A Butterfly’s Life

A Butterfly's Life

“I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days – three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.” ~ John Keats, Bright Star: Love Letters and Poems of John Keats to Fanny Brawne

A Butterfly's Life

The grid is being inundated with events at the beginning of the month again. Not only do you have the opening of the Arcade, but also the Summer Fashion Festival and several other things going on. The number of complaints of people who can’t seem to figure out why they can’t get into the Arcade goes up exponentially during those first few days. (I am guessing it’s because you and 2000 other people are trying to get in at the same time maybe…?) Despite Umberto’s best efforts, you simply can not jam 200 avatars on a sim, all complaining in chat about lag, sorting through their inventory, trying on demos, and pumping linden into one vendor, trying to get the one piggy that they must have out of 50 choices and occupying the sim for hours at a time while they go afk to do laundry or call their mom. Life is too short to keep trying the first day and frustrate yourself, even second life. Really.

Flit off instead to the Summer Fashion Festival. I went last year and discovered a number of new designers, including Ariadna Garrigus, the organizer of the event, whose work I had not seen before. Each vendor is obliged to offer an exclusive item AND a gift, and there are plenty of lovely things to choose from. Take this dress from Moreno Forwzy (how do you pronounce that?) who is offering this lovely butterfly dress with butterfly sleeves and a ruffle near the bottom. I have not seen this silhouette before so I am guessing it’s an original mesh (though I could be wrong). If so, it’s well done with a darling texture. Ariadne is offering the shoes as a gift with blossoms on the strap and a simple skin matching HUD. And my background screen, from Hanstrid Inshan, is another gift you can get your hands on.

A Butterfly's Life

My necklace fortuitously landed on in my hands carried by a rabble of butterflies and their wings. AvaGardner Kungler has always been inspired by nature, and she brings it to us with this lovely set that comes in three metals and three colors.

I am not telling you to forgo the Arcade–it goes on all month. Wait until the diehards clear the sim and you can enjoy your shopping or wait for the numerous yard sales for trading that pop up to find the less rare pieces you really want. Tricky Boucher is offering a gorgeous set of skins this month, and you really can’t go wrong with anyone you get. The one I show is not a rare but has the rare beauty Tricky always offers.

Mina Nakamura is offering this lovely mesh ‘do at the Numberology event, which also opens tomorrow. That is another alternative for shopping this weekend. I saw a number of great designers would be there.

Day Off

This weekend I took a day off and created a whole new home….

Day Off

A quick trip to the Home and Garden Expo, supporting the Relay for Life in SL, should satisfy anyone’s nesting needs. Start with this revised home from Cain Maven. With partial mesh, improved scipting and textures, this spacious two bedroom home offers a waterfall over the stairway, hot tub, built in security and tinted windows, a kitchen with full complement of appliances and seating and two fireplaces—inside and out. A fantasy home indeed.

Day Off

This is going to be a blow by blow of all the great furnishings I have recently gotten my hands on, most—but not all—from the Home and Garden Expo. First, Solange Cerveau is moving into mesh and she has started with this great gazebo with color change drape shown above that includes the vase of hydrangeas. This is not available at the Expo, however the great Adirondack chairs and tables from Cherelle Capra I put near the fireplace outside in back are available at the Expo.

Day Off

Kaerri Rae is also donating content at the Home and Garden Expo. She has made two very different sets: the Kauri and Paris collections. Above I show living room sets from both. The Kauri is a more masculine set with neutrals punctuated by blues in a very 70s style. The Paris collection is an eclectic combination of curves and color with turquoise and yellow pillows and artwork combined with more baroque lines in the furniture.

Day Off

Kaerri is offering a dining room set with sideboard, place settings, an assortment of vases and a shelving unit to hold those vases you don’t see in the photo. She also includes a floor vase. The starburst piece is from Apple Fall’s newest collection, which he is showing at the Grove (slurl below). Cherelle Capra is also offering the lovely shelving unit shown with pillows for reading or relaxing shown with a print of the magnificent Chicago skyline from Apple Fall.

Day Off

Kaerri has two bedroom sets at the Home and Garden Expo as well. The Kauri again has a masculine contemporary feel with a bed, artwork, and accessories plus the long low dresser that echoes the lines of the sideboard in the dining room set. The Paris bedroom collection also shows the eclectic nature of the living room collection and includes all pieces shown above plus a darling vanity with stool.

