Rosanne Rosanna Bandana

Rosanne Rosanna Bandana

If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Rosanne Rosanna Bandana

The following is a very culturally specific reference to a TV character on Saturday Night Life. An example can be seen here.

A Mr. Roger Feder from Fr. Lee, New Jersey, writes in and says, “Dear Rosanne Rosanna Bandana, I heard there is something called a Hair Fair going on. Don’t they have enough with craft fairs and art fairs, car fares and state fairs, book fairs and college fairs, renaissance fairs and train fares, the fairest of the fair and the vanity fair? I know of air fares but what is this hair fair?”

“Well don’t you ask a lot of questions for a guy from New Jersey. Don’t they have fairs where you are? I guess nothing ever happens in New Jersey.”

“It’s very simple. Hair Fair is a yearly fair in SL where hair creators sell brand new hair with a percentage going to Wigs for Kids. Wigs for Kids makes hair pieces for kids who have lost their hair due to illness.”

“Once I, Rosanna Rosanna Bandana, lost my hair in a freak SL accident. I wore a wine glass and my hair came flying off. I can tell you, it’s not a nice thing. On some people, the system head is lumpy and smells funny. And you know, if you look close, some people have those lines in their skin where the face matches up to the head and it looks like someone sewed on their face badly or maybe used tape and you don’t know where they’ve been. Or their hair falls off and suddenly all you notice is that they have these squinty tiny eyes and a frown on their face like they forgot to wipe?”

Rosanne Rosanna Bandana

[At this point Sasy Scarborough interrupts. “What does Hair Fair have to do with that?”]

“Well you know, as they say, ‘If it’s not one thing, it’s another.’ If it’s not Hair Fair, it’s squinty-eyed frowners who forgot to wipe.”

Rosanne Rosanna Bandana

I went through this whole parody for Hair Fair. This year again I made a bandana for Hair Fair, with all proceeds going to Wigs for Kids. I named the bandana for the pun, of course, but also for the actress who played her. Below is my explanation:

“Thanks for purchasing this Rosanne Rosanna Bandana, named in homage to Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer after a courageous battle with the illness. While she was not a child herself, she played childlike characters on Saturday Night Live in the US during the 70s, including Judy Miller, a little girl who pretends to put on a talk show in her bedroom (http://www.hulu.com/watch/3518), Lisa Lubner, a nerdy girl who is in love with a boy named Todd (http://www.hulu.com/watch/4142), and my favorite, Rosanne Rosannadanna, a New Yorker with an opinion about many things with the philosophy, “It’s always something…” (http://www.hulu.com/watch/4147).”

Rosanne Rosanna Bandana

I hope you purchase one. I kind of made the texture from scratch (though I used brushes from Falln Stock). Thank you to Vaalith Jinn for explaining how to preview the texture on the hat (nope, didn’t use a temporary texture).

Please buy one. I worked hard on this and this blog entry. I am certainly no artist but I did my best so some little kid who is sick doesn’t have to worry about people seeing her bald head.

Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Nicky Ree has *always* been a supporter of Relay for Life. Every year she applies her talents to specially made exclusive dresses sold for Relay for Life with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. In the past and this year as well, she has also backed that up with a personal donation as a sim sponsor.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Nicky chose to color her RFL donations purple or pink, and we are honored to have her beautiful content grace the Ansel Adams sim. Take the Tanya Gown with its rich deep sheen, tweedy print, and gem-like colors. With its sexy plunging neckline and sophisticated silhouette, it’s a beautiful gown for a red carpet.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Nicky was clearly influenced by Frederick Lancaster’s art deco build for her sim when she did this exquisite texture on her Mara dress. Nicky has donated the Mara dress in various iterations over the years, each one more stunning than the next.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

Her regular black and white version of this dress is stunning and both Mara dresses come with a long ballroom skirt and a shorter sophisticated skirt.

