Yankee Doodle Dandy

The pin-up girl—idealized femininity for the wall—became a source of morale for men fighting overseas during WWII. (Not sure what the women fighting overseas got. I know they were there–my great-aunt was a WAC.)

Yankee Doodle Dandy

This sailor girl would probably do well on someone’s wall. Moxie Polano made this swimsuit with sailor hat in honor of vintage fashioniasta Reghan Straaf to celebrate the pin-up. With its cleverly crafted wrinkles (especially puckering around the thighs), it’s more than just a swimsuit—it’s a piece of art. Moxie combines her great skills with system pieces with some great sculpties.

Yankee Doodle Dandy

I love this skin from Rack Brautigan. I am not a freckle girl, but these freckles are so perfect—they fall so naturally on the skin and the shading is perfect on the collarbone. Rack has opened a new store next to MichiMi and shows a wide variety of skins that may appeal to ladies who are looking for a new look.

Funny How Time Slips Away

Well hello there
My, it’s been a long long time
How am I doin’
Oh well, I guess I’m doin’ fine
It’s been so long now and it seems that
It was only yesterday
Ain’t it funny how time slips away

~ Willie Nelson, “Funny How Time Slips Away”

Funny How Time Slips Away

Today’s post was inspired by an old recording of a Willie Nelson song, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” the one recorded in 1962 with the ladies crooning in the background. He also wrote “Crazy,” very famously performed by Patsy Cline. Hence today’s look, which is built on the foundation of a great skin by Keiko Morigi, poignant in its illustrative character (so unlike the many airbrushed looks we see around the grid). I top it with a great vintage ‘do from Bubbles Clawtooth, one of many vintage pieces he offers.

Funny How Time Slips Away

The shirt’s from Floatie Hock, who has a good thing going with her vintage wear (and great sims). This can be worn by a man or a woman (as most of her items, they look great on either sex). I wanted to find a big full skirt, ala Patsy Cline at the Grand Ol’ Opry, but nothing was turning up, so I ran over to Antonia Marat’s and found these cute rockabilly-style highwaist pants. Finally, the cowboy boots are from Cerberus Noel and appropriately decorated. No cowgirl would be seen dead on a horse on these but in front of an audience of music lovers, yes indeed!

Mystique

The feminine mystique I am talking about is not what Betty Friedan wrote about, rather the mystery and inner knowledge some women seem to have.

Mystique

This dress is perfect for a woman like that. Siyu Suen’s new Corvus dress with its “raven” theme comes with a raven’s head and wings, though I opted not to purchase those (as beautiful as they are). I was all about the dress and gloves, their elegant feathers doing something less cute and whispy like many feathers shows in SL and more sharp and rigid like a raven’s wings. The win is in the system bodice with its beautiful feathers slipping up the skin. The outfit comes with two prim skirts: the regular skirt shape is very normal—nothing exciting and rather oversized on my thin avatar. The skirt with the train suits the elegance of the silhouette much more.

Mystique

I show with a beautiful skin from Tuli Asturias, one I don’t get out frequently. Tuli does “dark” better than many, understanding that it doesn’t need to be dark black against pasty white. I wear a wispy romantic updo from Serenity Stransky to soften the look and add the romance it needs.

For Daisyblue

I logged in tonight to find out that a dear woman who was a vital part of fashion in SL in its earlier days passed away this week. I was so saddened to hear of this. Daisyblue Hefferman was my first contact to the world of fashion blogging. She was one of the fashion bloggers for the now defunct Linden Lifestyles, and she gave a weekly report on fashion happenings in SL. (This was before there were 1000s of bloggers–Linden Lifestyles was the go-to along with Second Style. Her content has, sadly, been removed from the site.) She came to SL as a librarian and contributed much to SL in that capacity, making her friends smile and enjoying SL in many capacities: as builder, fashionista, machinamist, educator, and always, librarian.

This outfit is dedicated to Daisyblue, who loved daisies, blue and Victorian. She also loved the work of Random Calliope and once recounted to me a memory of dancing with him among his flowers, which enchanted her, so I have taken photos at his once-sim, Ode, still beautifully kept by Elizabeth Tinsley.

For Daisyblue

I am showing a lovely Victorian dress from Teaa Demina with ample embellishment and beauty, suitable for a lady of Daisyblue’s magnificence.

For Daisyblue

I show with the new skin from Tuli Asturias. Its lovely bloom speaks to Daisyblue’s essence—truly a flower, a joy to her many friends in SL.