Day Off

A casual look is in order, and I pull it off with the new skinny jeans from Paul Lapointe who has the best butt in SL. These mesh skinnies are the best thing going on the grid right now and Paul made them in a variety of sizes and shapes for all you girls who like a little more booty or need more hips. My casual shoes and tank both come from Pixieplumb Flanagan’s latest collection.

Tiffy Vella’s newest sun hat has color change pieces all over so you can customize to your heart’s content. I changed the hat color to white, the flowers to pink with gold centers and the tiny flowers to purple with a hat band that is pink. Wear it around the house, for gardening, or to your favorite tea party.

Aida Ewing just came out with a new skin collection that is, as always, absolutely gorgeous. With neutral lip and eye, this look is ideal for a day off.

Harper Answers Your Mail—Exhibitor Questions

Still blogging for SL10B. People are building like mad! Can’t wait to see what we end up with!

SL10B

After the last blog entry I, Harper Beresford, resident fashionista and special guest star, received a slew of letters with questions from exhibitors. Let’s dive in.

Dear Harper,

Help! I am an exhibitor at the SL10B Birthday Celebration but I can’t do it all alone! I had registered 20 of my closest friends/alts to help me. How do I sneak them in?

Very Social in SL

Dear Social,

Wow! 20 friends! Longer than my friends’ list! We allow 4 additional friends/alts as building assistants. Once you have registered and put down your prim, you can go into SLB Exhibitor chat and ask for them to be added. Ask nicely and wait until an EA acknowledges you. Example:

  • “I am an exhibitor. Can you add my friends as building assistants?”

An EA will contact you. Give them the correct spellings of your friends names and tell your friends to accept group!

So You’re an Exhibitor! Congratulations!

I was asked to help out with SL10B. The SL10B Community Celebration is Second Life’s 10th anniversary resident-run gala celebration, and it happens from June 16 to June 29. Being a fashionista, what could I possibly know about building or sim management or handling massive data or.. well any of that? All I know how to do is match my shoes to my purse. This blog reminds exhibitors about the rules of building.

SL10B

So you have been accepted to the SL10B as an Exhibit Builder! It’s a great honor and a lot of fun. The organizers asked me, Harper Beresford, resident fashionista and special guest star, to explain to you how to get started and some of the rules for building.

First, you got accepted. Congratulations. First hurdle is done! But how do you get in?

Exhibitor Assistants (heretofore known as “EA”s) are waiting breathlessly for your call. Join the SLB Community first.

Once you have joined, click the “Chat” button for the group.

Type right in that group (yes, you are allowed to talk), “Hi! I am an exhibitor! Can I  please have an EA to invite me to the group?”Wait a little bit. (You may or may not hear musak—we have no control over that.) It may take a while because it can get really busy and what they…

Overjoyed

Overjoyed

And though you don’t believe that they do
They do come true
For did my dreams
Come true when I looked at you

~ “Overjoyed” by Stevie Wonder but performed by Esperanza Spalding

Overjoyed

When I put on this dress, all I could think of was the song, “Overjoyed,” so I sought my favorite version, played by Esperanza Spalding at the White House (and yes, Stevie Wonder was there) and remembered how it feels to be filled with joy. Joy arrived when LeeZu Baxter released this dress—a combination of mesh and flexi, with gorgeous textures—brocades, satin, even an embellished ribbon across the bodice. She includes optional handless gloves (arm warmers?) with the dress. Once again, LeeZu shows us her design brilliance.

Overjoyed

I am also overjoyed because Tricky Boucher will be releasing a set of gorgeous skins for his gacha at The Arcade, when it opens June 1. I am fortunate to be able to show you Skin 1, a “rare” skin that will be absolutely worth jamming the machine with linden for. With a generous sprinkling of freckles and his characteristic gorgeous nose and brows, the eyes pop on this skin with a deep liner. This is a skin I would use again and again.

My hair is one of Truth Hawks’ newest with windblown locks to match the movement of the flexi in my dress. I love what he has done with this one, employing mesh to show movement regardless of mesh’s static tendencies. My earrings are lovely pieces that I downsized (modifiable, thank you) from Amberly Boccaccio, available at this month’s Collabor88.

In the top shot, I show Siddean Munro’s hands, this time using the Belleza skin appliers (I think I used the pale Mya setting for these) and nails from Nicole Twigvald. Check out her store because she has tons of nails for these hands—perfect for girls like me who have a nail polish problem in SL and RL. (Just know when I go for a manicure in RL, I lovingly adore the huge wall of polishes.)