Designing Nicky Ree at Fashion for Life

For women who like a softer look, Nicky offers pink and fuchsia versions of her Lana Satin and Lace and Tricia Lace gowns. With their sophisticated drama, these gowns highlight Nicky’s amazing talent and background in formal evening wear (her mother owned a custom boutique in RL). Nicky has perfected the lushness of fabrics that would be used in formal gowns, highlighting a woman’s best features and making her feel incredibly pampered and beautiful.

Being an “Icon”

I had the distinct pleasure of being featured in an article in Avenue Magazine as a “Fashion Icon.” I was lucky enough to meet  Rusch and Jesika, the owners of the magazine, face-to-face when I attended the SLCC both years. They are an amazing couple—warm, kind and whip-smart. I was flattered they thought enough that they had me do an interview for their publication. Then I got to meet the amazing Annough Lykin, who did photographs of me. See her great blog here.

Being an "Icon"

So it got me thinking about what I need to do sometimes to push myself a little harder. I have been taking on shadows and working around the hassles of that, and I share some images I did with you. I am not sure I will do this frequently; my blog isn’t really about my pretty photos—it’s about the beautiful fashions in SL and sharing them with my readers. But let me indulge my vanity today.

Being an "Icon"

Of course, wearing a dress from Nicky Ree always makes me feel beautiful. I was discussing Nicky’s considerable talent with another designer the other night and we both agreed Nicky simply has some of the most beautiful texture work on the grid. We also agreed she pushes the ingenuity with prims in SL. She works within the restrictions of SL and blooms.

Being an "Icon"

I adorn this look with earrings from Squinternet Larnia, of whom I don’t say a lot enough. I visited her store tonight and I was absolutely blown away by the quantity and quality of her content. (Yes, I know I need to blog more of her work.) Her jewelry is exquisite and quite different from lots that is available on the grid—much more “costume” and designer and dramatic than a lot, which I appreciate.

The Golden Hour

You must have been warned against letting the golden hours slip by; but some of them are golden only because we let them slip by.  ~James Matthew Barrie

The Golden Hour

One of the best parts of SL is that we can dress to the nines in the most elaborate gowns, embroidered with the most opulent materials and sewn by the most skilled couturiers and dance til dawn (especially if we mess with the Environment Settings). Nicky Ree is one of the designers in SL who make this dream more real with her beautiful gowns. I am wearing her newest, which includes exquisite textures with a decidedly Asian influence. As always, we see Nicky’s inventive and beautiful prim work and close attention to the smallest details.

The Golden Hour

My skin is a beautiful African-American skin from Azlyn Vaher. She has a number of skins for alternative looks, including one that is a very muscular woman (presumably for her clientele, which is mostly Gorean, including Panther). Nevertheless these skins are a great alternative for those looking for a darker tone. I especially like the freckles, which some African-American women do have.

My hair is boy hair, and that’s quite all right. Chiaki Xue makes hair that boys can wear but girls will love too, and I loved making a sort of Halle Berry look for my avatar. My delicate earrings are from the incredibly patient jewelry-maker yoona Mayo.

Red Hot

Remember those little red candies, Red Hots? They were so spicy, so sweet and so pleasurably painful. One off a Christmas cookie or a handful in your mouth, you would breathe in their sweet memory lingering in your mouth even after the candy was gone, tickling your tongue, sparking a little heat.

Red Hot

Nicky Ree has recently made a dress with great lingerie underneath for the red hot woman in your life. With a dramatic skirt made in three parts (two prim sets to attach), this gown will take you from the dance floor to the bedroom in two simple clicks.

Red Hot

Once again we see Nicky’s beautiful texture work, her great prim building and her rich colors carried through this set. Add to that the versatility that Nicky always provides with her outfits (opaque and translucent system pieces included) and her exacting quality, and this ensemble is a great value.

