Mouse in the House

“When the mouse laughs at the cat there is a hole nearby.” ~ Nigerian Proverb

Mouse in the House

I know I dissed elf ears the other day and now I am wearing mouse ears, but honestly? They are cute. This was all about building a look around these ears from Jenova Saeed and hair from Chiaki Xue. It seems Chiaki is taking a fun approach to creation and teaming up with several different Japanese designers to make different looks. I love the results. The ears twitch and have orbiting spirals around them (which are not easily seen in this photo—it’s subtle) and they come in several colors.

Mouse in the House

I just recently got this skirt, part of a dress set from dirty Adored’s new Themeory offering, and the skirt was so ideal for this look, especially over these stockings from Nena Janus that were a rez day present. I found this top from Vasha Martinek and colored it a bright red to match and donned a great rockabilly tattoo from Antonia Marat. My shoes were a Marketplace find from Ann Otoole because they had that exaggerated style I wanted. I had to hack them to get the invisiprims hidden—Firestorm makes a mess of those. Give us V2 options, designers!

My skin was a recently rez day purchase from Belleza. I love the red lips Tricky Boucher made. Finally, new black eyes from Ikon Innovia. You all wanted different colors but *I* wanted my black eyes. It makes my mouse girl perfect.

Inspired by a Violet….

A friend of mine, Mr. Oh, recently IM’d me to tell me about a new blog he had come upon. He is a wonderful blogger for Second Man—articulate, critical and illustrative. He raises the bar for other bloggers every time. So a recommendation from him needs to be heeded. And he was right. Digital Butch is a terrific blog by Saaskje Violet, a “boi” who likes to show her butch looks and explain where to find fashions she likes. What I so like about it is that Saaskje definitely has an editorial viewpoint, a unique voice, and a great fashion sense. Inspired by Saaskje, I put together this look.

Inspired by a Violet...

First the jacket, a punk marvel from Amerie Spitteler, who has her own unique voice. Kinda punk, kinda Tokyo street girl, it’s hard where it needs to be and sweet where it needs to be. I especially like how she got the system piece to convincingly show belts across the torso and combine it with the prim belt. It’s all of a piece and makes sense. I wear a little bra from Mariska Simons underneath—our girl is pretty underneath all that armor, you know. And leggings are from AvaGardner Kungler. Didn’t think she could do punk, didya?

I love these boots from Vasha Martinek, which I have been holding on to for a while. Vasha offers a plethora of fantasy and funky boots at DV8 and her designs are getting less chunky and more refined. My only complaint? This set did not have RED boots!

Inspired by a Violet...

I know a couple days ago I pointed out that Gala Phoenix’s skins were “young” skins—too baby-faced, too dewy. For this look they are perfect because the sweetness of the skins softens this look substantially. I don’t expect a punky girl to be all sophisticated. I expect her face to show vulnerability, and this skin makes it work.

My glorious hair is from Emilie Carter, who provides the grid with shaved, wild hair that is beautiful at the same time. In addition, she makes hair bases that are shaved to match her wild hair.

Wicked Fishing

Another in a seeming series of black and wicked outfits. I am beginning to wonder if this is some sort of unconscious response to all the pretty mermaid outfits I did last week.

Wicked

This outfit, once featured as the outfit in the fishing pond at DV8 (I kid you not), is my choice of sin today. With its sweetheart neckline, sexy off-shoulder sweater and shorty short flirty flexi skirt, this is an outfit made for sin.. but only in the sweetest way. Let me remark here that Vasha Martinek has further expanded on this outfit by making several colors of the tank that goes with this. She has this entire outfit (29 pieces which include a number of tops, jeans, this skirt, and the boots) and several colors of the boots on sale as well.

Wicked

I show it with a skin from Syndel Daviau, who showed at the Fantasy Faire. (Yes, I thought I was done too, but clearly not, because Syndel deserved her day.) Worn on my usual shape, the nose on this shape shows itself a bit differently, so my facial structure seems very changed. I really like the eyebrows (and remember, I am an eyebrow freak), and the coloring of the eye shadows is hauntingly beautiful. Syndel also chooses a decolletage with what might be called “enhanced” breasts. Many women in SL like this look; it’s not my usual but it suits this outfit perfectly.

Wicked

Finally the boots, also made by Vasha Martinek and also once part of the fishing expedition at DV8. (When have you ever gone fishing and HOPED you would get the boot?) She is serving up 13 (!) additional colors of these boots and yes, they can be purchased separately.

Alternative Prom

I read a story about a girl who made her prom dress from gum wrappers. I am not entirely surprised. There are kids making prom dresses from duct tape and wearing vintage. Not everyone is a debutante.