Overjoyed

And maybe too, if you would believe
You too might be
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

Put a Bird On It

Put a Bird On It

“In Portland, you can put a bird on something and just call it art.” ~ Portlandia

Put a Bird On It

One of my favorite skits from “Portlandia” was “Put a bird on it!” Bryce Shivers and Lisa Everman go into a gift shop in Portlandia and liven everything up by putting birds on them—from tote bags to toast. It’s a trend that deserves a little laughter. When I received this dress from ValentinaEvangelista, I couldn’t help myself. With a darling shape—perfect for wearing around this summer—the dress is made even better with this retro bird print. Suddenly I couldn’t help but put a bird on everything, including my necklace from Caroline Apollo and a cute little ring from Ayumi Cassini. Cory Edo’s infamous birds are hanging above me, creating that lovely shadow.

Put a Bird On It

Tricky Boucher has generously given a skin for the celebration of Cynful’s business and sim. This beautiful skin (in one tone only but well worth grabbing) is available for a limited time, only at Cynful. My hair is Marisa Karu’s latest work for Collabor88. With removable hair pins that can also be colored, this updo shows off Marisa’s best work with wispy strands framing the face and an easy style.

Dancing with Change

Dance the Change

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. ~ Alan Watts

Dance the Change

Flickr recently changed their format, allowing users to have 1 terabyte of storage space free for their media. A lot of people flipped out. Some had the hubris to make a critical analyses. I went, “Yay!” One terabyte is a lot of pixels, and I didn’t have to sell my soul for storage. I changed my personal account from Pro to free and got a prorated refund in less than 24 hours. Yahoo has to make money. Better off advertisers than me.

Change happens. It’s part of living. Either I can spend my energy squawking about it or I can dance along. I choose to dance. Today I am dancing in this great set of silks from Solange Cerveau. With her characteristic intricate textures and perfect system pieces and absolute sex appeal, the silks give me the look of a gorgeous dancer. (Because if I am going to dance, I am going to do it looking good!) How does Solange manage to pack so much into such a small set of pixels?

Dance the Change

With the advent of mesh in SL (another change some people have problems with), we are seeing hybrid avatars, made of the system avatar and mesh enhancements. Heads, boobs, even butts have come out. And of course, we have hands and feet. The queen of this is, of course, Siddean Munro, who recently adopted the clever open-source texturing used on mesh boobs by allowing creators to develop “appliers” for her hands and feet for both skin and nails. I used a set of her “Elegant” hands to hold zills for dancing, just to make the dancing more rhythmic and musical.

Sachi Vixen, who has survived just about every change the grid has tried to throw at her has created a set of appliers for Slink’s hands and feet like other creators as well as gloves and now the lovely foot jewels you see on my opening photo. Made of mesh, they come with a color changing HUD that allows you to choose from six different metal colors. I looked on MP and found these terrific french nail colors in an applier from Nicole Twigvald and click, click and my manicure and pedicure were complete.

Dance the Change

Sachi’s appliers would not work right if I weren’t wearing her skin as well. The transition from hands and feet to the rest of the body is truly seamless. I had to make no adjustments once I had put the appliers on. And this skin is gorgeous. With well-developed features from top to bottom (not just the pretty face we see on some skins), Sachi’s latest skins have been a gorgeous addition to the grid and perfect for wearing with revealing silks.

Truth Hawks is another creator on the grid who has rolled with the punches. When mesh came out, he converted his hair factories from sculpty to mesh. His latest mesh work is gorgeous—he gets better every day. Recently he chose to redo his color selections and in so doing, forgo the metaphorical names for simple colors and numbers. Most of us embraced the change. Change happens. Dance along.

Life is like dancing. If we have a big floor, many people will dance. Some will get angry when the rhythm changes. But life is changing all the time. ~ Miguel Angel Ruiz

Delight

Delight

She was a Phantom of delight
When first she gleamed upon my sight;
A lovely Apparition, sent
To be a moment’s ornament;
Her eyes as stars of Twilight fair;
Like Twilight’s, too, her dusky hair;
But all things else about her drawn
From May-time and the cheerful Dawn;
A dancing Shape, an Image gay,
To haunt, to startle, and way-lay.