Red Hot

To suit an outfit this hot, I needed to wear Queue Marlowe’s new susanna hair, long thick silky locks that curl behind the shoulders and fall down the back in luxurious waves. Queue has made a long hair style with face-framing bangs that works well in poses (I had almost no cutting into my body—it fell gracefully in almost every pose).

Nena Janus’ beautiful skin makes my red hot look complete with its gorgeously highlighted curves and sensuous makeup.

Memories in a Box

“I imagined a small lacquered box inlaid with silver and gold in a pattern of curling waves, inset with silver cranes. Into this imaginary box I placed all my memories… and secretly tucked it away in my heart.”
~ from The Tale of Murasaki by Liza Dalby

Memories in a Box

As the year closes, I will tuck into my box a few wonderful memories—the thank you from Marianne McCann at SL7B, the last views of my beautiful villa on Avant Garde before I took it down, the way RFyre looked when we first remodeled it, the day I got a proposal from Callie saying, “C’mon, you know what you to” in my email, how fun it was modeling for SC Tracy and then meeting him and Raven and Nevar and Amethyst and Cashel in Florida.

The beautiful fictional Murasaki reminded me of this with her words. Therefore I choose to show a dress as elegant and regal as Murasaki, made by Nicky Ree. Leave it to Nicky to still be able to come up with a dress that makes this jaded old fashionista still gasp with wonder. The textures are absolutely exquisite and the prim building is, as always with Nicky’s work, rock solid. Nicky’s translucent textures make the most of alpha clash, allowing the beautiful flowered train under the sheer overcoat to shimmer through when the flexis move. The front skirt includes the magnificent vision of a phoenix embroided on these royal robes. If this is a peek of what Nicky will be doing in the coming year, 2011 will be a great year!

Memories in a Box

I have donned one of  Hart Larsson’s newer skins, which he has fashioned with an eyeshadow layer as the makeup for the skin rather than a different lip color. I wonder which is more successful on the grid—optional lipstick or optional eyeshadows. I wear a retired hair from Elikapeka Tiramisu, who has blessedly come back to make more such beautiful pieces.

Lovely Day

When the day that lies ahead of me seems impossible to face
And someone else instead of me always seems to know the way
Then I look at you and the world’s alright with me
Just one look at you and I know it’s gonna be –
A lovely day – lovely day

Lovely Day

I have several friends I speak to every day. They remind me that no woman is an island by bringing fun, sage advice, adventure, and love to me. In the past few days a friend has messaged me from the airport on her way to New Orleans, reminding me she loves me as she boarded the plane. Another friend has laughed about my “Cussmas Cookies” (the ones I made, cussing the whole time). Two have told me about important job interviews and their impressions of them (with another going to one this morning—good luck, sweetie!). One messages me from the airport, from in front of the TV, during meetings, etc. Just to snark and share and giggle. (And I was just called a “crankpot” by this friend. Hmpf!) A few have told me seeing my avatar show up in world gives them a physical feeling—a jolt, a warmth, a tingle. And they give me a “lovely day.”

So I have dressed appropriately cheerful but dark all at once in this ensemble. My top, from the amazing LeeZu Baxter, is an older one but still stands the test of time with its wonderfully done translucent layers and ruffled shoulders. My skirt and tights are part of a set by Sen Pinazzo. I love the translucency of the skirt as well and the great tights made to go with it. She includes in the set two other skirts—one with straighter, flatter flexi prims and one with a sculpty skirt with pockets. I love this set. These skirts will get a lot of play from me.

Lovely Day

I wore it with a glowing happy skin from Mallory Cowen. Nothing like making a lovely day lovely than wearing Mallory’s creations. My hair is a new ponytail updo thingy from Truth Hawks, reminiscent of days when I was an adolescent and trying stuff out. Somehow this looks way better than anything I came up with. Finally, a set of pretty bracelets from Kotori Skytower.