Alternative Prom

What does the girl who wants to be punk and pretty all at the same time do? Well in SL, she can put on a wild hair and a pretty dress and she’s set. In this case, the dress is from terian Demina and includes lovely sculpty tulips at the waist and in the hair and a sculpted skirt made of several pieces attached to pelvis, legs, and spine so when you move it’s not all one big solid piece swaying around. It’s pretty and almost vintage. There is an unfortunate disjuncture between the system piece and the skirt. However this gown has plenty of other charming details.

Alternative Prom

The better part of the ensemble is topping it with Vasha Martinek’s funky and fabulous hair. With locks textured not only with regular hair textures but also a sort of netted glowing material, this hair pushes our prom girl into very alternative territory, despite her fresh skin from Tricky Boucher and a lovely lily wrist corsage from SAZAE Yoshikawa.

Mysterious for RFL

Have you ever seen that raven-haired woman, the one with the sly smile on her face and the legs up to there, wearing sexy boots with stiletto heels and looking mysterious and interesting?

Darksexy for RFL

Me too. Never met her. Never had the guts to talk to her. She was kind of intimidating. That doesn’t mean I can’t try dressing up like her for this post, and wearing Solange Cerveau’s offering to benefit RFL might be the ticket to unlocking her secrets. With Solange’s incredible system skills and sexy aesthetic, this dress comes off sexy and elegant all at once. Solange has always gotten “it”—having a short skirt is not all that’s needed. She has full sleeves ending in lace cuffs, a sexily wrapped torso and then she shows skin with a criss-cross back, plunging neckline and a skirt up as far as it can go before it just becomes crass. Solange, like Delora, was obligated to make her ads PG especially for the Fair; check out her great ads at the Fair.

Darksexy for RFL

Tuli Asturias’ Eve skin seems pretty innocuous and sweet for the most part until you wear it with these red lips and the sparkly eyeshadow (how does she do that). Pair it with this wicked hair from Lamb Bellic and suddenly you have a beautiful alternative girl, a suicidegirl with a great collar made by Vasha Martinek. (By the way, I have a frowny face Harper shape—one that looks like a fashion model. I tried her face shape with this look, and it was all wrong. I went back to slightly smiling Harper. She is much sexier, I think. Who wouldn’t want to know what’s making her smile?)

Darksexy for RFL

I am showing the gothic boots from Oct Oakleaf’s new offerings, this time with the handy uh.. cuffs removed. (Get the scoop on the cuffs here.) Oct has made some very darksexy boots here with the filigree embossed in red on a supple black leather. Check the beautiful folds around the ankle—now that’s a sculpty.

Rollergirl

When things get a little hectic (and they have been a wee bit lately), I do “downtime” in SL by doing something goofy. In this case, I threw on a pair of roller skates and toured my sims.

Rollergirl

I got this dandy little outfit from the 10L sale on the Car Wash sim. Normally 250L (I checked the Onyxia Constantine’s store, where she has several other cute cute things), this little get up, perfect for rollerblading around a sim while engaging in detente in IM, comes complete with the funky gloves and stockings (including prim roll), bikini top and wonderfully outrageous skirt. Rush down to Car Wash because the sale ends March 9 and there are some really great things! (And the sim is terrific.)

Rollergirl

The hair is a sweet little number by Toast Bard. You know, Toast comes off all ironic and obliquely funny but honestly, hair and clothing there is sweet and nostalgic. I love the wisps of hair falling in the face, the innocent daisies, the hair perfectly tucked behind the ear.

This skin by Gala Phoenix is the obvious choice. It’s youthful, glowing, fresh (and sexy with this little bikini top).

Rollergirl

Finally, the skates. These funky roller skates (complete with skulls) come from Vasha Martinek (head of the Twisted Hunt, which is now going on). I wandered over to her shop, and I was blown away. If you want roller skates with skulls on them and funky bands and a kick ass vinyl texture over a platform heel, she has them in like 90 variations. You want acid green with black? She has it. You want black with orange accents. Got it. You need bright yellow? She’s ready for you. Additionally, she has some great gothic shoes, boots, hair—all of it fantastic and funky. I am definitely going back.

Let me give a shout out to my skating AO. The skates come with an AO override so you look like you are skating when you walk. However, if you want deluxe skating complete with stands that cause you to circle around and do all sorts of tricks, go to Sine Wave and get the rollerblading AO. I can skate circles around everyone else and frankly enjoy watching myself swirling around to the music as I work in other windows.

