From “Quotes overheard at Coachella”: “No, I brought the Chanels,” – A festivalgoer slumming it by bringing her “crappy” sunglasses

Coachella

A dear friend just moved to another area in California and discovered she was living very close to Coachella, which is a huge music festival held in the spring. It runs two weekends with a ton of alternative music performers. I love music, and I would love to go but I don’t think I am up to the dress code.

Coachella is not like other music festivals where you show up and drink and listen to music and have fun (like Summerfest). And it’s not like Burning Man, where you dress for the desert. Since it’s in Indio, California, it’s a veritable fashion show of very defined and careful choices. You want to look beautiful and natural, but in a manner that is finely orchestrated so you don’t end up with sunburn on your nose and blisters on your nicely (and expensively) pedicured feet. Therefore, your hair is tousled by a stylist, not the wind, and your purse looks bohemian though it’s made by the best artisans Prada can muster. Now I have set the mood, check out the little ensemble I put together for Coachella.

Everything starts with the passes, blue and green, that you wear around your wrist. Every single photo of every attendee, from Vanessa Hudgins to Lindsey Lohan (who had her rehab intake postponed so she would not miss Coachella), includes these. These were made by Emma Gilmour a couple years ago and I haul them out for any music event. Then there is the sunscreen, slathered from top to bottom, the cut-offs—these from OneBadPixel and appropriately bootilicious, the boots from GutterBlood Spoonhammer to protect the pedicure and look tough, the insouciant belt from Fallingwater Cellardoor (yes, vintage SL), and the heaps of jewelry from Maxi Gossamer. Notice I even have a carefully done manicure from Tya Fallingbridge. There is no room for dirty feet or broken nails at Coachella. The pressure for just-right boho is intense.

Your makeup needs to be glowing, natural, and Instagram gorgeous. That’s why I chose this new skin from Sachi Vixen. With her usual artistry, Sachi makes a lovely girl with a well-toned and defined body and seductively made-up face. Long locks from rika Oyen, who has been quietly releasing mesh hair, make my finely tousled ‘do, colored the day before at my favorite colorist. My great hat from Johnfrancis Laville is actually stolen from a boyfriend, designed to keep the sun off my nose and my hair.

While Coachella takes place on polo grounds, I chose to take photos in my own backyard with Barnesworth Anubis’ new hollyhocks and wood gate, part of a fence set he is selling at The Garden.