Power Point

Shenlei Winkler of the Fashion Research Institute has asked me to speak for a series they are doing in SL. I will be presenting at 3 pm slt today at their location to speak about “’Fashion’ Marketing in Virtual Worlds.” It’s nothing earth shattering but you are welcome to come see my pedestrian slides and hear my dulcet tones.

Power Point

That being said, the obvious question will be what will I wear?! If I were smart, I would keep you in suspense, but I am even smarter because I need to show an outfit in today’s blog, and I struck upon the perfect one. This suit and skirt set is a new offering from Nicky Ree and done up in her typical cosmopolitan and elegant style. As usual, Nicky combines the skillful use of prims with great textures. Classy pumps from Tya Fallingbridge (with black accents) complete the ensemble.

Power Point

I wear a dark red lipstick over my skin from Minnu Palen. This set was the first I found that offered the lipsticks on the tattoo layer. Now many skin makers are offering such an option, and it’s a welcome. My one twist from conventional is Truth Hawks’ hair with a streak, further echoing the black and red color theme.

Red Letter Day

When I am gone, I hope it is said, “Her clothes were scarlet, and her blog was read!” (Adapted from a quote by Hilaire Belloc)

Scarlet

Red is one of my favorite colors to wear. It looks good on Harper and on her driver in RL. It connotes intensity, vibrancy, happiness (in the East), power and action. Nicky Ree’s newest dress, based on a design by Yves Saint Laurent (and quite beautifully inspired), is a deep gorgeous red that suits me perfectly.

Nicky has really pushed herself with this design and shows her ingenuity and skill throughout. First she starts with a sheer blouse topped by a jacket and enhanced with a sheen in the texture that lends the material richness. She takes that sheerness another whole level with her sheer sleeves, which are a brilliant touch. Her slit skirt, with the slit system skirt and slit system pants make the slit skirt perfect—she does everything right through all the layers.

Scarlet

My skin is from Aida Ewing, who has recently come out with this line of skins. Aida’s work is developing a sophistication that is going to put her in the A-list of skin makers very soon. Her make-ups are daring but pretty. She is balancing the eye make-up with the lips now and her eyebrows are lovely. I look forward to seeing what Aida makes in the future.

Scarlet

My very hot shoes are new from Kuranosuke Kamachi. With the combo ribbons AND the leather strap, they come off very “real” and fashionable. The shoes come with a hud for color changing and changeable toe nails plus toe rings. The best detail on the shoes is the platform and the leather straps in my opinion. They make the shoe fantastic.

Silver Lining

“Too many people miss the silver lining because they’re expecting gold.” ~ Maurice Setter

Silver Lining

It bears repeating that SL definitely has its problems, but there are many wonderful things about it. I would say now my biggest gripe about it is everyone else griping. I am tired of the complaints. Considering how the larger world is having problems, the death of Avatars United or a few crashes seems really not a big deal. For example, I log into SL and see this beautiful dress from Nicky Ree and the day is made more lovely all of a sudden.

Nicky exercises all her best skills with this dress. For example, she makes a gorgeous, translucent system piece on top with a lovely flower motif to cover the critical parts. She echoes those flowers in the system skirt (showing also her skill in lining up two pieces like this—no small task). The system pieces, incidentally, have razor sharp edges—no ghosting, no pixelation. Then she paints it with a glistening silver texture, translucent and shimmering all at once. And the dress has her characteristic silhouette—sleek and elegant.

Silver Lining

My hair is up in a pretty hairstyle from Britnee Hadlee, who has been on the grid for quite a while, making gorgeous hairstyles of all kinds for ladies. Skin is Tuli Asterias’ newest offering for The Dressing Room. Once again Tuli gives us a pink eyeshadow, this time echoed in glossy pink lips. And instead of prim lashes, I opted for monica Outlander’s tattoo layer lashes. Finally, a pretty necklace from Hibiscus Flossberg from her new gacha machine. Go pump some lindens in—some pretty things to be gotten.