~ William Wordsworth

Delight

When I saw this gown from Ariadna Garrigus, I knew I wanted to show a contemporary look with a classical poem. This gorgeous sequined dress from Ariadna is a delight with a beautiful mesh shape and a sexy glittering texture. Check out the sexy criss-cross back, which will make you look great coming and going. Adorned with deco jewelry from Maxi Gossamer and new shoes from Babette Ultsch, this look is almost perfect.

Delight

Circe Ishtari creates the beautiful that is skin deep. This is her latest skin which is not made up and is a perfect base skin for eyeliner from Tricky Boucher and lipstick from Mocksoup Graves. I love being able to combine makeups like I can in RL, dipping into my cosmetic bag for just the right berry for a pretty pucker. Kavar Cleanslate has come out with a few new hairs, including this gorgeous side-swept style, dusky and elegant for a twilight look.

And yet a Spirit still, and bright
With something of angelic light.

Narcissus

by Tutsy Navarathna

“Narcissus so himself himself forsook,
And died to kiss his shadow in the brook.” ~ William Shakespeare

Narcissus

The story of Narcissus from Greek mythology is the core word of the illness of narcissism, one where a person can only think of themselves and regard themselves as perfect. In the Ovid’s version of the story, Narcissus rejects the love of the mountain nymph, Echo, and Nemesis, the goddess of revenge decides to punish him. So she lures him to a pool where he saw his own reflection. He falls in love with the one he sees, not realizing at first it is himself.

Tutsy Navarathna took a clever turn with this tale for his latest machinima. An entry in the latest University of Western Australia Machinima Challenge, his film addresses the theme of “Reflections.” Tutsy literally brought a reflection to bear in this film.

I loved the machinima, especially the one that was narrated in French by Tutsy himself and has English subtitles. (See above.) Tutsy Navarathna hails from Paris but currently makes his home in India. Some of his voiceovers come from friends in India. He also involved many friends in the production of the film, including Iono Allen and Alpha Auer. That is what makes this machinima and the competition itself so exciting—the collaboration of artists from all over the planet.

Narcissus

In watching the film, I thought about our own gaze at our avatar, the pride and “love” we have for this figure we have made. How many of us cling to our “selves,” carefully adorning it, protecting our “image” and self. It’s a film that echoes with many layers as we watch, being more than just a literal “reflection” but also a reflection on our selves.

Narcissus

Being the person who does a fashion blog, I asked Tutsy about the fashions he used to make Narcissus, of course. And Tutsy agreed to be the model for this blog. So you get the machinima AND a backstage look at the star.

Tutsy made his own shape and on this long lean shape he piled layers and layers of tattoos and piercings to make his Narcissus contemporary and attractive. In the machinima, his Narcissus is brooding and solitary and almost singularly beautiful. And narcissistic.

You can read more about the competition and the latest entries at the UWA in SL blog here and see more of Tutsy’s work here, including his last three winning entries for their competitions.

Narcissus

“Narcissus does not fall in love with his reflection because it is beautiful, but because it is his. If it were his beauty that enthralled him, he would be set free in a few years by its fading.” ~ W.H. Auden

I Love the Way You Move

I Like the Way You Move

I like the waaaay you move
I like the waaaay you move (Whoo-o-o!)
I love the waaaay you move
I love the way, I love the way.

~ “I Like the Way You Move” by Outkast

I Like the Way You Move

This sexy song with punctuations of brass is a perfect piece for this outfit. Start with the sexy mesh shoes from Babette Ultsch. The pack comes with eight color choices, chosen via hud and a standard skin selector with a variety of nails. This is what I like about Babette’s work: she does sexy well. The shoes have a funky curvy platform and great shape and they seduce as most of her work does.

I Like the Way You Move

Then I have this sexy wrap dress from Poulet Koenkamp. This IS a template dress—I have seen it and shown it in various different ways—however Poulet makes it her own with her spectacular textures and HUD, allowing you to switch between them. I chose the warm reds and oranges of the button on the top row, third from the left. No one does textures like Poulet.

I Like the Way You Move

My skin is one of the great ones Aida Ewing is offering at Collabor88. I realized I had blogged this very skin before but with a red brow and in blonde, with Ikon Innovia’s hazel eyes, it looks completely different. My hair is one of Truth’s new ‘dos, blonde with waves and curls. I like how the curls vary as they would in real life and love the bangs.

I Like the Way You Move

I love the way, I love the way.