For Daisyblue

My condolences to her many friends, especially Krull Quar.

Beautiful Red Dress

“I’ve got a beautiful red dress
And you’d look really good standing beside it..
I’ve got some beautiful new red shoes
and they look so fine
I’ve got a hundred and five fever and it’s high tide…”

~Laurie Anderson, “Beautiful Red Dress”

Today is my birthday, and I greeted with great happiness the news of Laurie Anderson’s new album, Homeland, coming out. As some of you know, I have the above quote from Laurie Anderson in my SL profile (a quote I have carried with me since that song came out in the early 90s). I greatly admire her work and the being she projects, one who is full of life and passion and generosity with smiles and dimples and a short woman’s quiet strength.

Beautiful Red Dress

Of course, it would make utter sense that I would wear a beautiful red dress on my birthday. (And you’d look really good standing beside it.) Today I wear a stunner from Nicky Ree, a long elegant dress that says all of what I hope Harper is: elegant, sexy, sophisticated.

Beautiful Red Dress

I have red hair, this time a sleek bob from boo Nakamura. Red hair is how I started my life in SL (after I eliminated the brown system hair I had made). Harper, regardless of all the different iterations I put myself through, is a redhead, and an unnaturally red redhead (as opposed to a carrot top).

I wear a skin from Tuli Asturias with red lips and the sort of sophisticated face shape I like seeing. The eyebrows are impeccable, the lips, full and beautiful, and the eye shadows are shimmering and arresting.

Finally I wear jewelry that was given to me by Random Calliope on my RL birthday two years ago before he released it for sale. It was the most thoughtful gift I received that year in SL or RL.

Ruby Red

Sometimes it really is only about the dress.

Ruby Red

The Crazy Arse Hair Hunt took me to Ivey Deschanel’s store, and of course, something caught my eye (as it always does when I walk in there—you’d think I would learn). This pretty party dress, available in a package with a black and purple version for a mere 250L really got my imagination going. I put it on and suddenly I was climbing in taxis and running from one cocktail party to another in my lovely sculpted frock. Ivey’s store would make you believe she is all dark and tough but really, she is a girl like any of us—one who likes pretty dresses and the delightful horizon of an evening on the town laid out before us.

Ruby Red

I paired it up with this pretty skin from Amesha Jewell with it’s deep eyes and pretty lips. I mentioned in a previous blog that a skin she had offered had a seam. She quickly fixed the skin, made a public notice that she would replace the skin to anyone who wanted such a replacement, and kindly replaced mine. I can’t say enough about service and integrity like that. She really is stellar.

Hair is from BlueStarRUI Villota. (You can kind of tell I had a little shopping spree at Love Soul recently because you are seeing a lot from her here. It was a great splurge!)

Written while listening to “Flamenco Sketches” by Miles Davis.

I have received several notices today from flopsie McArdle concerning her desire to sell the Iron Fist sim. I don’t think I have gushed enough about how wonderful I think her work is, how amazing the Iron Fist sim is, how much her creativity has brought much joy to my SL and probably many others’. That being said, I don’t think this is about drama–flopsie is simply being proactive and selling a grandfathered full sim when she can still get a good price for it. It’s wise business. I would encourage all of my dear readers to go to Iron Fist one more time before it disappears from the grid. Enjoy flopsie’s tremendous creativity and wonderful sense of humor and abundant love for this medium. (And if you’re so moved, make her an offer….)  Iron Fist is one place in SL where art lives.

Spring Stripes

One of the most wonderful fashion fantasies in SL is to have a great big hat. Not just any old hat but one that you could wear to the Kentucky Derby or to some equally fabulous spring fete. While the Derby won’t be held until April, it pays to prepare.

Spring Stripes

Sascha Frangilli will fulfill your fantasy with her beautiful new hats, offered as a match to her beautiful sleek new gown. Varying from her customary textured full gowns, Sascha shows this lean gown with white highlights and an asymmetrical neckline punctuated by a flower with abstract feathers. It’s elegant and minimal.

Spring Stripes

But the stunner of the outfit is really the hat with its fluted wide brim and translucent striped texture. Tilted at an angle, it frames this beautiful face (courtesy of Tricky Boucher) and keeps the sunlight out of a lady’s eyes as she watches the racetrack. I chose a feminine but sleek hair from Rachel Boram and earrings from Random Calliope. With a sleek minimal simplicity to most of the look, the busyness of the flower and the boldness of the hat stand out and seem in proportion.
