want to get anyone else’s sandals.

Sweater Weather

I was poking around the other day, looking for a bunny head I had seen on someone  (don’t ask) and ended up back at yumyum. I love yumyum. Everything there is so cute without being twee, pretty and sweet without being cloying. I just can’t handle twee, so that’s saying a lot. Even the bunny head appeals to me.

A Chill in the Air

I stumbled in past the many plants in pots and glass containers of which I have too many, past the sculpty antique chairs, past the wreaths (two of which I bought), past the herbs in gardening boxes, and found myself in front of the most fantastic sweaters. So of course, I got one. Between the amazing texture, the perfectly done sculpties, the pure coziness of it, I am just thrilled. And this is again, a perfect example of how toraji Voom makes cute without crossing to twee.

A Chill in the Air

I found a pair of jeans from Dawn Memorial that matched the sweater well and were chic enough to go with the sweater. And then the other to-die-for in this ensemble are the boots from JB Gazov. I have already explained my love of all things J’s, and these boots reinforce those feelings. These are the ankle boots for a knee-high boot—I got the multicolor version. They also come with two heels.. a stiletto and a more square version. OK, yes, I love these boots.

A Chill in the Air

Finally, I dressed up with a brand new loose updo from Truth Hawks, a beautiful skin from Lorac Farella—one of my favorites, and jewelry from Maeve Mortlock and Nuala Shippe. I feel chic and warm and just right.

A Chill in the Air