The Living Tableau

Today’s blog is not about an outfit but about an idea about showing fashion in SL. On Saturday, RFyre staged a fashion show of different style, one that didn’t rely on models walking down a catwalk but relied on models being interactive characters in what we called a “living tableau.” We wanted to show Raven Pennyfeather’s fashions to their best advantage, and as a team, we were able to execute a very successful show.

RFyre Tableau Show

Photo and Invitation by SC Tracy

Our living tableau was based on a story I cooked up about a vampire named Aleksandr and his family, gathered from around the globe from many time periods for a serious meeting of the minds and fangs. The premise is they were gathered and our visitors were invited to have an audience with Aleksandr with the Family looking on. It was based on my devouring the Twilight book series and watching too much True Blood.

Viscount Menatep built the set based on a photo he had found, with feedback from SC Tracy and me. Viscount built most of it in two nights with tweaks later. Let met tell you, Viscount is not just a gorgeous, sexy model; he is one heck of a builder. (You can see more of his work at Avant Garde. He IS for hire.)

RFyre Tableau Show

The tableau sans models, built by Viscount Menatep.

SC Tracy did the portraits based on my idea about having portraits arrayed around the room as sales panels. He assembled the portraits in Photoshop after he had photographed each one of the models. He and his partner, fairie palen, framed the pieces after fairie made the beautiful frames in Maya. He was meticulous about each portrait, matching it to the character description I had written for each character with Lum Lumley’s help (which you may have seen on the feeds—we sent them out for several days in preparation for the show). SC is a RL graphic artist who works in fashion, so his input was invaluable. He definitely contributed to the whole vision as he does to many things for RFyre now.

The concept of a “static show” started with Shenlei Flesheart, who has been doing such shows at the Fashion Research Institute in which I have modeled. She has staged shows with static models for a time now. In fact, even her runway shows include a poseball one rides down the runway so the model doesn’t have to worry about lag. Shen’s perspective, and she’s right, is that allowing people to come and go to view the items rather than having to sit through an entire show, is much more convenient. I agree.

RFyre Tableau Show

We decided to up the ante by having the show be interactive. RFyre has a huge following in the RP community, so it would stand to reason that a lot of our customers would like to come “play.” Our models, as well, enjoyed playing quite a bit. We flung bon mots back and forth. And we engaged our visitors. They came and had a full interactive experience—not just sitting and complaining in IM about the clothes and the model falling off the runway and the lag. (Well perhaps they did IM about the clothes and the lag, though I saw little lag, but I think we kept them pretty busy.)

RFyre Tableau Show

Photo by SC Tracy. Dex Minotaur as Theo.

Because we did this ourselves, we did not have to rely on a modeling agency to assemble experienced models for this show because we didn’t have to put the models through the rigors of fighting lag (which is really, very important for catwalk models—the best are very experienced in this). We were able to start on time because even if one model was missing, the whole show wasn’t held up (and in fact, when our models crashed, they simply logged back in and took their stand again). We also didn’t have to rely on an agency to find a sim, assemble a catwalk, write scripts, etc. Our models were styled as we and they pleased.

Additionally for the show, instead of fiddling around with poses and AOs, the models simply posed on pose stands that were loaded with several static poses, and they each had a HUD they could use to control the stands, switching from pose to pose as they pleased. I loaded the stands with poses I owned—they had to bring nothing.

RFyre Tableau Show

This all took considerable organizing and discussion, of course. Raven assured we had a working timetable in a spreadsheet we shared among each other and kept us all to task, checking in with us frequently. Izabellea Catteneo, our assistant at RFyre, released notices to many RP groups and kept tabs on the sim.

RFyre Tableau Show

We were privileged to have some pretty gorgeous folks there—Viscount Menatep, one of the sexiest male models in SL; Dex Minotaur, my favorite cowboy and a great model himself; SC Tracy, Director of Advertising for RFyre and hunk; the ever helpful Ruin Quan and his mate, raethe Rhiadra; Valeries Muircastle, my beautiful friend from Germany; Sky Everett, who needs no introduction; the deadly sexy Nigel Riel, who carried the RP portion of the show; Sabein Streeter, fashionista extraordinaire; Vasha Martinek, the ingenious organizer of the Twisted Hunt and a great DJ; magz Maddox, one of our treasured Luminaries; Breezy Carver, owner of Piermont Landing at New Babbage; Avrele Guisse, designer for the Avrele line; and oh yeah, Raven and me.

The tableau is still up for a few days. You can go to Isle RFyre and duck in the door next to the tp entrance point. And the portraits are still set for selling the outfits ;)
